  • Bioware's Anthem Now Has A Corn Maze Tie-In

If there was a competition for strangest video game marketing material, Anthem would win it. Developer Bioware announced today that there’s now an Anthem-themed corn maze.

People can now go wander through a maze shaped like one of the mechs from Anthem, thanks to a partnership between Bioware and Edmonton Corn Maze. It’s in Edmonton, Canada, and features a massive Bioware logo carved into the corn field, as well. Check it out:

At least Bioware seems to be aware of the inherent ridiculousness of making a video game-themed corn maze. “In a world saturated with banners and billboards, getting the message out about our new game, Anthem, is more important than ever,” the video’s description states. “Rather than taking a conventional approach, we’ve chosen a field as our medium. What better way to celebrate the growth of a new game than through corn, which also grows?”

Oh, and if the corn maze isn’t silly enough, Bioware also filled its announcement post with a bunch of maze and corn puns. The company’s not saying, however, if a corn field will somehow make its way into the game. “We cannot confirm nor deny whether Anthem will feature corn in any shape or form,” the post reads.

Anthem is a third-person cooperative action game set in a science-fiction universe. Bioware is positioning it as a “science fantasy” game like Star Wars. It’s scheduled for release sometime in 2018 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

  • Square Enix Switch/PS4/PC RPG Lost Sphear's New Screenshots Show Mechs

Square Enix Switch/PS4/PC RPG Lost Sphear's New Screenshots Show Mechs

Square Enix has shared some new screenshots of Lost Sphear, the sophomore effort from I Am Setsuna developer Tokyo RPG Factory. The new images show off more of the title’s world and battle system, as well as give fans a glimpse at a potentially new element of the game.

Like the studio’s previous title, Lost Sphear is a traditional RPG heavily inspired by classic 16-bit adventures like Chrono Trigger. The new batch of screenshots provide a closer look at many of its classical elements, but what’s most notable about the images is that they seemingly reveal a new mechanic that Square Enix hadn’t previously detailed: mech suits. Some of the screenshots show protagonist Kanata and his party donning what appears to be robotic combat armor, which weren’t shown off when the game was unveiled last month. You can see them in the screenshots below.

Lost Sphear is a melancholy adventure set in a world created by memories. When memories fade, so too does a part of the world, leaving a white mist in its wake. After Kanata witnesses this phenomenon firsthand when his mother disappears, he sets out with his friends Lumina and Locke on a quest to prevent his village from vanishing and restore the world. Along the way, the trio team up with an enigmatic ally named Van, who uses magic to control a mysterious weapon called Bits.

As in I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear employs an active-time battle system, which has been enhanced to give players a “much greater sense of freedom” in combat. While Square Enix hasn’t shared any details on the mech suits the party can wear, the above images make it clear they’ll play a vital role both in and out of battle; in one of the screenshots, the party can be seen using the suits to destroy a giant boulder that’s blocking their path.

Lost Sphear is releasing for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC in early 2018. Square Enix is offering a limited quantity of physical copies for the PS4 and Switch versions through its online store. The physical copy retails for $50 and includes two additional music tracks.

  • PSN Maintenance Coming Up, Here's Exactly When And For How Long

PlayStation Network will undergo “routine maintenance” later this week, Sony has announced. Some services will be affected while the work is carried out on Tuesday, July 25, between 8 AM and 9 AM in your local timezone.

On the PSN service status page, Sony stated that PS4, PS3, and PS Vita platforms will all be affected by the maintenance. You’ll still be able to sign in, play games, and use “most applications,” the company said, but “you will not be able to access PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and Account Management.”

Sony apologized for any inconvenience before explaining: “We strive to ensure that PlayStation Network services are available at all times, but occasionally we must take PlayStation Network offline to perform essential maintenance and implement feature enhancements. We are working hard to reduce the duration of each maintenance.”

Sony recently announced that the PS4’s 5.0 system update is on its way soon. Ahead of its release, you can sign up for the update’s beta test right now. The trial will then begin in “early August.”

There’s no word yet on what the 5.0 patch will include. The last big PS4 update, 4.50, added Boost mode for PS4 Pro owners and external hard drive support, among other things. Subsequent updates haven’t done much.

  • New Rick And Morty Trailer Teases Season 3 Mad Max Tribute

I want to watch an entire documentary on the making of a Rick and Morty episode. Until that happens, there’s a tounge-in-cheek teaser trailer for season 3 of the show embedded above to help fill that longing.

Showing off scenes from the second episode of Rick and Morty titled Wasteland, both the episode and the trailer’s behind-the-scenes style clearly riff on last year’s blockbuster success, Mad Max: Fury Road. But you don’t need to read my description of it; just watch the video.

Season 3 debuted a little earlier than fans expected this year, kicking off with an April Fool’s “gag” wherein the entire first episode was posted online. That was followed by the reveal of the actual premiere date: the show will officially come back to Cartoon Network on July 30. However, whether Rick will be successful in his journey to get Szechuan Sauce back in McDonalds restaurants remains to be seen.

  • Star Trek: Discovery Trailer Shows More Of The Crew And Klingons

Star Trek: Discovery Trailer Shows More Of The Crew And Klingons

Trekkies and newcomers to the series just got a more in-depth look at the latest entry into the Star Trek series. Star Trek: Discovery is coming on CBS All Access in September, and a substantial trailer was released at a Comic-Con showing more of the crew and the Klingons. You check out the trailer above.

Star Trek: Discovery is set before the original ’60s series. It focuses on the story of lieutenant Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) and what appears to be a series of fiery battles between Starfleet and the Klingons. Last year, Showrunner Bryan Fuller spoke at the Television Critics Association conference and said he and his team were keen to break with Star Trek tradition.

“The story that’s fascinating for me now is not from the captain’s perspective,” he said, via Polygon. “We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view and we wanted to do something different.” Fuller also said he was committed to diversity in casting, and choosing a female lead character was an important move for him.

“Star Trek started with a wonderful diversity in its cast,” he said. “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations, as Spock would say. We are absolutely continuing that tradition. We’ll probably have some more aliens than usual in our cast, too.” The show also stars Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, Chris Obi, and Doug Jones.

Star Trek: Discovery’s release date had been delayed in the past, but the show will now premiere September 24 on CBS in the US and CraveTV in Canada. Outside of the two countries, Netflix will stream the show. For more news and features from Comic-Con 2017 check out GameSpot’s full coverage.

  • Captain Marvel Movie's Era And Enemies Revealed At Comic-Con 2017

We still haven’t seen much of Captain Marvel, but today Marvel gave us a few more details about the movie. At San Diego Comic-Con, the company announced that it’ll take place in the 1990s, and Captain Marvel will be facing off against a classic foe: Skrulls.

We now know that Captain Marvel will act as a prequel to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking place during the ’90s. We don’t have any other information on the setting, but we’re guessing that there’ll be a lot of throwback references for fans who grew up during the decade.

    — Adam @ SDCC 2017 (@adamhlavac) July 23, 2017

Perhaps the biggest reveal, though, was that she’ll be battling the Skrulls, a species of extraterrestrial shapeshifters. The Skrulls were revealed in a couple pieces of concept art that Marvel showed at its panel today; you can see it above, courtesy of Adam Hlavac. Interestingly, Skrulls have traditionally shown up in Fantastic Four comics, and so their movie rights are co-owned by Fox and Marvel.

In addition, Marvel announced that Samuel L. Jackson will once again be playing Nick Fury. And, since it’s set in the 1990s, Fury has both eyes.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) and is set for release on March 8, 2019.

  • Black Panther Receives A Cool New Poster At Comic-Con 2017

Black Panther Receives A Cool New Poster At Comic-Con 2017

Black Panther was the final event at Marvel’s big San Diego Comic-Con panel tonight, and to cap it off the company released a new poster for the film. Although we don’t yet get to see any of the footage Marvel showed at the panel, the poster is still pretty cool.

It shows the superhero standing atop a massive stone panther. In the background, a variety of ships fly toward a city that appears a little worse for wear. Fires burn among the skyscrapers, while a smoke cloud hangs over the whole metropolis. Check it out:

Marvel gave Hall H attendees a great show, revealing a scene and a trailer. According to attendees–and a handheld video shared by Fandango–the reveals were exciting enough to spark a standing ovation.

Although there’s no new footage for the public to see, you can watch Black Panther‘s first trailer here. The movie is directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed). Chadwick Boseman plays the superhero, and its cast includes Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. It hits theaters on February 16, 2018.

  • Marvel's Next Ant-Man Movie Casts Former Catwoman As The Original Wasp

Marvel’s jam-packed Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con had plenty of exciting announcements, including new trailers for both Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, but there was also some significant casting news for another upcoming Marvel film, Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Michelle Pfeiffer, who memorably played Catwoman in the ’90s film Batman Returns, is shifting to another comic cinematic universe, and has been cast at Janet van Dyne in the upcoming Ant-Man sequel. In the comics world, Janet van Dyne was the original Wasp, a founding member of the Avengers and wife to Hank Pym (who was the original Ant-Man).

The Wasp suit as shown in the first Ant-Man film.

In the 2015 Ant-Man film, Hank Pym was played by Michael Douglas, and was shown as the original Ant-Man before Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was “chosen” to wear the shrinking suit. Janet appeared as the Wasp in the film (although with her mask on) through a flashback that showed her disappearing into the subatomic quantum realm after a failed mission. At the end of the film, Hank’s daughter, Hope van Dyne (played by Evangeline Lilly), was given the original Wasp suit, and it’s clearly hinted that she would take on the mantle of the superhero in the film’s sequel.

Pfeiffer wasn’t the only new cast member revealed for Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Matrix’s Laurence Fishburne was announced to play the role of Bill Foster, who in the comics was known as Black Goliath/Giant Man. Hannah John-Kamen was also confirmed as character named Ghost, while Fresh Off The Boat’s Randall Park will play Agent Jimmy Woo.

  • SNES Classic Edition Pre-orders Available Right Now In The US [UPDATE: SOLD OUT]

SNES Classic Edition Pre-orders Available Right Now In The US [UPDATE: SOLD OUT]

Update: Sure enough, the SNES Classic has sold out. We’ll report back as other retailers bring their SNES Classic pre-orders online, though keep in mind we don’t yet know how soon those will be coming.

Original Story: The Super NES Classic Edition is available for pre-order right now in the United States. You can place an order through Walmart’s website, but hurry–it’s possible they will sell out quickly.

The micro console was announced In June and a round of pre-orders became available in Europe soon after. However, there has been frustratingly little word on how or when those in the US would be able to pre-order. If you miss out on this Walmart availability–or simply prefer to shop elsewhere–it seems likely that other retailers will offer pre-orders prior to the system’s release on September 29.

    No Caption Provided

For $80, the SNES Classic includes a total of 21 of the Super Nintendo’s best games. One of those games is Star Fox 2, a title that was never officially released to the public. You can see all of the SNES Classic games here.

Last year’s NES Classic Edition was notoriously difficult to come by. It sold out well in advance of its launch, and additional shipments were gone virtually the second they became available. This resulted in prices skyrocketing on the secondhand market. Nintendo ultimately discontinued the system before demand could be satisfied–a situation that many fear will also be the case with the SNES Classic. Nintendo has already said its current plans are only to offer the system until the end of 2017, but it claims it will offer “significantly more” units this time around.
