Coming out of this year’s E3, there’s renewed excitement for CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077. After a cool new trailer, that Keanu Reeves moment, and glowing impressions from a private gameplay demonstration, the hype has once again reached boiling point. Of course, fans are anxious to see this gameplay footage for themselves, and we now know a rough idea of when to expect it.
According to the community lead on the game, Marcin Momot, the gameplay will finally be made public during PAX West. This event takes place between 30th August and 2nd September. We’re not sure precisely when Cyberpunk will be shown off within that timeframe, but at least we know more or less when it’s happening.

2D console wars.
Things have definitely changed since the last time we visited the land of Gamindustri (yes, that’s really what the world is called). For one thing, everything is now in 2D which, according to the locals, is the height of modern gaming technology. Super Neptunia RPG is a spin-off from the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, a super cute JRPG series that parodies the video game industry and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Our energetic purple haired protagonist, Neptune, has unfortunately lost her memories… again. But she’s not the type to let a little something like that get her down, and it’s not long before she gets chatting to a shady organisation, going by the name of Bombyx Mori. They give you a job to keep you busy while you await the return of your memories, and so begins your life as a humble tax collector.

One of the things I love most about BitSummit – the yearly Kyoto-based indie games showcase – is that it’s a very egalitarian-feeling event. One booth may have a solo dev from Scandinavia demoing his or her very first project, the next may be showing off Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and be manned by the legendary Koji Igarashi himself. Walking around the show floor you’ll see this kind of juxtaposition repeatedly: there’s no barrier between the industry newcomers and the veterans – and if you spot the likes of Swery, Shuhei Yoshida or Keita Takahashi, you can just say hello.

E3 is the big opportunity for developers to show off a year’s worth of work, but every year some of the biggest surprises are what wasn’t at the show. E3 2019 was huge for some of the most anticipated games coming in 2019 and 2020, but with Sony abstaining from this year’s conference we were denied the further details we’ve been craving since last year’s reveals. But Sony’s games weren’t the only ones that were MIA – here, we’ve collected every big game we could think of that was missing from this year’s lineup.

During E3 last week it was confirmed that the long-in-development crowdfunded game Shenmue III will release on PC as an exclusive to the Epic Games Store at launch.
Some people got upset about this because the studio, Ys Net, had originally said the game would be available on Steam. The game is still coming to Steam, but not until 12 months after its release on the Epic Games Store. Now, developer Ys Net has responded to the outcry, but only in a preliminary way.
In a post to the game’s Kickstarter page, Ys Net said it hears the concerns of fans. Representatives from the studio were in Los Angeles for E3 where they showing off the game, but when they return to home base they’ll look into how to “find a way forward” as it relates to explaining to fans that their faith in the studio can be upheld.
“We want to make sure that the Backers are aware that we are listening to their concerns,” reads a line from the update. “We kindly ask all our fans to have some patience, we are currently at E3 demoing the game and need to get back to our respective offices to assess the situation and together find a way forward to justify the trust you placed in us.”
In 2015, more than 69,000 people contributed $6.3 million to fund the development of Shenmue III on Kickstarter. Saints Row publisher Deep Silver later came aboard as a publisher.
Shenmue III was among the titles that Epic announced as being timed-exclusives for the Epic Games Store. Another title was Untitled Goose Game from Australian developer House House. The studio said Epic made an offer that gave them a unique sense of stability in an industry where that is far from a guarantee.
Shenmue III is also coming to PlayStation 4. The Shenmue III release date is set for November 19. A new trailer was released during E3; check it out in the video embed above.

Like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt’s ambitious upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has multiple endings. Quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz confirmed this in an interview with YongYea at E3 2019.
The Witcher 3 had three major endings. Which one you arrive at depends on the choices you make during the campaign. Tomaszkiewicz did not say how many endings Cyberpunk 2077 will have apart from confirming there will be multiple ways the story can end.
Also in the interview, Tomaszkiewicz confirms that players can go through the entire campaign without using any augmentations besides the two that are automatically assigned to you during the Prologue. The rest of the augmentations are optional.
The developer also confirmed that CD Projekt Red is considering adding a Photo Mode, though it is “hard to tell” if it will happen. CD Projekt Red is considering it “seriously,” Tomaszkiewicz said. This is a big difference from September 2018 when the developers said they were planning for Cyberpunk 2077 to have a Photo Mode.
Tomaszkiewicz added that the studio is also not committing to a level cap for Cyberpunk 2077 just yet.
According to CD Projekt Red founder Marcin Iwinski, the studio is now in the polishing phase of development for Cyberpunk 2077. This is the most challenging part of the development process, Iwinski said, adding that he expects the team to be able to deliver “some amazing bells and whistles graphically” when the process is finished.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches on April 16, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For more on the game–which features Keanu Reeves in a lead role–check out GameSpot’s preview of the new gameplay CD Projekt Red demoed at the show, as well as a look at its story.

“Why us? Why Winnipeg? There’s so many theories…” A full-length official trailer has debuted for an indie documentary titled Phantom of Winnipeg, an obscure, fascinating look at an odd phenomenon. The doc film tells the story of how Brian De Palma’s cult favorite musical Phantom of the Paradise (first released in 1974) became a local sensation in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. “Phantom of the Paradise proved hugely popular among young Winnipeggers, whose enthusiasm for the movie reportedly kept it playing at the city’s Garrick Cinema for 18 straight weeks… [Years later] in 2005, the city celebrated the movie with a festival, ‘Phantompalooza‘, which featured appearances by cast members Gerrit Graham and the late William Finley.” The film originally flopped at the box office 45 years ago, but has clearly found some fans over time. ›››

“A man can only see so much darkness before he goes blind…” RLJE Films has released an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Into The Ashes, the latest from filmmaker Aaron Harvey (Catch .44, The Neighbor). Described as reminiscent of “hard-boiled action/thrillers from the ’70s/’80s”, Into The Ashes is about an ex-con trying to settle down in rural Alabama who believes he has escaped his violent past, only to find his old crew hasn’t forgotten about him or the money he stole. And they don’t want to let him get away. Sounds a lot like every other gritty rural crime thriller, and it looks like every other one, too. Starring Luke Grimes as Nick, along with Frank Grillo, Marguerite Moreau, Robert Taylor, James Badge Dale, Brady Smith, Andrea Frankle, Rob Mello, Scott Peat, David Maldonado, David Cade, and Jeff Pope. The best part of this is Grillo – always great to see him in any film. Some rad music in the trailer, too. ›››
