  • Destiny 2 Players Are Very Angry At How Shaders Work

Among the many smaller changes in Destiny 2 is one concerning shaders, the items used to re-color your gear. Many players have responded negatively to the way they function as consumables, and now Bungie has responded with an explanation of why the adjustment was made.

Whereas Destiny 1 allowed you to freely switch between any shader you had obtained (which was then applied to all of your armor), those in Destiny 2 are single-use consumables, meaning you’ll need to repeatedly acquire a single shader if you want to change the look of a bunch of items. Of course, there are other changes at play here, too, like the fact that randomized rolls on items are gone, meaning you won’t be dismantling them as frequently. But because shaders can be obtained by spending real-world money, players have complained that this change was motivated purely by greed. As a result, players are quite angry, as this popular thread on Reddit demonstrates.

No doubt in response to the frustration regarding the subject, Destiny 2 director Luke Smith took to Twitter today to provide some insight into why shaders now work the way they do. “Shaders are earned through gameplay: leveling, chests, engrams, vendors,” he explained over a series of tweets. “We expect you’ll be flush w[ith] shaders as you continue to play. When you reach Level 20, shaders will drop more often: vendor rewards, destination play, and endgame activities.

“Shaders are now an ongoing reward for playing. Customization will inspire gameplay. Each planet has unique armor and shader rewards. With D2, we want statements like, ‘I want to run the Raid, Trials, or go back to Titan to get more of its Shader’ to be possible.”

The explanation is unlikely to convince angry players, though it remains to be seen if this is one of those changes that becomes accepted as people spend more time with the game. For more, check our Destiny 2 review diary and roundup of everything you need to know about Destiny 2.

  • Okami HD Coming To PS4, Xbox One, PC With 4K Support

Capcom has announced Okami HD will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 13 in Japan. The announcement was made in the latest issue of Famitsu, as reported by Gematsu.

The re-release will be available physically on PlayStation 4 in Japan and all versions of the game will support 4K, as well as include the loading screen mini-games that were absent from the Wii and PlayStation 3 versions. As of yet, it has not been officially announced when, or even if, Okami HD will be available for current generation consoles and PC outside of Japan.

The announcement follows rumors that Okami HD would be available for two consoles this year. These rumors were based in part on sources at European retailers, which had the game on their internal physical release calendars for December 12. This suggests that Okami HD will launch in western territories around the same time, though this is not officially confirmed yet. GameSpot has contacted Capcom for a statement.

Okami was originally released for PS2 in 2006, developed by Clover Studio, a now-defunct subsidiary of Capcom that also produced the Viewtiful Joe series. Okami garnered universal acclaim thanks to its beautiful visuals, which were inspired by traditional Japanese sumi-e paintings, and its Zelda-like gameplay. A Wii version was released in 2008 and added motion controls for the game’s Celestial Brush system, while an HD port for PS3 arrived in 2012. The game’s only sequel, Okamiden, released for DS in 2011.

Capcom has said that it will be releasing more HD remasters as “one of [its] key business activities” going forward. The publisher recently announced that an HD port of the formerly 3DS-exclusive Resident Evil title, Resident Evil: Revelations, is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on August 29, with a Switch release following in “late 2017” (the latter of which will be bundled with Resident Evil: Revelations 2). An enhanced version of the fantasy action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is also slated to arrive for PS4 and Xbox One on October 3.

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Is “Not Thinking” About Taking Over Episode 9

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Is “Not Thinking” About Taking Over Episode 9

Last week it was announced that Star Wars Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow had left the movie, leading to much speculation about who would replace him. It was reported that Rian Johnson, who is currently finishing this December’s The Last Jedi, could step in to take over the next part of the Star Wars saga. However, Johnson has now commented on this and revealed that he currently has no plans to make another movie in the blockbuster franchise.

Johnson was asked about the rumors that he might take over from Trevorrow while at a Star Wars press event in Japan. “It was never the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it,” he said, via Star Wars Underworld. “I was entirely focused on Episode VIII and having this experience. Now I’m just thinking about putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it.

“So no, I’m not really thinking about that right now. Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again, and to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

    No Caption Provided

Trevorrow’s departure from Episode IX was announced by Lucasfilm last week. A statement read: “Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

However, a subsequent report by Vulture suggested however that Lucasfilm boss Kathleeen Kennedy fired Trevorrow because he was “difficult,” and that the terrible reviews for his last film, The Book of Henry, hadn’t helped.

The site’s sources stated that: “He had an egotistical point of view–and he was always asserting that. When the reviews for Book of Henry came out, there was immediately conjecture that Kathy was going to dump him because they weren’t thrilled with working with him anyway. He’s a difficult guy. He’s really, really, really confident. Let’s call it that.”

Episode IX is slated for release on May 24, 2019, which gives Lucasfilm quite a bit more time to deal with the situation than it had with the Han Solo movie. In that case, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (of The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street fame) were dropped earlier this year, just 11 months before the film’s scheduled debut. Soon after, Ron Howard was brought aboard to replace them, with reports suggesting that Miller and Lord had clashed with Lucasfilm.

  • Nintendo SNES Mini And NES Mini Will Be Sold In Europe In 2018

Nintendo has announced it will extend availability of the SNES Classic Mini into 2018 for those in Europe. Additionally, it will also make the NES Classic Mini available again “next summer” in the region.

The announcement was made on Twitter, and comes at a time when demand for the SNES Classic Mini is high, while supply remains low–at least for pre-orders. Those currently looking to purchase one are having extreme difficulty finding one in stores and online. Many retailers that do have the hardware available are offering them in bundles with inflated prices.

Nintendo’s confirmation that it will be available next year in Europe should assuage fears that people may not be able to get it, amidst the hype and constrained stock. It could also calm demand somewhat to make acquiring one more manageable.

We’ll also bring the Nintendo Classic Mini: NES back to Europe next summer. More info will be shared in the future ► https://t.co/YUY2dxzI50 pic.twitter.com/RcIxPKlil7

    — Nintendo of Europe (@NintendoEurope) September 12, 2017

On September 10, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime addressed concerns that stock of the SNES Classic Mini would continue to remain limited and, as such, price gouging would be an ongoing problem. According to Fils-Aime, Nintendo has “dramatically increased” production for SNES Classic stock.

“I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites . . . You shouldn’t [have to] pay more than $79.99,” he said.

The SNES Classic goes on sale on September 29. There are 21 games in the package, including Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy III, and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, as well as the previous unreleased Star Fox 2. You can see a roundup of all the games here.

The NES Classic Mini was available in Europe in late 2016 for a very short period of time. Stock was very limited and many found themselves unable to purchase one before they were seemingly discontinued. News that Nintendo plans to make them available in Europe once again will no doubt be welcome.

  • Destiny 2: When Xur Returns, Raid Start Time, And More Confirmed

Destiny 2: When Xur Returns, Raid Start Time, And More Confirmed

Destiny 2‘s launch this week is just the beginning. As you’d expect, there is a lot more content and activities coming, including quite a bit of fresh material this month. As part of Bungie’s newest blog post, the studio shared a schedule of Destiny 2’s first-month activities, which include the Inverted Spire Nightfall Strike on September 12, followed by the mysterious Leviathan raid on September 13.

Later in that week, on September 15, Destiny 2’s Trials of the Nine event kicks off. On that same day, the Exotic dealer Xur arrives to sell his wares–unfortunately for those expecting to see him today, there’s another week to wait. You can see everything coming to Destiny 2 during its first month in the image below.

Looking ahead to October, Bungie will add even more new activities, one of which is the Iron Banner multiplayer event. Not only that, but it sounds like a change is coming to the Leviathan raid, as Bungie says you’ll have “new ways to have your prestige tested.”

Destiny 2 is out now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a PC edition to follow in October. In other news, Bungie said today that “millions” of people have already played Destiny 2, just days after launch, while the studio has also outlined all of the current known issues and problems that have been resolved.

  • Blade Runner 2049's First Clip Is A Mysterious Hunt For Clues

Following last week’s short film promo for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049, a first clip has been released. It shows LA detective K (Ryan Gosling) searching for clues in what seems to be a post-apocalyptic wilderness outside Los Angeles. Fans of the The Walking Dead will also recognise Lennie James, who plays Morgan in HBO’s hit zombie show. Check the clip out below:

Blade Runner 2049 also stars Harrison Ford, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, and Robin Wright. It’s directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario), and produced by Ridley Scott, who also directed the classic original movie.

In a recent interview with Slashfilm, Villeneuve revealed one of the main reasons that he decided to take on the sequel. “I said to myself, ‘They will do it. No matter what we think, the studio will move forward and will make it.’ I don’t know if I’ll succeed, but I know I will give it all my love and all my skills,” he said. “I will work so hard. I didn’t want it to fall into the hands of someone that wouldn’t. I was afraid to see a sequel to Blade Runner, but I said, at least if I do it, I will have some control over it. At least then I can blame only myself.”

Villeneuve went on to explain that he hoped to match the original film in terms of tone and pacing. “There was a melancholia in the first movie, a nostalgic feeling of loneliness and existential doubt,” he said. “A kind of inner paranoia about yourself that I wanted to keep alive in the second movie. I wanted to keep the film noir aesthetic alive, as well. That was very important.

“A certain kind of pacing, too. It’s still made in the rhythms of [today’s] movies, but I tried my best to keep that tension alive. Ridley told me that it touched him because I was able to extend that atmospheric quality that the first movie had.”

Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters on October 6, 2017.

  • Destiny 2 PSA: Don't Wait To Decrypt Your Engrams (Also Don't Bother Equipping Your Best Gear)

Players continue to come to grips with the changes in Destiny 2, many of which are for the better. Some of these involve obtaining new gear and decrypting Engrams, a process which has been radically simplified.

As we’ve pointed out previously, you’ll notice that Engrams drop less frequently than in the original Destiny. That means you can more frequently acquire new gear and equip it without first taking a trip to the Farm, which is certainly nice. But when you do obtain an Engram, there are two key bits of information to be aware of.

The first is that there’s no sense in holding onto Engrams, as their Power level is determined when they’re dropped. In other words, grinding your level or Power up before decrypting an Engram won’t have an effect on it. In fact, by waiting, you may end up finding that it’s underpowered relative to your current gear, forcing you to waste materials to infuse it in order to bring its Power level up.

Better yet is what Destiny 2 project lead Mark Noseworthy confirmed on Twitter recently: You no longer have to equip your best gear when decrypting. The game automatically determines what your best possible loadout is and uses that figure when dictating the Power of an Engram. As a result, you’re essentially free to use whatever gear you want–you’re no longer impacting the strength of your drops by using a lower-level piece of gear you prefer.

We’ve got tons of tips and guides for Destiny 2, with more still to come; one other thing to make sure you’re aware of is that you may want to save your Upgrade Points. For thoughts on the game itself, check our Destiny 2 review diary.

  • Top 10 UK Sales Chart: Destiny 2 Is 2017's Biggest Launch Yet, But Falls Short Of Destiny 1

Destiny 2 has finished top of the UK physical video games chart in its first week on sale, dethroning Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in the process. However, according to GamesIndustry.biz, Destiny 2’s launch week sales were down 58% over the original.

Bungie’s sci-fi shooter follows in the wake of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dishonored 2, and Watch Dogs 2, each of which sold less in their respective first week on sale than their predecessors. However, it should be noted that unlike the original game, Destiny 2 did not launch on PS3 and Xbox 360, and some players may be waiting for the sequel’s PC version, which launches on October 24. In addition, sales monitor Chart-Track does not take digital sales into account. Even so, Destiny 2 had the biggest launch of the year so far.

Below Destiny 2 and Uncharted, retailer price promotions see Forza Horizon 3 rise to No.3 and Fallout 4 to No.5. Between them lies the ever-present Grand Theft Auto V. The week ending September 9 saw three new releases: Sony’s PS4 exclusive Knack 2 debuts at No.12, Capcom’s Monster Hunter Stories at No.21, and the Nintendo Switch physical release of The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ at No.36.

In our Destiny 2 review in progress, critic Kallie Plagge said “Destiny 2 builds on the original in smart ways.” For more, you can check out our Destiny 2 review diary or take a look at all the Destiny 2 guides and tips you need to know.

You can see the full top 10 in the list below. This table does not include digital sales data, and thus should not be considered representative of all UK game sales.

    1. Destiny 2
    2. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
    3. Forza Horizon 3
    4. Grand Theft Auto V
    5. Fallout 4
    6. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
    7. F1 2017
    8. Dishonored 2
    9. Doom
    10. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

  • Destiny 2's Farm Holds A Really Cool Secret Easter Egg

Destiny 2 is out today, and most people are rushing to blast through the campaign and get ready for next week’s Raid. But if you’re willing to take a break from leveling up, the Farm social space holds an intriguing secret that you might have overlooked.

Mild spoilers for Destiny 2 secrets ahead. If this is something that you want to try and discover on your own, you’ll want to skip the rest of this story.

Originally revealed on the Destiny Reddit forum by user Myndit, you can (temporarily) unlock a nifty glowing look and the ability to jump really high in the social space by following a very specific series of steps. We’ve outlined exactly what you need to do in the video above, but here’s the shorthand to activate and complete the Farm’s Scouting Patrol. Note that you can complete these initial steps in whatever order you’d like.

    1. Head over to where Tess Everis is selling her wares.
    2. Hop on top of her tarp, and take a running jump toward the watermill building.
    3. Walk to the waterwheel and walk on top until you see text pop up that says “Sentry Ranks” and “Wheel Boost” completed. From here, your character will glow blue, and you can jump higher.
    4. Walk along the wire connecting the water mill to the tall building that the Postmaster is parked in front of.
    5. Follow the next set of wires connecting that building to the other tall structure where you meet Suraya. You’ll automactially activate “Sentry Ranks x4” and “Vertigo Completed.”
    6. Next, you’ll head to the camp fire at the opposite end of the Farm from the soccer field.
    7. Activate “Scouting Patrol.” You’ll glow red and be able to jump even higher (though beware, you still take falling damage).
    8. Follow the glowing lights (around 10 in all) until you’ve hit them all, after which, you’ll get to keep the cool glowing effect called “Commander’s Blessing” until you either leave the Farm or die.

The entire journey feels a bit random, but it’s a cool effect. Does it have a deeper meaning or some other use that we haven’t discovered yet? We’ll have to wait to find out. In the meantime, if you’re looking for more tips about how to be better at Destiny 2, check out our guide here.
