  • Smash Bros. Ultimate Update Coming Soon, Convert Replays To Videos Now

Smash Bros. Ultimate Update Coming Soon, Convert Replays To Videos Now

A message popping up for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate today confirms that a new update coming in the next few days. The version 1.2.0 update is the first since the game’s release last week and will be making actual balance changes to the game’s fighting. While it’s not clear what exactly the update will contain, that does mean the existing replays you have saved will become unusable.

Luckily, unlike previous games in the series, this time Nintendo is giving warning that that an update is coming and you can convert your replays into videos, keeping them from being affected by balance changes.

The way Super Smash Bros. saves replays is by recording the timing and order of button presses. So it knows when you punched Samus as Little Mac, but it doesn’t save an exact image of that moment happening. Thus, when a balance change happens like nerfing that punch to do 10 percent instead of 12 percent, it breaks the log. Now that recorded button log playing out in the actual game can’t keep up with the way it was supposed to work.

The way most other games handle this was to just have a flag in replays keeping the old balance in place for those specific fights. Still others just save replays as videos to begin with. Before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo and Bandai Namco didn’t do either of these things, but now they at least do the latter. Before the balance changes take effect, you can record a replay by converting it to video. Keep in mind this must be done before it applies the new update.

So if you have some replays you want to keep for posterity, head to it.

  • Inside Xbox One X Enhanced: Ashen

Inside Xbox One X Enhanced: Ashen

Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Character & Animation Lead Simon Dasan and Lead Designer Mike Vermeulen on Ashen at A44 about enhancing Ashen for Xbox One X.

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Ashen for Xbox One X

The A44 team aimed to create a deeply immersive world for players to get sucked into. The Xbox One X’s ability to render at 4k, allowed us to truly realize this vision for Ashen.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?

Our stylized world is one where the 4k enhancement really draws you in and breathes an entirely new layer of fidelity onto the world. Developing Ashen for Xbox One X meant that we didn’t need to make any compromises to the original vision and really enhance the overall experience.

    Ashen Screenshot

    Ashen Screenshot

Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?

At A44 we strive in every way to excel when it comes to quality. Getting access to the Xbox One X hardware allowed us to push forward on enhanced particle effects, view distances and of course, 4k.

How do you expect fans of Ashen will respond to seeing/playing it on Xbox One X with these enhancements?

We hope they’re as excited to play Ashen on Xbox One X as we were to develop for it. We have worked incredibly hard on every aspect of the game, so we can’t wait to see it in the hands of players everywhere.

How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?

To put it simply; it was incredibly easy. We had the game running on the hardware the first week we received it, so we could see early on in development what the console is capable of. Because of this, we were able to start utilizing the power and potential very quickly to ensure players would experience Ashen at its best.

    Ashen Screenshot

    Ashen Screenshot

What enhancement were you most excited about to explore leveraging for Ashen on Xbox One X?

Definitely the ability to render in true 4k. It’s one of those ‘you need to see it to believe it’ things, and Ashen’s painterly art-style translates over to 4k in a stunning way.

What does 4K for your game, games in the future and development at your studio?

With the stylized nature of Ashen, we’re super excited to be able to double down on our ability to render beautiful art in true 4k. Whenever someone is playing the build on an Xbox One X, a crowd forms. We’ve already got ideas percolating for the future, so watch this space!

  • Demolish Your Opponents’ Cars During The Crew 2 Free Weekend

If the idea of crunching your opponents’ cars while racing through an aircraft cemetery appeals to you, then the first free weekend for The Crew 2 on Xbox One is the place to be. Hot on the heels of the free Demolition Derby update, which added new destructible cars, new special events, a competitive new PvP mode, and more, The Crew 2 will be free to download and play for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One from December 13 at 12:01 a.m. PDT through December 17 at 9 p.m. PDT.

You can also take advantage of big discounts—including up 67% off the Standard & Deluxe versions of the game from December 13 through December 20, and those who play during the free weekend will be rewarded in-game with a free Xbox-exclusive BMW Z4 GT3 (2011) once the weekend has concluded. Not a bad memento for busting up your demolition derby car.

With a new physics and collision system in place, the newly added Demolition Derby cars bring destructibility to The Crew 2 for the first time. Whether you’re smashing your way to victory in an actual demolition derby on the new Bonneville Salt Flats arena, or shunting your opponents off the track as you race through the Tucson aircraft cemetery, you’ll see the consequences of your crashes manifest in a whole new way. The demolition derby cars are equally destructible in free drive, so no matter where you roam, you’ll have the scratches, dings, and missing rear quarter-panels to show for it.

Demolition Derby’s competitive spirit thrives in the new PvP mode (requires Xbox Live Gold), which introduces two new playlists for up to eight players to compete in. As you test your skills against other racers, the competitions give you a chance to take a variety of vehicles out for a spin, even if you haven’t unlocked them for your personal collection.

There are more than a dozen vehicle types available for you to collect and pilot around the huge open world of The Crew 2. From racing powerboats on pristine alpine lakes to buzzing silos in stunt planes, The Crew 2 gives you the freedom to explore the American landscape by land, water, and air. You may prefer to practice drifting in downtown Miami by yourself, but when you want to hovercraft through the bayou alongside some newfound friends, or just see how you stack up on the supercar leaderboards, The Crew 2 makes it easy to connect with other players and share the experience through Xbox Live Gold.

The Crew 2 regularly adds updates of all sizes, from introducing new disciplines and special events to bringing free new cars (Bugatti, anyone?) for players to take for a ride. The Demolition Derby update added over 20 new activities in the Drift, Alpha Grand Prix, and Rally Cross disciplines, and a new holiday-themed episode of the Live Xtrem Series challenges you to a seamless three-part race through the Rally Raid, Street Race, and Power Boat disciplines.

Play The Crew 2 for free on Xbox One from December 13-17, and if you get a hankering for more, pick up the full game for a discounted price during the December 13-20 sale and continue your free-wheeling adventures after the free weekend event.

  • Japanese Sales Charts: PS4 Numbers Increase Dramatically, But Nothing Can Stop Smash

    Holiday promotions spur Sony.

Thanks to a range of promotions at various Japanese retailers, the PlayStation 4 had its best week in a long, long time. Sony’s console shifted an impressive 75,000 units across the standard model and the PS4 Pro — that’s a rather dramatic increase of roughly 55,000 units week-on-week. It’ll be interesting to see whether these numbers can hold any kind of ground as we move deeper into the holiday season.

  • The Pillar Is the Second DLC Pack for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Coming Next Week

    It’ll be a Lara fun.

A little while back, the first DLC for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, called The Forge, was released, marking the beginning of the game’s extensive post-launch content. With a total of seven content updates, there’s plenty to look forward to for Croft fans, and Square Enix has announced the release date for the second chunk of DLC.

It’s named The Pillar, and will release on 18th December 2018. Unfortunately, that’s about all we know so far, but it’ll presumably be of a similar size to The Forge, which included a new Challenge Tomb, a score attack mode, new weapons, and other bits and pieces. A trailer showing off The Pillar DLC will no doubt appear ahead of its launch.

  • PS4 Firmware Update 6.20 Is Here to Improve System Performance

    And nothing more.

Sony has released the latest firmware update for PS4, bringing it up to system software version 6.20. This mandatory update doesn’t seem to bring any new features to the console, instead simply keeping everything ship shape, as per usual. “This system software update improves system performance,” our PS4 tells us.

Firmware update 6.20 isn’t particularly big, weighing in at just 450MB, so it won’t take you long to get it downloaded and installed. We did wonder if this update would be introducing PSN name changes to more people, seeing as the firmware version for the name changing beta is 6.10. However, we can’t see any options to change our username after installing firmware 6.20. Still, it’s a required update, so set it to download, but come back and leave us a comment while you wait.

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 Updated with Patch 1.04, Squashes a Whole Mess of Bugs

    Get outta here, ya varmints.

Rockstar is continuing its quest to vanquish bugs and glitches from the Old West with the latest update to Red Dead Redemption 2. The new patch takes the game up to version 1.04, and includes a bunch of fixes for both Red Dead Online and the single player story mode.

The main issue this patch seems to fix is several situations which cause the game to pause at 90% during loading. However, there are a few other bugs squashed in this update, making the West a little less wild. The patch is roughly 1.4GB, so shouldn’t trouble most users. You can read the full patch notes through here.

  • Should you buy a Nintendo Switch console this Christmas?

Should you buy a Nintendo Switch console this Christmas?

The Nintendo Switch, for the second year running, is the must-have console this Christmas season. After a few shakey home console years with the Wii U, Nintendo came back swinging with a transforming format that was at home in your living room as it was in your bag for on-the-go play.

But while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been around the block and had their prices (and revised console builds) reflect that, Nintendo’s gear – as ever with the produce from the Mario House – has retained its premium pricing. And so, it’s one to think long and hard about before adding to your Christmas wishlist.

As ever, TechRadar is here to help. Thinking of jumping off the fence and diving into the world of Nintendo Switch? Here are the key arguments for and against Nintendo’s mighty console.

For: why you SHOULD buy a Nintendo Switch

Its library of games is fantastic

Consoles always get off to a slow start when they’re new. A few key exclusives here, a smattering of third party developers testing the waters here. But the Nintendo Switch is now in rude health when it comes to its games offering.

You’ve now got generational classics like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild sitting next to brand new must-haves like Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Then you’ve got cross-platform smash-hits like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the superb Diablo 3, along with indie hits like Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Golf Story and Stardew Valley.  We’ve talked in the past about the Nintendo Switch being the perfect “second console” for a home after a PS4 or Xbox One, but with a line-up like that now, it could very well deserve to be your primary machine.

It’s the best console for local cooperative and competitive multiplayer play

Since the days of the multi-tap and four-ported N64 console, Nintendo has always been very supportive of local multiplayer, and that tradition continues with the Nintendo Switch. Packed in with two controllers (each half of the motion-sensing Joy-Cons can act as its own individual pad), out of the box you’re ready to play. The fact that you can set it up with its onboard screen and kickstand mean that you can huddle around and play no matter where you are – and keep from annoying mum and dad on the big telly. It’s commitment to multiplayer titles is also key here though, with many supporting as many as eight local players at once, including the smashing Smash Bros. From Mario Party to Mario Kart to Overcooked 2 to Snipperclips, there are loads of ways to enjoy Nintendo Switch fun with a friend.

The Nintendo Switch is a perfect travel companion

The first of its kind, the Nintendo Switch can be docked with a bigscreen TV for living room play, or taking out as a handheld console with controllers attached to either side of its main unit screen, ready to be run off of batteries. As mentioned earlier, there’s even a kickstand so you can gather around with friends when no other screen is available. With so many of us travelling long distances to see loved ones over the Christmas period, this makes the Nintendo Switch perfectly suited for car, train or airplane trips, giving you the option to bring console quality play on the go with you.

    Great games on the horizon

It’s been a big year for the Nintendo Switch, but 2019 could be the year when the console truly comes into its own. We’re waiting on the releases of hotly anticipated titles like Metroid Prime 4, a fully-fledged all new Pokemon game, Luigi’s Mansion 3, a new Yoshi platformer, Doom Eternal and a new Animal Crossing game. Things can only get better from here on in.

Against: why you SHOULDN’T buy a Nintendo Switch

It could be cheaper after Christmas

However, with all the positives up top said and done, the Nintendo Switch is still a relatively pricey console for its age. Black Friday came and went without a killer price-cut or bundle deal, with the Switch’s price more-or-less staying the same in the run up to Christmas as it has in the entire 12 months preceding it. Could this change in the New Year? Post-Christmas sales can be a good time to pick up discounted items for those that can wait, and we’re getting to the point where a thorough price drop (or more generous bundle deals) will be needed to coax in gamers who aren’t Nintendo-fanatic early adopters.

Nintendo Switch Online service still needs refinement

Nintendo has never been all that great at online play, and the Nintendo Switch Online Service still leaves us wanting. While it’s affordable compared to the competition and its included library of classic old school NES games is fun, it lacks the polish of Sony’s PS Plus or Microsoft’s Xbox Live. It’s still too tricky to add and find friends, there’s no onboard console chat, and Nintendo’s own first party must-have online brawler, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, has courted controversy for the way it handles certain online play elements.

There could be a Nintendo Switch 2 on the way

This is still all whispers and hear-say, but rumor has it we could be seeing a new Nintendo Switch, even a Nintendo Switch 2, on the way before long. A Wall Street Journal report back in October stated that the company was planning a rejigged Switch that would make use of a higher-quality LCD screen that would not only look better and brighter than what’s currently on offer, but deliver improved battery life too. Existing peripherals are expected to work with the revised machine, with some slight hardware improvements and potential new software features.

Of course, it’s a rumor at this stage, with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé stating the focus is on the current generation of hardware. But, with units to shift he would say that, right? And, if you look at the Nintendo Switch in the light of Nintendo’s previous handheld hardware, from the Gameboy to the 3DS each machine has had regular hardware reworkings. It may not come soon, but we’d put money on the fact this will be on the way before very long at all.
