  • System Shock 3 Might Come To PS4 And Xbox One, Not Just PC

The System Shock series started all the way back in 1994, with a sequel to follow in 1999. It’s been nearly 18 years since that last release, but another, System Shock 3, is due to come out at some point soon. Now, Payday 2 developer Starbreeze has announced that it has signed a deal with the threequel’s developer OtherSide Entertainment–which is headed up by Deus Ex creator Warren Spector–to publish the game and bring it “to PC and other platforms.”

“System Shock is one of those iconic franchises in the history of games that still gets my blood going and Mr. Spector is one of the founding fathers of the modern action-RPG” said Bo Andersson-Klint, Starbreeze’s CEO. “We’re greatly looking forward to bringing System Shock 3 to players worldwide in our collaboration with OtherSide Entertainment and Warren Spector’s team. I’ll be first in line to play.”

It’s not clear what the publisher means by “other platforms,” but it might suggest that the third title in the series could come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in addition to PC. When contacted for comment about what platforms the announcement might refer to, Starbreeze simply replied, “Other exact platforms are still pending; we’ll share more news about System Shock 3 in the future.”

As part of the deal, “Starbreeze will be able to recoup 120 percent of its full investment including marketing costs,” with the company’s share of revenues becoming 50 percent after that point is reached. OtherSide will retain 100 percent of System Shock 3’s rights, meanwhile.

Starbreeze has previously developed games such as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and cyberpunk shooter Syndicate. More recently, the company has turned its hand to publishing, and it recently announced it will handle the marketing and distribution for Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2.

In addition to the threequel, there is another System Shock game in the works. Night Dive Studios, with the help of Kickstarter funding, is developing a remake of the original game–a game that went on to inspire other titles like BioShock and Deus Ex. The reboot is scheduled to come out in Q2 2018 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

  • Aquaman Movie Could Film At These Gorgeous Tropical Locations

The Aquaman movie is to be directed by James Wan, who previously helmed such smashes as Furious 7 and the Conjuring movies. Wan is location scouting for the 2018 release, and posted some images of the incredible-looking places that are being considered for the movie. Check them out below, and see more on Wan’s Instagram page.:

Aquaman will star Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis, while Amber Heard is to portray Mera, the Queen of the Sea. In December, Patrick Wilson was cast as Orm Marius, Aquaman’s villainous half-brother.

Both Momoa and Heard will feature in this year’s Justice League prior to Aquaman. Earlier this month, director Zack Snyder revealed some vfx test footage of Aquaman’s underwater lair–check it out here.

In an interview last year, Wan explained why he was drawn to Aquaman. “I love the possibility of creating a whole new world,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to do a world creation story and visually create this amazing, incredible, magical kingdom.

“I love the fact that Aquaman is an underdog character. I love the fact that people like to make fun of him. I feel the bar is a lot lower and I can have fun with him! What it allows me to do: I think people are a lot less precious with him than, let’s say, you were doing a Spider-Man or a Batman or whatever.”

Aquaman hits theaters on October 5, 2018.

  • Beauty And The Beast Actor Talks About His Moonwalking, Misbehaving Horse

With Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast set to hit theaters this Friday, some of the stars are doing the late night TV circuit to promote the film. LeFou actor Josh Gad appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon last night and shared a story about his horse and how it wouldn’t always cooperate during filming.

The horse’s name is Buddy, but he was no friend to Gad. For the scene where he and Gaston (Luke Evans) rode into town, Gad’s horse actually “moonwalked” backwards, Gad recalled, while Evans’ steed had no problems. Things got worse. Gad’s horse then galloped through the village set, apparently coming close to crashing into Belle actress Emma Watson. “And then the horse-trainer, literally [with] tears in his eyes, comes up to me and says, ‘I’m so sorry; I’ve never seen that happen before.’”

In a second clip, Gad talked about how his children were terrified to see their father’s face on the LeFou Beauty and the Beast poster. “It’s like an overweight Jack Nicholson,” Gad said about how his character looks in the poster. Gad and Fallon then do some pretty excellent Jack Nicholson impressions.

Beauty and the Beast opens on March 17, and projections are showing that it will be a huge hit. A recent report said the magical movie could bring in as much as $245 million worldwide for its opening weekend.

It is just the latest live-action adaptation of a classic Disney film, following Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Alice in Wonderland.

  • Gears Of War Creator On Why VR Might Take A Long Time To Take Off

Gears Of War Creator On Why VR Might Take A Long Time To Take Off

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has “a few ideas” for what he might do with virtual reality, but don’t expect his studio, Boss Key, to release a VR game anytime soon.

Speaking to GameSpot, Bleszinski said one of the problems with VR today is that the install base is not big enough. Additionally, the current versions of the headsets leave something to be desired, while developers are facing steep costs, he said.

    No Caption Provided

“VR is very near and dear to me. I have a few ideas I’d love to play with, but again the friction point is getting VR installed,” he explained. “Sony’s got a great headset but still it’s kind of clunky, the price point, there’s a lot of shovelware on VR right now. A lot of crappy Unity games where it’s like, ‘Oh look I’m throwing a can.’ Yeah, big deal right? No actual real games, and part of that is this catch 22 of a lot of the proper platform-holders of VR finding funding. You can’t make a really deep, great game arguably in VR for like a million bucks. So you’ve gotta really pony it up.”

One example of a “real VR game,” Bleszinski said, is Epic’s Robo Recall, which was announced at the Game Developers Conference last month.

“Yeah, it’s a wave shooter but, goddamn it looks good,” Bleszinski said. “The controls are perfect and they really knocked it out of the park. That’s the kind of stuff that needs to happen, as opposed to more friggin’ roller coasters and things like that. There’s also jump scare games that YouTubers want to do. So there’s a lot more to it, but there’s like six things right now that are really preventing VR from really exploding in a good way.”

Will VR ever become mainstream? Bleszinski thinks it could happen, but not soon.

“I think there’s enough people in Silicon Valley and beyond that have deep enough pockets to ride this out the long haul,” he said. “I think [Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg] saw the potential in Oculus in realizing like the first time I did touch demo and [Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey] was standing across from me as a VR ghost, even though he’s in the other room. That’s when it gets magical. If I could play catch with my niece in California, that’s pretty magical … but we’ve gotta start pushing through and working through it all.”

“Sony’s got a great headset but still it’s kind of clunky” — Bleszinski

Another example of a great VR game is Ubisoft’s Eagle Flight, according to Bleszinski. It delivers on a dream many people have of flying–and this can be an affecting, emotional experience.

“The story I like to tell people is when I did Eagle Flight and my wife was in the other room and I was just gushing making these kid sounds like, ‘he-he-he-he-he-he,’ and I handed her headset, and she was like, ‘Why’s it all wet?’ I’m like, ‘Because it moved me to tears.’ It’s like I’ve had that dream since I was six years old, of actually flying like an eagle.”

Bleszinski participated in an early round of venture capital funding for Oculus VR and said he made a “very sizable chunk of money” when Facebook bought the company for $2 billion.

Bleszinski’s current project is the PC shooter LawBreakers, which enters closed beta this week. Keep checking back with GameSpot in the days ahead for more from our conversation with the developer.

  • Here's What Gears Of War Creator Thinks About Gears Of War 4

Here's What Gears Of War Creator Thinks About Gears Of War 4

Gears of War 4 was the first brand-new entry in the series made internally at Microsoft after it acquired the series from Epic Games in 2014. It was the first game that creator Cliff Bleszinski did not work on (though Epic had its own ideas for a fourth Gears of War game). Now, Bleszinski has spoken out to say he has mixed feelings about Gears of War 4.

“What [Gears of War developer The Coalition boss Rod Fergusson] did was give the people what that want. He did the J.J. Abrams Episode VII,” he said, referencing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “I’ve watched Episode VII five times. I still get misty-eyed and get all excited but when I think objectively about it, I’m like, ‘There wasn’t a lot of risk there.’ So I’m hoping they take a little bit more risk in the future.”

    No Caption Provided

Gears of War 4 received a generally positive critical response. GameSpot’s review scored the Xbox One and PC game a 7/10, with reviewer Mike Mahardy saying the game was “teetering on the edge of something greater…”

Microsoft has not announced any new Gears of War games, but that’s more a question of when not if. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has suggested that a non-shooter Gears of War game could happen.

“Definitely when we got the team together and talked about the future of Gears of War, I think there’s multiple ways that you can tell that story,” he said. “Multiple gameplay genres. I think it’s a really big IP and it’s an IP that could exist in linear form, in books–we’ve seen that; in different gaming genres.”

Bleszinski’s current project is the PC shooter LawBreakers, which enters closed beta this week. Asked if the game could come to console, Bleszinski reiterated that developer Boss Key is “talking to people,” but stopped short of confirming anything.

“I would love for nothing more than for that to happen but it’s business. We’ll see,” he said.

Also in our interview, which was conducted at PAX East in Boston, Bleszinski reflected on some of the franchises that he helped create.

“Standing in this great booth at Nexon … it was funny because Bulletstorm‘s right next to it, the remaster. Then over to my left there’s like a Gears of War 4 photo booth. I’m sitting here going like, ‘This is f***ing weird.’ It feels good. I like making new IP,” he said.

“In the back of my head I’m thinking about all the nasty comments I’ve ever read in my entire career and I’m like, ‘Haha, call me next time you’re on a show floor and there’s three IPs that you were instrumental in creating.”

Finally, Bleszinski offered a tease that LawBreakers may not be the last franchise he creates.

“I’m not done yet,” he said.

  • Here's What Nintendo Switch Looks Like In A Zero-Gravity Environment

The Nintendo Switch has reached new heights.

Popular YouTuber iJustine brought the hybrid console with her aboard a zero-g flight recently. It’s pretty neat to see the Switch and its Joy-Cons floating around in the aircraft. Take a look:

She’s not in actual space, but instead aboard a modified Boeing 727 performing parabolic maneuvers. That basically means the plane flies up very quickly and then dives sharply, providing the feeling of weightlessness for around 30 seconds at each interval.

This video was filmed in partnership with the Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence movie Passengers, which launches today, March 14, for DVD and Blu-ray.

In other news about the Switch, the console has reportedly sold 1.5 million units worldwide, almost meeting Nintendo’s first-month expectations.

  • Assassin's Creed Movie Originally Had A Different Ending, See It Here

The ending of the video game movie Assassin’s Creed is not the only one that the filmmakers shot. It’s now been revealed that they also filmed another ending that was very different.

    SPOILERS FOR ASSASSIN’S CREED FOLLOW.

In the theatrical version of Assassin’s Creed, Michael Fassbender’s modern-day character, Callum Lynch, successfully escapes Abstergo alongside some of the others that were being kept in the facility. The idea is that they’ll go on to form their own group of assassins. But a different, more dramatic ending was originally conceived.

Collider reports that Lynch was originally going to be the only survivor of the breakout. In the sequels, which are planned, he would be alone. Director Justin Kurzel and editor Christopher Tellfsen explain in the clip above that test audiences did not exactly love this direction, so it was changed. As you can see in the clip, all of Lynch’s assassin colleagues are killed, including Michael Kenneth Williams’ character.

This alternate ending is presumably on the Assassin’s Creed home video release, which contains 90 minutes of bonus footage. The movie arrived in digital stores on March 10 and comes to Blu-ray/DVD on March 21. You can see a behind-the-scenes clip from an on-location shoot here.

Assassin’s Creed, which came out at the end of December, made more than $211.6 million at the worldwide box office. It performed much better internationally, taking in $157 million from foreign markets, compared to $54 million in the United States, according to Box Office Mojo.

A sequel is reportedly in the works, with Fassbender supposedly coming back. For more on Assassin’s Creed, check out GameSpot’s review of the movie.

The next Assassin’s Creed mainline game is reportedly set in Egypt and set to launch this year.

  • X-Men TV Show's Working Title Is Revealed

The working title of the X-Men spinoff TV show has been revealed. The show is now in production, and is being referred to as Gifted.

The news come via X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who tweeted an image of a script reading session, with the words: “Cast reading of Gifted.” Check it out below:

Cast reading of “Gifted” #Gifted pic.twitter.com/fQGgfoqZrl

    — Lauren Shuler Donner (@ShuDonner) March 11, 2017

EW have since confirmed that this is a working title, and could change between now and the show’s broadcast date, which is currently unknown.

Gifted is set to star Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6), Amy Acker (Person of Interest), Emma Dumont (Inherent Vice), and Percy Hynes White (Night at the Museum 3). It will be shot in Dallas, with long time X-Men director Bryan Singer helming the pilot episode. Donner also tweeted an image of the cast and crew arriving Dallas.

The show will focus upon mutant teenagers who are forced to go on the run after their powers emerge. It is being overseen by Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, who has previously stated that it will link direct with the X-Men movie universe.

It is known that Blink and Polaris are among the Marvel comic book characters who will appear in the series, as well as mutant-hunting robots Sentinels. “There are a certain amount of [familiar] characters that I can use and am using and then other characters I’m inventing,” Nix said in a recent interview. “But everything is invented with a nod toward the existing mythology.”

The new show isn’t Fox’s first attempt at an X-Men series. In 2015 it was reported that the network was developing a show called Hellfire, but this was later abandoned in place of this new series. Another X-Men related show–Legion–is currently screening on FX to much acclaim.

  • LawBreakers And Overwatch Can Co-Exist, Designer Says

LawBreakers And Overwatch Can Co-Exist, Designer Says

It’s not just Paladins and Battleborn that get compared to Blizzard’s hero shooter Overwatch. Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski’s new shooter, LawBreakers, is also in that category. Now, the gaming veteran has responded to those comparisons and talked about how he doesn’t expect LawBreakers to overtake Overwatch in terms of popularity.

“It’s humanity, dude! I’ve been dealing with this my entire career. The human mind loves to pattern-match. It’s a survival technique,” Bleszinski told PC Gamer. It’s like, ‘Oh, see that big bear over there? It ate my friend.’ And then you meet a new bear and you’re like, ‘Oh, my god! This bear is going to eat me because it ate my friend.’ People just like to put things into tidy little buckets, and to the point where they will stretch it so far.”

Bleszinski also shared a story of a specific comparison that a fan made between Overwatch and LawBreakers–but Bleszinski doesn’t buy it.

“Some kid was trolling my Instagram one day on a random photo I posted of my dog. If you’ve seen our characters Maverick and Tosska who have the Gatling guns. They’ve got their jetpacks, they can create zero-G pockets, and everything,” he said. “And he was like, ‘Oh, you guys have a girl with a minigun, so you’re cloning D.Va,’ and like, ‘You’re dealing with a tiny Korean girl in a big pink mech who can launch her mech and explode.’ So girl and a minigun means copying Overwatch? Right. OK. You’re reaching there, buddy.”

    No Caption Provided

Bleszinski went on to say that he’s happy to see Overwatch have so much success because it suggests that those types of games can be viable. He said if Overwatch is Coke, LawBreakers would be happy to be Pepsi or RC Cola, with the idea being a rising tide raises all ships.

“The second you say the number one game in a genre, that you’re going to be a killer of it, you’re admitting that game’s never going to be killed,” he said. “Remember all the ‘Halo killers’ that were coming out? Halo still hasn’t been killed. So again, it’s not a killer thing, it’s coexist. You know, I play Battlefield and Call of Duty. Back in the day I’d play Tekken and Street Fighter. There’s room for two or three games at the top of a given genre, and after that it’s fighting for the scraps.”

People will understand LawBreakers better when they get to try it, Bleszinski said. A closed beta for the game is coming up soon, and Bleszinski said he believes it offers a more complete picture of what LawBreakers is when compared to the alpha from 2016.

“I think now we’ve really kind of turned the corner to really starting to become the robust game that I originally wanted to make,” he said.

You can read the full interview here at PC Gamer.

LawBreakers was announced as a free-to-play game, but later adopted a paid business model. It is currently set for a PC-only at some point in the future, but Bleszinski has said that it could come to consoles if they found a good partner to handle the port.

Free-to-play and mobile gaming giant Nexon is publishing LawBreakers on PC.
