  • New Death Stranding Trailer Takes a Look at Heartman

    “I’m already dead”.

Sony and Kojima Productions have released a new Death Stranding trailer — a ‘character spotlight’ for Heartman, one of the game’s main cast members. Modelled after film director Nicolas Winding Refn, Heartman looks like he’ll be something of a confidant to protagonist Sam. The trailer itself actually gives us a little more insight into the kind of cutscene direction that we can expect to see in Death Stranding.

At just over two minutes, there’s potentially a lot to unpack here — as you’d expect of Kojima — but every video so far has done something to pique our interest, and this one’s no different. Death Stranding is still due to release on the 8th November, 2019.

  • Latest Doom Releases To Get Update Removing BethesdaNet Login Requirement

Latest Doom Releases To Get Update Removing BethesdaNet Login Requirement

Yesterday saw the surprise release of the first three Doom games on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch, was is a good thing! However, players quickly reported that they had to log into Bethesda proprietary account system, BethesdaNet (which requires an internet connection) to play the games at all. Bethesda is working to remedy that soon, however.

The most recent versions of Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 require a one-time login and connection to play, but it’s still an unnecessary hurdle to have to go through. This is especially bothersome on Switch, where, due to the system’s portability, players might have downloaded the game at one time while hooked up to Wi-Fi, then started it up for the first time somewhere without an online connection.

Bethesda is aware of the issue, which was not intentional. “The BethesdaNet login requirement was included for the Slayers Club, to reward members for playing the classic DOOM games,” the company said on Twitter. “The login should be optional, and we are working on changing the requirement to optional now.”

The company plans to release a fix in the near future. However, if you’ve just downloaded the games, make sure to update them after the fix is deployed, or log into BethesdaNet after launching the games, to make sure you can play them offline for now.

What To Watch This Weekend: Fortnite, Overwatch, And Company Of Heroes 2

The biggest game in the world right now (Fortnite) is having its World Cup this weekend, which means the game will be further out ahead of just about any game on Twitch than it usually is. There’s more to the event than straight competition, however, so make sure to keep up with it throughout the weekend. (Stream) Of course, there are other events going on this weekend, in case that doesn’t do it for you. Here’s what’s on tap.

The Overwatch League enters its fourth stage this weekend which means we only have five more weekends until the big playoffs. (Stream / Schedule)

League of Legends‘ various leagues continue unabated this week, so get ready for tons of matches across multiple regions. (Stream and Schedule)

The Brawlhalla Summer Championships are upon us! The American and European regions have separate events, but you can thankfully watch all the action on a single stream. (Stream)

The Dota 2 scene is having its regular Summit tournament while we wait for The International, which means the teams aren’t aren’t as skilled, but it should still be a good time! (Stream)

The fighting game scene is on keeping low-key while it waits for Evo next week, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be some events; two Super Smash Bros. events are on this weekend. First, there’s Smash Factor 8 in San Andrés Cholula, Mexico (Stream 1 / Stream 2 / Stream 3) and Thunder Smash in Los Angeles, California. (Stream)

On the Tekken 7 and Soulcalibur VI side of things, the World Showdown of Esports (that’s WSOE to you, bud!) is having events for both of these games over the weekend. The action starts at 12 p.m. today. (Stream)

We also have a Company of Heroes 2 Master Cup, in which teams of two take each other on in the real-time strategy game. The tournament will take across several streams, so the best way to catch the action is the check the game’s directory on Twitch. Matches begin at 9 a.m. Central.

Rainbow Six Siege is having a minor event in the ESL Premiership Summer event for the year, though we only have a couple of matches left at this point. (Stream)

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive scene is hosting two more minor events in Berline, this time for the Asia and CIS regions to accompanying last week’s minors for the Americas and Europe regions. (Stream)

That’s it for this weekend! Let us know if we missed an event, of if there’s a scene you’d like us to cover, in the comments.

  • Nintendo Replaces Fire Emblem Three Houses Protagonist Voice Actor Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Nintendo Replaces Fire Emblem Three Houses Protagonist Voice Actor Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Update: Nintendo has sent a statement to Game Informer confirming that they are indeed replacing Niosi in Three Houses with an update.

“After assessing the situation, we decided to re-record the character’s voiceovers in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Heroes with another actor. The new voiceovers will be included in a future patch.”

The original story is as follows:

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is out today and, by our account, seems to be one of the best the series has ever produced. Among other options, the western version allows players to use the original Japanese language track in addition to an English dub, which means all the characters obviously got new actors in English. Last week, Nintendo let the voice actors behind the game’s dub reveal their voice roles and, when people found out who was playing the male protagonist Byleth, it was not long until fans familiar with the actor voiced their concerns. He was even included as part of a Fire Emblem Heroes event, the mobile Fire Emblem game that brings in characters from the entire series.

Today, fans have discovered that the actor had been removed from the mobile game, possibly spurring a change in voice for Three Houses down the line.

The Three Houses actor, Chris Niosi, has been in a number of anime and video game dubs over the years, such as Octopath Traveler, Tales of Zestiria, and western cartoons like O.K. KO. Niosi has had multiple allegations of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault over the years, such as former partners accusing Niosi of claiming he had “implied permission” to do what he wanted with them. After the allegations resurfaced due to his Three Houses casting, Niosi posted a long treatise on his professional tumblr account, confirming the accusations.

Before these accusations were widely known, Nintendo had revealed that Byleth would be coming to the mobile title Fire Emblem Heroes and included a trailer of the character with a voice credited to Niosi. Soon after, the credit disappeared from the character page, and a new trailer was uploaded with re-recorded lines and a credit given to Zach Aguilar. Aguilar is probably best known for playing the cyborg Genos in the anime One Punch Man.

The very quick change in voice actors for Heroes is leading fans to think Nintendo will try to do the same for Three Houses. As the game is already out today, it appears Niosi is in the title regardless, but it would not be the first time an entire voice actor has been replaced in a video game. Though certainly not for controversy reasons, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage was replaced entirely in Destiny by Nolan North, including re-recording Dinklage’s original lines. Such a thing is definitely possible, though it is merely a question of whether Nintendo feels it is worth it.

We have reached out to Nintendo for comment but did not receive response as of publishing time.

  • Free Joy-Con Drift Repairs Extended To Latin America

    Fixing the problem.

After a class action lawsuit was filed against Nintendo of America for its Switch Joy-Con “drifting” issues last week, the video game giant reportedly instructed support service representatives within this region to repair the controllers for free and refund customers who had previously paid.

A day later, we found out this free fix didn’t necessarily apply to certain regions outside of North America. Now, though, there’s a minor update for Latin America. It’s been confirmed by a Nintendo repair shop located in Costa Rica, that all Switch users in Latin America with faulty Joy-Con are able to get free repairs.
