  • Gears 6 Could Get Inspiration From an Unlikely Source

Considering the critical success of Gears 5, it’s not too difficult to imagine Gears 6 is already in the works. But according to The Coalition’s art director, a potential Gears 6 may get visual inspiration from an interesting source.

Iran-based video game composer Hamidreza Nikoofar has a podcast series called Wassup Conversations where Nikoofar speaks with various developers. A recent episode featured a conversation with Gears 5 art director Aryan Hanbeck, who revealed a surprising inspiration for a possible Gears 6.

“One thing – the guys here will probably laugh if they see this – but I’ve been telling all the artists nonstop to go watch Handmaid’s Tale… The composition, the color, and just the cinematography and symbolism is just off the charts,” Hanbeck says. “So, I watched that and I’m like, ‘Wow we gotta find a way to get more of this stuff in Gears 6.’”

  • Opinion: Video Games Have (Happily) Outgrown Their Genre Labels

Video games conjure entire worlds from polygons and code that we spend days exploring, so it’s no surprise we talk about them constantly – like sailors peeling off our stiff, salty clothes to tell tales of adventure around a table. Our stories usually begin in a similar way. Your friend might ask, “have you heard of

? It’s a 2D puzzle platformer.” Or think of the podcast host who describes a game they played recently as “a team-based multiplayer first-person-shooter.”

But what do they actually mean? The podcast host was describing Counter-Strike, but “team-based multiplayer first-person-shooter” could equally apply to Apex Legends or Team Fortress 2. The “2D puzzle platformer” label outlined Little Nightmares (a game about guiding a tiny, yellow-coated child to escape a hide-and-seek horror gauntlet) but could just as easily have described Celeste (a meditative platformer about a woman climbing a mountain that’s a metaphor for her anxiety).

  • Confused Parents Flood Fortnite’s Support Line During Black Hole Event

Fortnite Season 10 ended with a black hole deleting the game’s island map, leaving fans, and parents, confused as to why they can’t play the game.

It’s clear Fortnite will return relatively soon with a brand new Chapter 2 and a map that’s likely completely different than the Season 10 map, which has conveniently been leaked via a newly-emerged trailer.

  • Concrete Genie Review

Concrete Genie’s best idea – the one you’ll return to over and again across its six-hour runtime – is, for the most part, sort of optional. If you’ve seen anything from Pixelopus’ second game, you’ll have seen that idea in action: lead character Ash pausing his semi-open world platforming to daub living drawings across the sides of run-down buildings. Trees sprout and grow, 2D waterfalls pour from rooftops onto bobbing ponds, and stars sprinkle themselves across brick-backed skies like dropped glitter. Thing is, if you wanted to, you could cynically cover almost every wall in paintings of a few boring blades of grass and still be able to continue. But you won’t. More likely, you’ll spend far longer than is technically required in each area, creating shimmering landscapes across the length of this shuttered city, and for no reason other than your own satisfaction. This is Concrete Genie’s crowning achievement.

  • World of Warcraft Update 8.3 Adds Two New Races and Eldritch Horrors

Blizzard has just revealed the next update for World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. In a new developer update, WoW director Ion Hazzikostas shared the eldritch setting for WoW Update 8.3: Visions of N’Zoth, which will also come with two new playable races.

Update 8.3 introduces two new playable Allied Races: The Vulpera for the Horde, and Mechagnomes for the Alliance. Allied Races are unique races in WoW that require players to first max out their faction reputation before starting a new Allied Race character. The two races were introduced as non-playable races in Battle for Azeroth, but will officially arrive in Update 8.3.

  • Borderlands 3: Troy Baker Reveals Why He Wasn’t Rhys, Gearbox Responds

UPDATE (9/30/19) – Gearbox Software has sent IGN a statement in response to Troy Baker’s comments from the story below.

“Troy is an exceptional talent and we were disappointed that he declined to partner on Borderlands 3 after being offered the part. We wish him the best and hope he knows the offer to collaborate with him still stands. Gearbox is a Texas company and is bound by Texas law – which means that a person cannot be denied employment because of membership or non-membership in a labor union or other labor organization. As a talent-owned and talent-led organization, Gearbox enthusiastically works to ensure our pay and working conditions meet or exceed union standards. We also believe strongly in hiring local voice actors whenever we can which is why we’re thrilled Troy’s career really took off after working with us.
