  • DC Developing Second, Soviet-Themed Superman Movie

DC Developing Second, Soviet-Themed Superman Movie

DC’s superhero universe kicked off in 2014 with Man of Steel, but despite that film’s success, there has been no sign of a second standalone Superman movie. However, it has now been reported that the studio could be looking at making a big screen adaptation of the Red Son graphic novel.

    No Caption Provided

Superman: Red Son was a 2003 limited-run comic book that told an alternate story in which Superman was raised in the Soviet Union rather than the US. The news of a potential movie comes via a Twitter exchange between Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Red Son creator Mark Millar.

Vogt-Roberts mentioned he had pitched an adaptation to Red Son to DC, but that it “will sadly never get made.” However, Miller then responded with a more positive update:

Did you hear WB pitching directors Red Son? Two diff pals in last 2 months. This truly is Putin’s America.

    — Mark Millar (@mrmarkmillar) June 27, 2017

This was news to a suprised Vogt-Roberts, who then gave further details about the vision he had for the movie. “When I was pitching Red Son I wasn’t even convinced you needed [Ben] Affleck and [Henry] Cavill. Public understanding of the medium has evolved,” he said. “I think we can sustain a ‘main shared universe’ AND offshoots with alternate takes on characters and different actors existing simultaneously.”

Miller has subsequently spoken to Den of Geek on the subject. He explained that the studio was using Red Son as one of several potential storylines to attract quality filmmakers to the DC universe, and weren’t specifically focused on that one title.

“Is this something they’re genuinely planning? I have no idea,” he said. “I’ve got pals at Warner Bros. but never discussed it with them. I think they’re just going through their back catalogue of big books and hoping to lure in good directors as opposed to any particular interest in developing Red Son.”

After Man of Steel‘s huge success, the plan was to follow it up with a direct sequel. However, DC’s desire to accelerate its cinematic universe led to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice instead, which introduced both Batman and Wonder Woman. Cavill will reprise his role as Superman in Justice League, which arrives in November.

  • Kevin Bacon Is Back For The Tremors TV Show Pilot

The 1990 monster movie Tremors starring Kevin Bacon is coming back as a TV show of sorts, it seems. Deadline reports that TV network Syfy has ordered a pilot for a reboot, with Bacon set to appear again as his character, Valentine “Val” McKee, who is now older and struggles with alcohol and more.

Here’s how Deadline sums up the story for the reboot: “The killer Graboid worms that nearly destroyed Perfection, NV, 25 years ago are back, and the town’s only hope for survival is Valentine McKee (Bacon), who beat them once. But to do it again he’ll have to overcome age, alcohol, and a delusional hero complex.”

The new Tremors is written by Andrew Miller (The Secret Circle, Nothing).

“This is the only character I’ve played that I’ve ever thought about revisiting,” Bacon told Deadline. “I just got to thinking, ‘Where would this guy end up after 25 years?’. Andrew Miller has a fantastic take on it, and we hope to create a show that will be fun and scary for fans of the movie and folks that have yet to discover it. Let’s kick some Graboid ass!”

Tremors only made $16.6 million in the US, but it became a cult hit. There were multiple straight-to-DVD sequels, and a TV show, Tremors: The Series, ran for one season on in 2003 on Syfy, which at the time was known as Sci-Fi.

Bear in mind that Syfy has only ordered a pilot for a new Tremors show, so there is no guarantee the show will actually ever come to fruition. Are you hoping the show gets made? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 Dev Admits Mistakes, Will Scrap Open World With Next Game

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 developer CI Games has admitted it made mistakes during the open-world title’s development, saying it “spent too much effort trying to catch up with other AAA titles.”

In a statement, CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski said the company “made the wrong math considering the size of our team and the originally given timeframe.” The challenges were apparent at the game’s launch, which was blighted by load times of nearly five minutes on PS4 and the last-minute delay of the game’s multiplayer mode. The title was also delayed multiple times.

“We’ve learned a lot as a team over the course of development for Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, much of which I believe has shaped the talented individuals within CI Games and the entire studio for the better,” Tyminski said. “When we began development of SGW3, we decided on such a relatively large scale of the game with its open world that now we realize it was just too ambitious versus what we could have been able to deliver in any reasonable amount of time.”

The learning experience has already impacted the direction of the studio’s next game, says Tyminski, with the nascent project ditching Ghost Warrior 3’s open-world design: “All of that was a huge lesson for us and we’re now moving forward without any tag attached to our next project. We’re planning to make a great tactical shooter where we can focus on exciting gameplay, some key mechanics, and missions that have depth without all of the trappings of a large open-world setting. We want to make this game even more tactical than SGW3, and I believe the last three years have created a wonderful foundation that we can build upon for our next game.”

CI Games says it will continue to support Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 with updates “through 2017.”

In our Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 review, critic Richard Wakeling said the title “feels like a B-tier, budget-priced game,” and he awarded it a 5/10.

“Even the predictable, profanity-laden story is reminiscent of the type of gritty B-movies Steven Seagal is known for,” he wrote. “There’s certainly merit to its accomplished sniping mechanics, especially when missions hone in on the planning and precise execution that makes playing as a sharpshooter so thrilling. Yet it falters whenever it veers away from its strengths, and the plethora of nagging glitches and technical problems are a persistent nuisance that make Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 difficult to recommend.”

  • How To Preorder A SNES Classic Right Now

Nintendo announced the SNES Classic today. A miniature version of the classic Nintendo console, the $80 system that comes with 21 games and two controllers launches in the US in September. Given that last year’s NES Classic sold out basically instantly everywhere it was sold, fans might be wondering how they can secure the SNES Classic right away.

US retailers are not yet widely accepting pre-orders, but in Australia, you can secure a pre-order right now through JB Hi Fi and EB Games. The console sells for $120 in Australia and it looks a little different than the North American edition.

UK retailer Game announced today that pre-orders were available for the SNES Classic, but at press time it appears that the allocated units have been sold through.

In the US, Amazon has a page up for the SNES Classic, but you cannot actually pre-order the system there as of yet. We will update this post as more retailers open pre-orders for the SNES Classic. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

The Super NES Classic Edition features a total of 21 games, including some huge names–EarthBound, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Mario World are among those included. But most notable of all is the inclusion of a game–Star Fox 2–that was famously never released. Here’s the complete list:

    • Contra III: The Alien Wars
    • Donkey Kong Country
    • EarthBound
    • Final Fantasy III
    • F-Zero
    • Kirby Super Star
    • Kirby’s Dream Course
    • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    • Mega Man X
    • Secret of Mana
    • Star Fox
    • Star Fox 2
    • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
    • Super Castlevania IV
    • Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
    • Super Mario Kart
    • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
    • Super Mario World
    • Super Metroid
    • Super Punch-Out
    • Yoshi’s Island

As with the NES Classic Edition, the SNES Classic features HDMI output and resembles the look of the system it’s based on but in a smaller form factor. But unlike that system, it comes with two controllers in the box.

On the subject of supply, while Nintendo isn’t sharing specific numbers, it did say it will deliver “significantly more” units than it did with the NES Classic Edition. That said, it only plans to ship the system between September and the end of 2017.

In Japan, Nintendo is selling the console as the Super Famicom Classic–and its game lineup is not the same as in the rest of the world.

  • After Criticism, Sega Says It's “Working On” Its Classic Game Re-Releases

Last week Sega launched its Sega Forever service, which brings back classic games from its Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Gear, Saturn, and Dreamcast consoles and repurposes them as free-to-play mobile titles. The launch lineup incorporated Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II–with new titles to be added every fortnight–but initial fan reception has been mixed. Some players have complained of dropped frames, poor audio mixing, and fiddly controls.

Now, Sega has defended the service’s launch, at the same time as reassuring fans that it is working on improving the quality of both the lineup and each game’s port.

“We’ve got lots of things planned as we go through, and we’re going to keep on working on that quality,” Sega Networks’ chief marketing officer, Mike Evans, told Eurogamer. “For the vast majority of our fans it’s solid, but the specialist guys who are looking for the absolute epitome of quality, we’re going to keep improving for those guys.”

“The launch itself has been really positive–if you look at the vast majority of feedback it’s been strong, if you look at ratings on the App Store from consumers there’s definitely some very good sentiment as well. Is there room for improvement like anything? Yeah there is.”

Evans went on to say that Sega has “some really good updates coming out soon which will address some of the challenges of the d-pad, some of the [graphics] shading as well that we’re looking at how to improve.”

Currently, Sega Forever is only available on Android and iOS, but Evans hinted that an expansion to other platforms may come further down the line. He stated that developing these re-releases in the Unity game engine “opens up other commercial opportunities for us with Apple TVs, desktops and the Switch as well.”

Lastly, regarding criticism of the games lineup at launch, Evans said the company started with Genesis games as it’s the “most successful platform” and “a good place to introduce the mainstream audience,” but that more platform favorites would be coming soon. “I’m actively looking at Segagaga as a title which will be a great thing, there are other titles I’d love to see, like Panzer Dragoon,” he said. “They’re the things that take a bit more time, but what we’ve got to do is get the quality right as well, and that’s important.”

  • Here's How Many Post-Credit Scenes Spider-Man: Homecoming Has

Here's How Many Post-Credit Scenes Spider-Man: Homecoming Has

Post and mid-credit scenes are an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, often hinting at characters and plots to come in the interconnected world. It has now been reported that the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming will have two post-credit scenes.

    No Caption Provided

The news comes via Polygon, based on reports from early screenings of the movie, which hits theaters next month. It is unknown what the scenes contain, and as the site points, the matter is complicated by the fact that Homecoming is a co-production between Marvel and Sony.

Although the film is part of the MCU, Sony owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and associated characters. Sony are already planning their own series of Spidey spinoffs, starting with Venom in 2018. So it is unknown if the post-credit Homecoming scenes tease these films, or if they will relate to upcoming films within the MCU. Given that Spider-Man will appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, it’s possible one might link to that epic Marvel team-up.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Robery Downey Jr, Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, and Donald Glover. Earlier this month, Holland confirmed that it would be the first part of a trilogy. “There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker and Spider-Man, especially, to grow in the next two movies,” he said. “He’s definitely not the finished article by the end of Homecoming and I really look forward to exploring the different ways he can grow up. It’s going to be an exciting couple of movies.”

The movie hits theaters on July 7. Check out the latest trailer here.

During E3 2017, publisher Rockstar announced a new update for GTA V’s multiplayer portion, GTA Online. The update, titled Gunrunning, lets you become a “prolific arms dealer” and extend your web of corruption and infamy further.

More recently, GTA V and Rockstar have been in the news after the publisher’s parent company, Take-Two, attempted to block distribution of a modding tool called OpenIV. Rockstar argued that “OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody.” After fan uproar, Rockstar later released a statement saying that Take-Two “has agreed that it generally will not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstar’s PC games that are single-player, non-commercial, and respect the intellectual property (IP) rights of third parties.”

  • New Dark Tower Trailer Teases That “Death Always Wins”

A new video for the Stephen King movie The Dark Tower has arrived, showing off the film’s stars and King himself discussing the rad-looking action movie coming out soon.

Idris Elba plays the Gunslinger, and he is mostly the focus of this new behind-the-scenes video, which sets up his character and explains his motivations. We also see Matthew McConaughey talking about how his character, The Man In Black, is trying to take down the Gunslinger. He says at one point, “You can’t stop what’s coming. Death always wins.” As for King, he briefly discusses why he’s proud of the movie and its actors. Take a look:

The Dark Tower also stars Tom Taylor as young protagonist Jake, plus Katheryn Winnick (Vikings), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Dennis Haysbert (24), and Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road). It’s directed by Nikolaj Arcel.

The Dark Tower was originally set to hit theaters in February, but the release date was subsequently moved to the summer. At the time, it was reported that the ambitious post-production process meant that hitting a February release would have added millions to the budget, so Sony decided to delay the film instead.

There has also been talk of a Dark Tower TV show. In September, it was reported that an adaptation of 1997’s Wizard and Glass, the fourth book in King’s series, is being planned.

Producer Ron Howard, who was recently named the new director for the Han Solo Star Wars movie, stated that while a show is in development, it was far from definite. “[There’s] not a commitment on the television side,” he told TV Guide in April. “But creatively, it could work very well, hand in hand with what we’d like the movies to be.”

The Dark Tower hits theaters on August 4, 2017.

  • Xbox Exec Teases “Big Titles” That Haven't Been Announced Yet

Xbox Exec Teases “Big Titles” That Haven't Been Announced Yet

Microsoft showed a lot of games during its E3 2017 briefing. The company made a point to say it had 42 games during its briefing, a good chunk of them being console launch exclusives for Xbox One. But more “big” games are coming to Xbox One, executive Aaron Greenberg has teased.

“It’s a fine balance of how much do you show early,” Greenberg told GameReactor. “I can tell you that there are a lot of other projects happening for Xbox, with a lot of big titles that we’re not talking about today. We always balance that. How much do we show farther into the future? The fact was, we showed 42 games [at the E3 briefing] … with a really great variety of titles.”

    No Caption Provided

This response came after the interviewer asked about Scalebound, a title that was apparently announced relatively early in its development cycle and was ultimately canceled. Greenberg said, even with the right ingredients–in this case a respected studio and a good idea–the “creative process” means that sometimes projects don’t end up working out.

As for when Microsoft may announce new projects, one possibility is Gamescom in August. Greenberg confirmed Microsoft will have news to share at the event in Germany this year, but the reveals might not be on the same level as E3. “We’ve got a lot going on right now–and it’s exciting,” Greenberg said.

Also in the interview, Greenberg said the teams behind Halo and Gears of War are working in secrecy on their next big games. Halo 6 is believed to be the next game in the core FPS series, while Microsoft is of course making another Gears of War game–and it might not be a shooter.

  • Netflix Cancels Another Show

Netflix has canceled another show. According to Deadline, the streaming network announced this week that it won’t renew the comedy Girlboss for a second season, meaning it’s canceled.

The show, which was written and produced by Pitch Perfect writer Kay Cannon, had just one season. The 13-episode season premiered on April 21. It was produced by Charlize Theron’s production company, Denver & Delilah.

Girlboss starred Britt Robertson as a character, Sophia Amoruso, who refused to grow up, starting her own vintage clothing company. The story is inspired by the book by Amoruso, who founded the real-world fashion brand Nasty Gal, which became a multi-million dollar venture.

The co-stars in Girlboss include Ellie Reed (Annie), Alphonso McAuley (Dax), Johnny Simmons (Shane), and Dean Norris (Jay).

Last month, Netflix founder Reed Hastings said the company should invest in riskier shows, which would in turn lead to more cancellations if they don’t work out. Trying new things is incredibly important, Hastings said.

“Our hit ratio is way too high right now,” Hastings said. “We’ve canceled very few shows. I’m always pushing the content team, we have to take more risk, you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”

Some of the shows that Netflix has canceled include The Get Down, Marco Polo, Bloodline, and Sense8.
