This isn’t a new concept, but this is the film that is going to change everything. Search is a new film playing at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival that’s told entirely through/with computer screens. Directed by Aneesh Chaganty, who also worked at the Google Creative Lab before making this film, sets a new precedent with Search and has made a groundbreaking, thrilling, incredible feature that will hopefully appeal to audiences of all kinds (not just computer geeks or horror fans or curious cinephiles). I know I can say for sure that I loved this film, everything about it impressed me, and it got to me emotionally as well. It’s a reinvention of modern filmmaking and storytelling by using technology accurately and showing us just how much of our lives are on computers (and how some of our lives are still not digital, which makes for an intriguing twist). ›››

“Forget about school, it’s time to party.” An official trailer has debuted online for an Canadian indie comedy film titled Adventures in Public School, formerly known as Public Schooled when it premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. The film is about a socially awkward home-schooled kid named Liam who forces his way into attending public school against his “suffocating but loving” mother’s wishes. The talented Judy Greer stars as the mother, and the kid is played by Daniel Doheny. The cast also includes Siobhan Williams, Russell Peters, Grace Park, Andrew McNee, Alex Barima, Andrew Herr, and Eva Day. I don’t recall hearing much about this from TIFF last year, but it seems like it might be a fun coming-of-age comedy about parenting and school life. I like that Greer seems to be having as much crazy fun as her son is. ›››

“They have to do everything correctly 100% of the time.” Aw, puppies!! An official trailer has debuted for a film titled Pick of the Litter, a documentary about puppies. No, really. The film is actually about the process of choosing the right dog to be trained as a Guide Dog for the blind. I feel like there have been films made about this before (a few from Japan perhaps) but why not another one? Everyone loves dogs! At least I do. The documentary, from filmmakers Don Hardy Jr. & Dana Nachman, follows dogs as they are trained for two years. It also spends time with the Guide Dog community and introduces us to some of the people who end up getting these dogs as their companion and best friend. This actually looks adorable, of course, and I’m curious to see it. This is premiering at the Slamdance Film Festival this month, surprisingly enough. ›››

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees this morning via live broadcast. They’ve nominated many of the best films, and lots of terrific performances from 2017, though there are always more that deserve recognition. This. Film. Rules. Every so often, Sundance will be lucky enough to premiere a film in the Midnight category that instantly cements itself as a guaranteed hit and genre-busting work of cinematic art. Assassination Nation is one of the best Sundance Midnight films I have ever seen here, hands down. It’s a loud, energetic, socially-conscious, refreshing, awesomely entertaining, totally wild & crazy, seriously impressive, original creation from the mind of filmmaker Sam Levinson. It’s amazing. I loved every second of it. The midnight crowd at the Sundance world premiere ate it up, and I am glad I was there to experience this moment. This film is a smashing massive success, and it’s going to blow everyone away once it hits theaters everywhere. ›››

We’re full swing into the awards season, with the big ones being handed out before the Academy Awards countdown. The 24th annual SAG Awards honor the greatest performances from 2017, as chosen by other actors which means this is one of the most definitive lists of the best on-screen performances. Actors know their profession better than anyone and are very particular about good performances. This year, Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri swept the entire awards, picking up four big wins in total – including the Best Ensemble. This is an impressive feat, but also a bit depressing, because I feel the awards should’ve been spread out a bit more to all of the other great films from 2017. Full list below. ›››

“If you don’t pay, you stay here.” Dogwoof has debuted the full UK trailer for an exceptional documentary titled Makala, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and also played at the Toronto & London Film Festivals. I saw this in London and loved it, writing a rave review, hoping that I could convince a few people to check it out. Made by French filmmaker Emmanuel Gras, Makala follows one man from Congo (aka Democratic Republic of the Congo) who makes charcoal on his own then carries it on a bike to a nearby city to sell. As I said in my review: “it is one of the most engaging looks at humanity you can find on screen all year.” It’s a visceral, eye-opening experience following one man, that’s the power of great cinema. ›››

The sci-fi fantasy follows three people – Meg, her brother, and her friend – who are sent into space by three beings in hopes of finding her missing scientist father. “It’s a good time to escape.” With the big football game this weekend, Warner Bros has debuted a new TV spot for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Don’t forget this movie is due out in theaters in just a few months, so there’s not much of a wait now. The new preview also includes a hidden secret QR code which links to a hidden video that is narrated by Spielberg and author Ernest Cline, with some unseen footage. The more we see from this, the more excited I get. Young actor Tye Sheridan stars as Wade Watts, known in the Oasis gaming world as “Parzival”. I don’t know about everyone else, but I come to Sundance to discover films that we’ve never seen before – crazy original, fresh, never-before-seen concepts that make my jaw drop. Sorry to Bother You is one of Sundance 2018’s most original, most WTF, most entertaining discoveries yet. Made by talented musician-turned-filmmaker Boots Riley, this anti-capitalist social commentary comedy film has creative oozing out of every orifice. It’s balls-to-the-walls nuts, in a good way. And despite being a bit sloppy with some weird filmmaking choices, I still love it and don’t mind how sloppy it might be at times, because it is so totally bat-shit insane and original and enjoyable and brutally accurate about how terrible our society has become with corporate jobs. It’s the epitome of a “one-of-a-kind film” and everyone needs to try a slice of this craziness. ›››
