Epic Games Founder Donates $15 Million for Wildlife Conservation Effort

Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney has donated $15 million to permanently protect a 7,000-acre forest in the developer’s home state of North Carolina. Specifically, the money provides for an easement that protects the Box Creek Wilderness, which is in western North Carolina, near the Blue Ridge Mountains.

As Gamasutra explains, a “conservation easement” like the one Sweeney paid for mandates that landowners cannot develop, subdivide, or interfere with the tract of land in question.

    No Caption Provided

“It’s still in private ownership but the easement ensures it can never be developed,” Sweeney told the Citizen-Times. “It’s not open to anyone in the public at any time, but people can email and get a permission card and go and enjoy it.”

“I’m grateful for the efforts of Senator Burr to help protect Box Creek Wilderness,” Sweeney added in a statement. “And I’m grateful for the whole Fish and Wildlife Service team’s tireless efforts to preserve vital North Carolina natural areas in partnership with conservation-minded landowners like me.”

The $15 million donation is thought to be one of the largest conservation easements by an individual in the history of North Carolina. The easement is being donated to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Jeff Fisher, the CEO of the land management firm that organized the deal, said the Box Creek Wilderness has “such rare plant and wildlife species.” A wildlife biologist cited in the story said ecologists found more than 130 rare and “watch-list” plants and wildlife species there.

This isn’t Sweeney’s first time buying land in North Carolina for conservation. He’s been doing so since 2008 and now has collected 40,000 acres of land across the state, some of which has been donated for conversation efforts.

Epic Games’ other founder, Mark Rein, is a part-owner of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. In 2012, Chinese internet company Tencent paid $330 million for a stake in Epic Games.

    All the EA/Origin Access Games

Electronic Arts’ Xbox One subscription service, EA Access, launched in August 2014 with four free games, including FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4. Since then, EA has added over 30 more and launched a version of the service on PC called Origin Access.

We’ve now rounded up all the freebies into lists, which you can see below. We will update this post in the days, weeks, and years ahead when more games are added. EA has vowed never to remove any games from the “Vault” of freebies. “I think one of the key things is that once a game goes into the Vault it stays there, it’s not going to be taken out, that’s a commitment we’ve made,” Peter Moore said.

    No Caption Provided

No version of EA Access is available on PlayStation 4. According to Sony, the service does not offer the kind of value PlayStation fans have come to expect. That being said, Sony maintains that it is open to having a dialogue with EA about how it might be able to bring EA Access to PS4 someday.

In addition to free games, EA/Origin Access members can play some games (but not all) ahead of launch; most of the time, subscribers get a five-day headstart. Another benefit is that subscribers save 10 percent on all EA digital content, which knocks down the price of a $60 game to $54.

The service costs $5/month or $30/year.

  • Mirror's Edge and Its Sequel Are Now Free on Xbox One With EA Access

Mirror's Edge and Its Sequel Are Now Free on Xbox One With EA Access

The EA Access free game library on Xbox One expands today, November 9, with the addition of Mirror’s Edge and its sequel, Catalyst. As with all other Vault games, they are playable in their entirety for as long as you remain a subscriber.

EA Access costs $5 per month or $30 per year and offers discounts and early access in addition to its library of free Vault games. There’s no word on if the PC‘s equivalent service, Origin Access, will also add the games. A PlayStation 4 version of EA Access does not exist.

    No Caption Provided

Catalyst’s addition is noteworthy because it was released in June, meaning it was only on sale for five months before going free to EA Access members. That’s among the shorter gaps we’ve seen so far, though other recent additions like Unravel and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 were also fairly quick turnarounds.

Looking ahead, EA will add EA Sports UFC 2 to the EA Access Vault tomorrow, November 10. Additionally, Star Wars Battlefront, which was released in November 2015, is coming to the Vault before the end of 2016.

There are already more than 30 games in the EA Access free game vault, all of which are listed below. Newly added and upcoming games are bolded.

  • Need For Speed Arena Trademarked by EA

Need for Speed publisher EA has filed a new trademark in the EU for what looks to be a new title in the racing series: Need for Speed Arena.

The publisher applied for the trademark on November 7 to the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

Need for Speed’s developer, Ghost Games, already revealed we’re due another entry into the long-running racing franchise. In a May 2016 blog post, the company said, “Since we released Need for Speed last November, we’ve been humbled by the support from our players and the ongoing collaboration with you. We are now building upon the foundations that have been laid with Need for Speed and delivering our next game in 2017.”

Not all trademarks turn into final products, but if Need for Speed Arena does eventually make it to store shelves, it would be the first in the series since 2015’s reboot. In our review, we said Need for Speed is, “at times, truly exceptional,” scoring it an 8. You can read our full Need for Speed review here.

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda Director Teases More Games in the Series

Mass Effect: Andromeda Director Teases More Games in the Series

Mass Effect: Andromeda is not the start of a new trilogy, creative director Mac Walters confirmed earlier this week. Some might have taken that comment to suggest that Andromeda would be the last game in the series–but it sounds like that won’t be the case.

Walters said on Twitter, “To be clear: Just because Andromeda isn’t start of a trilogy, doesn’t mean we haven’t been planning for future adventures. Just not 3 acts.” In another tweet, Walters was more forthcoming about plans for an Andromeda follow-up. In response to a suggestion that Andromeda would be the last Mass Effect game, Walters said, “Not by a long shot. There are so many stories left to tell…”

Andromeda’s main character, Ryder, begins the game as an untested solider, with the story playing out like the traditional hero’s journey. In the first Mass Effect, Shepard was already a known quantity in the game’s universe. For Andromeda, the hope is that it will tell a contained story, Walters said.

That being said, he explained that BioWare could make more Mass Effect games in the Andromeda galaxy.

“At the end of this, we want it to feel like a story has completed,” Walters said about Andromeda’s story. “Yes, for the universe, there’s much more you could explore, and we want to tease that, but it feels like its own story. It’s like, ‘Great. I had my Ryder sibling becoming-a-hero story. What’s next? Is it going to be Ryder? Is it going to be something else? Who knows?’”

    No Caption Provided

Producer Michael Gamble said Andromeda will tell a “different type of story” than what fans of the series are used to. “We want to leave the ending, and what we’re doing with it, as a surprise,” he said when asked if there would be multiple endings. “This is a different type of story, so it will be something different than the trilogy. We can’t wait to hear what fans think.”

Walters also teased on Twitter that BioWare will reveal the voice actors for Andromeda’s villain and other characters “soon enough.”

One actor already confirmed for Andromeda is Clancy Brown, who plays Ryder’s father, Alec Ryder. Brown voices Mr. Krabs on Spongebob and also appeared in movies like The Shawshank Redemption and Warcraft.

In other Andromeda news, BioWare has discussed the game’s romance options, how it balances its shooter and RPG elements, potential DLC, and more. Additionally, BioWare has explained how Andromeda avoids dealing with Mass Effect 3’s ending and revealed it will have a crafting system and an updated New Game+ mode.

In addition to a new trailer and a separate video that revealed some key story details, we’ve also learned about Andromeda’s deluxe edition and the fact that loyalty missions are coming back. BioWare has also confirmed that a multiplayer beta will be held before launch.

Andromeda is scheduled to launch this spring for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While not confirmed, multiple retail listings have suggested a March 21 release date.

More Andromeda gameplay footage will be shown during The Game Awards in early December.

  • Johnny Depp's Role in Fantastic Beasts 2 Confirmed by Director

Johnny Depp's Role in Fantastic Beasts 2 Confirmed by Director

Last week it was reported that Johnny Depp will play the lead role in the sequel to upcoming Harry Potter spinoff prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. His role has now been confirmed by the film’s director.

    No Caption Provided

Speaking to Potter site The Leaky Cauldron, David Yates revealed that Depp will play Gellert Grindelwald, former friend to Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore.

The director went on to explain the reasons that Depp had been cast. “The whole principal of casting the movie was go with the best actor,” he said. “Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘Who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’”

“Johnny Depp is a real artist,” Yates continued. “He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious. We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We don’t care if he’s famous or not famous. We just know he’s interesting.”

Grindelwald appeared briefly in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, played by Jamie Campbell Bower in a flashback. Ironically, Bower’s first film role was in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, where he starred alongside Depp.

Earlier this week, Yates also confirmed that the young Dumbledore would feature in the film. “In the second movie Dumbledore comes back,” he said, via Screenrant. “He’s got a couple of good scenes with [lead character] Newt. We’re discussing who would play Dumbledore. Any suggestions would be good.”

Last month, Rowling confirmed that there would be no fewer than five movies in the fantastic Beasts series. It was recently reported that the second film will be set in Paris.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on November 18 and stars Eddie Redmayne, in addition to Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs), Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), and Ezra Miller (Justice League). While it is set to make a lot at the box office in its debut weekend, it will still make less than any Harry Potter movie, according to projections.

  • Dishonored 2 Has 9 GB Day One Patch on PS4 and Xbox One

Dishonored 2 requires a 9 GB day one patch on PlayStation 4.

The file size was first reported by Reddit user LegalTRR, but GameSpot has independently confirmed that the PS4 version automatically triggers a 9.1 GB patch.

GameSpot can confirm the Xbox One version also prompts a 9.0 GB patch download.

While it is possible to play the game without installing the patch, doing so will sign you out from PSN or Xbox Live. Dishonored 2’s publisher Bethesda recommends you do install the update.

The benefits for updating, as listed by LegalTRR, include improved loading times, texture streaming, audio mixing, frame rate, and shadow quality, as well as numerous bug fixes.

Dishonored 2 releases November 11 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Bethesda recently revealed the minimum settings you’ll need to run Dishonored 2 on PC–they seem fairly reasonable, though recommended settings are a little more demanding.

Looking for new content in Mafia III? You’re in luck, as the crime game’s “Judge, Jury, and Executioner” weapons pack is out now for everyone–and it’s free.

As announced previously, this comes with three weapons, including a .30 caliber rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol. As you can see in the image below, all three–The Praecisione, the Exterminatore, and the Silentum–have a golden tint.

These weapons were available at launch for people who preordered Mafia III, according to DualShockers.

Mafia III’s other free DLC on the way includes more vehicle customization options like new wheels, personalized license plates, and paint jobs. There will be performance-boosters, too.

Developer Hangar 13 is also supporting Mafia III with three paid expansions that will “reveal more about Lincoln Clay’s time in New Bordeaux.” 2K teased, “As these stories will reveal, the Italian Mafia isn’t the only threat Lincoln faces…” The stories for these focus on the Vietnam war, ritualistic killings, and stunt driving.

Read GameSpot’s previous coverage to learn more. Release dates for Mafia III’s story add-ons have not yet been announced.

2K’s parent company, Take-Two, announced last week that Mafia III shipped 4.5 million copies in its first week, setting a new launch record for 2K. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also responded to Mafia III’s reviews, which were lower than what the company had hoped for.

How's Square Enix Doing? Here Are the Key Takeaways From Earnings Repot

Japanese video game giant Square Enix today reported earnings for the six-month period ended September 30, providing a new look into how the company is doing from a business perspective.

Total revenue was ¥106 billion, up 23 percent from the same period last year, when Square Enix pulled in ¥86.36 billion. Net income was ¥5.5 billion, a decrease from the ¥7.3 billion in income that Square Enix recorded during the same six-month period last year.

    No Caption Provided

Console games that benefited Square Enix’s bottom line during the quarter included Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and the PlayStation 4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Square Enix didn’t say how well the games sold. The company also said it had “strong download sales” of catalog titles, but didn’t name any titles outright.

Some of Square Enix’s smartphone and PC games, including Mobius Final Fantasy, Hoshi No Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy Brave Excius, and Grimms Notes were also called out as revenue-drivers.

Square Enix’s video game division, called Digital Entertainment, recorded revenue of ¥78.31 billion, up 30.1 percent from the same period last year. Operating income, however, dropped 6.1 percent to ¥12.13 billion.

Looking ahead, one of Square Enix’s biggest upcoming games is Final Fantasy XV, which finally comes out on November 29 for PS4 and Xbox One. Director Hajime Tabata has said he hopes the game will sell 10 million copies, though that is not necessarily how many copies its needs to sell to turn a profit.

  • The Big Bang Theory is Getting a Prequel Spinoff

The Big Bang Theory is Getting a Prequel Spinoff

It’s the most popular series on TV, and the producers of The Big Bang Theory are now looking to expand it to a spinoff show, which is reportedly already in production.

    No Caption Provided

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff will focus on the earlier life of Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory, and is being developed by co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. THR’s sources describe the project as “Malcolm in the Middle but with a young and potentially teenage version of Sheldon.” Like The Big Bang Theory, the series will be produced by Warner TV and broadcast on CBS, although neither company has commented on the project to date.

The Big Bang Theory is currently on its tenth season, and although season 11 is expected, it is yet to be commissioned. THR reports that the main cast members, including Parsons, Johnny Galeck, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik, and Melissa Rauch, are all currently negotiating new deals with Warner for season 11 and beyond.

In 2014, Parsons, Galecki, and Cuoco signed deals that were reported to be around $1 million per episode, as well as signing bonuses, production deals, and advances. The show regularly attracts over 20 million viewers a week, more than double to what it achieved during its first season.

Disclosure: CBS is GameSpot’s parent company.
