Coming to You in Full Color and Cine-Sound: The Cuphead Show!

    Hi, everyone!

Chad Moldenhauer from Studio MDHR coming to you with an announcement so surreal I can honestly say I never thought I’d be making it… Cuphead will be coming to life as an original Netflix series, “The Cuphead Show!” Inspired by the same 1930s animated classics that captured Jared and my imagination growing up, with a modern twist all its own, this show will follow the many misadventures of Cuphead, Mugman, and the other residents of the wondrous Inkwell Isles. We’re beyond thrilled that the show will be in the talented team at Netflix Animation as they reimagine our little animated adventure for an entirely new audience.

As you might know, Jared and I grew up on a steady diet of hand-animated classics – some of our favourite memories together are intertwined with early Disney, Ub Iwerks, and Fletcher Brothers. These zany, more-than-a-little eerie cartoons are a huge part of the reason Cuphead came to exist. In early prototype testing of the game that would become Cuphead, we were experimenting with many different natural styles ranging from pencil crayon drawings to a simple crayon aesthetic.

Ultimately, though, it’s these timeless classics that kept sticking out in our mind, and calling us back to the idea of bringing an interactive experience to life in a way that we hadn’t seen before. So all these years later, the thought of our game becoming a cartoon of its own is surreal and wonderful to say the least. And while it might sound sappy to say so, we can’t thank the Xbox community enough for helping us get here. Your support and love for this world and its characters has shone bright from day one.

Rest assured, though – we won’t be animating the series ourselves. If we were, I have a feeling it might never get finished! And besides, we can’t wait to bring you more playable Cuphead goodness in the form of our upcoming DLC expansion, The Delicious Last Course, due out in 2020. With that said, we’ve been so blown away by the early looks we’ve seen at the series from the team over at Netflix Animation, and are proud to say that they’re carrying on the hand-animated tradition. While they will be using digital tools, they will be bringing things to life by hand, and will be taking plenty of inspiration from the same wacky world that had us starry-eyed all those years ago. We think their vision of Cuphead and Mugman’s world and the characters within it will add  new depth and nuance to these characters, and are excited to hear what you think when the time comes!

Speaking of which: while we don’t have anything to announce today about a release date, definitely stay tuned to @CupheadShow on Twitter for all the details on this next exciting step in Cuphead and Mugman’s journey. As in the game, I have a feeling that a brawl is surely brewing!

  • Shenmue III Backers Irate as Pre-Order Bonuses Come at Extra Cost

    Season Pass also sold separately.

Regardless of whether it will live up to expectations or not, Shenmue III is at long last beginning to look like a finished product, which should be cause for celebration. Unfortunately, the long awaited sequel has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons of late – mostly due to developer Ys Net accepting a window of timed exclusivity for the Epic Games Store release.

None of this drama really affects the PlayStation 4 edition, but one thing that will are the lack of pre-order bonuses for Kickstarter backers. If you pre-order the game through participating retail outlets right now, you’ll be guaranteed the Kenpogi Training Outfit, ‘Blazing Kick’ Advanced Technique Scroll, and Peking Power Starter Pack.

  • Anticipated Sequel Psychonauts 2 Delayed to 2020

    All change.

It’s all change at developer Double Fine: the studio is now part of Microsoft’s first-party portfolio and Psychonauts 2 has been delayed. The anticipated sequel – which was originally due out in 2019 – will now deploy in 2020. Don’t worry about the Xbox acquisition, though – it’ll still launch on the PlayStation 4, as originally planned.

“We’re now targeting next year for release,” the studio said as part of an update on crowd funding website Fig. “We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand!”

  • Forager Scrounges Up a Physical Retail Release on PS4 Later This Year

    Digital coming sooner.

For those out of the loop, Forager is a well-liked indie title that’s making its way to PlayStation 4. The game is an addictive mix of looting, crafting, adventuring, and puzzle solving as you explore an ever expanding map. It’s down for a digital release on 30th July, but if you prefer physical copies, we have some good news.

The cute little title is getting a retail release in mid-September; 10th for North America and 13th for Europe. The disc version of the game, which will cost $29.99, comes packed with an exclusive poster and set of stickers. With a fairly big time difference between the digital and physical launches, we imagine many will plump for the former, but it’s nice to have the option.

    The race is on.

Who doesn’t like a free dynamic PlayStation 4 theme? We’ve had a few of them lately, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is the next in line for complimentary dashboard decorations. The new theme, named ‘The Race Is On’, is available to download now in both North America and Europe.

It plays the theme music from the Beenox remake, and displays an animated version of the kart racer’s key art. It’s not going to blow your socks off, but if you can’t get enough CTR, this will brighten up your PS4 menus for free.

  • Feature: Best PlayStation Music of June 2019

    The rut deepens.

While June 2019 may have the fewest entries in a given month since we started doing this series, the silver lining is that the two entries in question are really good. One is one of the best scores from one of our favourite composers in the industry and the other is something wholly different: a great score from a game this author never played, but still loved the music from. Let’s jump in!

    Luna

A delightful and relaxing VR title from Funomena, Luna also happens to sport a score from Austin Wintory, easily one of our favorite game composers — period. So, with that being said, the fact that Luna is one of my favorites of his is a pretty big statement. The game’s emphasis on and utilisation of game music is baked in from the start. This intertwining of mechanics and music allows the score to hit home even more effectively than would be normally expected, heightening an already wonderful game even further.
