Celebrating Gaming, Community and What #MyXbox Can Mean for You

Xbox recently hosted a celebration of gaming with a #MyXbox holiday event at the Flagship Microsoft Store in New York City. I’m on the Xbox Community Team and had the pleasure of serving as event emcee and helped lead this gathering that, of course, included all of the usual holiday party standbys like games, music, food, and fun. It also provided the time and space for us to celebrate the importance of diversity and inclusion in our industry. It was a moment for myself and other members of the Black community of all ages to come together, much like any other community, through their love of gaming.

Now, more than ever, I am a firm believer in games as a great unifier. However, even as we all strive to be understanding, we still need to make a conscious effort to ensure everyone feels included. After all, we know that when everybody plays, we all win.

To that end, the team from Xbox welcomed actor, musician and avid Xbox gamer Trey Smith and Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club host Angela Yee to the Store to inspire and motivate younger gamers to get into games and bring their imaginations to life. Kids and their family members and mentors from the Harlem Children’s Zone, Royalty Project and Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club enjoyed playing some of the hottest games on Xbox and designing their own versions of the new Xbox Avatars.

In addition to giving away some great prizes, including Xbox One S consoles, games, and Xbox Game Pass memberships, other highlights included a photo booth and “Forza Horizon 4” stream with Trey Smith on the Xbox Ambassadors Mixer channel.

As a life-long Xbox fan, I cherish the opportunity to empower Xbox fans to help make the Xbox community not only the best on the planet, but also a place where everyone feels welcomed and included. If you are an Xbox fan and want to help celebrate the Xbox community and all the ways we make gaming for everyone, here are a few easy ways to jump in on the fun:

    1. Become an Xbox Ambassador – Xbox Ambassadors are the leaders of the Xbox community. Whether they are welcoming a new Xbox gamer into the community or playing with a new friend from a different country, they represent all the best parts of gaming – fun and togetherness. If making Xbox fun for everyone is something that interests you (and you are 17 years or older), become an Xbox Ambassador today!
    2. Create your Xbox Avatar – The new Xbox Avatars are expressive, creative and, most importantly, bring to life the community of fans they represent. They appear throughout the Xbox One dashboard, including on profiles, Gamerscore comparisons, community posts and more.
    3. Join Clubs on Xbox Live Clubs are groups on Xbox Live created by the Xbox community for people to play and socialize. You can join or create clubs that interest you, so that you can be sure to share the things you love with other like-minded gamers.
    4. Create an LFG – It’s easy to make new friends and play the games you love by creating an LFG post or responding to one created by someone else on Xbox Live. With LFG you can looking for gaming sessions that fit your style.

The wondrous look on the faces of young gamers at the event was proof of the power of gaming to make everyone, everywhere have fun together and celebrate this holiday. Everyone’s #MyXbox story is different and unique to them. So, get out there and show us how YOU Xbox this holiday.

This cheap Xbox Game Pass price promo is ending soon – don't miss this Christmas deal

A special Christmas promotion is still happening right now meaning there’s never been a better time to get a cheap Xbox Game Pass price for you or someone else this Christmas. So if you’ve been waiting for a super deal on a 12-month pass to the Netflix of gaming-style service you won’t want to miss this.

In both the US and UK we’ve dug out some drastic discounts on the download service what many are calling the ‘Netflix of games’ service. And because you download the games, rather than stream them, there’s no need to worry about connectivity issues once the game is downloaded (we are getting close to broadband being reliable for this one day soon though). Once they’re downloaded, you can play them as much as you want while your membership is active.

Microsoft hasn’t been shy with collecting lots of big name games for the list (Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has been added just this week!), but what has us especially keen on the service is the way the publisher puts its own big titles on the service on the day of release. So as soon as Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 came out, subscribers could enjoy them in full. And yes, Crackdown 3 will be available on day one when it comes out next year.

All this for essentially the cost of a single brand new Triple-A game today thanks to these huge reductions on a 12-month subscription. If you’re not sure what game to pick up for yourself or a loved one, this service is a great option given the huge variety on offer and will save you lots of money over buying many of the games you end up trying.

What games are on Xbox Game Pass?

There are some stunning titles available on the service already. Highlights we’ve just spotted include Doom, Quantum Break, Hellblade, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Rocket League, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Hitman, Halo: Master Chief Collection and many more.

Do I need Xbox Live Gold to use Xbox Game Pass

Short version: no. You’ll only need an Xbox Live Gold sub to play the online multiplayer side of Xbox Game Pass titles, just as you would if you bought them as individual games. On the plus side, you can also get some seriously cheap prices on the Xbox Live Gold subs today as shown below too.

If you’re still looking for more gift ideas before Christmas (maybe a cheap Xbox One X price?), be sure to check out our full range of cheap deals features. We’ve rounded up the best offers on a huge range of items including gaming consoles, TVs, laptops, mobile phones, broadband, digital TV subs, smart speakers and much more.

  • Review: Sundered: Eldritch Edition – An Enjoyable But Challenging Take On The Metroidvania Format

The Call of Cthulhu has been heard loud and clear.

The work of H.P. Lovecraft had a significant impact on culture in both the literary and broader world, leading to the creation of the cosmic horror genre which focuses on a certain kind of fear related to unknowable, dark deities. Sundered: Eldritch Edition aims to capture the heart of what made Lovecraft’s work so compelling, fusing those dark themes with a Metroidvania template that uses procedural generation. Though ambitious, Sundered doesn’t fully deliver on what it promises, but nonetheless still manages to be a wonderfully enjoyable game.

Sundered sees you playing as Eshe, a mysterious woman wandering in the desert who finds herself spirited away to an intricate cavern by an eldritch being called the Shining Trapezohedron, who very clearly is not good news. The Shining Trapezohedron asks Eshe for help in regaining its original power by collecting seven ‘Elder Shards’—dark crystals being guarded by terrifying abominations—while promising that she’ll receive that power herself if she agrees. As you explore the caverns, a narrative is slowly played out through a series of fragmented voiceovers which reveal the details of a war between the Escahton (the race of beings the Shining Trapezohedron belongs to) and the Valkyries (a group of humans with access to highly advanced technology), which resulted in both races being horribly disfigured and broken. As a human, Eshe has to make the choice between siding with the Eschaton, which represent ultimate power, or the humans, of which she is one.
