  • Yes, Killstreaks Are Back in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

    Killing it.

If you’ve ever engaged in a game of Call of Duty multiplayer, you’ll have heard about killstreaks at some point. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare introduced the system in its revolutionary online battles, and the mechanic has been toyed with many times since. A killstreak is when you defeat a certain number of players in a row without dying yourself, unlocking various tactical advantages or powerful weapons as a result. For years, scorestreaks have taken their place to encourage players to stick to the objective in certain modes.

However, with this year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward is bringing back the classic killstreak. While there isn’t much information available yet, it sounds like they’re going to work similarly to the 2007 shooter. Players will be able to choose three killstreaks from a list ahead of a match, which they can then use if and when they get the appropriate number of kills.

  • First Doctor Who: The Edge of Time PSVR Gameplay Is Very Brown

    We’re not impressed.

The first slice of footage for Doctor Who: The Edge of Time has just hit the internet, and we can’t say this is the most impressed we’ve ever been by a trailer. Take a look for yourself in the clip above.

It’s all incredibly brown? We see the player first collecting items while a voiceover plays from what we assume is Jodie Whittaker herself, before a Dalek invasion kicks into gear. It doesn’t look bad necessarily, but we’re going to need to see more before we can look forward to joining up with the Doctor and the TARDIS in September. Don’t forget that this is currently a exclusive to virtual reality headsets, including PlayStation VR, and won’t be playable without one.

  • Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Won’t Take Away from Sony to Achieve Success

    “That’s not me”.

Xbox’s figurehead Phil Spencer is clearly in favour of collaborating with competition rather than keeping them at arm’s length, so much so that he wouldn’t want to take away anything from Sony or the PlayStation brand in order to better Microsoft’s family of consoles.

During an interview with Fortune Magazine, when asked if the consumer reaction to competition affects Microsoft’s decisions, Spencer said: “I would say the most competitive side of it – no. I’m always listening to the community, but the people who want to see others fail in order for the green team to succeed – that’s not me. There were people, when the Sony deal was announced, I could see it online, ‘what are you doing helping them out?’”

  • Sucker Punch Writer ‘Reveals’ The Order: 1886 Sequel

    But promptly backtracks.

Sucker Punch writer Jordan Lemos – who’s currently busy beavering away on Japanese samurai open worlder Ghost of Tsushima – “revealed” a sequel to The Order: 1886 on a podcast this week. Given his position within the Worldwide Studios family, Reddit was quick to pick up on the story, prompting the scribe to clarify that he misunderstood a series of stories based on an interview with creative director Ru Weerasuriya.

“Last I heard, they were actually doing a second one,” he told our friends from the Gamerheads podcast. “So I don’t know if they were already in development at that point so they were like ‘Well, let’s just keep going and hoping the next one’s better or people like it more’ kinda thing.”

  • Pokemon Go: Team Rocket Invasion Event Happening Today

After numerous teases, Team Rocket finally made their debut in Pokemon Go earlier this week. The villainous trainers would “take over” various PokeStops around the world and challenge players to battles using their Shadow Pokemon. Although Rocket sightings up until now have been relatively rare, particularly if you live in rural areas, you’ll have a better chance to encounter some Rocket grunts today, July 28, thanks to a special limited-time event.

From 4-5 PM local time, Team Rocket grunts will take over all of your local PokeStops, guaranteeing you’ll encounter the villainous trainers during that time frame. When you spin the Photo Disc at a Team Rocket PokeStop, the Rocket grunt will reveal themselves and challenge you to a Pokemon battle. As previously mentioned, Team Rocket has Shadow Pokemon in their possession, which are surrounded by a sinister aura.

SUP, TWERPS! ? While all of you were distracted with the little stunt that we pulled in New York, we mobilized our forces for a GLOBAL TEAM GO ROCKET INVASION! From 4 to 5 p.m. in your local time, we’ll be taking over ALL the PokéStops in your area. Teehee. ? #TeamGORocket pic.twitter.com/7KZ6HFS3jD

    — Team GO Rocket (@PokemonGoApp) July 28, 2019

If you defeat the Rocket grunt, they’ll leave their Shadow Pokemon behind, giving you an opportunity to capture it. You can choose to either keep the Pokemon in its Shadow form or “purify” it. Not only will this return the Pokemon’s appearance to normal, it’ll increase its stats and confer a few other benefits. You can read more about how the process works in our guide to catching and purifying Shadow Pokemon.

While you’re out searching for Team Rocket, you may want to search for Armored Mewtwo Raids as well–the Legendary Pokemon is leaving the game on July 31, making this your last opportunity to add one to your collection. Pokemon Go’s One Piece crossover event is also ending soon; you have until tomorrow, July 29, to catch a Pikachu sporting a straw hat like the one that One Piece hero Luffy wears.

Meanwhile, Pokemon Go’s next Community Day is scheduled for Saturday, August 3. This time, the featured Pokemon will be Ralts. If you can evolve it into one of its final forms–Gardevoir or Gallade–up to an hour after the Community Day ends, the Pokemon will automatically learn a special event-exclusive move. Additionally, Pokemon Eggs will hatch at a quarter of the distance they typically require during the Community Day.

Moon Landing Featurette for Sci-Fi ‘Ad Astra’ with A Bit More Footage

    Ad Astra Featurette

“The drive of the human spirit is to explore.” 20th Century Fox debuted a featurette for James Gray’s extra heavy sci-fi film Ad Astra, which is confirmed to premiere at the Venice Film Festival this fall. We’ve seen two stunning official trailers for Ad Astra so far [here and here] but clearly there’s more to come. This has a tiny bit of extra footage, focusing mostly on our Moon to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing in 1969. There’s some beautiful shots in this, especially one that reminds me a bit of Wall-E with the moon dust. Everything about this looks mesmerizing, and the more they show the more excited I get. Brad Pitt stars as an astronaut who travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father. He uncovers extraordinary secrets which challenge the nature of human existence. Also starring Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland, and Jamie Kennedy. With a score by Max Richter. Dive in. ›››

  • Brent Vermeulen in US Trailer for South African Film ‘The Harvesters’

Brent Vermeulen in US Trailer for South African Film ‘The Harvesters’

    The Harvesters Trailer

“When the real world comes knocking, you won’t last two minutes, bro.” Altered Innocence has debuted an official US trailer for a South African drama titled The Harvesters, also known as Die Stropers (which translates directly to The Poachers) in Afrikaans. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and is getting a small theatrical release this fall. Brent Vermeulen plays a boy named Janno. He is “different, secretive, emotionally frail.” One day his mother, fiercely religious, brings home Pieter, a hardened street orphan she wants to save, and asks Janno to make this stranger into his brother. The two start a fight for power, heritage and parental love. The cast includes Alex van Dyk, Juliana Venter, and Morné Visser. From Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, “Kallos’ debut feature film explores teenage angst and family dynamics set against a harsh yet stunning South African backdrop.” Reminds me of God’s Own Country in many ways. ›››
