  • Zelda: Wind Waker 2 Was Cancelled By Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was originally meant to get a sequel, but Nintendo cancelled it in favour of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

That’s according to an interview with artist Satoru Takizawa (translated by Nintendo Everything), who says, “we had begun the initial steps towards creating Wind Waker 2 … However, demand for a more Ocarina-like game was growing by the day.”

The reason for the cancellation of Wind Waker 2 and subsequent development of Twilight Princess instead is an odd one: horses.

“Wind Waker 2 would have taken place in a more land-based setting, rather than on the sea, so that we could have Link gallop across the land on a horse,” says Takizawa. “But Link’s proportions in Wind Waker weren’t very well suited for riding on horseback; he was too short, and an adult version of Toon Link did not seem appropriate either.

“High-budget live-action fantasy movies were also huge at the time, so with all things considered, we decided to have at it [and switch to Twilight Princess].”

The interview comes from the new Zelda: Art & Artifacts book, which is released in the UK and US in February but is already available in Japan.

Wind Waker never got a sequel, though it did get an HD re-release in 2013 on Wii U. You can read our The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD review here. Twilight Princess also got an HD Wii U version, in 2016–read our review of that here.

A more cartoonish Link, similar to the one seen in Wind Waker, returns–on horseback–in the newest Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Would you have enjoyed a Wind Waker sequel? Or are you glad we got the more ‘realistic’-looking Twilight Princess? Let us know in the comments.

  • Resident Evil 7 Demo Coming to Xbox One and PC Soon

A new update for Resident Evil 7‘s “Beginning Hour” demo, called “Midnight,” launched over the weekend on PlayStation 4. It’s coming to Xbox One and PC later this month, Capcom has confirmed.

It’ll launch on Xbox one on December 9, while PC players can try it out beginning on December 19, Capcom announced on its blog. There will be a “multitude of PC-specific settings and graphics options” on PC, though these were not detailed today.

The Midnight update for the Resident Evil 7 is just the latest tweak for the Beginning Hour demo, as Capcom released a “Twilight” update for it earlier this year. The Midnight update goes even further, allowing players to “explore what lies beyond the mold-covered door, where terrifying growling noises emanate from….”

The PS4 version of the demo includes an optional PlayStation VR mode, while people with a PS4 Pro and a supported TV can experience it in 4K.

Resident Evil 7 launches on January 24, 2017 for all platforms. That’s just a few days before the new movie, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, comes out in theaters on January 27. Check out the newest trailer for Resident Evil 7 above, while the latest Final Chapter trailer can be seen here.

  • Napoleon Dynamite and Pedro Reunited in New Burger King Ad for Tater Tots of Course

Here’s something pretty cool. In a bid to promote its new Cheesy Tots, fast food giant Burger King has released a new advertisement starring the characters Napoleon Dynamite (John Heder) and Pedro (Efren Ramirez) from the 2004 comedy Napoleon Dynamite.

“The comeback of the decade is here,” Burger King wrote in the video’s description, which applies to both Napoleon Dynamite and the new tots. The food item, which features a crispy outside and a mixture of potatoes and cheese on the inside, was discontinued in 2009, according to Business Insider, before being recently revived for a new limited-time promotion. Here’s the video:

This is obviously a nod to the character Napoleon Dynamite’s love for tater tots–he loves them so much he stuffs them into his pocket and eats them during class.

  • Ben Affleck's Batman Movie Might Arrive in 2018–Report

Ben Affleck's Batman Movie Might Arrive in 2018–Report

We all know that a Ben Affleck-directed Batman movie is on the way, but it remains unknown when we will see it. However, the recent confirmation that DC’s Aquaman will arrive in October 2018 suggests that Affleck’s Batman could be released in the summer of that year.

    No Caption Provided

As Den of Geek reports, Warner currently has two 2018 release dates set for DC movies–July 27 and October 5. With Aquaman taking the latter and The Flash potentially delayed following the loss of a second director, it is increasingly possible that the Affleck film might hit in July.

In September, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes stated that the Batman film was “a year and a half out.” The following month, Jeremy Irons, who plays Alfred in DC’s movies, told Variety that “Ben’s going to make a Batman film next summer,” which again points towards a 2018 release.

In August, Affleck released some early test footage of Deathstroke, who is confirmed as the villain in the movie. A week later, it was confirmed that Joe Manganiello had been cast in the role.

In an interview last month, Manganiello hinted at what we can expect from the film. “His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised,” he said, via Comicbookmovie. “It’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to who Batman is. And I think it’s gonna be refreshing but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think a lot of people are going to be really happy about.

“It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman.”

  • The Walking Dead Hits Almost 4-Year Ratings Low

The Walking Dead Hits Almost 4-Year Ratings Low

After a strong opening for its Season 7 premiere, viewership for AMC’s hit zombie show The Walking Dead continues to decline. Episode 6, which aired on November 27, reached 14.3 million total viewers, according to The Wrap. Of the total, 8.9 million viewers came from the important 18-49 demographic. These numbers include figures for November 27 and three days after, to factor in DVR and such.

    No Caption Provided

As The Wrap notes, 14.3 million viewers is absolutely massive for a cable TV show. However, it’s a dropoff from what the AMC show had been netting for viewers in the past. According to the site, it’s almost a four-year low, falling back to where figures were for the second half of Season 3 in 2013.

The Walking Dead‘s Season 1 premiere drew more than 17 million viewers, which was close to a record for the show. A strong start was expected, as the fist episode finally answered the Season 6 finale cliffhanger question of which character the evil Negan would murder with his barbed-wire baseball bat, Lucille.

Episode 7 premiered on December 4, though viewership figures for the show have not been released yet.

An eighth season of The Walking Dead is on the way, scheduled to start in late 2017 with the show’s 100th episode. Showrunner Scott Gimple is coming back for the new season.

The next Walking Dead game, Telltale’s The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, debuts on December 20 with a two-part premiere.

  • Westworld Season 2 Is All About "Chaos," Will Dive Into Dr. Ford's Masterplan [SPOILERS]

    This post contains Westworld spoilers.

The first season of HBO’s acclaimed sci-fi/western Westworld wrapped up last night with a thrilling finale that answered some of our biggest questions. Now, creator Jonathan Nolan and other members of the creative team have revealed, at a high level, what fans can expect from the upcoming Season 2.

“If the first season was defined by control, the second season is defined by chaos,” Nolan said during the episode’s “Big Moment” segment that followed, according to IGN. “That’s part of what we come to understand Ford has been planning all along.”

Season 1 wrapped up with some monumental teases for what’s to come–so “chaos” being a theme for the next season is no big surprise.

Nolan went on to say that Dr. Ford’s motivations will be a major area of focus for Season 2.

“Ford has set in motion what he thinks is a plan. The nature of that plan is something we explore in the second season,” he said. “What his intentions are: are they to let Dolores or the other Hosts escape? Are they simply to teach the human guests a lesson?”

Dr. Ford, who is played by Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, apparently died in the Season 1 finale, “The Bicameral Mind,” having been shot in the back of the head by Dolores.

Also during the segment, producer JJ Abrams said about Season 2, “What happens at the dawn of consciousness? What happens when you begin to actually wake up?” At the end of Season 1, Dolores and other hosts gain consciousness–and we don’t know how it’s all going to play out.

Lisa Joy, Westworld‘s other creator and showrunner, added that “consciousness” might not be the right word. “Is it consciousness? Is it programming? Is it awareness?” she said.

Dolores actress Evan Rachel Wood teased that her character has reached a tipping point.

“If Dolores is the oldest, this girl has seen three lifetimes of pain and trauma,” she said. “I would think there would be only so much one can take, whether you’re human or not.”

Before this, Nolan talked about how Season 2 will also showcase how the hosts are powered and whether or not they need oxygen to survive.

Westworld Season 2 was confirmed earlier this year, at which time HBO said the show’s ratings were beating Game of Thrones by some measurements. Season 2 will premiere in late 2017 or 2018.

  • Dead Rising 4 Review Roundup

As Dead Rising 4‘s December 6 launch nears, reviews have started to appear online. It seems the Xbox One timed exclusive has attempted to take the best elements from previous games in the series, minus the co-op campaign fans have come to expect. But is that enough to elevate it above its predecessors?

Take a look at GameSpot’s Dead Rising 4 review here, or our review roundup below to find out what other critics think. Or, For a wider view on Dead Rising 4’s critical reception, check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

    • Game: Dead Rising 4
    • Developer: Capcom Vancouver
    • Platform: Xbox One, PC
    • Release: December 6
    • Price: $60

    GameSpot — 7/10

“Dead Rising’s zombie-slaughtering formula has started to wear a bit thin after all these years, especially since its combat remains largely routine. The surprisingly well-crafted story, wild new combo weapons, and expansive open world elements, however, turn Dead Rising 4 into an over-the-top piece of popcorn entertainment that captures the series’ best elements.” — Scott Butterworth [Full review]

    IGN — 8.1/10

Dead Rising 4 has the best core gameplay the series has ever seen. Its inventive and humorous ways to put down the dead are something I still haven’t tired of, and its surprisingly interesting plot is more than just a zombie-killing delivery system. Despite the technical blemishes that come with the series, its lack of co-op story mode play, and the fun-yet-unreliable multiplayer, Frank West’s return brings the series some fresh ideas, a ton of bloody mayhem, and a whole lot of cracking wise. Here’s hoping he sticks around for a while. — Brandin Tyrrrel [Full review]

    GamesRadar — 4/5

“It feels like for every upside Dead Rising 4 has going for it, there’s a bit of a downer. The story is much tighter and more focused, at the expense of the colorful psychopaths of previous games. The timer has been removed, making exploration more enjoyable, but that kills any sense of tension. Frank is back, but he feels a bit more focus-tested and generic. However, Dead Rising 4 succeeds more than it fails–and when it succeeds, it does so in ways that feel significant.” — Sam Prell [Full review]

    Game Informer — 8.75/10

“Dead Rising has straddled the line between horror and humor since its inception, and that hasn’t changed with the fourth entry–but it’s not shambling in the footsteps of what’s come before. Even though we’re back in Willamette with Frank West, Capcom Vancouver has infused the series with fresh ideas and some of the best action that it’s had in a decade.” — Jeff Cork [Full review]

  • The Mummy Director Talks Monster Movie Universe, Teases Later Films

The Mummy Director Talks Monster Movie Universe, Teases Later Films

Universal’s classic monster movie universe kicks off next summer with The Mummy, and the first trailer is now online. The film’s director Alex Kurtzman has now spoken about what audiences can expect from the future films in the series.

    No Caption Provided

In an interview with Collider, Kurtzman explained that although the movies will overlap–for example, Russell Crowe’s Dr Jeykll features in The Mummy–it was important for the films to work in the their own right. “I can’t tell you how much I believe that in order for you to enjoy The Mummy, you have to have a satisfying mummy experience,” he said. “If we are then in that context able to set up a larger world? Great! But the setup of that larger world and whatever characters Tom may meet over the course of the mummy movie have to be part of the mummy movie. It cannot take you out of that.”

Although there have been numerous rumours about potential future movies in this universe, so far The Mummy is the only one with a confirmed release date. However, Kurtzman confirmed that The Creature from the Black Lagoon was one under serious consideration.

“I want that to be in the jungle,” he revealed. “Okay, we’re in the Amazon. Where do you want to shoot that, on the backlot or in the Amazon? No, we have to actually go there. Now you’re talking about a big movie.

“I think if you look at something like Creature, the story starts to tell you what it wants to be and how big it wants to be. The beauty of monster movies is that because they’re psychologically complicated, there are certain monsters that are better served by being really intimate and really small.”

We know that a Van Helsing movie is in development, and Crowe is expected to return for a standalone Jekyll and Hyde film. It has also been reported that Johnny Depp could star in The Invisible Man. Other names that are reportedly in consideration for roles in the series are Dwayne Johnson and Javier Bardem, to play the Wolfman and Doctor Frankenstein respectively. Universal has scheduled further films for April 2018 and February 2019.

The Mummy hits theaters on June 9, 2017.

  • First Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite Gameplay Trailer Shows Power of Infinity Stones

Capcom has released the first gameplay trailer for Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, showing Ryu and Mega Man X taking on Iron Man and Captain Marvel in what looks to be an Asgardian arena.

As previously announced, Infinite is a 2v2 fighting game, instead of the traditional 3v3 the series is known for. In this respect, Infinite’s gameplay looks more like Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, a fighting game Capcom released for the Wii.

Another small change shown in the video is that characters can chain combos together by calling in their teammate to pickup where they left off. In previous titles, the second character would enter the battle with an attack. However the new system looks closer to that of Street Fighter X Tekken, where the second character runs in and the player must time an in coming attack precisely to link the two chains together.

The series’ over the top launches, which send characters skyrocketing into the air, don’t seem to be present. Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite seems to be more grounded game. However, wall bounces are still present, so there will be some opportunity to get fancy with combos.

Assist attacks, another classic Marvel Vs. Capcom gameplay pillar, also aren’t seen in the video. In previous games teammates could be summoned to jump in and do an attack and then leave. These were often used to control territory or limit the opponent’s movements. Assist attacks are one of the more complicated elements of the MvC series and Capcom has said it wants people to “engage in accessible” gameplay, which could be why they aren’t present. Of course, it’s also possible they may show up in future videos.

Another aspect of the gameplay we’re given a look at is the Infinity Stones. During the fight Ryu activates the Power Stone and unleashes a barrage of attacks. Although the lifebar isn’t shown, presumably all of these are doing more damage than usual.

Captain Marvel responds by utilizing the Time Stone, which gives her a speed boost. She’s shown teleporting through Ryu to the other side and opening him up with a flanking barrage. Check out all the action for yourself in the video above.

Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite was officially announced during Sony’s PlayStation Experience press conference. It will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017. It was also confirmed that Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is now available to download and play on PS4. Xbox One and PC re-releases will arrive in March 2017.

  • The Last of Us: Part 2 Director Addresses Sequel Worries, Says "Trust Us"

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann has asked fans to put their faith in the studio as it returns to the story of Joel and Ellie for The Last of Us: Part 2.

Speaking during a panel held at PlayStation Experience, Druckmann started by confirming that the sequel takes place a few years after the events of the first game, when Ellie is aged 19. He went on to acknowledge worries among fans that creating a sequel diminishes the poignancy of the first game’s ending and the journey its main characters went through.

“So much thought went into this and I know there’s a lot of people that feel this trepidation about coming back to these characters and revisiting what that ending means and worrying whether that’s going to spoil the first game,” he said.

“You have to understand we feel all those things as well. No one loves these characters more than we do and we would not do this if we didn’t feel like we had the right idea. The ‘Part II’ is really doubling down on that to say we believe in this so much. We’re not trying to avoid it.”

According to Druckmann, Naughty Dog is treading the two games as companions that, together, depict an overarching narrative.

“I played with so many ideas that had different characters and it never felt right,” he explained. “The Last of Us is about these two characters specifically. So yes, the Part II is saying this is a complementary story to the first game, but the two together are going to tell this larger tale.

“All I ask is that fans of the first one put faith in us and trust us. We’re going to do right by you.”

Earlier in the panel, Druckmann also revealed that players will primarily control Ellie in The Last of Us: Part 2. In the first game Joel was the main playable character, and this reversal extends into the underpinning theme of hate, as Ellie can be seen in the debut trailer threatening to kill a group of as of yet unknown characters.
