Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny Trailer #3

“The fight to keep a great warrior’s sword from an evil warlord will change them in ways they never imagined.” Netflix has unveiled another trailer, the third one they’ve released, for the sequel Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny directed by martial arts choreographer & stuntman Yuen Woo-ping. The second trailer just hit last week and this one follows up with even more action before the film’s debut on Netflix in two days. Michelle Yeoh is back as Shu Lien, along with a cast including Donnie Yen, Harry Shum Jr., Jason Scott Lee, Eugenia Yuan, Juju Chan, Chris Pang, Darryl Quon and Roger Yuan. I’m still not sure if this will be any good, but I am kinda curious enough to find out. You, too? ›››

Steven S. DeKnight Selected to Direct Guillermo's Sequel 'Pacific Rim 2'

    Pacific Rim

This is a bit of a surprise considering we thought a sequel was on hold, but good news for those anxiously awaiting the next Pacific Rim movie. Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures has found a new director to take on the fantasy sci-fi action sequel Pacific Rim 2, leaving Gullermo del Toro free to work on other projects while the movie is still being made. The production company has hired Steven S. DeKnight to make his feature directing debut after creating the show “Spartacus” and working on other TV shows prior, including recently executive producing and writing for Marvel’s “Daredevil” on Netflix. Del Toro confirmed the news on his Twitter, saying he met with DeKnight and they are on the same page as for what to expect. ›››

    Light Between the Oceans

“My life. Isabel, my love. Every day we spend together…” Studiocanal UK has debuted the first trailer for Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance’s latest film, The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Set in Australia in the years following WWI, the film is about a couple that rescues a small baby that washes ashore, raising her as their own. It’s desribed as a “beautiful yet heart-breaking story of love and sacrifice”, based on the book by M.L Stedman. The cast includes Rachel Weisz, Benedict Hardie and Emily Barclay, produced by David Heyman. This looks truly wonderful, everything I was expecting it to be. The score in this is already so beautiful, making me feel emotional. Watch below. ›››

    Echo Park Trailer

“Can the vacation, or the crisis, or whatever it is, just be over now? Can you come back to reality, because this is not reality. Echo Park is not reality.” Array Releasing has debuted a new trailer for the indie drama Echo Park, the directorial debut of celebrity photographer turned filmmaker Amanda Marsalis, starring Mamie Gummer and Anthony Okungbowa. This “lyrical drama” is about two people coming together across cultural economic and racial boundaries. This initially premiered back in 2014, but Array has been finding gems like this to release and it’s just hitting theaters in April. I’m totally sold, this looks really good, a refreshing change from the typical romantic drama. That shot of Mamie at 1:22 is just so beautiful. Enjoy! ›››

Ava DuVernay Set to Direct 'A Wrinkle In Time' Adaptation for Disney

Ava DuVernay to Direct A Wrinkle In Time

Some good news to report regarding one our favorite filmmakers. Deadline is stating that Disney has set Ava DuVerney, director of Selma and Middle of Nowhere, to direct an adaptation of the 1963 Newbey Medal-winning book A Wrinkle In Time. Ever since Selma received a Best Picture nomination, DuVernay has been in-demand at various Hollywood studios, being considered for projects like Marvel’s Black Panther among others. However, apparently she is eyeing two specific projects at Disney – one is this adaptation of the classic fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle, the other is a sci-fi screenplay by Colin Trevorrow & Derek Connolly titled Intelligent Life in the works at DreamWorks. Both films seem like a good fit for DuVernay. ›››

Berlinale 2016: 'Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures' is Wildly Inspiring

    Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures

As an avid photographer myself, I truly love coming across a documentary that expands my mind about the artistic qualities and emotional power of excellent photography. Along with The Salt of the Earth (about legendary photographer Sebastião Salgado), the documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures is the latest to leave me floored. This utterly inspiring and eye-opening doc examines the (entire) life of Robert Mapplethorpe, a controversial gay photographer whose work was banned from museums in the 90s because it was deemed too obscene. Boy were they wrong. Hearing him talk about his life and then seeing the photos he produced – I couldn’t help repeating in my mind, “this guy is a true master of photography.” Seriously. ›››

John Travolta in Trailer for 'Life on the Line' Power Line Workers Film

    Life on the Line

“I do have a job, momma, I told you I’m a line man now.” Voltage Pictures has released a new trailer for the film called Life on the Line, about the dangerous and challenging lives of power line workers. Yeah, seriously. The film stars John Travolta and Devon Sawa as two line workers who end up working during a massive storm that nearly destroys their lives. The cast includes Kate Bosworth, Sharon Stone, Gil Bellows, Julie Benz and Ryan Robbins. This almost looks like one of those action movies from the 90s that we don’t see anymore, all about hard working people who just want to keep everyone safe and do their jobs. Not sure if this will find any audience at all, but give it a watch anyway. “We gotta get the power on!” ›››

    Fastball Trailer

“Sounds like trouble, is what it sounds like.” Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for the documentary Fastball, produced by Legendary Pictures and directed by Jonathan Hock, with narration by actor Kevin Costner. The film examines “the magic within the 396 milliseconds it takes a fastball to reach home plate” and focuses on the greatest fastball pitchers in the sport’s history, attempting to figure out who threw the fastest pitch. There are appearances by Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan and Derek Jeter, among others. This trailer doesn’t reveal everything, and it plays up the angle of “so who threw the fastest pitch? You have to watch to find out the answer!” But it does look pretty good. Any and every baseball fan needs to check this out below. ›››
