  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveals all its remaining fighters, for now

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveals all its remaining fighters, for now

Just when we thought we’d heard it all, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate managed to surprise us.

Today’s Nintendo Direct was fully dedicated to the incoming Smash Bros game, which launches on December 7 and is sure to be a big seller over the coming months.

In it, the final two fighters were revealed to be Street Fighter’s Ken – an Echo Fighter of Ryu with more kicking – and the fire-fighting type Pokemon Incineroar, rounding off the list to 74 total fighters at launch.

We’d heard rumors of the so-far unannounced fighters after a convincing Smash Bros leak, which seemed to show a full roster also including Shadow the Hedgehog and a host of other lesser-known Nintendo characters – but they were nowhere to be seen…

    That’s right, there’s DLC

    Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

It looks like Nintendo will be drip-feeding new characters in paid DLC, with current plans for five add-on packs each with a brand-new fighter, new fighting stage, and additional bonus tracks to underscore the action.

Players can also buy a $24.99 (about £20 / AU$35) Fighters Pass to get access to all five as they release, rather than paying $5.99 per DLC, and will also get an exclusive Mii Fighter outfit based on Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

There’s no firm release dates for the new content – Nintendo stresses they’re still being worked on – but there’s a general expectation that all five packs will release in the next year. We also know that each new fighter will be a fleshed-out character in their own right, rather than just Echo versions of those already on the roster.

    Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

We did, however, get a sneak peak of the next addition –none other than the Piranha Plant from the Super Mario series, who’s now able to potter around the game’s stages in its, eh, plant pot while wreaking havoc on Mario and others. You’ll need to pre-order the game for this one, though, so if you’re committed to this fighter we recommend you do.

Whether or not the ‘leaked’ characters will find their way is uncertain – if there’s no Banjo-Kazooie we’ll feel very cheated – though the inclusion of Incineroar and Piranha Plant does seem to undermine the leaked image.

We’ve run through the Nintendo Direct’s other announcements – on the long-rumored ‘spirits’ and Spirit Mode, for one – alongside the game’s other lore and news in our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hub.

  • Microsoft Mixer jazzes up its live streams with new currencies and animations

Microsoft Mixer jazzes up its live streams with new currencies and animations

Microsoft’s live streaming platform, Mixer, is getting a big ol’ update today with a host of new user-focused features – and a number to come down the line too.

Launched as ‘Beam’ in 2014, the live-stream platform was quickly snapped up and rebranded by Microsoft to launch its own competitor to Twitch.

Mixer has now entered what it calls ‘Season 2’ of its ongoing development, to try to offer a meaningful alternative to Twitch’s much larger platform, with a larger focus on viewer engagement and ways in which users can interact during streams – whether moving around objects in-game or making decisions on what the streamer will do.

Season 2’s changes include livening up comment threads during live-streams, with the somewhat oddly-named ‘Skills’ – allowing for a wider range of animations, GIFs, and images than just scrolling lines of text. Cue confetti, astonished robots, and beach balls jumping across the screen (and not just your screen, either).

    Microsoft Mixer Season 2

Viewers earn Sparks currency by watching live-streams

Mixer’s on-site Sparks currency – which is earned by watching or engaging with streamers’ broadcasts – can be used to purchase these Skills. Streamers on the site will also be directly rewarded if they hit specific milestones of viewer numbers or engagement – incentivizing viewers to spend on Skills when watching their favorite streamers.

Other incoming features include a new souped-up currency (Mixer Embers) for buying bigger-impact forms of engagement, as well as an Applaud button for cheering on other viewers’ comments and contributions.

Mixer has a way to go to truly take on Twitch, but Season 2 certainly seems like an improved experience for those willing to go with Microsoft’s growing platform.

  • Balloons Will Heighten Your Chances Of Winning Fortnite's Battle Royale Mode

    Going up.

Epic Games has continued to refine and improve its free-to-play battle royale mode in Fortnite to help give it the edge over any potential competitors. It’s this fun and accessible design that sets it apart from the rest – with the addition of trolleys, llama piñatas and plenty of funny character costumes.

In the latest patch – version 6.21, balloons have been added. There are no surprises for guessing what this item does. With it, you can float high up into the sky and avoid battles altogether. Based on the trailer, the more balloons you have, the higher you go. You can also release balloons to lower yourself. If your character is shot out of the sky, there might even be a chance to break your fall by crafting something on the way down. Take a look at the clip above to see balloons in action on the battlefield.

  • Crashlands Is Out On The Switch eShop Next Week, Includes Co-Op Survival Fun

    Survive together.

It feels like a lifetime ago Crashland was announced for the Switch eShop and it’s basically because the last we heard about the title was way back in March. The developer Butterscotch Shenanigans has now confirmed the game will be released next week on 8th November.

Crashlands is a 2016 sci-fi survival adventure with top-down shooter mechanics, where you take on the role of Flux Dabes – an intergalactic delivery trucker who ‘crash lands’ on an alien planet. Your job is to keep her alive so she can complete her delivery on time. As noted in the tweet below, you’ll be able to team up with a second player in the new couch co-op mode – which is making its debut on the Nintendo Switch.

  • Blizzard's Loot Goblin amiibo Will Hoard Treasure For You This December

    Earn money fast.

Following the rumours from earlier this week, Blizzard Entertainment has now confirmed the existence of the Loot Goblin amiibo – arriving at some point this December. The exclusive amiibo for Diablo III: Eternal Collection will allow Switch players to summon a portal and gain access to “untold riches” according to the official description. The announcement was delivered via the company’s official Twitter account:

Arguably, it’s the most unique-looking third-party amiibo yet – featuring a red base and a design that does not perfectly match the original creature in the game. Noticeably, the packaging for the amiibo is also different. Many Blizzard fans have pointed out the figurine is a recoloured version of an existing Treasure Goblin toy from the Cute But Deadly series. If any other Diablo-themed amiibo are revealed, it’ll likely be at BlizzCon’s main event starting on 2nd November and finishing on 3rd November.

  • Team Xbox Looks Back on Their Favorite ID@Xbox and Indie Game Memories

Team Xbox Looks Back on Their Favorite ID@Xbox and Indie Game Memories

All of us here on Team Xbox are tremendous fans of the talent involved in the creation of games, especially those that come into the ID@Xbox program. From cartoon platformers to adventure games to strategy simulators, there’s a robust catalog of titles that deliver countless memories from those gaming worlds. It’s almost unfair that we can only share a few of those with you too, but we’ve taken some of our most memorable moments and captured them here in this feature. Enjoy.

Chris Charla – Senior Director of ID@Xbox

Having been part of ID@Xbox since the beginning, it’s extremely hard to pick one moment from the thousands of great moments and games and people involved with this program on both the Xbox and developer side. But if you made me pick just one, it would be E3 2015, when I was onstage, in the dark, watching Chad and Jared Moldenhauer introduce Cuphead. I knew how hard they were working, and I knew that after the teaser the year before, people were expecting a lot. I also know how much that trailer was going to blow everyone away. That moment when the StudioMDHR logo came up on stage, I got goosebumps like I never have before, and I just could not get the silly grin off my face watching that game own the stage at E3. There have been tons and tons and tons of other fantastic moments and games over the last five years, but that moment will always stay with me!

    Brothers Screenshot

    Brothers Screenshot

Phil Spencer – Head of Xbox

The game that comes to mind for me is Brothers. I have such a vivid memory of the first time I completed the game as there’s a key moment at the end in which the game mechanic is designed to reinforce the emotion I felt as a player. If you haven’t played it, Brothers is a cooperative, puzzle-based game where each thumbstick controls one of the two brothers on screen simultaneously. In the game, the brothers’ mother has died and their dad is sick and in need of medicine. The game is about the brothers’ quest to get medicine and by the end of the game, the older brother dies as well. As the story draws to a close, the younger brother is alone, trying to get back to his dad and to do so, he must swim across a stream. We learn early in the game that the younger brother does not swim. Until this moment in the game, he’s only crossed water on the back of his older brother.

So there I was, trying to finish the game, pausing and working to solve the puzzle of how to get the younger brother across the water without his older brother. And then the answer just came to me and when I tried it and it worked – it was spine tingling. I felt the loneliness and sadness of the young brother. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a gameplay mechanic that evoked emotion in the way Brothers did for me and so many other players.

    Never Alone

    Never Alone

Ashley McKissick – Head of Xbox Game Pass

Four years ago, when my son was six-years-old, we spent our winter vacation playing Never Alone and exploring the Iñupiat culture together.  It was the perfect game to play with my little one. The co-op nature meant that we had to work together, and the controls were so intuitive and well-crafted. The fact that, while playing through the adventure, we also got to learn about this special Alaskan Native community, made it even more special. I also just absolutely loved the art style in Never Alone, especially the environments, and I am so glad that ID@Xbox enabled us to discover this game. Playing this little gem will remain a fond holiday memory for my son and I.

    Manual Samuel

    Manual Samuel

Craig Duncan – Studio Head, Rare Games

I’ve enjoyed many incredible ID@Xbox games over the years but my favorite moment is quite a recent one while browsing the what’s new in Xbox Game Pass section there was a game called Manual Samuel. I hadn’t heard of it but was drawn to the art of a cartoon death holding a puppet and then spent the next few hours being pulled out of my gaming comfort zone doing what appeared to be normal everyday tasks; without spoiling the plot which everyone should experience spoiler free it made me smile throughout and laugh at some of the dialog and the crazy moments that poor Samuel had to navigate with appropriate well deserved achievements awarded throughout including probably the craziest driving achievement I have ever earned ? A really funny, enjoyable and unique little adventure.

    Overcooked 2

    Overcooked 2

Katie Stone Perez – Principal Program Manager, Mixer

The timer ends, you see the results, and my daughters jump up and cheer “We did it!” We have come together as a family and defeated the unbread. That’s my favorite ID@Xbox moment. My family loves playing games together and Overcooked 2 provides a great level of challenge but when we work together we can always be successful. Each level starts with us coming up with a plan and then the chaos ensues. The game has become an almost nightly ritual for us before bed and I love that we can have that moment of success that unites us as a family.

    Chariot

    Chariot

Jeff Rubenstein – Xbox Comms and Inside Xbox Host

I may not recall my daughter’s first word, or exactly when she took her first steps. Should we have saved a lock of hair from her first haircut? Yet I vividly remember her first Minecraft world, I showed her how to record her first PotG in Overwatch, and was sitting right next to her during her first Fortnite Victory Royale – the culmination of a carefully laid game education curriculum that began with… Chariot. Yes, Frima Games’ platformer has players dragging a king’s coffin to a more luxurious burial site to placate his demanding spirit (who berates you on your journey), but it’s colorful, kid-friendly, and teaches the mechanics of platforming and cooperative play. More importantly, it sparked a love of gaming and a father-daughter bonding activity that continues to this day. And that’s better than a pair of bronzed baby shoes any day.

    Stardew Valley

    Stardew Valley

Graeme Boyd – Xbox Live’s AceyBongos and Inside Xbox Host

The day I got married is one of the greatest days of my life. I am, of course, talking about Stardew Valley. My real wedding was pretty good too, I guess. But in Stardew Valley, getting married felt like the culmination of months of hard work and careful relationship building as I carved out my new life on the farm. It felt like acceptance.

That’s the funny thing about Stardew Valley – it starts out like a nice mash-up of Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, and even Minecraft. But soon enough the rhythms of it – tending your crops, selling your goods, making new friends, exploring the town, the seasons rolling in and out – they get inside you. You feel part of something special. And for me, that experience was one of the most relaxing and fulfilling I’ve ever had in a video game. Stardew Valley became my happy place (I still have a map of the town next to my desk at work and I gaze longingly at it during stressful conference calls). Getting married made it even happier.

Oh, yeah. I got married to Leah. Obviously.

    Thomas Was Alone

    Thomas Was Alone

Will Tuttle – Editor in Chief of Xbox Wire

I’m a sucker for a great narrative and ID@Xbox has no shortage of amazing narrative-driven games, from the haunting family drama of the excellent What Remains of Edith Finch to the sci-fi horror of Soma. The best of these combine a compelling narrative with unique simple-but-complex gameplay. One of my favorite games of this generation, Thomas Was Alone by Bithell Games, is a pitch-perfect example of that intoxicating blend. At first glance, the game looks like a straightforward, minimalistic platformer starring a group of quadrilateral shapes, but it quickly becomes clear that it’s much more.

Thanks to top-notch writing and some truly wonderful narration by British humorist Danny Wallace (who won a BAFTA for his performance), those little blocks become Thomas, Claire, Chris, John, and Laura. By combining those beautifully humanized shapes with some good old-fashioned puzzle platforming, Thomas Was Alone helped to push the medium forward in unexpectedly new ways.

    Cuphead Screenshot

    Cuphead Screenshot

Larry Hryb – Xbox Live’s Major Nelson and Inside Xbox Host

As a fan of film, music and obviously video games, I’ve long had an appreciation for content created and produced by independent studios. So, when I heard the ID@Xbox team was celebrating the release of their 1,000th indie title, I naturally considered some of my favorites and it was impossible not to think about Cuphead.

Cuphead is an absolute gem, featuring beautifully crafted visuals reminiscent of sound cartoons from the golden age of animation. The soundtrack is easily some of the best music you will hear in a video game, composed using live musicians playing jazz, early big band, and ragtime music, a favorite genre of mine. But Cuphead doesn’t just look and sound great, it plays great too. My colleagues may heckle me a bit as I praise Cuphead’s gameplay since I am admittedly “challenged” by some of the levels, but the game is just so much fun to play.

As great as Cuphead is though, the real magic of the game is with the number of subtle references (some might even call them Easter Eggs) seamlessly interwoven into the game. I heard mention of a Street Fighter reference when you battle the frogs Ribby and Croaks, and when I encountered that particular scene, it indeed appeared to be a clear tribute to Street Fighter.

Sure, there are the more obvious ones, like a building in the background named after the developers or the name of their studio appearing in different places. But when you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover a seemingly unending link to other cartoon characters, video games and real people including actors, musicians, artists, and cartoonists. It’s fascinating as you play the game when you recognize one of these subtle links and even more fascinating to think of all the hidden connections yet to be discovered.

  • Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Adds Microtransactions

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 now has microtransactions, at least on PlayStation 4. The game has introduced the virtual currency Call of Duty Points, which you can buy with real money and spend on items for Black Ops 4 multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout.

As developer Treyarch explained in a Reddit post, Call of Duty Points can be spent on a number of things, including Nebulium Plasma for the Zombies mode. You can also spend Call of Duty Points on new Special Orders in the Black Market, while another option is to spend them to instantly advance through the Black Market tiers, which gets you additional cosmetics. Black Ops 4’s tier system looks and operates very similarly to Fortnite‘s model, with timed events and seasons that offer cosmetic items in tiers. Unlike Fortnite, however, Black Ops 4 is a paid game, and some are taking issue with the system in Black Ops 4.

It costs 100 Call of Duty Points to acquire a tier. Call of Duty Points can be purchased in varying allotments, including 100 Call of Duty Points ($1), 2,400 Call of Duty Points ($20), and 5,000 Call of Duty Points ($40).

Everyone who downloads the Call of Duty Companion app and logs in gets 500 Call of Duty Points right away. Players who purchase the $50 USD Black Ops 4 Pass get an additional 1,000 Call of Duty Points and 300 Nebulium Plasma.

Call of Duty Points were introduced to the series with 2015’s Black Ops 3 through the Black Market system. The microtransactions have been in each new Call of Duty game since, so it is no surprise that they’re back again with Black Ops 4. Call of Duty Points stay with your account and move between titles, so if you had some leftover from Call of Duty: WWII or another previous title, they should show up in your account for Black Ops 4.

Call of Duty Points are currently exclusive to the PS4 edition of Black Ops 4; they’ll become available on Xbox One and PC next week, Treyarch said in its Reddit post.

In other news, a new patch for Black Ops 4 is out now and it makes a number of weapon balance changes and more. You can see the full patch notes here.
