  • Watch Dogs Legion Is Crowdsourcing Music From Fans Via Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Media Company

Ubisoft has once again partnered with actor Joseph Gordon Levitt’s HitRecord studio for a unique promotion around user-generated content, this time for Watch Dogs Legion. As part of the collaboration, Ubisoft is looking to the community to create music for the open-world game.

HitRecord is asking the community to create 10 songs for Watch Dogs Legion which will play in the game on radio stations and generally throughout the game’s setting in London. As with other HitRecord projects, the songs are likely to be made collaboratively. That is, someone could write a bass line, another person could come up with guitar parts, someone else might lay down the drum beat. Other people can work together on lyrics and overall levels of polish. These are just a few examples; the possibilities, as you can imagine, are vast.

In all cases, HitRecord will pay $2,000 per song, which will be split among the people who contributed to it, and they’ll also have their names put into the game’s credits. People whose work is not selected for Watch Dogs Legion receive no payment.

HitRecord will review all final Watch Dogs Legion musical pieces, and at that time it will also ensure each artist is properly accounted for. After that, HitRecord will made a decision about how much money each contributor should receive for their part in creating the song. This information will be posted to HitRecord’s public site for everyone to see as part of what’s called the “Payment Proposal.” There is then a two-week period when people in the community can comment on the Payment Proposal, and then HitRecord will make its final decision; the first round of payments will go out for creators in January 2020.

More information about payment is available on HitRecord’s website by searching for Watch Dogs Legion here. You can sign up to create music for Watch Dogs Legion here on HitRecord.

HitRecord is looking for songs in the rock, hip hop, electronica, metal, and punk genres, and Ubisoft is seemingly looking for songs that are in some way related to London.

Some people, including game designer Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone, John Wick Hex) are speaking out against this partnership. Specifically, Bithell said he takes issue with the use of “spec work,” which is basically labor done for free with the hope of future payment.

“This sucks. Pay people for their labour. Stop exploiting fans and hobbyists, while devaluing the work of those with the gall to actually expect consistent payment for work done. Do better Ubi, we’re counting on you,” Bithell said.

Disgusting. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a union contract yet he’s peddling spec work for a billion dollar company. The game industry exploits our passion to pay unlivable wages, this is the next logical step. Soliciting unpaid labor for a product that will make millions. #NoSpec pic.twitter.com/U2hKS69Hot

HitRecord previously partnered with Ubisoft for a similar user-generated content program for Beyond Good & Evil 2. People also voiced their concerns about that “spec work,” and Gordon-Levitt responded by saying the controversy was due in part to people not understanding how HitRecord works.

“Honestly, this concern was sorta painful to hear,” he said in a post on Medium. “It’s not at all how I think of our community’s creative process. I do think that part of this disconnect is simple misinformation.”

Watch Dogs Legion launches in March 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It is a super-ambitious game due in part to the main hook that you can control basically anyone in the game. Check out the video embedded above to learn more.

First ‘Hunting at the Manor’ Teaser Trailer for Craig Zobel’s ‘The Hunt’

    The Hunt Teaser Trailer

“Only designated people may be hunted at the manor.” Universal has unveiled a teaser for the “mysterious social thriller” titled The Hunt, the latest film from clever filmmaker Craig Zobel (of Compliance, Z for Zachariah). This project has been kept secret for a while, even while in production, but now they’ve revealed what it’s about. There’s a manor where “elites” go to hunt other humans for sport (another spin on The Most Dangerous Game). This time, one of the 12 people being hunted knows the game better than the hunters, and starts to fight back. Betty Gilpin stars as Crystal, with an ensemble cast including Ike Barinholtz, Emma Roberts, Justin Hartley, Glenn Howerton, Amy Madigan, Macon Blair, Steve Coulter, and Hilary Swank. This teaser doesn’t have much real footage, more of an in-universe viral teaser to shock us into remembering this while we wait for a full trailer to arrive. So did it get your attention? Watch: Cute Animated Short Film ‘Catastrophe’ About an Innocent Cat

    Catastrophe Short Film

“Miauw!” Time for something fun. Catastrophe (which an emphasis on the “Cat” part of the word) is an animated short film that runs just over two minutes. Written and directed by Dutch filmmaker Jamille van Wijngaarden, this is her first animated short, after working in live-action before this. Catastrophe tells the story of “an orange cat whose owner has only one request: Don’t kill the bird. The unfortunate mess that results is a visual playground of color, sound, and humor that starts and ends before you can fully process what you’ve just witnessed.” This has been playing at film festivals for years, but has just arrived online for everyone to enjoy – premiered by Vimeo Staff Picks. Featuring music composed by Hans Nieuwenhuijsen. It’s a funny, cute, easy-to-watch short film that will leave you with a smile. Just the way a good short should. ›››

  • PS Vita’s Not Quite Done Yet, Despite Reports to the Contrary

    Vitality.

Sony’s largely called time on the PlayStation Vita, with hardware and cartridge production mostly over. There are still a surprising number of titles being published globally on the PlayStation Store, however, but there had been some speculation overnight that support may be coming to an abrupt end. Jack of All Controllers picked up on a Kickstarter post by Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story developer Suzaku, which seemed to imply that the Japanese giant had set a date for final software submissions.

Fortunately, prevalent PS Vita publishers like Ratalaika Games and Cowcat Games have since commented that they’re not aware of any cut-offs, and haven’t received any communication from the platform holder on the matter. We’re going to chalk this down to a misunderstanding for now – although there is every opportunity that the Japanese giant could still pull the plug at any moment. For now, the portable lives on – just about.

  • Gearbox Is Teasing A ‘Celebration Of Togetherness’ For Next Week

Gearbox Is Teasing A ‘Celebration Of Togetherness’ For Next Week

Gearbox has posted an open invitation for what it’s calling a “Celebration of Togetherness” event for next week, which could be hinting at the announcement of crossplay.

The company posted the announcement with a wedding invitation-like image, announcing the event would be on borderlands.com at 7 a.m. Pacific Time on July 16.

Gearbox CEO also tweet another obscure teaser about the event. “We’d be honored for you to take this moment to celebrate our togetherness and we anticipate that what we have prepared for you can create a shared moment of happiness, joy and wonder,” he wrote.

Considering its name and Pitchford’s message, it’s possible the “event” will include the announcement of crossplay for the RPG shooter. Which would be great news, as it would take a bit of the edge off it being an Epic Games Store exclusive and would hopefully let console and PC players work through Borderlands 3’s meaty, 35-hourish campaign together.

If that’s not the case, the announcement could be another major feature, which means this is likely worth keeping an eye on. We’ll find out next Tuesday.

  • Bungie Explains How Destiny 2: Shadowkeep’s New Finishing Moves Work

Bungie Explains How Destiny 2: Shadowkeep’s New Finishing Moves Work

One of the many features Bungie highlighted in its recent vi-doc unveiling Destiny 2’s Shadowkeep expansion was finishing moves. The company didn’t totally explain how these attacks would work then.

Speaking with Polygon recently, however, Destiny 2 general manager Mark Noseworthy and franchise director Luke Smith outlined how the feature will work. “When enemies get below a certain health threshold, they’re going to have an indicator that means they can be finished,” Smith told Polygon. Players will be somewhat exposed during these animations, which can be customized with cosmetic items much like emotes (though Smith notes players will only be able to equip one a time at launch, but multi-equip and a randomizer are in the works for post-launch).

The reward for pulling these moves off (beyond scoring a quick kill and some energy towards your super ability) can change depending on which mods you have equipped on your armor; Smith cited a mod that would generate ammo for your fireteam whenever you pull off a finisher. This, Smith said, could lead to new approaches to combat as fireteams coordinate which members finish off which enemies when.

The interview mentions the feature is still in development, however, and the intricacies of how it works could change before launch. For more on Shadowkeep, learn more about how the arrival of the expansion also means cross-save across platforms, even though Stadia and PC players will be in their own separate player pools.
