    Every Day Short Film

“I was born in the attic / because Mother claimed / brown the more honest name / for beige. They hit her––” This is a short film with a purpose – to help spread awareness and bring attention to the adversity and challenges different people face in society. Every Day is a simple but meaningful short film inspired by a lovely poem by Robin Coste Lewis, first published in the NY Times in 2017. Motionpoems is a non-profit organization that is bringing poems to life, and this short film is their latest offering to the world – directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Ryan Simon. The full poem can be found on their website, and the short film is just a scene set to an impassioned recitation of the poem. It might stir up some feelings inside of you. If you enjoy this short, they have plenty more and are always putting out new poetry-inspired shorts. ›››

One Final Trailer for Heist Comedy 'Ocean's 8' Directed by Gary Ross

    Ocean's 8 Final Trailer

“Can anyone really be overqualified…?” Warner Bros has dropped one more, final trailer for ensemble heist comedy Ocean’s 8, the all-women follow-up to the Ocean’s 11 series from Steven Soderbergh. This hits theaters in just a few weeks. We already know what it’s all about, thanks to two trailers before, and if you need one final push this trailer might not be it. There’s not a lot to this final trailer, but it does look fun. The stellar ensemble of women involved in this NYC heist are: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, and Awkwafina. I’m so down for this just because I want to see how they pull off the fancy Met heist and get away with it. Game on! ›››

  • Cannes 2018: Romain Gavras' 'The World is Yours' is Ludicrously Fun

Cannes 2018: Romain Gavras' 'The World is Yours' is Ludicrously Fun

    The World is Yours

There are not that many comedies that play at the Cannes Film Festival every year, only a few good ones slip in. The World is Yours, titled Le monde est à toi in French, is the latest feature film made by acclaimed music video director Romain Gavras. The film is a comedy about a small-time drug dealer from Paris who as aspirations to get out of the drug world once and for all, and settle down selling Mr. Freeze ice pops in Morocco. The biggest thing in his way – his own mother, who actually is one of the top gangsters in the city, and still has a steady hand on all of his money. This film plays like Snatch meets Spring Breakers with some serious French attitude, a mobster “coming-of-age” for the new age that is so much ludicrous fun. It’s about time Gavras breaks out and gets the attention he deserves as a talented, always-fresh filmmaker with spunk. ›››

The latest film by Jim McKay, this indie drama is a compelling look at immigrants in America and the work they do for us. The film follows a group of undocumented Mexican immigrants who work long hours six days a week, and then savor their day of rest on Sundays on the soccer fields of Brooklyn. It has been described in reviews as “an ode to those who fight for that glimmer of hope this country claims,” giving us a look at the lives of these immigrants and how hard they work for the chance to have the most basic lives, with their brief freedom to play soccer bringing them the most joy. • Review: Ron Howard's 'Solo' is a Blast of the Familiar for Star Wars Fans

Review: Ron Howard's 'Solo' is a Blast of the Familiar for Star Wars Fans

    Solo: A Star Wars Story

In many ways 2018 is both the best and worst period of time to be a fan of the Star Wars franchise. On one hand, with Disney and the Kathleen Kennedy-led Lucasfilm in charge of the slate of new films, there are more stories set in the tumultuous galaxy being told than ever before. On the flipside, the notion of burnout with all these Star Wars films can be felt to say nothing of the turbulent manner in which many fans find themselves. There is more conflict among the fan-base than there ever was under George Lucas‘ control, the catalyst of which stems from Lucasfilm’s concept of going back and forth between stories set in the main Skywalker saga, and extra standalone stories set elsewhere in the time and place of the Star Wars galaxy. ›››

Cannes 2018 Recap: The Festival Pushes Forward, Shaking Things Up

    Cannes 2018

Looking back on Cannes this year, everything did turn out pretty well. No disasters, nothing bad happened, no big complaints, they actually let us bring in water to the cinemas this year (they didn’t last year). At the start of the festival, I wrote about how they were entering a new era and starting out by making some major changes – and who knew how this would all affect us. Now that the 71st Cannes Film Festival is finished, the awards handed out, looking back on the experience – it was a great year. It went smooth, they showed a ton of outstanding films, plus a few bad ones. Even though it wasn’t exactly perfect, they seemed to actually be making some good progress getting into a new era and slowly setting a precedent for the next few years. Dare I say, they’re making the right steps. Little by little, they’re cleaning up their act and still remaining relevant – even without Netflix films (for now). Don’t listen to the naysayers, Cannes is as important as ever. ›››
