  • All The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirits So Far: Rarities, Affinities, Special Abilities, And More

All The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirits So Far: Rarities, Affinities, Special Abilities, And More

A final Nintendo Direct focused on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate introduced a whole new mode, which pairs hand-in-hand with its revised way to include beloved characters from a wide variety of new and retro video games. The new “Spirits” system replaces Trophies, letting the company give power-up attributes to still artwork rather than attempt to render 3D models of every character it wishes to reference.

You earn Spirits by battling in Spirits Mode, and then they can be used to buff your character. The Spirits come in two varieties: Primary Spirits, which mostly have stat increases, and Support Spirits, which attach to Primary Spirits and imbue you with special skills or abilities. Spirits are ranked by rarity: Novice, Advanced, Ace, and Legend. They also come in three power types: Attack (Red), Grab (Green), and Shield (Blue), in a rock-paper-scissors circle of vulnerabilities.

The presentation showed dozens of Spirits rapid-fire style and with some attributes obscured by the various menus. While this list isn’t complete, it shows several of the Spirits shown so far, with their special attributes, color affinity, and rarity. Check out the list to see just how deep Nintendo is reaching with its references.

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Social Hub, Smash World, Coming Next Year

The latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentation was chock full of new announcements, including word of a special dedicated service coming next year. Dubbed “Smash World,” the free service will let you post and watch videos of your glory moments.

Game director Masahiro Sakurai teased that the service will boast other unnamed features as well, and that it will be given regular updates throughout its lifespan. The brief glimpse at the UI shown during the presentation had a large array of video captures appearing on a mobile device.

Smash World isn’t the only extra coming to Smash Bros. in 2019. The presentation also revealed plans for DLC characters, stages, and music to come throughout the year. There will be five packs in all–each of which grants one character, one stage, and some music tracks–for $6 apiece. Nintendo is also offering a Fighter Pass for $25. In addition to those five characters, Piranha Plant is being added as a playable character, and he’ll(?) be free for anyone who registers their copy of the game by January 31, 2019.

As for launch day content, the presentation revealed a few more goodies in store on that front as well. Two more fighters joined the roster–Ken and Incineroar–and we finally got a closer look at both the Adventure Mode and the new Spirits Mode, along with how online matchmaking works.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches December 7. Check out our pre-order guide for more details.

  • Diablo: Immortal Met with Negative Response by Fans, Blizzard Responds

UPDATE 11/2: Speaking with IGN at BlizzCon, Blizzard’s Wyatt Cheng responded to the community reaction to Diablo: Immortal’s announcement, as well as the accusations that it’s just a reskin of a previous NetEase mobile game.

“I don’t think mobile should be a dirty word,” Cheng said, explaining that the developers at Blizzard play and enjoy games on all platforms. “When it came to looking at making a new Diablo game, and this opportunity to partner with NetEase to make this – the technology is there, where our mobile phones are more powerful than ever, and they’re capable of top tier gaming experiences.”

Cheng responded to claims that Diablo: Immortal may be a reskin by saying the following: “We’ve been working with NetEase Games from the beginning as a partnership to create everything in Diablo: Immortal. We have artists on our side, they have artists on their side, and we work together as a team, as a partnership to create everything about Diablo: Immortal. The environments, the characters, the skills, the story.”

  • Konami Confirms It Has Not Made P.T. Inaccessible To Those Who Already Have It On Their Console

Earlier this week, rumors were swirling after a post on Reddit showed that a recent update to P.T., a playable teaser (hence the name, of course) for Konami’s canceled Silent Hills game, made it inaccessible even to those who already had it downloaded on their console. Currently, it can no longer be purchased or re-downloaded by users who own it, but the assumption that if you hadn’t deleted it you’d be able to play it for the foreseeable future.

In the wake of these rumors, Konami has issued a statement to Game Informer confirming this update does not exist. “After our investigation we can confirm that there have been no Konami or PlayStation Network(PSN) update that would have affected or prevent access to the game,” it said.

This indicates the Reddit post in question is likely fake, and was posted in order to anger or worry fans, fittingly enough, on Halloween.

It’s good to know Konami hasn’t maliciously released a patch so people couldn’t play P.T. anymore, but it’d be even better to know the company released a patch to actually make it playable and re-downloadable.

  • New Preview Beta & Delta Ring 1811 Update – 11/3/18

Starting at 2:00 p.m. PDT today, members of the Xbox One Preview Beta and Delta Rings will begin receiving a new 1811 Xbox One system update (181030-1920). Read on for more about the fixes and known issues in the latest 1811 system update.

    New Features:

    Family Settings

    • Children signing up for new accounts will now be asked to add a parent only if required to by local privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR or COPPA). This means that some minors, like teens in the U.S., will no longer have to add a parent and join a Microsoft family during signup. Xbox privacy and online safety defaults will still be applied based on age, and in order to change those, the minor would need to add a parent on Xbox who can then change their settings. Minors not in a family can add a parent anytime in Settings > Account > Family settings > Add a parent. Joining a family would also allow the parent and child to use other family features like content restrictions, screen time, activity reporting, and spending.
    • Children that are subject to local privacy regulations will still be required to add a parent during signup. While this will create a Microsoft family through which the parent can use family features like content restrictions, screen time, activity reporting, and spending, the parent will no longer be required to sign in on Xbox. If a parent wants to change their child’s Xbox privacy and online safety settings, the parent can sign in separately on Xbox and manage their family in Settings > Account > Family settings.
    • Existing child accounts are not affected by this change and will remain with their parents in their current Microsoft family.
