Weekly Recap: Battlefront 2 Details, Nintendo Switch "Weak" Lineup, $500M Oculus Lawsuit

    No Caption Provided

Happy weekend! Here’s a recap of all the week’s big stories and some you may have missed.

    THE BIG STUFF:

Electronic Arts finally confirmed this week that Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will have a single-player campaign. The publisher also said it will feature content from multiple Star Wars eras, unlike the first game. Battlefront 2 is coming out this fall, presumably for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. [Full story]

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima addressed the criticism that the Nintendo Switch launch lineup is “weak.” He said Nintendo is focusing on ensuring that it has a strong lineup of games that come out on a regular basis, so launch may not be the most important element. [Full story]

A Texas federal jury weighed in on the Oculus vs. ZeniMax case this week, finding Facebook/Oculus needing to pay $500 million over claims that it stole trade secrets to create Oculus Rift. [Full story]

    THE OTHER STUFF:

As it does every year, EA Sports ran a simulation of the Super Bowl using Madden and predicted that the New England Patriots would win 27-24 in a thrilling game. The sim has been eerily accurate in the past. But we’ll know for sure after the big game this Sunday, February 5.

Yooka-Laylee has gone gold. That means initial development on the gorgeous-looking platformer is finished. The game comes out for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and maybe Nintendo Switch on April 11.

The Banner 3 is officially going to happen. The game’s Kickstarter campaign soared past its $200,000 target this week; funding currently stands at around $236,000 and there’s still a while to go.

A new faction for the Witcher card game, Gwent, has arrived. The Nilfgaard–you might remember them from The Witcher 3–has been added. Check out the video below to get the scoop on how they work.

Walmart seems to be getting more aggressive as it relates to taking on Amazon. The store this week announced free, two-day shipping on many items–and you don’t need a membership. Get the scoop on the story here at TechCrunch.

The classic movie Apocalypse Now is being made into a video game. Pretty cool, huh? Now, the developers answered a lot of questions in a Reddit AMA this week.

We have to wait until March to play Mass Effect Andromeda, but now we know more about it, specifically the teammate Liam. Get all the details here.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

Awesome Art Picks: Supergirl, Wolverine, Plastic Man, and More

Each week we search and gather up the coolest comic book art you won’t see in actual comics. The reason you won’t is because professional artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, blogs, and Tumblrs. Some artists even arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out. This is a way to see the artists working on one book draw characters from other comics or publishers.

  • Walking Dead Mid-Season Premiere Promo Teases Epic Fightback

The Walking Dead returns next week, and a new promo video for the mid-season premiere has been released. It features interviews with the cast and crew, plus footage from the upcoming episodes. Check it out below:

The first half of Season 7 was a controversial one. The opening episode was the most violent of the entire series, leading to some fans complaining that it had gone too far. An initial suggestion that producers had toned down the violence elsewhere in the season was quickly denied.

Last week star Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick in the show, defended the season so far. “You don’t want it to be negative, but if you’re endeavoring to make something different and unique and challenging–and hopefully dangerous and new–sometimes it might provoke different reactions from people,” he said. “But I stand by everybody telling this story, particularly the writers and everybody directing it. I think it’s a very brave, bold, and also challenging story that we’re attempting.”

Lincoln went on to explain that the levels of violence early on, plus the slower pace of subsequent episodes, were very deliberate. “I know people want to watch more than one episode a week at a time just because it’s kind of compulsive, the storytelling, and they want to know what happens next,” he said. “And I think sometimes having to wait is a good thing because you get to recap on other things and view it in a different way.”

The Walking Dead Season 7 returns on February 12. Last month, a series of cryptic posters were released. An eighth season is also on the way and is scheduled to start in late 2017 with the show’s 100th episode.

  • New PS4 Update Detailed, Will Bring External HDD Support

Sony has detailed the features coming in the PlayStation 4‘s next firmware update, which is codenamed “Sasuke.”

Update 4.50 will introduce external hard drive support, allowing external storage that supports USB 3.0 to be recognised by the console. According to the official PlayStation Blog, hard drives of up to 8TB are compatible; you’ll also be able to download and install directly to them.

Custom wallpapers will also be added as part of the update, so you can “set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen.” Effects such as drop-shadows on text and dimmed function area will “help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.” Screenshots can be edited in the Sharefactory to be further customised.

The quick menu, which is accessed by holding down the PS button on the PS4’s controller, will also be refreshed to “make it even more accessible.” It will cover less of the gameplay screen and give players quicker access to Party features.

The notification list has been simplified: it is now a single list that surfaces information on game alerts, downloads, uploads. Additionally, the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed has also been added.

Finally, the update will let 3D movies to be viewable in stereoscopic 3D using the PlayStation VR headset.

Sony has said there “are more features included in [update] 4.50,” and it will have “additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.”

On February 2, Sony announced it shipped 9.7 million PS4 consoles in the three months spanning October 1 to December 31, 2016. This is an improvement over the same period in 2015, when it shipped 8.4 million units.

  • Nier: Automata Has Gone Gold

Action-RPG Nier: Automata has gone gold, publisher Square Enix has announced.

The game’s producer, Yosuke Saito tweeted the news (translated by Gematsu), apparently stating that the game actually went gold long ago. He didn’t specify exactly when the game was completed, however.

If you can’t wait until the game’s March 7 release date for PS4 (March 10 in Europe and Australia; later in 2017 on PC) to play it, you can check out a free demo on the PlayStation Store now.

The demo’s description on the Store says it is set in an abandoned factory, and it “follows android 2B’s mission to destroy a massive enemy weapon that lies within.”

The game is made by PlatinumGames, the developer of acclaimed action titles like The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta.

Platinum was also developing the Xbox One and PC-exclusive game Scalebound, before that got canceled by publisher Microsoft. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has since said the game’s cancellation is “better for Xbox gamers.”

Stephen King's It: New Images Reveal The Losers' Club

The young stars of the upcoming movie version of Stephen King’s classic horror novel It have been been revealed. They include Stranger Things‘ breakout star Finn Wolfhard–check them all out below:

    Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5

Wolfhard plays Richie Tozier, while the other cast members are Jaeden Lieberher (as Bill Denbrough), Sophie Lillis (Beverly Marsh), Wyatt Oleff {Stanley Uris), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ben Hanscomb), Jack Dylan Grazer (Eddie Kaspbrak), and Chosen Jacobs (Mike Hanlon).

The movie also stars Bill Skarsgard as the terrifying demonic clown Pennywise. Skarsgard was first revealed in costume last summer, and a creepy recent image showed Pennywise emerging from a sewer pipe.

The movie is scheduled for a September release. It is expected to be the first of two films–in the novel, a group of teens overcome their fears to eventually defeat the creature known as It. Years later he returns, and as adults they must work together to finish the job. The first movie will be about the children’s story, while a second will chronicle the adults’ narrative.

The It adaptation has been a long time coming. Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation) was attached to direct at one stage, but eventually dropped out due to creative differences. Will Poulter (The Revenant) was pegged to play Pennywise, but scheduling conflicts also led him to withdraw from the project.

It hits theaters on September 8, 2017.

  • Hideo Kojima Is "Afraid" Of Political Climate In America

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series and the upcoming Death Stranding, says he’s both “interested” and “afraid” of politics in America right now.

In an interview with Glixel, Kojima was asked about the current political climate, and whether it troubles him. He responded by saying, “It’s important to talk about the world we’re in now, so you can show your children what kind of world awaits you, or what kind of world we should make.”

He continued: “I’m definitely interested in what’s happening in politics now, especially in America. With politics moving to the right, I’m afraid of this kind of movement in America.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Kojima said he never wants to stop making games. “I want to continue to work and create games until I die,” he said. “I don’t want to leave work and spend the rest of my life fishing. I want to be there on the front lines with the young blood until I die.

“However, as you stated, I’ve been working very hard for 30 years, so in the back of my mind I had an inkling to take a break. Actually, my family was telling me I should take a break, but when I talked to my friends around the world, they said ‘You don’t have time! People are waiting to know what your next game will be,’ so I decided to continue along that road of making a triple-A experience for all the people who are waiting for it. I did think about taking a break, and maybe make a short movie, but ultimately I decided to make a game.”

The former Metal Gear director did say he wants to make a film one day, however. “I love movies, so at some point in time I would love to make a movie.

“If I were to film a movie, it would focus on the things a movie can do best, and it would be very different from my games. I had many offers and conversations of that sort with Hollywood, but right now we’re creating Death Stranding so it’s right to focus solely on that.”

After leaving his previous employer Konami in 2015, Kojima founded his new development studio, Kojima Productions, as an independent company. The studio is partnering with Sony for its first project, Death Stranding.

In splitting from Konami, Kojima left behind both Metal Gear and the now-canceled Silent Hills project. The director has previously spoken about leaving Konami and his memories of his time developing Metal Gear Solid whilst there. Read his thoughts in our in-depth interview here.

  • New Mass Effect: Andromeda Trailer Features Multiplayer Gameplay

EA has released a new video for Mass Effect: Andromeda. Although it is intended to show off the bonuses that you can get for preordering the game, we’re also given a brief look at some combat gameplay from BioWare’s upcoming RPG.

The preorder bonuses include the Deep Space Explorer armor for protagonist Ryder, a special skin for the Nomad vehicle, and a booster pack for Andromeda’s multiplayer mode. Based on the video, it seems this booster will allow you to accrue experience and level up a little quicker.

The aforementioned gameplay looks to be from the multiplayer and show characters using Biotic powers. At one point a Krogan is shown doing a ground pound. As noted in the trailer, the footage is captured in engine and “representative of the game experience.” Check out the video above.

BioWare hasn’t shared many details about Mass Effect: Andromeda’s multiplayer mode, but it looks to be similar to Mass Effect 3’s, which involved players battling against waves of AI-controlled enemies. Weapons and items delivered through loot boxes could be used to customise characters and make them more powerful.

Andromeda launches on March 21 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Last month, EA released a new cinematic trailer that showed off some of the teammate characters and the bad guy, Archon–watch it here. For more on the trailer and another new one, check out the story below.

In other Andromeda news, BioWare has confirmed there is no crossplay support and that the PC version has an uncapped frame rate.

  • Marvel's Runaways TV Show Cast Announced

Marvel's Runaways TV Show Cast Announced

A TV adaptation of the Marvel comic book Runaways was announced last year, and now the main cast for the Hulu show has been revealed.

    No Caption Provided

Runaways will focus on a group of teenagers who can’t stand each other but come together to fight crime when they discover that their parents are part of a supervillain team. As Deadline reports, the six young stars are largely newcomers. They are Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, and Allegra Acosta.

In August 2016, Hulu ordered a pilot episode, plus scripts for potential future episodes if the series is greenlit. Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are producing, and the pilot will start shooting this month.

Runaways was at one stage being considered for a Marvel movie, with Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pierce hired by the studio to write a script. “We were really close to being made, and then this movie started to happen called The Avengers,” Pierce revealed on the Q&A podcast in 2013. “It pulled focus from the unheard-of brand Runaways, and it really did kind of consume the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

The title was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, and the first issue was published in 2003. The book ran until 2009, although the characters have since appeared in numerous other Marvel titles.
