Sony Exec Says Amazing" Games Coming in 2017, Bloodborne Dev Teases "Ambitious Projects"

A major area of focus for PlayStation this year has been in the area of hardware. Sony launched the PlayStation 4 Slim, the PlayStation 4 Pro, and PlayStation VR.

According to PlayStation Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, fans can expect “amazing software” to be released in 2017 to take advantage of the hardware.

This came up in a 4Gamer interview, which was translated by DualShockers.

A number of developers were quoted in 4Gamer’s year-end interview feature. In addition to Yoshida, Bloodborne producer Teruyuki Toriyama mentioned that his team is working on “ambitious titles” and ideas for new games simultaneously. No suggestion was made that any of these are Bloodborne 2.

There are a number of exciting and intriguing PS4 games in development right now, including a new God of War, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Persona 5, just to name a few. Not all of these are confirmed for 2017, however.

  • New Image From Stephen King's "It" Movie Is Incredibly Creepy

A new image from the upcoming film version of Stephen King’s horror novel It has come online–and it’s scary. We see Pennywise the clown emerging from a sewer pipe, lurking like the terror he is.

See Pennywise in his unnatural habitat in a new #ITMovie photo: https://t.co/NAvt9tX4Sn

    — Entertainment Weekly (@EW) December 26, 2016

Hemlock Grove‘s Bill Skarsgard plays the murderous clown in It. It is an adaptation of the 1986 King novel of the same name. There was a previous TV adaptation which featured Tim Curry as the diabolical clown Pennywise. Skarsgard told Entertainment Weekly that he’s going to take a different route with the character.

“Tim Curry’s performance was truly great, but it’s important for me to do something different because of that,” he said. “I’ll never be able to make a Tim Curry performance as good as Tim Curry.”

You can check out Skarsgard as Pennywise in full costume and makeup here. Directing the movie is Andres Muschietti, who was previously announced as the director of the Shadow of the Colossus video game adaptation. However, that project has apparently not moved forward since its announcement.

Regarding Pennywise, Muschietti told Entertainment Weekly, “Pennywise shows up, he’s front and center, and he does his show. He has an act. So it’s weird all the time, and every little thing implies a further threat.”

It opens in theaters on September 8, 2017. In addition to Skarsgard, it features Steven Williams (X-Files), Javier Botet (The Revenant), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Megan Charpentier (Resident Evil: Retribution), and Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special).

The clown horror story isn’t the only Stephen King novel getting adapted for film. Idris Elba (Pacific Rim) is starring as the Gunslinger in the upcoming movie The Dark Tower, opposite Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) as the Man in Black.

  • Fuller House Renewed for Third Season

    — Fuller House (@fullerhouse) December 25, 2016

The Fuller House renewal order from Netflix comes just weeks after Season 2 debut on December 9. The first season of Fuller House debuted in late February this year, with the Season 2 announcement coming in early March. A premiere date for Season 3 has not been announced.

Fuller House is a spinoff from the beloved ’80s and ’90s family show. The new show follows the widowed D.J. Tanner-Fuller (played by Candace Cameron Bure) as she raises her three children. Sister Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) and the former-neighbor Kimmy Gibler (Andrea Barber) move in with DJ at the Tanner home in San Francisco to help raise her children.

Reactions were mixed for the first two seasons, from critics and fans alike. Netflix has not shared any viewership numbers for the show, but they were apparently good enough, as the show continues on.

Players who complete three matches will earn 1,000 Gold and this rad-looking portrait:

    • Snowballs
      • Pick from one of three randomly selected Heroes before entering the Cursed Hollow. Be quick about it though, you only have 30 seconds to choose!
      • Two types of Snowball items will appear on the ground throughout the match
        • Fluffy Snowball
          • A speedy snowball that hits a single enemy Hero in a line skill-shot while ignoring Minions and Structures
          • Knocks targets back and deals significant damage
        • Heavy Snowball
          • An area-targeted explosion of snow that deals extra damage to non-Heroic targets
          • Adds a 60% slow to all damaged targets that decays over 2 seconds
        • Throw Snowball ability will appear next to your ability bar when you are holding a Snowball (Default Hotkey: F)
        • Heroes can walk over Snowballs to pick them up and can only hold one Snowball at a time
    • Tribute Spawns
      • When the first tribute phase arrives, two tributes will initially spawn together – one five seconds after the other.
      • When a player picks up a tribute, a new one will spawn somewhere else after a 5 second delay, meaning there will generally be two tributes alive.
      • This type of “rolling” tribute spawning continues until either team is cursed.
      • Tributes do not spawn during a curse or for 60 seconds after a curse.
      • The event will never spawn enough tributes to allow both teams to get cursed at the same time.
    • Destroy the enemy team’s Core to win the match!

  • Xbox Exec Clarifies Comments About DLC Exclusivity and More

Xbox executive Phil Spencer has spoken out to clarify some comments he made earlier about how the video game industry can grow in the future.

In 2015, Spencer said he wanted that year’s E3 show to focus more on Microsoft’s own franchises and expanding them. Asked on Twitter recently if this is still Microsoft’s directive, Spencer said it is. He cited things like EA Access, Fallout mods, the Game Preview program, and cross-play between Xbox One and PC that are things that “move gaming forward,” and in some cases are only available on Xbox.

“Our [first-party] IP should do the same,” Spencer said, referencing efforts that push gaming forward.

He went on to say the continued support for Halo 5, particularly its Forge mode, is an example of Microsoft continuing to invest in and grow its own franchises.

As for what Spencer doesn’t want to do, he said, “Paying marketing funds so another console’s base can’t play a piece of content doesn’t feel like growth.”

This might sound like a dig at Sony’s timed-exclusivity deal with Activision for Call of Duty and Destiny DLC, but Spencer doesn’t see it that way. “People getting worked up on this,” he said when someone suggested he was being hypocritical. “Never said Xbox has never done this, not calling out others, just not practice I like, that’s it.”

Microsoft has its own co-marketing deals, too, one of which is with Ubisoft for The Division DLC.

What do you make of Spence’s comments? Let us know in the comments below!

In other Madden news, EA has released a silly new video in which cover star Rob Gronkowski jokes about the Madden Curse–watch it here.

  • Silly Madden 17 Video Stars Gronk, Jokes About Madden Curse

New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski became just the latest player to go down with an injury after being named the cover star for a Madden game when he hurt his back this season. The “Madden Curse” strikes again? Maybe. Whatever the case, EA and Gronk appear to be taking it in stride.

His on-field season with the first-place Patriots is over, but No. 87 is staying busy off the field. Here’s a silly Madden NFL 17 video in which the Curse comes to life in a weird way–check it out:

“I don’t believe in the curse,” the pro football player told Esquire earlier this year. “I’ve never really believed in that type of stuff. And Odell [Beckham] last year, with the year he had. Calvin Johnson beat the receiving record when he was on the cover. Richard Sherman went to the Pro Bowl the year he was on it. So I believe all that’s in the way past. Now it’s future time.”

Well that’s the last time we put a @Patriots player on the cover of @EAMaddenNFL #maddencurse pic.twitter.com/IJKevhsal6

    — Peter Moore (@petermooreEA) December 1, 2016

Real or not, the Madden Curse was eerily consistent years ago. In 2009, Madden NFL 10 co-cover star Troy Polamalu suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the season opener. After a string of injuries, 2007 cover star Shaun Alexander went from the NFL’s Most Valuable Player to being a backup running back in just two years.

The list goes on: Madden NFL 06 cover athlete Donovan McNabb suffered a season-ending hernia halfway through the year. Finally, 2004 cover athlete Michael Vick missed most of the subsequent season due to a major leg injury.

  • Guillermo del Toro Says "F**k Konami" Again

Guillermo del Toro Says "F**k Konami" Again

Director Guillermo del Toro has spoken out again to criticize Konami, the publisher he was working with for the canceled Hideo Kojima game, Silent Hills.

“F**k Konami,” was his message. Tweeting today on Christmas, del Toro joked about that being as true as other messages this time of year. Here’s the tweet:

    No Caption Provided

Del Toro showed up in a recent trailer for Kojima’s next game, Death Stranding. The very weird trailer aired during The Game Awards this month, and it featured none other than del Toro himself alongside Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen.

This isn’t the first time del Toro has publicly criticized Konami. Earlier this month, he had the same message: “F**k Konami.”

For its part, Konami has said it remains “committed to new Silent Hill titles,” though none have been announced. It added that the Silent Hills game was not actually very far in development, claiming it was only in the “embryonic” stage.

Silent Hills wasn’t the first video game project involving del Toro that fell apart. The director was working on a horror game called Insane with publisher THQ, but it never materialized, in part due to the company’s bankruptcy. After being burned twice, del Toro has said he doesn’t intend to try to make a game of his own again.

“I have proven to be the albatross of video games,” he said last year. “I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”

Del Toro’s newest project, the animated Netflix show Trollhunters, is out now.
