    Captain Flame Teaser

CineLabyrinth has debuted the teaser trailer for a funky new superhero-fantasy movie from Hungary titled Captain Flame, originally Lángkapitány in Hungarian. The super low budget indie film is designed to look like it was made in the 1980s and released on VHS, and this teaser trailer is even promoted as “VHS retro.” Captain Flame is about a burned out, alcoholic “superhero” who only has the ability to make a small flame with his fingers. His city is being overrun by anarchists, and he becomes the hero the city needs just when it needs one the most. Captain Flame stars Peter Minarovits, with a full cast of Hungarian dubbing voice actors including Dorina Csifo, Gabor Harsanyi, Andras Borbiro, Borcsa Erdős, Peter Petrik, Zsolt Zagoni, and Karoly Kassai. I’m not sure what to make of this, have a look if you’re curious anyway. ›››

First Teaser for Guy Ritchie's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Movie for Disney

    Aladdin Trailer

“Only one may enter here, one whose worth lies far within, the diamond in the rough.” Disney has revealed the first teaser trailer for their live-action take on Aladdin, directed by British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, following his poorly received King Arthur movie. This new Aladdin stars Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the “street urchin” Aladdin, who falls for the princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. In addition, Will Smith plays the genie, and the cast includes Billy Magnussen, Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kenzari, Numan Acar, and Navid Negahban. This updated take on the 1992 animated Disney classic will feature new songs by Alan Menken and La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. This is only our very first look and there’s just a tiny glimpse, but it is looking shiny so far. I’m excited to see more. ›››

Review: Goddard's 'Bad Times at the El Royale' is Nothin' But a Good Time

Bad Times at the El Royale Review

American producer, screenwriter, and filmmaker Drew Goddard began his career as a writer on the hit television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, and Lost. He made his foray into film by writing the 2008 found-footage creature feature, Cloverfield. It wasn’t until his directorial debut with 2012’s The Cabin in the Woods, however, that Goddard’s talent for creating strong characters and deconstructing genre conventions fully manifested. Now, after most recently producing Netflix’s Daredevil series and writing the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s 2015 space film, The Martian, for which he earned Oscar and WGA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Goddard is back in the director’s chair for Bad Times at the El Royale, a spirited, subversive thriller steeped in ’60s nostalgia (and paranoia) with an incredible cast and a killer soundtrack. ›››

    The Best of Enemies Trailer

“They say you represent a great many people in this town…” STX has debuted the first trailer for a drama titled The Best of Enemies, marking the feature directorial debut of producer Robin Bissell. Not to be confused with the excellent documentary also titled The Best of Enemies about Gore vs Vidal, this film is about two other different friends from America’s history. The film tells the story of a rivalry, and friendship, between the local Ku Klux Klan leader in Durham, North Carolina played by Sam Rockwell, and a civil rights activist named Ann Atwater, played by Taraji P. Henson. The full cast includes Wes Bentley, Anne Heche, Sope Aluko, John Gallagher Jr., Nick Searcy, and Caitlin Mehner. This looks much better than expected, some fire & passion in these folks and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out. ›››

    Ben Is Back Trailer

“If I don’t deal with this, then it could be worse next time.” Roadside Attractions has debuted the full-length official trailer for Ben is Back, another addiction film this year and the latest by filmmaker Peter Hedges (of Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life, The Odd Life of Timothy Green). Ben is Back stars Peter’s real-life son Lucas Hedges (from Manchester by the Sea, Lady Bird) as Ben Burns, a troubled boy who returns home to his family on Christmas Eve morning. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother’s undying love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe. • Second Trailer for Shymalan's 'Glass' Starring Willis, McAvoy, Jackson

Second Trailer for Shymalan's 'Glass' Starring Willis, McAvoy, Jackson

    Glass Trailer

“I am here to see if tales of the extraordinary being are true.” Universal has debuted a second trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, the highly anticipated sequel to Shyamalan’s Split from 2016, which turned out to be a secret sequel to Unbreakable. The first trailer dropped at Comic-Con and this one is even better. Glass combines all three and brings back all of the characters: James McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb, a serial killer with 24 unique personalities; Bruce Willis as the “unbreakable” David Dunn; and Samuel L. Jackson as the frail evil villain Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass. The cast also includes Sarah Paulson as their psychiatrist, with Anya Taylor-Joy, Spencer Treat Clark, Luke Kirby, Charlayne Woodard, & Rob Yang. This is looking so damn good. I’m very impressed and excited by what we’re seeing so far. Can’t wait. ›››

  • Asa Butterfield in Official Trailer for Time Travel Romance 'Time Freak'

Asa Butterfield in Official Trailer for Time Travel Romance 'Time Freak'

    Time Freak Trailer

“I have created what every broken heart wants: a second chance.” Lionsgate has debuted the first official trailer for a time travel romantic comedy titled Time Freak, a full-length feature film version of Andrew Bowler’s Oscar nominated short film of the same name from a few years ago. The romantic comedy is about a kid who invents his own time machine to try to travel back in time and save his relationship. As expected, things go wrong. Asa Butterfield stars, with Sophie Turner, Skyler Gisondo, Will Peltz, and Aubrey Reynolds. As much as I enjoy time travel films, this has been done so many times before. When will we learn that you can’t go back in time and fix a relationship or make things go differently? It never works! And yet they keep making movies that ask and answer this question over and over, with the same result. Oh well. ›››

    Searching for Ingmar Bergman Trailer

“Isn’t art always, to a certain extent, therapy for the artist?” Oscilloscope Labs has debuted an official US trailer for the cinema documentary Searching for Ingmar Bergman, which first premiered as a Cannes Classic at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The documentary celebrates Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birthday, by taking an extensive and fascinating look at his life and creative inspiration. The doc presents key scenes and recurring themes in his films and his life, and journeys to the places at the center of Bergman’s creative achievement and the focal points of his life such as the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, locations and landscapes from his masterpieces, and his stations in Sweden, Germany, Spain, and France. This looks like a profound, entrancing, wonderful tribute to the life of a true master filmmaker. ›››

  • Sitges Review: 'The Spy Gone North' is a Gripping Korean Spy Thriller

Sitges Review: 'The Spy Gone North' is a Gripping Korean Spy Thriller

    The Spy Gone North Review

Not all spy movies are like every other spy movie. And not all spies are the same. The Spy Gone North is an impressive, riveting spy thriller from Korea, made by filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin (of The Unforgiven, Beastie Boys, Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time, Kundo: Age of the Rampant). This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in their Midnight category earlier this summer, but I just caught up with the film at the Sitges Film Festival. The more I think about, the more I love this film. It’s such a slick, superb spy film that draws you into the story and keeps you intrigued with anticipation, on the edge of your seat the entire time. And there isn’t much action, which works well for this fascinating story, yet it’s thoroughly compelling from start to finish. This film really stands out above so many others – in the way of spy films and thrillers. ›››
