  • Nintendo Switch Production Doubled In Bid To Meet Demand, Says Report

Nintendo is reacting to the demand for Switch consoles by doubling the amount of units produced, according to a new report.

The Japanese company planned to manufacture 8 million consoles before the end of March 2018, states the Wall Street Journal (via GamesIndustry), citing “people briefed on the plans.” That number has now been “at least” doubled to 16 million.

Though official Switch sales figures are yet to be revealed, Nintendo has stated that the hybrid device is the fastest-selling Nintendo console ever in the Americas, Europe, and Australia. One report said earlier this week that around 1.5 million Switch units were sold in the device’s first week on the market, meaning it has nearly met Nintendo’s first-month expectations of 2 million sales already.

Given the higher-than-expected demand, Nintendo now believes it can sell 10 million consoles in the next year. That demand has seen the Switch, along with its flagship game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, run out of stock at many major retailers.

In addition, the Switch Pro Controller is seemingly impossible to find right now, while Nintendo still struggles to keep up with demand for the miniature NES Classic Edition.

Nintendo will be hoping to maintain–and meet–demand for the console throughout 2017, with major releases such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, and Splatoon 2 on the way relatively soon.

Spider-Man Spin-Off, Venom, Gets Release Date

Sony has been working on expanding its Spider-Man universe, and since it started working with Marvel, it seems like the franchise is moving in the right direction. A tweet from Exhibitor Relations stated that the first Spider-Man spin-off, Venom, will be coming to theaters on October 5, 2018.

    No Caption Provided

Sony has a couple Spider-Man spin-offs planned, including Venom and Sinister Six, which were revealed in the infamous Sony hack back in 2015. Last year, reports came in that the Venom movie was moving forward with Dante Harper (Edge of Tomorrow) writing the script.

In addition, director Alex Kurtzman–director of the upcoming The Mummy reboot–will be at the helm of the Venom film. There is no news yet on the story for the upcoming film or if he will be introduced in this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which already has a sequel in the works.

The NPD Group has released its sales report for the United States during February 2017, including a top 10 list of the month’s best-selling games in terms of dollar sales.

Notably, the period tracked by NPD ends on February 25, which means Horizon Zero Dawn wasn’t yet out. For Honor led the way in the No.1 spot, while another big release, Nioh, made it to the No. 9 spot. The remainder of the list was primarily made up of the usual suspects.

January’s top 10 was led by Resident Evil 7, which dropped to No. 2 in February.

Overall, total video game sales were down 21 percent year-over-year, dropping to $724 million from $918.7 million last February. This was due primarily to a 30 percent drop in video game hardware, which fell to $204 million from $292.2 million. Software was also down 14 percent to $344.2 million from $402 million.

Last week, Sony confirmed that PS4 outsold Xbox One in the US during February, though it didn’t have a statement to share, as has become the norm. Microsoft did comment on the NPD report, though it focused on Xbox Live usage during the month. We’ll update this story with anything Nintendo has to share.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella noted, “3DS unit sales were up 77 percent versus January 2017 driven by the 3DS New Galaxy Style model and the 3DS Limited Pikachu Yellow model.

As is now the case every month, these lists are ranked by US dollar sales and combine physical sales with digital sales from select publishers (absences include Nintendo and Battle.net). • Sonic Mania Delayed; Project Sonic 2017 Gets A Name

Sonic Mania Delayed; Project Sonic 2017 Gets A Name

With the Sonic series recently celebrating its 25th anniversary, Sega today hosted a panel at South by Southwest where it talked about two upcoming games: Sonic Mania and what’s been known as Project Sonic 2017.

On the Sonic Mania front, the key news was that the game has been delayed from this spring to summer. A more specific release date wasn’t shared, but Sega did tease new enemies, preorder bonuses, a collector’s edition vinyl album, and the return of the Flying Battery Zone. You can watch a video of that above.

As for Sonic 2017, the game is now officially called Sonic Forces. It runs on a brand-new engine called The Hedgehog Engine 2 and is still due out later this year. The name is a reference to the battle between the forces of good and evil. You can see a new piece of concept art for it below.

Additionally, Sega showed off a brief clip of the first Sonic Forces gameplay. It revealed some fast-paced third-person gameplay of Sonic moving through the city seen in last year’s reveal trailer. This will be published online for everyone to see tomorrow, March 17. There will be multiple paths through levels and two other styles of gameplay, one of which centers around the classic-style Sonic seen in the aforementioned trailer.

  • Watch The Silly First Trailer For Wallace And Gromit Studio's Next Big Movie

The next movie from the Oscar winning Wallace and Gromit animation studio Aardman, Early Man, has gotten its first trailer. The movie follows a “plucky caveman” named Dug (voiced by Eddie Redmayne), who journeys through a prehistoric world alongside his trusty creature-friend Hognob.

As you can see, things do not go exactly to plan for Dug, who gets into trouble when trying to find his dinner one day. Take a look:

Early Man is directed by Nick Park, and represents his first time back in the director’s chair since winning an Academy Award for Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

The movie also features the voices of Tom Hiddleston (Kong: Skull Island), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter series).

Early Man premieres in January 2018. Some of Aardman’s other movies include Chicken Run, Flushed Away, and Shaun of the Sheep. The studio’s Wallace and Gromit series was spun into an episodic game from The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games.

  • Capcom Says Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite Is "Simplistic," Street Fighter 5 "In A Good Place Now"

Capcom Says Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite Is "Simplistic," Street Fighter 5 "In A Good Place Now"

Ever since Capcom announced Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite last year, the developer stressed that it will be an “accessible” game. That thread continues with new comments from Capcom Europe COO Stuart Turner, who said in an interview that Infinite is “far more simplistic” than Capcom’s previous fighting games.

Speaking to GI.biz, Turner said Infinite is a “great introduction to the [fighting] genre as a whole.” In addition to being more “simplistic,” the game will be “technically easier to pick up and play.” Turner added that Infinite will have a good chance of appealing to a wide audience because it will feature well-known characters from the Marvel universe such as Iron Man and Captain America.

Although Capcom and Marvel have used words like “simplistic” and “accessible” to describe Infinite, the companies have emphatically stressed that Infinite’s efforts to be more accessible do not come at the cost of depth.

Turner said the fighting genre’s fanbase typically skews older than other categories of games. The challenge then becomes bringing younger players into the fold, which Capcom is eager to do for Infinite.

Turner also said that Capcom is a market-leader in the fighting game space, and the company needs to continue pushing forward to help the genre overall.

    No Caption Provided

“Fighting as a genre is an interesting one,”he said. “It’s an area that we as a company excel in, but it’s always one that we need to take more of a lead on for the success and health of the whole genre.”

Also in the interview, Turner said the rise in popularity of competitive gaming should help bolster the appeal of fighting games in the coming years.

The interview also touches on another major Capcom fighting game, Street Fighter V. Turner acknowledged that the game had a “difficult start,” but said it is now “in a very good place.” He said fans can expect more content in the future, as Capcom will support the PlayStation 4 and PC game for “many more years.”

“I still believe the service game model is absolutely the thing for Street Fighter,” Turner said. “It was always going to be a huge challenge to take a well-loved brand from a traditional boxed product to a service game business model. The way a game like that is produced, developed, tested, and marketed are all hugely different to a traditional boxed game.

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that we didn’t get much right with Street Fighter V at launch; we’ve learnt and put things in place that will avoid such issues ever arising in the future. Getting an offering that’s right for consumers first should be always be our priority.”

You can read the full interview here at GI.biz.

Earlier this week, Capcom outlined the latest Season 2 balance update coming to Street Fighter V. Read this blog post to get all the details.

  • New Power Rangers Movie Clip Shows Off Mastodon Zord

A new clip from Power Rangers has arrived. The big screen reboot of the much-loved ’90s TV show hits theaters later this month, and this new clip sees Zack take the giant Mastodon Zord out for a test drive. Check it out below:

This is the second clip to be released recently. Check out the first here, plus these recent TV spots, and this full-length trailer.

In a recent interview, Power Rangers director Dean Israelite spoke about the decision to give the Mastodon Zord eight legs, as opposed to four as in the TV show.

“The idea is the Zords are machines that take on the form of the most powerful organisms of the planet they’re on,” he told Collider. “When these Zords came to Earth, dinosaurs reigned supreme and so they took on the image and the spirit of these dinosaurs–that’s the mythology that we’ve put into the movie. But in the concept that we’ve created they’re meant to be inspired by those animals–not an actual, literal, version of it, and so we decided we wanted to take certain liberties, too.

“The other component of it is almost more of a practical component. We look at these renderings and we create a 3D space and we look at how they should move, and you learn a lot from that. And the Mastodon is so big that we realized that with added legs it would just move better in a CG environment, and we’d be able to make it a more nimble machine. So it felt kind of like practical; if you were an alien creating this machine, you would want those added limbs.”

Power Rangers opens on March 24. It stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, and Ludi Lin as the Rangers. Bryan Cranston portrays the Rangers’ mentor, Zordon, while Elizabeth Banks plays villainous Rita Repulsa.

  • Nintendo Switch Versions Of Batman And Guardians Of The Galaxy Telltale Games Potentially Leaked

Nintendo Switch versions of Telltale’s Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy series have potentially been leaked. Multiple retailers have listed Switch versions of the two episodic games, despite no official announcement from Telltale.

UK shop 365games and Russian store GameBuy have listed physical versions of both Guardians of the Galaxy and Batman for Nintendo’s new console, while US retailer Newegg also has a product page for Guardians of the Galaxy. The Marvel series’ Telltale adaptation was announced last year for “consoles, PC, and mobile devices,” but those consoles were not specified. GameSpot has contacted Telltale PR for comment; we’ll update if we hear back.

The developer’s Batman series, meanwhile, released last year. Episode 1 started off strong, but Episodes 2 and 3 couldn’t live up to the series’ initial promise.

Telltale is currently working on its Guardians of the Galaxy series and a third season of The Walking Dead. Episodes 1 and 2 have been great so far, and Episode 3 is due to launch at some point this month. Read our reviews below to find out more.
