“You want to join them?” Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted the first official trailer for an indie musical titled Saturday Church, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. The film is being described as Moonlight meets La La Land (of course these two films are named), but set in New York City. The story follows a 14-year-old boy named Ulysses, struggling with gender identity and religion, who begins to use fantasy to escape his life in the inner city and find his passion in the process. Broadway up-and-comer Luka Kain stars as vibrant youngster Ulysses, with a cast including Margot Bingham, Regina Taylor, Mj Rodriguez, Marquis Rodriguez, and Indya Moore. Saturday Church also features songs and music composed and co-written by musician-turned-film composer Nathan Larson. This looks like a triumphant, uplifting, inspiring film from NYC. And this reminds me of the excellent documentary Kiki. Worth a watch. ›››

“We’re vigilantes – it’s our moral obligation.” The Orchard has debuted the first red band teaser trailer for an teen-angst dramedy titled Flower, from director Max Winkler (of the film Ceremony). You wouldn’t expect a young adult comedy to need a red band trailer, but this gets wicked fast. It’s only red bad for the language, nothing else, so don’t expect too much with this teaser. Flower stars the awesome Zoey Deutch as a young rebellious teen who decides to act out and band with her two friends to expose the kinky secrets of sexy high-school teacher Will, played by Adam Scott. Things get wacky and weird. The full cast includes Kathryn Hahn, Joey Morgan, Tim Heidecker, Dylan Gelula, Maya Eshet, plus Eric Edelstein. This looks very funky and very angsty, which seems like it may be fun sometimes, but annoying other times. ›››

And there’s a debating raging about whether this is a feature film or a documentary or a series, or what exactly. Officially, Wormwood is a part-documentary, part-scripted series telling the “untold true story of the CIA, LSD experiments, mind control, and the death of a family man.” Starring Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Blake Nelson, Molly Parker, Jack O’Connell, and others. “You have no idea what’s coming…” Now that we’re into the final month of 2017, it’s time to start looking back at the year in movies. The next year end recap movie trailer mashup has debuted – this one made by Clark Zhu. It’s titled “Moving Pictures 2017” and includes clips from over 230 movies that were released in 2017. Since he packs in so many into this recap, the video runs a full eight minutes but covers a number of different themes – from comedy to suspense to action to horror to love. “Captain: there is only one logical direction in which to go – forward.” Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled Please Stand By, from director Ben Lewin, who last directed the acclaimed film The Sessions. Please Stand By is a story of a young autistic woman who runs away from her caregiver and heads off to Hollywood. She is on the run because she wants to hand-deliver a 500-page Star Trek script to a writing competition in Hollywood. Dakota Fanning stars in this, with a full cast including Toni Collette, Alice Eve, River Alexander, Marla Gibbs, Jessica Rothe, Michael Stahl-David, and Patton Oswalt. This is one of those surprise didn’t-know-this-existed films, but I’m very curious to see it, just sounds like something fun. Plus I love the quotes about light and the unknown, good stuff. “I’ve been waiting for you, Master Bruce.” OMG this looks awesome!!! An official trailer has arrived online for a Japanese anime version of Batman, set during the Sengoku era, re-imagining Batman as the “Batman Ninja”. And oh yes, it’s as badass as it sounds, if not even better. Batman Ninja is directed by filmmaker Junpei Mizusaki, and is about Batman defending a town in feudal Japan. This is officially licensed by DC (hence the Warner Bros logo) and is actually the real Batman, not some imitation version to skirt around licensing. There’s even a feudal Japan villain who is basically The Joker. Holy crap this looks so so so cool, everything about it, I can’t wait to see this. I’d even pay good money to see this on a big screen, instead of just on my TV. In addition to the trailer below, there’s also a video from New York Comic-Con, which is a slightly extended version of the same trailer. Stop what you’re doing and watch this now, you won’t regret it. ›››

It’s here! Time to start figuring out which films are the best of the year, so get watching. One of the annual must-see best of the year lists is actually a video countdown made by my colleague David Ehrlich (follow him @davidehrlich). He counts down his 25 best films of the year in a video edited together with footage and music from each of the films. This is such an entertaining way to count down the best cinema of 2017, and it always makes me want to watch each one of these (even the ones I’ve seen already). “I want to help you, but I don’t know how.” GKids has released a brand new US trailer for the animated film Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, which is finally arriving in limited US theaters this December. This first premiered back in 2015 and played at festivals throughout 2016, but hasn’t ever been available in the US until now. Based on a graphic novel and short film by co-directors Pedro Rivero and Alberto Vázquez, Birdboy: The Forgotten Children is a darkly comic, beautiful and haunting tale of coming of age in a world gone to ruin. Featuring the voices of Félix Arcarazo, Andrea Alzuri, Eva Ojanguren, Josu Cubero, Jorge Carrero, and Nuria Marín. Even though this is arriving a few years late, it looks like an intriguing post-apocalyptic animated feature that’s a bit different than what we normally see. Might be worth a watch. ›››

“It’s about the truth.” “Which truth?” Cohen Media Group has released the official US trailer for a Lebanese film titled The Insult, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this fall. This film is a radical, dramatic profile of the division and tensions in Lebanon, specifically between the two prominent religious groups – Christians and Muslims. Set in Beirut, the story begins when a local man insults a construction worker, and then their tiny verbal spat blows completely out of proportion, almost causing a war in the entire country. From the director of The Attack, The Insult stars Adel Karam, Kamel El Basha, Camille Salameh, Rita Hayek, Christine Choueiri, Diamand Bou Abboud, and Georges Daou. I caught this in Venice and it’s a thrilling, intense film, but also very loud and flashy at times, with some weird twists in the second half (it turns into a court room legal battle). Still an important film from Lebanon that is worth seeking out. ›››

“Aren’t you curious? You must be…” Good Deed Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for the indie romantic drama Permission, from director Brian Crano. The film stars Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens as a couple on the brink of getting engaged. But just before this happens, they both realize they should sleep with other people before, and attempt to get the permission necessary to do this. Obviously this is a movie for adults, and a perfectly quirky Valentine’s Day movie, if that’s your thing. Also starring Gina Gershon, Francois Arnaud, David Joseph Craig, Morgan Spector, and Jason Sudeikis. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, but hasn’t had much buzz since then.
