Must Watch: First Trailer for Jeff Nichols' Interracial Drama 'Loving'

    Loving Trailer

“I’m going to raise my family here; I don’t care what they do to us.” Focus Features has unveiled the first beautiful full trailer for Jeff Nichol’s new film Loving, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this summer. The film tells the story of the legendary interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their small town in Virginia. The cast includes Alano Miller, Martin Csokas, Nick Kroll, and Michael Shannon. I saw this in Cannes and was moved to tears. I wrote in my review that it’s a “a tender and heartfelt film. It relies so much on the relationship between them and how beautiful that is to see – there are no questions about their love, only about those who challenge it.” Yes indeed… Take a look. ›››

  • First Trailer for Action Thriller 'Billionaire Ransom' with Ed Westwick

First Trailer for Action Thriller 'Billionaire Ransom' with Ed Westwick

    Billionaire Ransom Trailer

“If we get this done, biggest ransom in the history of the world, my friend.” Gravitas Ventures has unveiled a trailer for a film called Billionaire Ransom, an interesting action thriller of sorts. The story is about a group of kids from rich families at a boarding school on an island who take matters into their own hands when the campus is taken hostage by criminals. The cast includes Jeremy Sumpter, Phoebe Tonkin, Ed Westwick, Dominic Sherwood, Elliot Knight, Sebastian Koch, and Sara Stewart. Not really sure what to make of this, some weird scenes in this trailer, but maybe it has some intriguing twists and turns. Then again, this seems like it could straight-to-DVD and it would matter either. It’s made by the director of I Know What You Did Last Summer who hasn’t really made much else since that film hit in 1997. See below. ›››

Check Out This Celtic Culture Inspired Animated Short Film 'Drone'

    Drone Short Film

This is an impressive little animated short film that should make you happy by the end. Drone is made by students from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Scotland. Set in a post-apocalyptic Scotland “when machines have taken over the cities and mankind has retreated to the forests”, a young woman hunting for animals encounters an automated drone and figures out how to fight back. There’s some refreshing optimism in this film, and it’s inspired by Celtic culture. Not only does it reminds me of Studio Ghibli films, but there’s a bit of Rey from The Force Awakens found in the main character. Worth a watch. ›››

Watch: Teaser Trailer for New MMA Documentary 'The Hurt Business'

    The Hurt Business Trailer

“Is it worth it to sacrifice one’s mind and body for sport?” The first teaser trailer has debuted online for a documentary called The Hurt Business, from director Vlad Yudin (of Generation Iron), taking a look at MMA and the superstars of mixed martial arts. It’s narrated by Kevin Costner and profiles the lives of a couple of major competitors, including Ronda Rousey and Jon Jones. The descriptions says it discusses the theme of injuries “both mental and physical” within MMA, and it also looks at just how dedicated these athletes are to this popular sport. Other great MMA docs include The Smashing Machine, Rickson Gracie: Choke, and Like Water about fighter Anderson Silva. Even if you’re not a fan of MMA, this is worth a look. ›››

Molly Shannon & Jesse Plemons Star in First Trailer for 'Other People'

    Other People Trailer

“I get to see my whole world at dinner tonight.” Vertical Entertainment has unveiled a trailer for the indie comedy Other People, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on opening night this year. Starring Jesse Plemons and Molly Shannon, the film is about a gay comedy writer who travels home after breaking up with his boyfriend to take care of his mother who learns she’s sick with cancer. That may not sound like a comedy, but that’s part of the brilliance of this film, as it balances heart and humor in a very mature and entertaining way. The full cast includes Zach Woods, Bradley Whitford, June Squibb, and Judd Apatow’s daughter Maude Apatow. One of the better films out of Sundance this year worth watching. ›››

One More Trailer for Derek Cianfrance's 'The Light Between Oceans'

    The Light Between Oceans

“We have to do what’s right…” Still one of our most anticipated films to see this year. Vulture has debuted a short new trailer for Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans, to compliment the new poster also unveiled this week (see it below). The film stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as a couple living on an island off the coast of Australia that raise a young child as their own after it washes up on shore one day. The cast includes Rachel Weisz, Emily Barclay, Anthony Hayes and Leon Ford. It’s based on the book of the same name which is also worth reading if you’re fascinated by this very emotional story. This is the third trailer after two other must watch trailers. The music in these trailers really helps pull me further into this, and I can’t wait to finally catch it in theaters in a few months. Give this a quick look below. ›››

Watch: 'Celluloid Dreams' Short About an Old Man and His Projector

    Celluloid Dreams Short Film

Another charming short to feature this week (in addition to The Foley Artist). This one is called Celluloid Dreams, written & directed by Jonathan Dillon. It has already played at enough festivals to be qualified for Academy Awards consideration, so we’ll see if it makes the cut next year. The film stars Greg Lucey as an old man who puts together a broken projector and rewatches some of the old films he made growing up, discovering that he apparently can change the past while watching them. Or can he? I like the vibe of this film, telling such an emotional story without much dialogue and providing some bit of happiness at the end. ›››

Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland Trailer

“They came from another time, they came from another world…” A new trailer has debuted online for a documentary called Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland, about the rise and fall of independent production company Empire Pictures. Similar to the documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films, this film examines the story of producer Charles Band and the crappy D-movies he made back in the 1980s. Empire is most well known for making cult favorite genre films like Re-Animator, Ghoulies, Robot Jox, Trancers, and From Beyond, to name a few (any of these your favorites?). It’s always fascinating to take a closer look at how films like this were made, especially considering they figured out how finance and find people to work on them. This trailer is mostly footage from their films, but I still dig it. ›››
