    Operation Avalanche Trailer

“We’re going to use his space movie to make sure the real space movie looks like space. Do you understand how crazy that is?!” Lionsgate has released a trailer for an indie called Operation Avalanche, billed as a documentary (even though it’s a fictional found footage feature) about the people who faked the moon landing. This trailer is perfectly timed as today (July 21st) is the 47th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon. This film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and it’s a fun conspiracy theory thriller with some impressive low budget work. The filmmaking is outstanding and I can’t wait to see where director Matt Johnson goes in his career. It stars Johnson Owen Williams as two CIA agents who end up in a conspiracy theory faking the moon landing since NASA can’t pull it off. You just have to see this for yourself. ›››

    Hands of Stone Trailer

“This is inexplicable!” The Weinstein Company has unveiled the full-length, official trailer for Hands of Stone, one of the two major boxing movies this year (the other being Miles Teller’s Bleed For This). The film tells the true story of professional boxer Roberto Durán, played by Edgar Ramirez, who hails from Panama. Durán fought predominantly during the 80s and is still considered one of the greatest boxers of all-time, earning the nickname “Hands of Stone” during his career. The cast includes Robert De Niro as trainer Ray Arcel, plus Usher Raymond IV as Sugar Ray Leonard, Ana de Armas, Ellen Barkin, and John Turturro. The first teaser didn’t show much, but this one gives us a good look at what to expect in this story about a legendary boxer. It seems as much about Durán as it does about Sugar Ray Leonard, too. ›››

  • New International Trailer for Disney Animation's Next Musical 'Moana'

New International Trailer for Disney Animation's Next Musical 'Moana'

    Disney's Moana Trailer

Adorable! Disney has released an international teaser trailer for the musical Moana, the latest from Disney Animation and co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, The Princess and the Frog). The trailer doesn’t feature any dialogue, instead it shows an early scene from the film where a very young Moana learns that she has the power to control the ocean, specifically the water. I love the shot with the turtle swimming by. Auli’i Cravalho voices Princess Moana, and the rest of the cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Phillipa Soo. If you want to see more footage, go back and watch the teaser trailer or wait until the next full-length trailer debuts – hopefully soon. Until then, enjoy. ›››

    Fellowship of the Ring Trailer

“You will unite, or you will fall.” The first film in the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy first hit theaters December of 2001, nearly 15 years ago. To celebrate the anniversary, Miguel Branco edited together a brand new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and it’s rather wonderful. This is one of my all-time favorite films (only topped by The Return of the King) and I still remember seeing it in theaters on a cold, snowy night in December. Elijah Wood stars as Frodo, with Sean Astin as Samwise, and Ian McKellen as Gandalf; including Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, and many others. This trailer should make you smile, and put a tear in your eye. Hard to believe it has been 15 years. ›››

  • Don't Watch: Vin Diesel in First Trailer for 'xXx: Return of Xander Cage'

Don't Watch: Vin Diesel in First Trailer for 'xXx: Return of Xander Cage'

xXx: Return of Xander Cage Trailer

“The world has changed… The war we’re fighting today needs a different kind of solider.” He’s back! And man does this look bad. Paramount has debuted the first teaser trailer for the sequel xXx: Return of Xander Cage, the next film in the xXx (“triple X”) series. Vin Diesel returns as Xander Cage, aong with an international cast: Deepika Padukone, Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, Nina Dobrev, Rory McCann and Samuel L. Jackson. This looks unbelievably cheesy in kind of an offensive way. Every last line of dialogue is utterly atrocious, and I have no idea what the heck is even happening in this. Why is he skiing through a jungle? How the hell is he riding a motorcycle on water? None of this makes any sense at all. What a mess. ›››

  • Ethan Hawke in the Debut Trailer for Ti West's 'In a Valley of Violence'

Ethan Hawke in the Debut Trailer for Ti West's 'In a Valley of Violence'

In a Valley of Violence Trailer

“Don’t worry everyone, you are gunna see a fight!” Focus World has unveiled a trailer for the new film from acclaimed horror filmmaker Ti West, titled In a Valley of Violence, his first foray into westerns. Ethan Hawke plays a “mysterious drifter” named Paul who makes his way through the desert with his dog, Abbie. During a trip through a big valley, they come upon a town called Denton and end up in trouble with the town’s Marshal, played by John Travolta. The cast includes Karen Gillan, Taissa Farmiga, Burn Gorman, and James Ransone. This looks like a solid, violent western with some great dialogue, but it seems like your standard revenge story and not much more. I still really want to see it, especially because his dog looks so adorable. “Those men left me with nothing, I’m going to leave them with less.” Have at it. ›››

    Kate Plays Christine Trailer

Grasshopper Film has debuted a trailer for the documentary Kate Plays Christine, directed by Robert Greene, examining the life and infamous death of Christine Chubbuck. Chubbuck was a young news anchor in Florida, who shot herself in the head on live TV during a news broadcast in 1974. Her story was dramatized and turned into a feature film at Sundance this year called Christine, starring Rebecca Hall. In addition, this documentary also played at Sundance and it has been referred to as a meta-film as it blends some fiction and non-fiction elements and profiles actress Kate Lyn Sheil preparing to play the role of Christine Chubbuck in a film that was never finished. It received rave reviews and arrives in theaters soon. ›››

  • Tom Hardy in Official US Trailer for Musical Adaptation 'London Road'

Tom Hardy in Official US Trailer for Musical Adaptation 'London Road'

    London Road Trailer

“So, we got together as a community… We just want to see an end, London Road getting back to being London Road.” BBC Films has unveiled a new official US trailer for the musical adaptation London Road, the big screen version of the musical that was a big hit on stages in London in 2011 and 2012. “Using their own words set to an innovative musical score, London Road tells a moving story of ordinary people coming together during the darkest of experiences.” It’s about a small town that was disturbed by a murderer, and the locals who wanted to tell their story. The cast features all the same people from the original stage show, including Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Anita Dobson, James Doherty, Kate Fleetwood and many others. This film already opened in the UK last year, but is just getting its US release this fall. Take a look. ›››

Watch: One More 'David and Goliath' Trailer for 'Hell or High Water'

    Hell or High Water Trailer

“Y’all been here for a while? Long enough to watch a bank getting robbed that has been robbing me for 30 years…” CBS Films has unveiled one more official trailer for David Mackenzie’s modern western Hell or High Water, from the writer of Sicario and the director of Starred Up. Chris Pine and Ben Foster star as brothers who decide to rob a couple of banks in small towns in Texas. Close to retirement, the Texas Ranger who decides to hunt them down is Marcus, played by Jeff Bridges. The cast includes Katy Mixon, Dale Dickey, Kevin Rankin, Marin Ireland and Gil Birmingham. This is a helluva film and I highly recommend catching it in theaters. See it because Jeff Bridges is badass in it, see it because the script is outstanding, see it because David Mackenzie is a talented director. There’s plenty of good reasons to see it. ›››

Watch: Official Trailer for Documentary 'Author: The JT LeRoy Story'

Author: The JT LeRoy Story Trailer

“The biggest literary hoax of our time!” Amazon Studios and Magnolia Pictures have debuted the official trailer for a documentary called Author: The JT LeRoy Story, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. I heard many great things about this film from lots of my colleagues, as it’s apparently one of those remarkable I-can’t-believe-this-is-real stories told in a very innovative way. Author: The JT LeRoy Story is about author JT LeRoy, who is actually a completely fabricated persona made up by writer Laura Albert. Spoiler! But that’s what the doc is really about – how she pulled this off and why, and what it all means. If you’re not sold by the end of this trailer, well, then maybe documentaries aren’t for you. But seriously, this looks fascinating and incredibly entertaining, a deep dive into a crazy true story. Enjoy. ›››
