  • X-Men Director Bryan Singer Will Direct Pilot For New Spin-Off Show

X-Men Director Bryan Singer Will Direct Pilot For New Spin-Off Show

It was confirmed this week that a pilot for the X-Men TV show has been greenlit by Fox and Marvel TV, and now director Bryan Singer has joined the production.

    No Caption Provided

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Singer will helm the pilot episode of the currently untitled show. Singer is the filmmaker most closely associated with the X-Men franchise, having previously directed four of the six movies, including 2000’s original X-Men and last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Singer will also executively produce the new series.

The show has been developed by Matt Nix, who previously created the acclaimed thriller series Burn Notice. It will focus on young mutants who go on the run with their parents to escape government agents.

At the recent Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Nix explained that the show would connect directly to the X-Men movie universe. “A fan of the movies but also the comics would not be disoriented at all as to where this fits in the mythology,” he said. “If you look at the movies, which take place from–they started in 2003 to now–they don’t all line up perfectly. I’m not slavishly fitting them into a particular slot.

“But at the same time, if you like the world of the movies, there are definite nods to the movies. It exists in the same general universe.”

One familiar set of characters that fans can expect are Sentinels. Last week, X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner explained that while Sentinels would be part of the show, they might not be the giant robots familiar to X-Men fans. “Matt’s show is part of the [X-Men] world in terms of there are mutants, mutants are hated, and there are Sentinels–though very different from what we’ve seen before,” she said.

The new show isn’t Fox’s first attempt at an X-Men TV series. In 2015 it was reported that the network was developing a show called Hellfire, but this was later abandoned in place of the new series. Another X-Men related show–Legion–is set to premiere on FX next month.

  • Project Scorpio Website Removes Mention Of VR – Report

Project Scorpio Website Removes Mention Of VR – Report

The promotional website for Project Scorpio has apparently been changed to remove “hi-fidelity VR” from its list of bullet points, potentially suggesting Microsoft’s plans for VR may have changed.

This change was spotted by people on NeoGAF recently. The live version of the Project Scorpio website contains the image below, which touts the release date (holiday 2017) and some of the console’s technical details such as six teraflops of power, 320 GB memory, and 8 CPU cores. “The most powerful console ever, featuring six teraflops of graphical processing power, true 4K gaming, and compatibility with Xbox One games and accessories,” a line on the page reads.

    No Caption Provided

This cached version of the page shows that “hi-fidelity VR” was at one time featured on the page. It’s not exactly clear when this was removed or why. GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details on the timeline and reasoning. We’ll update this post with anything we hear back.

Virtual reality was among the features that Microsoft announced for Project Scorpio when it revealed the console at E3 2016. The removal of a line of text on the website doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft is abandoning its plans for virtual reality, but it does seem like something is going on.

In November of last year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he thinks VR will eventually “find its spot” in gaming–but it might not be soon. “We designed Scorpio as a VR-capable console. Whether that happens this year, next year, or the year after…”

“I don’t think the creators in the game space have yet found–well, they haven’t obviously perfected the craft of building VR games,” Spencer added. “It’s so early; I think we’re a couple of years before we’ll really see that hit mainstream.”

Project Scorpio, or whatever Microsoft decides to call it, launches this holiday. Microsoft has not announced a price point for the system but has repeatedly referred to it as the “most powerful console ever made,” and will surely be priced above the Xbox One.

In other Project Scorpio news, details about the system’s RAM have emerged, while Spencer said this week that the system is coming along great.

  • Project Scorpio: Xbox Boss Shares New Update

2017 is set to be a big year for Xbox, with the launch of Project Scorpio this holiday. Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has shed a little more light on how the system is coming along.

Writing on Twitter, Spencer started off by talking about the games being prepared to launch for the console. “I don’t think we’ve had bring up of full games this early for new [hardware]; gives teams time to tune their games for best results,” he said.

In another tweet, Spencer was asked why he’s even more enthusiastic about the console now compared to when it was announced at E3 last summer. “Actual games running where I can see the fidelity on screen, feel the gameplay,” he said. “For me that’s when it becomes real.”

In other Scorpio news, a report this week claimed to have new information about the console’s RAM details–read the story here. Earlier this week, Spencer said he recently played games on Scorpio for the first time and was impressed. The system will play your existing Xbox One games.

Scorpio is due to launch this holiday, but it remains to be seen when Microsoft will start to show it off. Earlier this month, Spencer said he is unsure if Microsoft will show off the system before E3 in June.

Microsoft has time and again referred to Scorpio as the “most powerful console ever made,” and claimed that the performance advantage over the PS4 Pro will be noticeable.

  • Brutal New Conan Exiles Cinematic Trailer Arrives; Barbarian Edition Announced

Brutal New Conan Exiles Cinematic Trailer Arrives; Barbarian Edition Announced

Funcom today released a new cinematic trailer for the upcoming sandbox game Conan Exiles. The video sets up the game’s story, which starts pretty dramatically with players abandoned in the desert.

Conan cuts down a woman from a cross and they battle together, at first fighting against Warg-like creatures. With the beasts defeated, Conan hands his axe to the woman, as the narrator says, “What will you become?” You don’t play as Conan in the game but instead a brand-new character.

This trailer was produced by Bläck Studios, a Swedish company that also worked on Mass Effect: Andromeda, Watch Dogs 2, and Mad Max.

Funcom also today announced the Barbarian Edition of Conan Exiles. It comes with bonuses such as multiple digital books, including a 496-page “Coming of Conan” book featuring illustrations. It also includes the soundtrack and in-game items for the Age of Conan MMO, Hyborian Adventures.

The Barbarian Edition sells for $60, while the standard edition will go for $30. Check out the image below or read this blog post to see everything that the premium version comes with.

Finally, Funcom announced exactly when Conan Exiles will be available. It launches through Steam Early Access for PC at 9 PM PT on January 30. The game is also coming to Xbox One, but not until this Spring. No date has been set for PlayStation 4.

  • DC's Aquaman Cast Pictured Together For First Time

DC's Aquaman Cast Pictured Together For First Time

Pre-production has started on DC’s Aquaman, which is set for release next year. Director James Wan has tweeted an image of himself and the three main cast members–Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and Patrick Wilson, about to read through the script together. Check it out below:

    No Caption Provided

Aquaman will star Momoa as the King of Atlantis, while Heard is to portray Mera, the Queen of the Sea. Wilson was announced in the villain role last month, playing Aquaman’s evil half brother Orm Marius, aka Ocean Master. Wilson has actually already featured in the DC Cinematic Universe, with a voice cameo as the President towards the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Both Momoa and Heard will appear in next year’s Justice League prior to Aquaman. In November, the first image of Mera was released, while Momoa can be seen in this recent image from Justice League.

In a recent interview, Wan explained why he was drawn to Aquaman. “I love the possibility of creating a whole new world,” he told Uproxx. “I’ve always wanted to do a world creation story and visually create this amazing, incredible, magical kingdom.

“I love the fact that Aquaman is an underdog character. I love the fact that people like to make fun of him. I feel the bar is a lot lower and I can have fun with him! What it allows me to do: I think people are a lot less precious with him than, let’s say, you were doing a Spider-Man or a Batman or whatever.”

Aquaman hits theaters on October 5, 2018.

  • X-Men Spin-Off TV Show Gets Pilot Order

X-Men Spin-Off TV Show Gets Pilot Order

The X-Men TV show is happening. It has been confirmed that a pilot has been ordered for the series, which will focus on young mutants who go on the run with their parents to escape government agents.

    No Caption Provided

The show has been in development for some time, and head writer Matt Nix has spoken about his plans for it over the past few weeks. As Variety reports, Fox and Marvel TV are now officially moving forward with a pilot.

At the recent Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Nix explained that the new show would connect directly to the X-Men movie universe.

Nix also stated that fans could also expect to see some familiar X-Men in there. “There are a certain amount of [familiar] characters that I can use and am using and then other characters I’m inventing,” he said. “But everything is invented with a nod toward the existing mythology.”

The new show isn’t Fox’s first attempt at an X-Men series. In 2015 it was reported that the network was developing a show called Hellfire, but this was later abandoned in place of the new series. Another X-Men related show–Legion–is set to premiere on FX next month.
