Sega Mega Drive/Genesis at 30: celebrating the console that made gaming cool

The Sega Mega Drive (or Sega Genesis if you lived in North America) isn’t one of the highest selling consoles of all time, but it is easily one of the most important, and its fierce rivalry with Nintendo and its SNES machine brought about a golden axe age of home consoles.

As voted by you, the TechRadar readers, the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis has been rightly acknowledged as one of the greatest games consoles of all time – and now the pioneering console is celebrating its 30th birthday (yes, you read that correctly).

Launched in Japan as the Sega Genesis way back in 1988, it fast became a fixture kids’ bedrooms around the world, and now holds a very special place in the hearts of    millennials everywhere.

Many console generations are defined by the rivalries between the major players, and the 16-bit era saw Sega pulling out all the stops in a bid to beat Nintendo. School yards across the globe were split between Nintendo and Sega fans, and while the Mega Drive/Genesis didn’t beat the SNES in the end, it was a revolutionary product that was in production for almost 10 years, and is home to more than 900 games.

There may be a little of the old Sega fanboy in me when I say this, but without the Mega Drive/Genesis many of the features we take for granted in modern games consoles would never exist.

    The cool kids’ console

When Sega released the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988 (launching later as the Genesis in the US in 1989, and reaching Europe in 1990), Nintendo was in ascendance, with the NES being a huge hit, and the SNES on the horizon.

As a kid in the UK, the Mega Drive’s delayed release was actually a benefit, as it had an incredibly healthy launch line up that would make any console (and especially the Nintendo Switch) green with envy, with the likes of Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Altered Beast, Columns and Golden Axe available to buy on day one in Europe.

Despite Nintendo’s success, the company was seen by many gamers as ‘safe’ and ‘kid friendly’ – a perception that some still have today, and one that Sega masterfully exploited. Sega’s famous ‘Genesis Does What Nintendon’t’ campaign pitched Sega’s new console as the cocky and cool upstart that dared to go where Nintendo feared to tread.

Sure, it’s a product of the early 1990s, where everything was ‘awesome’ and ‘rad’, but it also worked. For many kids, Sega was cool and Nintendo was lame, and it was arguably one of the first consoles that appealed to adults as well. Funnily enough, I was recently flicking through an old issue of Viz, the British adult comic, which featured the following advert for the Mega Drive.

The humor is crass and rude (very much in keeping with the publication it appeared in), but it showed that Sega was pitching this at adults as much as the cool (and naughty) kids who were sneakily reading Viz as well. You’d never catch Nintendo doing that.

The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis also had Blast Processing, which was much cooler sounding than any technology found in the SNES, even if it was mainly just marketing fluff. However, perhaps the best feature the Mega Drive/Genesis had over the SNES was that its plastic shell didn’t turn urine-yellow when left in sunlight. Beat that Nintendo fanboys!

    Battle of the mascots

The battle between Sega and Nintendo in the late 1980s/early 1990s was typified by the companies’ mascots. While Nintendo had the cuddly, mushroom-gobbling plumber Mario, Sega had Sonic, a ‘rad’ and ‘extreme’ hedgehog ‘full’ of ‘attitude’.

While the levels Mario made his way through required pin-point jumping accuracy, careful climbing and large-scale reptile genocide, Sonic’s levels were designed to be belted through at breakneck speeds, the hardware of the Mega Drive sometimes struggling to keep up. Falls or mistimed jumps rarely ended in death, but instead highlighted a new way through the level – which kept the high pace of the gameplay from being interrupted.

While World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros is undoubtedly a masterpiece of level design, me and my friends played though Emerald Hill Zone 1 in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 far more times, as we tried to beat each other’s fastest time. It required memorising the levels and knowing every shortcut, an early precursor to speed run challenges.

    Add-ons galore

The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was in production for almost 10 years, and Sega attempted to prolong its lifespan with a series of add-ons for the console. While these add-ons were mainly curiosities, it showed an inventiveness and willingness to try new things that is often absent in recent console generations.

The Sega CD connected to the Mega Drive and allowed it to play CDs, which were all the rage at the time. The audacity of launching a £270 ($299, AU$400) add-on for a console was unheard of, and while not many console makers have attempted that folly since, Sony’s PSVR feels like a continuation of that mindset.

You could also argue that Sega’s other add-on, the 32X, which boosted the Mega Drive/Genesis’ processing power and was seen as a stopgap mid-generation release before the 32-bit era properly launched, was the forbearer of the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio mid-gen upgrades.

Let’s not leave out innovative cartridges such as Micro Machines, which included two additional controller ports for four player multiplayer, and Sonic & Knuckles, which let you plug in Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 cartridges and play as Knuckles.

While many people have suggested that these off-the-wall ideas contributed to Sega’s downfall, they also typified the exciting innovation that was happening with games consoles at the time. While I enjoyed the Saturn, and adored the Dreamcast, Sega’s follow ups, the Mega Drive/Genesis was Sega’s last great console, and its rivalry with the SNES meant that anyone who lived through the great console war of the 16-bit era had some amazing memories of fantastic games.

Sega Mega Drive / Genesis’ best games

    Sonic the Hedgehog 2

To be honest, you could pick any of Sonic’s 2D 16-bit adventures and be certain you were in for a great time. While Sonic’s star has fallen with the move to 3D, back in the early ‘90s Sonic’s breath-taking level designs, artwork and music showed Sega was at the top of its game. While 3D Sonic games failed to capture that magic, Mega Drive-era Sonic still holds considerable influence, and this year’s eagerly awaited Sonic Mania looks set to bring back that 16-bit glory.

    Aladdin

There was a time when film tie-in games were actually pretty good, and Disney’s Aladdin is one of them. Taking full advantage of the power of the Mega Drive/Genesis, Aladdin reproduces the feel of the animated movie with bright and vibrant characters and background art. It also had a fantastic set piece level where you flew through the cave of mystery on the flying carpet as lava, rocks and other obstacles flew your way. Best of all, the Mega Drive version of Aladdin was far superior to the SNES version – providing extra ammo for playground console wars!

    Streets of Rage

Streets of Rage brought side-scrolling action, over the top violence and arcade-like graphics and gameplay into your home. It’s one of those games that defined an entire genre, and again proved that the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis is a very different beast, with more adult games, than the kid-friendly SNES.

  • Video: Check Out Paratroopa's Skills On Court In This New Mario Tennis Aces Clip

Out at the start of next month.

Recent Mario Tennis games have had a tendency to release characters over time and the latest entry on Switch is no different. So far, Camelot has added characters like Diddy Kong and Birdo, and soon the famous flying Koopa will join the cast of Mario Tennis Aces.

In preparation for Koopa Paratroopa’s arrival at the start of next month, Nintendo Japan has released a new trailer highlighting his airborne skillset. He’ll float around the court in a similar fashion to Boo, with the abilities of a technical player. The character was officially confirmed earlier this year during the September Nintendo Direct.

  • Classic Sega And Taito Music Coming To KORG Gadget As DLC In 2019

    Retro goodness.

KORG Gadget made its debut on the Switch eShop earlier this year in April. As you might have previously heard, the music maker came bundled with a stack of synthesisers and drum machines. It even had unique features like real-time pitch control and piano roll editing using Joy-Con motions. In our review, we gave KORG Gadget seven out of ten stars and said it offered an entirely new experience for Nintendo’s hybrid console and encouraged users to continually refine their tracks.

If you did pick up this impressive piece of software on release, you’ll be pleased to hear a certain variety of classic video game tracks are on the way. Developer Detune has revealed OTORII and EBINA gadgets will be made available as DLC in early 2019. OTORII allows classic Sega songs to be produced and EBINA will let users recreate retro Taito sounds. The DLC also includes Sega’s original Out Run and After Burner music and tracks from Taito’s Darius and Ninja Warriors.

  • Video: Bandai Namco Releases Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission Teaser Trailer

    The ultimate card battle.

Last week, the latest issue of V-Jump revealed Bandai Namco would be bringing yet another Dragon Ball game to the Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, this one’s a bit different from the usual release. It’s a card game by Dimps Corporation, requiring players to think about every move rather than aimlessly mash buttons in hope.

As previously explained in the Japanese manga magazine, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission includes more than 1,160 cards – covering Super Dragon Ball Heroes 1 to 8 and Universe Mission 1 and 2 (previously released on the 3DS). There are also over 350 characters from the Dragon Ball series to fight with. You can now get a glimpse of the game for the first time in the newly released teaser trailer.

  • Bethesda Confirms It Won't Be Bringing Fallout 76 To The Nintendo Switch

    It can’t be done.

Bethesda has been one of Nintendo’s biggest third-party supporters during the Switch generation so far, but unfortunately, its latest release – Fallout 76 – won’t be coming to the hybrid system.

At a PAX Australia panel yesterday, Bethesda’s Marketing Executive Pete Hines said the multiplayer Fallout game would not be released on the Nintendo Switch because it wasn’t possible. He elaborated on this by saying how every Bethesda studio considers the Switch when releasing a new game:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 Cheat Codes: How To Find And Activate Them

Rockstar Game’s latest release, Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 and Xbox One, is a game where you’ll want to spend a great deal of time uncovering all of its secrets and details. You can spend 50-plus hours just completing the main story, slowing accumulating wealth and honor. But if you’re someone looking for a shortcut–who wants to find a quick path to success while living the life of an outlaw in the last days of the wild west–we’ve got you covered. Much like the original game and GTA V, Red Dead 2 features an assortment of cheat codes that unlock additional resources, with some injecting odd gimmicks and quirks into your game.

To find the Cheats menu, press the pause button and select the Settings option. In this menu, press Triangle or Y (on PS4 and Xbox One, respectively) to pull up the Cheats menu. From here, you’ll find a long list of locked cheats. Initially, you won’t know what any of these do or how to unlock them. Many of these codes can be activated by putting in the correct phrase, but others will require some extra time and effort.

In addition to finding passwords while exploring the world, some of which are written into the ground, throughout the game you’ll find newspapers for sale in towns, and some of these offer clues as to how to unlock these extra fun options. More newspapers will become available after completing main missions, which you’ll see detailed in news articles. While many of these cheats introduce some mostly benign bits of fun–such as keeping your character, Arthur Morgan, perpetually drunk–activating these codes at any time will have some consequences for your save game. Once you activate these codes, all Trophies and Achievements will be deactivated on this particular file. As a result, before trying any of these codes, be sure to make a separate file for your main save.

With over 30 codes to unlock, some of which have some specific requirements, we’ve collected a list of cheats that we’ve uncovered thus far. We also have a separate feature discussing some of the most entertaining and best cheats in Red Dead Redemption 2. Be sure to check back with GameSpot as we update this page with new codes, and how to find them.

  • Red Dead 2 Honor System Guide: How Morality And Honor Work

Red Dead 2 Honor System Guide: How Morality And Honor Work

The new Honor system in Red Dead Redemption 2 works differently than that of its predecessor; it’s far more sophisticated. A large number of your actions impact the world, and you’ll have to deal with a variety of consequences that can unfold based on what you do, even if it’s something as simple as drawing your gun. Based on our experiences with the game, we’ve rounded up some thoughts and important things to know to help you on your way. It’s worth noting that Arthur is a remorseless outlaw who skews toward the morally dubious side given his place in the Van Der Linde gang. But he does have some redeeming qualities, and he isn’t totally stone-hearted. In this piece we break down all the key components of the game’s honor and morality system.

Performing actions as simple as greeting people will boost his honor, which is represented in the game through a slider that is white and red, and a hat moves up and down. The white hat icon pops up on screen for good deeds, while a red hat emerges when you’ve done bad things. You can check your honor status at any time by pressing down on the D-pad.

    No Caption Provided

Some of the other ways you can improve your honor are by throwing back fish that are too small to keep, offering to help people you meet on the side of the road, and sparing people when you have the choice in key situations. You can also pet dogs to boost your honor. Basically, if your deed gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling, you can bet Arthur’s honor will improve.

Things that negatively impact Arthur’s honor include any number of actions that run from running someone over with your horse to blasting their head clear off with a shotgun. On the other hand, you may become a worse person in the eyes of Red Dead Redemption 2 include assaulting innocent people, looting innocent people’s corpses (even if you didn’t kill them), murdering people for no reason, mugging people, and running them down with your horse. Keeping fish that are too small also hurts your honor, while failing to mercy kill an animal after you miss a clean kill shot also incurs an honor hit (as it should!).

There are benefits for being nice and honorable, and consequences when you’re a jerk. For example, you may come across a man wailing in pain on the side of the road who informs you he’s been bit by a poisonous snake. You can suck the poison out and save his life or leave him to die. Upon saving the man, he gushes praise for you selfless and courageous act, but then you just go on your way, presuming to never seen him again. But you later see this man in Strawberry (or another town in the world), and he thanks you again and rewards you by paying for any gun you want from the gunsmith. If you chose to leave the man to die, this most likely never would have happened.

You might accidentally run someone over with your horse or click the shoot button when you meant to simply talk. Thankfully, the honor and morality system is flexible and fluid. So even if you gun down a group of innocents, you can swing back your honor pendulum by making an effort to do more good in the world. Or you can re-load a past save. It’s also a good idea to be careful when you’re on the extreme edges of the morality meter, as a single action in the opposite direction can knock your rating up or down significantly. For example, editor Edmond Tran accidentally knocked someone over with a horse and saw his honor meter drop by about one eighth, which is a lot.

In my playthrough, I tried to be an absolute monster who constantly engaged in dishonorable actions. I was able to get my morality meter almost completely on the dishonorable side–and I never bathed or contributed to camp–and ended up experiencing a number of adverse effects. Due to my criminal behavior, some missions were listed as temporarily unavailable due to my “Wanted” level, and it can take awhile for these to become available again. This can happen even if you’re playing as a more honorable Arthur, so that’s something to be aware of.

    No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

What’s more, when you accidentally mow someone over with your horse in town, you may not be able to defuse the situation and convince a witness to decide not to report as you could if you were more of a nice guy. I was unable to pay off a witness or threaten them to stop, presumably due to how much of a scumbag I’d been in the past. Not only is it more difficult to persuade witnesses to not report your crime when you’re a degenerate, but once they do, you’ll encounter heavy patrols of well-armed law enforcement coming after you. On top of that, Bad Arthur racks up bounties individually by region, so you’ll always have to be vigilant when traveling around. You can pay your bounty at any post office in the game, but doing so won’t instantly make you a white knight.

Your honor level in Red Dead Redemption 2 affects the game in ways you may not immediately notice. For example, the music changes depending on your status, while the journal entries that Arthur records reflect the decisions he’s made in the story. What’s more, the killcams become more gruesome when you’re a detestable jerk who only looks out for number one. If you’re playing as Nice Guy Arthur, you’ll enjoy benefits like store discounts, among other things.

Rockstar Games has teased that honorable and dishonorable activities will have consequences that you might not see or notice for a very long time, so it will be intriguing to see how some key choices play out in the long run as we continue playing.

What do you think about the honor system in Red Dead Redemption 2? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Red Dead 2 Cores Guide: How Health, Stamina, And Dead Eye Cores Work

Among the new systems introduced in Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are Cores, which reflect the state of Arthur’s abilities. These are represented via the circular meters located just above your mini-map on the HUD. If you want to perform at your best, you’ll need to pay attention to these Cores and the bars that encircle them.

If you’ve just started the game, chances are all of this Core and bar talk might be a bit confusing. After all, you’re only given a very brief explanation in-game on how it all works, and this comes while you might be paying attention to dialogue or other happenings. And the details in the menu offer only so much insight. To help you get a grasp of the Core system, we’ve detailed in this feature how it all works and other useful information to keep in mind.

If you’re looking for more guides, you’d be remiss not to check out our feature highlighting all the tips you should know before playing. Though, we also have guides on more specific subjects, like gun customization and money making. Be sure to read our Red Dead 2 review if you haven’t already. If you’re having trouble dealing with all this, you can turn on the cheat code that instantly refills your Cores and bars. But we all know that’s no fun, so read on to the details below!

    What Are Cores And Bars?

As stated, Cores are the circular meters located just above the mini-map. You have three Cores in total: Health, Stamina, and Dead Eye. In addition, there are Cores for your horse’s Health and Stamina. The symbol at the center of the circle represents the Core, while the ring meter that surrounds it is known as a bar.

    No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

While the state of your bars are more important in the moment, it’s your Cores that ultimately affect your long-term performance. This is because how well you do depends on the state of your corresponding Core. For example, the Health Core dictates how quickly the Health bar regenerates, and likewise for Stamina. If your Health bar is low but the corresponding Health Core has been maintained well, the rate at which you generate Health will be increased.

How Do I Refill My Cores?

To ensure your Cores are in tiptop shape, you’ll need to keep yourself well fed, well-rested, and comfortably dressed in the climate you’re in. Of course, you can always resort to items if you’re ever in a pinch and can’t seek out food or rest; Provisions instantly refill your Cores and Tonics will instantly refill your bars. Be mindful of which you choose to take, as while Tonics are good in the moment in the midst of a firefight, they’re more short-term life-savers than the long-term benefit of using a Provision.

What Does It Mean To Fortify A Bar?

    No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

As you take Tonics, you’ll notice that some fortify specific bars; these are represented as yellow items in your satchel. If you take this type of Tonic, the affected bar will fill up completely and won’t drain for a few moments. How long a bar remains fortified depends on the quality of the Tonic. It’s also worth noting that some Tonics can negatively impact your Cores, so make sure to pay attention to their descriptions before you take them–lest you want to find yourself made weaker during a firefight or intense hunt.

    Bars Level Up Over Time

The state of your Cores affects the regeneration of your Health, Stamina, and Dead Eye, but the more you play the game, the more powerful your bars will become. Sprinting, for example, increases your Stamina bar, while taking damage and then restoring Health will build your Health bar. If you properly maintain yourself, all of your abilities will naturally improve over time.

    Horse Cores And Bars

    No Caption Provided

Horse Cores are represented by the Health and Stamina Cores with horseshoes in the center of them that appear when you’re on your horse. While mostly identical to how your own Cores work, where they differ is how you maintain and increase them. Instead of overall maintenance of the horse’s physical and dietary needs, you develop its Cores and bars by forming a stronger bond with them. Foods and Tonics can be used to help the general effort, but it’s more through riding your horse, praising it, and grooming it will ultimately improve a horse’s Health and Stamina.

  • Flaming Hoops Locations In Fortnite (Week 5 Challenge Guide)

Season 6, Week 5 of Fortnite has officially begun, meaning the next batch of challenges is now live, ready and waiting for you to complete them. This, it turns out, is easier said than done as there’s a couple of tricky challenges among them. The first of these involves finding five flaming hoops and jumping through them using a Shopping Cart or ATK. You might remember this one from previous seasons, as it has been used before. However, the exact locations of the flaming hoops have changed, so you’ll still need to dart around the map looking for them.

Or, alternatively, you could use our handy dandy guide here. We’ve found the flaming hoops and launched ourselves through them. Below you’ll find a list of the exact locations of the hoops, along with a map that offers a visual representation of their locations. All you have to do is head to the points and do your best Evel Knievel impression. Just remember to grab an ATK or Shopping Cart along the way. You can also watch the video above to see us do it. Here’s where to go:

Fortnite Season 6, Week 5 Flaming Hoops Locations

    • East of Retail Row on Car Sculpture
    • East of Paradise Palms
    • Northeast of Lucky Landing
    • North side of Dusty Divot
    • Between Risky Reels and Wailing Woods

Alongside the weekly challenges, Fortnite developer Epic Games has also kicked off Fortnitemares, a Halloween event with its own unique selection of challenges. The event is quite different from anything Fortnite’s battle royale mode has done before, as it includes an element of PvE.

“During Fortnitemares, you’ll face off against Cube Monsters in a whole new way of playing Battle Royale,” Epic explains. “There are new weapons to fight back against these creepy creatures, like the Six Shooter and Fiend Hunter Crossbow. Take out the Cube Fiends and Fragments to pick up loot, and survive against enemy players.”

The reward for completing the Fortnitemare challenges is cool new cosmetics, including a special skin. The Deadfire Outfit is described as a “new type of reactive outfit” that, as you progress in a match, will change. The shift in visual style is dependent on the damage you deal to your enemies and also how long you’re able to stay alive. The skin also comes with the Shackled Stone Back Bling, and the Dark Shard pickaxe is also available in the store. These are also reactive cosmetics.

All this was rolled out as part of the latest patch. Take a look at the full Fortnite update 6.20 patch notes for more on everything that has been changed, tweaked, added, or removed.
