  • Bigben Interactive Snaps Up Greedfall Developer Spiders

Makes a change from Microsoft, THQ Nordic.

Bigben Interactive has acquired Greedfall developer Spiders for an undisclosed fee. The French studio is perhaps best known for titles such as Bound by Flame and The Technomancer, but its new owner says it will leverage the unit to “increase its know-how in the development of video games in the AA strategic segment”.

With so many independent teams getting snapped up by the likes of Microsoft and THQ Nordic of late, the publisher probably felt the need to swoop now. Fascinatingly, its most recent titles have all been published by Focus Home Interactive, so this will represent a shift for the RPG specialists. “We look forward to joining the Bigben group,” a freshly minted co-founder Jehanne Rousseau said.

  • PS Vita Firmware Update 3.71 Keeps Handheld Alive

    Not dead yet.

Sony’s still got the PlayStation Vita on life support, despite it ceasing to manufacture the handheld. The platform holder has released firmware update v3.71 for the system today, which fixes an exploit named Trinity currently being leveraged for homebrew. According to the modding scene, it’s still currently possible to spoof the system software in order to connect to the PlayStation Network, but that’s an issue which is likely to be plugged.

For those of you using the handheld as it was intended, you’re not going to notice any changes with this firmware update – as you’d perhaps expect. It’ll be interesting to see how long the company continues this battle with hackers – presumably it’ll have to move on eventually.

  • Weirdness: Death Stranding Scene Stolen in Brazilian Perfume Ad

    Eau de Kojima.

Hideo Kojima’s influence reaches far and wide, but we can’t say we expected Death Stranding to be aped in a Brazilian perfume commercial. That’s exactly what appears to have happened in this O Boticário ad, however, as the kaiju from one of the title’s trailers towers over an immaculately scented actor.

The similarities between the two scenes make this look like an homage at best and an outright rip-off at worst, but it just goes to show the kind of impact the PlayStation 4 exclusive is already having on popular culture. Maybe the Metal Gear maker will be sent a crate of the cosmetic for his troubles – he tends to get free gifts off everyone else.

  • Marvel’s Iron Man VR Looks Stark in PSVR Gameplay Footage

    Tony on PlayStation.

Marvel’s Iron Man VR is looking really rather impressive. The upcoming PlayStation VR exclusive – which is being published by Sony and developed by Camouflaj – sees you take control of the titular Avenger in a brand new first-person campaign controlled using the PS Move wands. In this gameplay footage – which starts at 1:06 in the embedded stream – we can see how intuitive Tony Stark is to pilot, as you steer using each motion controller independently.

The thing that’s particularly impressive about this footage is how good the tracking appears to be. A lot of PSVR games are designed around the player facing the camera directly, but here the headset wearer turns completely away from the setup and the detection doesn’t flinch. We’re not sure what kind of black magic Camouflaj is employing here, but it has been working on the title for a number of years, and it shows.

  • Ridiculous Red Dead Redempion 2 Rumour Says Alien DLC Is Incoming, Red Dead Remake Is Real

    Dutch didn’t plan for this.

Another week, another frankly ridiculous Rockstar rumour. When it’s not Grand Theft Auto 6 “leaks”, it’s crazy Red Dead Redemption 2 DLC theories, and this latest one is a corker. Coming straight outta Reddit, a poster claims that they know an environmental artist over at Rockstar, who’s apparently working an absurd-sounding Red Dead Redemption 2 story DLC.

  • How Satoru Iwata Saved Earthbound from Development Hell

To this day, Earthbound is a beloved classic that belongs in any “Best RPGs of all time” list – but without help from the late Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, it might have never been finished.

Iwata-san, a book recently published in Japan by Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi’s company Hobonichi, tells the story of Satoru Iwata’s life, mostly through his own words. While he passed away on July 11 in 2015, the book is a rearrangement of interviews with Iwata that were published on Itoi’s website Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shimbun. The book also includes new interviews with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi on how they remember Iwata.
