The Gears Of War Movie Brings On Avatar, Armageddon Writer

A movie based on Gears of War has been in the works in some capacity for a very long time. It’s now moving forward– again–as producer Universal Pictures has found a screenwriter for the project.

Shane Salerno, whose credits include Armageddon and Shaft, will write the script for the film, according to Variety. Salerno is also on the writing team for James Cameron’s four Avatar sequels.

In October 2016, Microsoft confirmed that the Gears of War movie was in the works with Universal Pictures. The rights have switched hands, it seems, as The Lord of the Rings studio New Line Cinema purchased the rights to make a movie based on the game originally back in 2007.

At the October event, Gears of War boss Rod Fergusson said the goal for the film is not necessarily to copy over the story from a Gears game. Instead, Fergusson said they want to make the best Gears movie possible rather than one which is the most faithful to the games.

As of yet, there is no word on who will direct the untitled Gears of War movie or when it will premiere. Universal Pictures is a juggernaut in the film industry, responsible for franchises like Jurassic World, The Fast and the Furious, Minions, and others.

As for the Gears of War game series, Gears of War 4 was recently updated with new maps and more. You can see a full rundown of everything it comes with here on the Xbox Wire.

  • Prey Day One Patch Detailed, Here's What It Does

Prey Day One Patch Detailed, Here's What It Does

Prey isn’t out until May 5, but it’s already got a new patch to download if you’ve got an early copy of the game.

The update fixes a bunch of bugs, which ranged from frame rate and crash issues to gameplay problems such as grenades exploding when you pick them up. With the 1.3 GB update installed, these issues should now be resolved.

In addition, you can now switch all dialogue lines to English, no matter which region your game is from. Co-creative director Raphael Colantonio also said on Twitter recently that the game’s audio, which some players thought was overbearing when under threat from enemies, has been remixed in the game’s final build.

Take a look at the full patch notes at the bottom of this article, via Gadgets360. Note that the list comes from the PlayStation 4 version of the game; the Xbox One and PC update may differ.

Prey’s developer, Arkane, said recently that it “doubled” its thoroughness in working on the title’s PC version after Dishonored 2–from the same company–suffered from a multitude of problems on the platform. Many players seem to be impressed by the game’s Opening Hour demo, though that is only available on consoles.

The PC version’s minimum and recommended specs were also revealed recently, and the game’s soundtrack is available now.

Prey is a reimagining of the 2006 original, and a replacement for the canceled sequel to that game that was in development at Human Head Studios.

The new title is seen by some as a spiritual successor to the 1994 game System Shock, while we also think it’s been inspired by BioShock.

In particular, the footage highlights the game’s upgraded lighting and water effects. We also get a look at the new character models for enemies and a glimpse of the mid-level bonus section.

The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy includes three old-school Crash games: Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. They were all originally made by Naughty Dog, though Activision’s Vicarious Visions is making the PlayStation 4 game.

There will also be time trials available for each game.

  • Nintendo Explains Why The New 2DS XL Exists

Nintendo recently announced another model in its long-running 3DS line: the New 2DS XL combines the screen size and clamshell form factor of the 3DS XL, the built-in NFC capability of the New Nintendo 3DS, and the budget price associated with the 2DS.

With so many different iterations of the console now available–not forgetting the standard 3DS or the New 3DS–some people have wondered why the New 2DS XL exists at all.

Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said the device is for consumers who want something “in between” the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

“The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer,” he told Time. “The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it’s a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, ‘Boy, I wish there was something in between.’” That’s why the company decided to make the 2DS XL, says Fils-Aime.

The executive had previously said the that the device “still packs the same power” of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

The Nintendo 2DS originally launched in 2013. Billed as an entry-level device for children, the system features two screens but no clamshell hinge and no 3D capability. It launched at $130, before Nintendo cut the price down to $80 / £80.

The New 2DS XL, meanwhile, will launch on July 28 in North America and Europe, priced at $149 / £133. Australian players will get it earlier on June 15, costing AU $200.

The announcement of this system came not long after Nintendo launched the Switch. The system debuted in March and has sold 2.74 million units by Nintendo’s latest count.

  • First Dark Tower Trailer Pits The Gunslinger Against The Man In Black

The first trailer for The Dark Tower is here. The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s classic series of novels hits theatres in August, and the new video promises a mix of lavish fantasy and spectacular gunslinging action. Check it out below:

The movie stars Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, while Matthew McConaughey plays demonic sorcerer The Man in Black. It also features Tom Taylor as young protagonist Jake, plus Katheryn Winnick (Vikings), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Dennis Haysbert (24), and Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road). A poster was released in March–check it out here.

The Dark Tower was originally set to hit theaters in February, but the release date was subsequently moved back to the summer. At the time, it was reported that the ambitious post-production process meant that hitting a February release would have added millions to the budget, so Sony decided to delay the film instead.

There has also been talk of a Dark Tower TV show. In September, it was reported that an adaptation of 1997’s Wizard and Glass, the fourth book in King’s epic series, was being planned.

However, more recently, producer Ron Howard stated that while a show was in development, it was far from definite. “[There’s] not a commitment on the television side,” he told TV Guide last month. “But creatively, it could work very well, hand in hand with what we’d like the movies to be.”

The Dark Tower hits theaters on August 4, 2017.

More Details On Next Game From Quantum Break Dev Revealed

Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind games like Alan Wake and Quantum Break, has reached a deal with 505 Games for its next project, which is codenamed P7. The global publishing deal covers P7’s physical and digital release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

    A scene from Quantum Break

As part of the deal, 505 Games is giving Remedy €7.75 million ($8.46 million) in funding for the development of the game. 505 will also market and publish the game, with the company getting a royalty rate of 45 percent on P7’s game sales.

The announcement also contains some details on P7, which until now has been shrouded in almost complete secrecy. It’s billed as a “cinematic third-person action game” set in a universe that Remedy created.

“Featuring an intriguing story and a game structure offering a long-lasting experience, P7 contains the deepest game mechanics yet in a Remedy game,” the press release said, adding that the game runs on Remedy’s internal Northlight engine.

We have a strong vision of what P7 should be,” Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said. “505 Games brings into this partnership experience and competences that help us successfully make this vision become reality together. Remedy is also investing in P7 and is deeply committed to creating an unique gaming experience that will keep the players engaged and playing for a long time to come. We are really excited to embark on this journey with 505 Games.”

We’ll report back with more details on P7 as they are announced.

In addition to P7, Remedy is making the sequel to CrossFire in partnership with Korean studio Smilegate.

It remains to be seen if Remedy will make a sequel to Quantum Break or Alan Wake. Quantum Break “sold really well,” Microsoft marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said last year. At the same time, he made it sound like there won’t be a sequel. “Just like every movie, not every game needs a sequel,” he said.

On the subject of Alan Wake, Remedy has said time and again that it has ideas for a new game in the series, though it looks like it’s not happening soon.

What are you hoping to see from Remedy’s next game? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Darksiders 3 Details And Screenshots Leaked

Darksiders 3 Details And Screenshots Leaked

Darksiders III has been leaked for PS4, Xbox One, and PC by retailer Amazon. The series’ creative director had indicated the franchise had a future after previous publisher THQ’s collapse, but no new game has so far been officially unveiled.

Now, thanks to a product page listed on Amazon, we have more details. The description states you’ll play as a mage named Fury and that you’ll need to “harness [her] magic to unleash her various forms–each granting her access to new weapons, moves, and traversal abilities.”

The listing goes on to state that you’ll be able to “explore an open-ended, living, free-form game world in which Fury moves back and forth between environments to uncover secrets while advancing the story.” Your objective, meanwhile, is to “defeat the Seven Deadly Sins and their servants who range from mystical creatures to degenerated beings.”

Take a look at the rest of Darksiders III’s description below, via Amazon.

“Return to an apocalyptic Earth in Darksiders III, a hack-n-slash action-adventure where players assume the role of Fury in her quest to hunt down and dispose of the Seven Deadly Sins. The most unpredictable and enigmatic of the Four Horsemen, Fury must succeed where many have failed–to bring balance to the forces that now ravage Earth. Darksiders III is the long-anticipated, third chapter in the critically-acclaimed Darksiders franchise.”

The game’s release date is down as December 31, 2018, though this could simply be a placeholder. The listing also revealed a price, $60, and some new images, which you can see in the gallery below.

Darksiders and Darksiders II launched in 2010 and 2012, respectively, while the original also got a current-gen re-release late last year. The franchise was caught up in THQ’s collapse in 2013, with Nordic Games acquiring the rights to the series. A third entry was in development at the original game’s studio, Vigil Games, which planned for all four of Darksiders’ Horsemen quartet to be playable. When no buyer was found for Vigil Games after THQ’s dissolution, it seemed the series would not be continued, until creative director Joe Madureira said otherwise in 2014: “[Darksiders] is not dead,” he wrote. “The new owner, Nordic, seems very committed to continuing the series.”

  • Half-Life 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead Writer Leaves Valve

Half-Life 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead Writer Leaves Valve

Chet Faliszek, writer of Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two, among other critically acclaimed Valve games, has left the studio after 12 years.

His departure was confirmed through a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, in which he said it was “nothing exciting or drama filled.”

“I worked there for 12 years, shipped a bunch of great games and some amazing hardware and wanted to change things up,” Faliszek said.

    No Caption Provided

During his time at Valve, Faliszek contributed to the writing of some of the studio’s most acclaimed titles. In addition to the Half-Life 2 DLC episodes mentioned above, he also had a hand in the writing of Portal and Portal 2, as well as Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2.

More recently, however, he has spearheaded developer relations for Vive, the VR headset Valve produced in partnership with HTC.

Faliszek has not provided any details on the next step in his career: “There’s no news on what’s next,” he said in his statement. “I will let you know when that happens.”

In February, Erik Wolpaw left Valve. Like Faliszek, Wolpaw’s credits include Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two, as well as Portal and the two Left 4 Dead games.

Last year, Marc Laidlaw, primary writer for Half-Life and Half-Life 2, also left the studio. At this point, Faliszek’s departure means the main writers on the Half-Life series are no longer at Valve.

  • DC's Aquaman Star Says It's Fun To “Set The Tone” For The Character

DC's Aquaman Star Says It's Fun To “Set The Tone” For The Character

Following this summer’s release of Wonder Woman, Aquaman will be the next DC superhero to feature in his own standalone movie. Jason Momoa plays the King of the Sea, and he has been speaking about his role in the film, which begins production this month.

    No Caption Provided

In an interview with GQ, Momoa explained that unlike Batman or Superman, this wasn’t a character that already had an established identity onscreen. “We’ve never really seen anything from this guy before, so it’s fun to have a level playing field,” Momoa said. “There aren’t like four Aquamans before me. I get to set the tone for it.”

Aquaman also stars Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s villainous half-brother Orm Marius, Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother, and Willem Dafoe as his adviser, Dr. Vulko. Last month it was announced the ’80s action icon Dolph Lundgren would play the role of King Nereus.

The film is directed by James Wan, who previously made Furious 7 and The Conjuring movies. Wan recently posted images of some spectacular potential locations for the film.

Both Momoa and Heard will feature in this year’s Justice League prior to Aquaman. In March, director Zack Snyder revealed some VFX test footage of Aquaman’s underwater lair–check it out here.

Aquaman hits theaters on October 5, 2018.
