  • Street Fighter V Moving Away From Season Passes

Street Fighter V Moving Away From Season Passes

Fighting Fortune in Street Fighter V

When Capcom announced Kage, the even eviler Ryu, the other day at the conclusion of the Capcom Pro Tour, he was not sold in or used to promote a season pass, which was unusual for Street Fighter V. The game had been rolling its DLC characters out in bundles as well as individually since the first season after the game’s launch. Now, in what would have been season four, Capcom has decided to eschew the season pass model and only go with individual character sales.

The news comes from a Capcom tweet directly stating that there are currently no plans for a season pass for DLC and that all 2019 characters will be individually purchased through regular currency or fight money.

Kage can only be purchased individually with Fight Money or real currency. We currently have no plans to offer a Season Pass for the 2019 DLC characters. Stay tuned for information on future updates!

    — Street Fighter (@StreetFighter) December 20, 2018

While Capcom offered no reason, there could be any number of speculative rationales for why. It could be that season passes were not selling as well as Capcom had hoped, which would explain why Capcom released Sagat and G abruptly at EVO earlier this year. It might also be that Capcom is wrapping up work on Street Fighter V and is slowly ramping down the resources they’re putting into the characters, so they’d rather just release them individually than deal with complaints. Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono, when explaining the Cammy-like Decapre at the end of Street Fighter IV’s DLC, said that character modelers tend to move on to other projects as games wrap up, which might explain why they went for the Ryu-like Kage in SFV.

Ultimately, we won’t know until Capcom says what their future plans are, but it does seem like season passes won’t be a part of them, at least as far as Street Fighter V goes.

Street Fighter V is currently available on PlayStation 4 and PC.

  • Sonic Mania Adventures Gets A New Holiday Episode

Sonic Mania Adventures Gets A New Holiday Episode

During the run up to Sonic Mania Plus’ release, Sega produced and broadcasted a number of Sonic Mania shorts. Hearkening back to early animation vignettes, the wordless episodes were still entertaining and worth watching the full compilation. Today, Sega released a holiday special coda to the series, this time starring Mecha Sonic and a hereto unseen character in the Sonic Mania canon.

Check out the holiday episode below.

The episode takes place immediately after part 5, where Eggman and Metal Sonic crash into the forest after being defeated by Sonic and his friends. Might this be teasing further content for Sonic Mania one day, as well? Probably not directly, but it does say Sega has certainly not forgotten how successful their retro revival was, especially critically.

The animated Sonic Mania episodes may be short, but they’re a welcome breath of fresh air from some of Sonic’s, uh, other current media adventures.

  • Sims Creator Will Wright Teaches Game Design Via MasterClass

Sims Creator Will Wright Teaches Game Design Via MasterClass

Famed game developer Will Wright is teaching a massive class on games – via MasterClass. In his class, Wright covers a slew of game design topics, like generating new concepts, creating game mechanics, player psychology, and mental modeling. Best known for his work creating SimCity and The Sims, Wright has had a celebrated career in game development.

Enrollment for the class is $90 for lifetime access or $180 per year for the All-Access Pass, which grants unlimited access to all new and existing classes.

“I think that game design can represent a lot of learning that you can bring back into other design fields,” said Wright. “I wanted to teach a MasterClass as a way of relaying some of the things I learned over the years and inspiring the next generation of designers. We’re on the cusp of some really interesting technology but good game design is essentially about understanding the player.”

Wright was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award the 2001 Game Developers Choice Awards and inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 2002. Check out the video below and let Wright tell you about the class!

  • 'Raimi Suit' Added To Spider-Man As A Free Holiday Gift From Insomniac

'Raimi Suit' Added To Spider-Man As A Free Holiday Gift From Insomniac

Insomniac Games just delivered a great holiday gift for Spider-Man fans. The suit worn by Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film trilogy is available today as a free download in Spider-Man. Fans were dismayed that this popular suit wasn’t included in the core game, and again voiced frustration over it not appearing in any of The City That Never Sleeps downloadable content.

We don’t know if there were any licensing hurdles that prevented it from being released earlier, or if Insomniac just wanted to give it away free as a holiday gift, but we can all be thankful that it’s finally here and we no longer need to see gifs of Tobey Maguire crying on Twitter.

Wait… Hold that thought. Why isn’t the black Raimi suit in the game yet? INSOMNIAC!

  • Sonic Mania's Animated Shorts Continue with Special Festive Episode

    Gotta go feast.

The animated intro for Sonic Mania was such a hit with fans that a batch of short cartoons was released, collectively known as Sonic Mania Adventures. The fifth episode seemingly concluded the spin-off story, but it turns out SEGA had one more chapter up its sleeve. Embedded above, the sixth episode has a decidedly Christmassy theme.

These cartoons are all a bit twee, but they’re pretty amusing nonetheless, and well worth a watch if you’re a fan of the blue blur. What do you think of Sonic Mania Adventures, and its surprise Christmas episode? Try not to get too spiky in the comments below.
