  • PlayStation Store Sales Charts: Red Dead Redemption 2 Stands Unshaken on PS4

    One more big take.

As 2018 draws to a close, Sony’s released the sales charts for both the North American and European PlayStation Store, and it’s Red Dead Redemption 2 that takes the top spot in November. It swaps positions with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in both territories, while the main activity is a little further down the charts.

Battlefield V does pretty well, debuting in fourth place, and Spyro: Reignited Trilogy glides into the top 10 in both regions; ninth in Europe and sixth in North America. Fallout 76 nabs third position in the US, but seventh in Europe. A little surprising to see it so high, but it is a Fallout game, we suppose.

  • Save on PlayStation Hits Range with 2 for £25 Sale on EU PlayStation Store

    Classic bargains.

If the recent Christmas sales weren’t enough, Sony’s introduced another offer for European PS4 owners. This one focuses on the PlayStation Hits range of games, a selection of PS4’s top titles that are already down to a reduced price. Each game is £15.99, but if you buy two in this sale, it’ll only cost you £25 in total.

But what games are there to choose from? A fair few, as it happens, and there are some corkers here. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Ratchet & Clank, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Yakuza 0 — if you’re missing a pair from this collection, it’s well worth taking advantage of this new sale.

  • PSVR Puzzler A Fisherman's Tale Spins a Yarn on 22nd January

    There’s always a lighthouse.

We quite like the look of A Fisherman’s Tale. The premise, in which Bob the fisherman is caught in an infinite loop within his lighthouse, is an odd one, but we can’t say we’re not intrigued to learn more. Luckily, it won’t be too long before we can find out what happens to him — the PlayStation VR game is due out on 22nd January 2019.

If you’re interested, we’d recommend giving the above trailer a watch. It’s a 360 degree video, so you can move the camera all around to get a different view as the trailer explains how Bob wound up in his lighthouse in the first place.

  • Pokemon Go update: all the news and rumors for what's coming next

Pokemon Go update: all the news and rumors for what's coming next

Pokemon Go: the world’s first augmented reality app to become a household name. Niantic’s mobile AR game is still going strong two years after it first released, with a constant drip of events and updates keeping budding trainers glued to their phones and pounding the streets.

And while it hasn’t managed to top the peak of its popularity in 2016, it’s still going strong and finding plenty of new ways to improve its player experience.

So what’s the latest news for Pokemon Go? As you’d expect, brand new features are being added all the time – with Team Battles recently released and Let’s Go: Pikachu and Eevee for Nintendo Switch likely to tie in to the mobile AR game in numerous ways.

So without further ado, here’s our guide to all the new updates, rumors and tweaks promised by Niantic so far.

[Update: Trainer Battles PvP mode is now live in Pokémon Go.]

    Latest Pokemon Go updates

Pokémon Go finally has a player-versus-player (PvP) mode called Trainer Battles.

Trainer Battles allow you to participate in real-time Pokémon battles with other players and Pokémon Go team leaders.

To compete in Trainer Battles you need to create a custom Battle Party, made up of three Pokémon. This will then be your party to challenge other players and team leaders.

You can invite nearby players to participate in friendly Trainer battles through the battle code invitation system, which sees you scanning another player’s unique battle code – or vice versa. There’s also an option to partake in remote battles, but you can only invite someone to a remote battle if your in-game friendship has reached the ultra friends level or higher.

Trainer Battles also introduces a new charge attack for your Pokemon and a protect shield to defend against powerful attacks. After a Trainer Battle finishes, both players will receive a prize, as well as a chance of getting rare evolution items.

To keep players from becoming frustrated, a maximum cap has also been placed on participating Pokémon’s strength – so you can’t necessarily use your strongest.

Back in September a furore around Pokemon Go happened around a suspiciously unfamiliar ‘hex nut’ shaped Pokemon that appeared at a community Pokemon Go event in Japan, named simply ‘???’. Nintendo’s official Pokemon Twitter account followed up with a short video announcing the new Pokemon as ‘Meltan’ – ending with a reference to the Let’s Go games and possibly hinting at a crossover event in the future.

    Pokemon Go update news

But one of the most awaited updates finally came to Pokemon Go earlier this summer – one that now lets players trade within the Pokemon Go app.

Along with the introduction of a Friends system, you’ll now be able benefit from having real-world pals, offering each other gifts, or making swaps on unwanted items.

Just making use of the trading system alone bags you free Candy for attracting the pocketable beasties, as well, of course giving you the opportunity to trade for rare and sought-after Pokemon.

However, it seems it’s a feature for more hardcore players to begin with – you’ll only be able to trade if you’re between levels 30 and 40, so you’re going to have to put some hours in first before becoming a wheeling-and-dealing Pokemon trader.

Recently, Pokemon Go also began to enter the latest generation with the addition of some Alolan Pokemon. It won’t be brand new Alolan Pokemon you’ll see, but instead Niantic has announced that players will see the Alolan forms of some Kanto Pokemon – recently the likes of Diglett and Geodude.

    Pokemon Go update news

When’s the next Pokemon Go event?

It’s been a bumper summer for Niantic, with a city-wide Safari Zone hitting Dortmund, Germany that then moved on to Chicago’s Lincoln Park.

Of course it’s not always possible to get to these locations, so Niantic has promised that players across the world will still have the chance to take part in its live events via a range of challenges and activities.

The last community day was held from November 30 to December 2. The date of the next one has not been announced yet.

    Pokémon Go update: what’s next?

Trainer Battles has just released, but we don’t know what is on the horizon next for Pokemon Go.

  • Sega Releases Another Superb Song That Will Feature In Team Sonic Racing

    Inspired by Sonic Adventure.

If you forgot Team Sonic Racing was due out in May next year because Crash Team Racing was recently announced at the 2018 Game Awards, Sega has issued a friendly reminder by uploading a new song from the title on its social channels.

Following the remix of ‘Market Street’ from Sonic Unleashed by Jun Senoue, Sega has now shared ‘Sand Road’ which takes inspiration from Sand Hill in Sonic Adventure. Once again it’s handled by Senoue along with Tee Lopes and Takeshi Taneda on bass from the Sonic Team. Lopes, in particular, is responsible for much of the music in Sonic Mania. This song seriously peaks around the 1:30 mark. Have a listen for yourself below:

  • Video: Ark: Survival Evolved Is A Blurry Mess On Nintendo Switch

On par with a Nintendo 64 title.

Digital Foundry has finally got around to taking a look at the Switch iteration of Ark: Survival Evolved and let’s just say the results aren’t pretty. The open-world survival game has never run well on the most powerful consoles and is poorly optimised. While the Unreal Engine might have proven itself on the Switch in the past, Ark’s use of it falls short.

Everything in the Switch version of the game has been seriously scaled back. Foilage is not present, the jungle floor looks incomplete, objects nearby are displayed at a low resolution, assets are reduced and textures are a mess throughout. Apparently, the visual quality is closer to a Nintendo 64 title. The blur is so bad and resolution so low, DF struggled to identify what techniques were used by the developer Studio Wildcard. When tested, resolutions were around 360p and 432p in docked mode and in some cases, DF noted resolutions of 304 x 170 – lower than a Sega Mega Drive game and also much blurrier.

  • Half Of All Switch Owners In The US Have Bought Zelda, Mario And Mario Kart

“That’s never happened in U.S. video game history”.

Following the conclusion of the 2018 Game Awards last week, Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aimé had a lot to say to IGN about the current state of the Switch. One of the more interesting facts he mentioned was how half of all Nintendo Switch owners in the US have bought Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

According to Reggie, these games attach to 50 percent of the hardware purchased:
