  • Was Halo: The Master Chief Collection Considered for PS4?

Franchise director weighs in on wild rumour.

Microsoft’s seemingly becoming more platform agnostic, with its software and services now exploring devices outside of the Xbox ecosystem. The thought of Halo coming to the PlayStation 4 is not as wild as it once was, then – although it does, at first blush, still seem pretty crazy. Speaking on a recent episode of the Sacred Symbols podcast, however, ex-IGN editor Colin Moriarty reckons that a port of the Master Chief Collection was, at one point, being considered for Sony’s system.

“I have it on good authority that Master Chief Collection was being talked about on PS4 years ago,” he said in a recent episode, which you can listen to through here. “Like, I have that on great authority.”

  • Destiny 2’s Stadia Playerbase Is Separate From PC, Bungie Confirms

Destiny 2’s Stadia Playerbase Is Separate From PC, Bungie Confirms

In its latest “This Week at Bungie” blog post, the Destiny 2 developer posted a short FAQ answering a number of questions players had about the game’s move from Battle.net to Steam, the game coming Stadia, and the new cross-save feature, clarifying some key points about what players can expect on September 17 when these features hit alongside the newly-announced Shadowkeep expansion.

For many, the most important question answered is how the new Stadia version of the game will (or in this case, won’t) work with other platforms. Bungie has confirmed the Stadia version of the game will have its own playerbase and will not share players with the PC. To be clear, the Stadia version will still support cross-save, which means players will still be able to log into the Stadia version with your now-universal Destiny 2 account and earn more gear and power for your character. But though many expected the Stadia and PC versions of the game to have the same playerbase, Stadia and PC players won’t be able to play with each other.

Another important thing to consider: expansions. The new free-to-play version of Destiny 2, New Light, will let players explore every current locale the game has to offer, hop into all the matchmade multiplayer playlists, and access some of the regular updates to the game for free. However, the Forsaken campaign, exotic quests, and post year-one raids will have to be purchased. What’s more, expansion content will have to purchased individually for each version, which is a bummer for cross-players and raises at least one question: Once you get an exotic quest, will you be able to complete it on a platform on which you don’t have the expansion content?

You won’t be able to merge accounts on different platforms, either, so if you’ve played the game on multiple platforms, you may have to choose one account to play on going forward. However, for those moving from Battle.net to Steam, there will a one-time transfer option to take everything with you as you start playing on Steam.

There are still more questions to answer, and Bungie will continue updating this new FAQ throughout the next few months. If you have questions about what’s going on this fall, check out the full FAQ.

  • Tom Nook Will Be Reinvesting Back Into The Local Island Community In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

    About time!

If you had your doubts about Tom Nook in the past, the first-look at Animal Crossing: New Horizons earlier this week probably didn’t change your opinion about him.

This time around, he’s offering players a deserted island lifestyle package and is selling it as if it’s the opportunity of a lifetime while demanding 49,800 Bells to set up a tent. Quite frankly, we’re just not convinced. Luckily for Nook, New Horizon’s director Aya Kyogoku and producer Hisashi Nogami were willing to defend his actions during an interview with IGN at E3 2019.

  • Review: Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda – A Beat-Based Wonder

    Striking a chord.

From the opening menu that uses not the rousing Zelda overworld music but the understated theme from Ocarina of Time‘s title screen, you know you’re about to go on a special journey. Cadence of Hyrule (we won’t bother with its ludicrously long official moniker) takes the music we all know and love and remixes it with the gameplay itself, sewing those tunes into the fabric of Hyrule in a way that feels totally natural, but also energetic and fresh.

Music has always been an integral part of the series. Mute the volume while you’re playing the original Legend of Zelda on NES and the difference Koji Kondo’s overworld theme makes is immediately apparent. That game, like many 8-bit classics, relied on music to stir the player and make their adventure feel ‘epic’ in a way the visuals simply weren’t capable of. As time and technology advanced, those themes became less necessary – part of the reason why the Hyrule of Breath of the Wild has only incidental motifs and a more ambient soundtrack. The landscape itself and the wind through the grass tell the story nowadays; a romping overworld tune would get on your nerves after a few hours. What Brace Yourself Games does by fusing the kingdom of Hyrule with gameplay from its hit indie game Crypt of the NecroDancer is make those treasured melodies vital once again.
