Berlinale 2016: Alex Gibney's Eye-Opening Cyber War Doc 'Zero Days'

    Zero Days Review

Do you think what Edward Snowden revealed about the surveillance state is terrifying? Wait until you see this documentary. What documentarian Alex Gibney uncovers in his new documentary Zero Days is incredibly frightening and extremely worrying. But that’s his point – he wants to thrown open the doors to these top secret operations and allow the people of this planet to debate and discuss what’s happening. Zero Days begins by examining the malware known as Stuxnet, a self-propagating virus that seems to have been written by the NSA specifically to attack centrifuges in Iran. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. From there it presents a case that we’ve entered the era of cyber warfare, but few people know about what’s occurring. ›››

    Pee-wee's Big Holiday Trailer

“Didn’t you ever wonder what life is like outside Fairville?” “Nope. You know I don’t want to go anywhere, or try anything new!” Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the return of Pee-wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens, titled Pee-wee’s Big Holiday. This is the first real Pee-wee movie since Big Top Pee-wee in 1988 and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985, so this has been a long time in the making. In this new movie, Pee-wee decides to leave his home town and go on adventure in search of actor Joe Manganiello (seen in Magic Mike XXL, What to Expect When You’re Expecting), who shows up to get a milkshake at the start. This looks like it should be quite fun, especially if you’re a fan of Pee-wee that has been awaiting his return. ›››

Editorial: Why Hollywood Mustn't Rate Everything D for 'Deadpool'

    Deadpool

The box office totals are in. The reviews have been read and audiences have spoken with a mouth as loud as a merc – Tim Miller’s Deadpool is a huge success, and not just financially or even critically. It has been universally well received, which is a tremendous accomplishment for a third tier superhero character that (according to 20th Century Fox) had minimal mainstream appeal that languished in development hell for years. It was the vulgar, graphic and unadulterated version of Thomas the Tank Engine, the little irreverent train that could. However, with the success of Deadpool, major movie studios everywhere might not take the best lessons from the film’s astronomical success – as James Gunn illustrated so brilliantly last weekend. So let’s take a look at what Hollywood can glean from the outrageous success of the Merc with a Mouth. ›››

First Trailer for Gibney's Frightening Cyber Warfare Doc 'Zero Days'

    Zero Days Trailer

“Most of these systems are relativity easy for a sophisticated hacker to get into.” Hot on the heels of the world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the first official trailer has debuted online for Alex Gibney’s new documentary Zero Days. This time Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney throws the doors wide open on cyber warfare, profiling what he deems the first official cyber attack – the Stuxnet virus that infected computers all over the world, but was designed to specifically attack centrifuges refining nuclear material in Iran. The doc examines the bigger picture of how we’ve entered an era of a cyber warfare, with governments using tactics like this without anyone even knowing about it. I saw the film this morning at Berlinale and it is frightening and eye-opening, one of the most ambitious docs from Gibney in years. Get a first look below. ›››

  • Watch: Teaser Trailer for Stephen Frears' 'Florence Foster Jenkins'

Watch: Teaser Trailer for Stephen Frears' 'Florence Foster Jenkins'

    Florence Foster Jenkins Trailer

“You have to hear it to believe it!” The first teaser trailer has debuted online for Stephen Frears’ next film, Florence Foster Jenkins, following his work on The Program (watch the latest trailer for that here). In this film, Meryl Streep plays Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer despite having a terrible singing voice. Hugh Grant also stars, and the cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, John Kavanagh, Simon Helberg, and plenty others. Florence Foster Jenkins is already a popular person, as her can’t-really-sing story is similar to the one in the film Marguerite. This movie seems to embrace the absurd fun of the whole story, and it looks like Meryl Streep is at her finest as always. Enjoy. ›››

  • Berlinale 2016: 'Genius' is a Very Touching Film About Literary Friends

Berlinale 2016: 'Genius' is a Very Touching Film About Literary Friends

    Genius Review

It’s not often that we see a film about editors, about the hard-working, dedicated people that hide behind-the-scenes and help writers produce their best work. Michael Grandage’s Genius is a very touching story about two friends – writer/novelist Thomas Wolfe, and Charles Scribner’s Sons editor Maxwell Perkins. Max first meets Tom when a massive manuscript is dropped on his desk. He reluctantly reads it, but finds it to be absolutely wonderful, bringing in the writer to work on cutting it down so they can sell it as a novel. This ends up becoming Wolfe’s first book Look Homeward, Angel, and it was the beginning of a rewarding relationship between these two showing just how important an editor is to producing truly successful work. ›››

They’re backkkk!! Production is now underway on the Marvel Studios sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with James Gunn directing once again. Shooting has started and Gunn states, “I couldn’t be more stoked.” Gunn dropped the first official photo on social media, not actually a still from the movie, but rather an on-set shot showing the whole gang back together again. Chris Pratt returns as Star-Lord, joined by Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, plus Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper voicing Groot and Rocket Raccoon. Everyone’s favorite intergalactic heroes can be seen silhouetted in the image below, with more to come as they continue filming over the next few months. Marvel is aiming for release in 2017. ›››

    Leo's Red Carpet Rampage

Wait, wait, wait! Someone made an 8-bit video game about Leonardo DiCaprio’s pursuit of Oscar glory?! Get out of town. This is totally awesome! The video game was made by The Line Animation at Electric Theatre Collective, and involves controlling various Academy Awards contenders on a race down the red carpet to nab that glorious golden statuette before anyone else does. It was obviously inspired specifically by the well-known fact that Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated five times for an acting Academy Award, but has yet to win one. Until the Oscar ceremony comes around in a few weeks – this is definitely worth playing. Watch a trailer and click right below for the website to play Leo’s Red Carpet Rampage. Have fun. ›››

Jennifer Jason Leigh in Trailer for Horror 'Amityville: The Awakening'

    Amityville: The Awakening Trailer

“Somethings not right in here… I keep seeing things, hearing things…” “It’s not you, it’s the house.” The Weinstein Company has debuted the first trailer for Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening, a “revival of the popular franchise and a modern twist on the classic horror film.” It’s pretty much an updated, creepy take on Amityville with a story involving a single mother moving into the haunted house with two daughters and a son with an injury that has left him in a coma. Oscar nominated actress Jennifer Jason Leigh stars, along with Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan and Thomas Mann as well as Kurtwood Smith. I like the poster a bit more than I like the trailer, but this kind of horror freaks me out. Fire it up. ›››

  • First Trailer for French Action Movie 'Bastille Day' Starring Idris Elba

First Trailer for French Action Movie 'Bastille Day' Starring Idris Elba

    Bastille Day Trailer

“You really should think about anger management. You’re reckless, and irresponsible, you can’t just run and start firing.” Studiocanal UK has debuted an official trailer for the French action movie Bastille Day, starring the always-awesome Idris Elba as a former CIA agent who goes to Paris, France to help with an anti-terrorism mission. However, as the quote above mentions, he seems to be more reckless than helpful. The cast includes Kelly Reilly and Charlotte Le Bon. This looks like it has some solid action, but more than anything it’s great to watch Idris Elba kickin’ some ass. I’m interested in checking this out. Take a look. ›››
