Fans that picked up Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain collector’s edition will be glad they did so, as the included blu-ray disc contains footage that reveals pivotal plot points to the story, GameSpot senior reviews editor Peter Brown has discovered.

Without spoiling the contents of the story, the episode is called Kingdom of the Flies and can be found on the blu-ray disc. It was intended to be episode number 51, and the story is told via half-finished cut scenes and storyboards. The footage is fully-voiced and features a host of story elements that tie Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain to other games further down the series’ timeline. Specifically, Kingdom of the Flies gives insight into the motivations of Liquid Snake and Big Boss.

  • P.T. Easter Egg Discovered in Metal Gear Solid 5

The chilling radio report in Konami’s horror experiment P.T. has been discovered in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

Inside a tent at the Ngumba Industrial Zone, which is located at the Angola-Zaire Border, a cassette player can be found, which if activated will play the same news report that perpetually looped in P.T.

The radio news announcer’s voice–this time not distorted–and the unnerving report of a domestic murder that he reads aloud, was an inescapable feature in P.T., with details of the crime repeated like a chant throughout the game.

Arekkz Gaming, a YouTube channel with more than 100,000 subscribers, appears to be among the first to have made the discovery. A video below explains in more detail what players encounter if they search for the cassette player.

This does not mark the first reference to P.T. in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. A year ago it was discovered that the horror game’s iconic ghost, Lisa, could be deployed as an inflatable decoy.

P.T. launched on PlayStation 4 in August 2014. It was a free game demo that, when completed, revealed a world-premiere trailer for Silent Hills, which at the time was a new project in development at Kojima Productions.

However, Konami elected to cancel the Silent Hills project. In the aftermath, it also removed P.T. from Sony’s servers. These events came in the wake of a well-known fallout between Kojima Productions and Konami.

In March, GameSpot revealed that Kojima is expected to leave Konami shortly after the release of Metal Gear Solid V, due to a relationship breakdown with his employer Konami. It is not clear how the situation has evolved since.

Peter Moore, an executive at Electronic Arts, expects Kojima and Konami will “kiss and make up.”

See Destiny: The Taken King's New Guns Up Close

Sci-fi shooter Destiny will be getting a host of new content in the upcoming expansion, The Taken King. Check out some of the new Exotics coming to the game, in detailed high-resolution.

Posted online by Bungie 3D artist Matt Lichy, the pictures show detailed close-ups of the Telesto, Suros, and Omolon rifles.

Check out the weapons in the gallery below.

The Telesto rifle was previously announced by Bungie, described as the following.

“An end will come, Guardian. Bring it about sooner with Telesto, a vestige of the Queen’s Harbringers. This Fusion Rifle will attach projectiles to your foes and detonate with a delayed Void blast. Multikills with this weapon will drop Orbs for your allies.”

    The Omolon rifle

“Pioneers of energy weaponry, Omolon is the first foundry to experiment beyond the world of combustion ballistics. Sporting lighter ergonomic frames, Omolon weapons all start with generous base handling stats to build from. Omolon talent grids focus on behavioral perks over stat customization. Legendary talent grids are the only weapons that offer three perks: one as the first non-scope upgrade and two as a binary choice in the final column. Perk selection favors perks that are energy based and/or go beyond the weapon to interact with the wielder’s abilities or status.”

Click to view the full image.

    The Suros rifle

“Some say the best weapon for a Guardian is the one they can customize to match their intent. Suros believes in options–weapons that can be repurposed for a variety of combat situations. Suros talent grids offer two columns of two stat perks, granting more options for changing weapon stats than any other foundry. The single behavior perk is grounded in the middle of the talent grid as a focus point for the weapon’s core potential. If you want a weapon that can flex from CQ to ranged, quick to powerful, fast handling to hard hitting all with the swap of a few nodes: SUROS.”

Destiny: The Taken King launches on September 15. Players on a PS3 or Xbox 360 will have to check that the game will be able to run on their console. Alongside the expansion, Bungie is releasing a substantial update to the game which will feature an overhaul of the quest system as well as a rebalancing of the weapons in the game.

  • Hideo Kojima Spotted in Metal Gear Solid 5

Hideo Kojima has made a cameo appearance in the latest stealth action game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Continuing Kojima Production’s tradition of splicing its designers in Metal Gear, Kojima can be recruited as a Mother Base worker in the series’ latest title.

Mother Base acts as an operations hub in the Phantom Pain, where players can assign various tasks for soldiers who were captured in-game, such as working on R&D to develop new weapons, or joining the medic bay to concoct more effective medicine. Kojima’s speciality appears to be Intel, with an s-rank rating, though he is also given an A+ rank for Research and Development skills.

GameSpot video producer Edmond Tran posted two images of the discovery on his Twitter profile, showing that Kojima’s character arrives at Mother Base as a “special volunteer.”

    Oh hey there. #PS4share pic.twitter.com/NLfLl1N6LM

    — Edmond Tran (@EdmondTran) September 1, 2015

    A closer look at Kojima. #PS4share pic.twitter.com/9DzLBRE3UE

    — Edmond Tran (@EdmondTran) September 1, 2015

Tran told GameSpot that Kojima joins Mother Base only if the character was saved during a special side-quest in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. Kaz Miller, the in-game character who manages Mother Base, explains that several characters who were rescued in Ground Zeroes will eventually join Mother Base.

It therefore appears that the Phantom Pain can access Ground Zeroes save files from the same console, and use that data to create unique content for people who have bought both games.

An in-game model of Hideo Kojima has not yet been discovered in The Phantom Pain yet, and it is not clear if the game designer’s appearance goes beyond a Mother Base profile.

Kojima has previously made cameo appearances in several previous Metal Gear titles, such as the PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and the GameCube remaster, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes.

  • This New Xbox One Will Boot Up 20 Percent Faster

This New Xbox One Will Boot Up 20 Percent Faster

Microsoft on Monday announced the Xbox One Elite Bundle. The console featured in the bundle comes with a new 1 TB solid state hybrid hard drive (more on that later) and the new Elite controller. The package costs $500, and Microsoft describes it as “the ultimate gaming experience.”

[Update: Microsoft has detailed the Xbox One Elite bundle release date and price for the UK; It will sell for £400, and be available from November].

The new SSHD should be an improvement over the existing hard drive. That’s because it “stores frequently accessed files on a solid state partition and optimizes system performance so you can get to the action up to 20 percent faster from energy-saving mode,” Microsoft said in a news release.

In October 2014, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said improving Xbox One load times was high on his priority list.

As previously announced, the Elite Xbox One wireless controller, which also works with PC on Windows 10, features interchangeable paddles and hair trigger locks. It also lets you adjust the trigger minimum and maximum values, thumbstick sensitivity, and button assignments. In short, you can assign any of the controller’s 14 different inputs to the ABXY buttons, paddles, D-pad, triggers, and thumbstick clicks

The Xbox One Elite bundle launches worldwide in November for $500. In the United States, it will be sold exclusively through GameStop and Microsoft stores for the month of November. The new Elite controller, meanwhile, launches in October and sells for $150 by itself.

Finally, Microsoft also announced today a “Lunar White” version of the standard Xbox One controller. It sports all the new refinements, a slick-looking color scheme, and “improved grip texture.” In the US, this controller will be sold only at GameStop, where it will cost $65 starting in late September.

What do you make of Microsoft’s new hardware announcements today? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story reported that this new Xbox One would load games 20 percent faster. In fact, the console will power up 20 percent faster from the energy-saving mode. GameSpot regrets the error.

  • Every Mad Max Movie Is Now on Steam

It’s not just the new Mad Max game from Avalanche Studios that launched today, September 1, on Steam. Valve has announced that all four Mad Max feature films are also available today through the PC platform.

Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) are all now available on Steam. You can even buy a bundle that comes with the new Mad Max game and Fury Road for $72 or another bundle with the game and all four movies for $106. More pricing details follow.

“Just about every gamer is a fan of the Mad Max anthology,” Valve’s Doug Lombardi said. “As Steam’s library of games and movies continue to grow, the Mad Max game and film anthology represent major offerings for the platform.”

Valve launched movies in March, and has added about 100 since then. Click through the links below to buy the Mad Max movies on Steam. Note that the movies are only available to purchase, not rent.

GameSpot’s Mad Max review scored the game a 6/10. Below is a passage from critic Peter Brown’s review.

“Mad Max’s combat system is too dumbed down to enjoy, and repetitive activities such as searching for scrap and invading small enemy camps gets old fast. Mad Max offers some great experiences, but for a game that tries to impose the realities of survival on you, it does a poor job of following up on this pressure. Mad Max is too focused on providing you with an open-world that’s filled with missions, and not focused enough on making those missions worth your time.”

  • Ace Attorney 6 Revealed in Famitsu

Publisher Capcom appears to have confirmed that it is working on a new entry in its popular courtroom drama game series, Ace Attorney.

According to the latest edition of Japan’s games magazine Famitsu, Ace Attorney 6 will be playable during the Tokyo Games Show, which runs from September 17 to 20. That gives Capcom just a little over two weeks to announce the project officially; GameSpot has contacted the company for clarification.

Kotaku, which has translated the Famitsu story, claims that the sixth main instalment in the Ace Attorney series will feature a new system that “enables quicker gameplay,” though specifics have not been disclosed.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney first shipped almost ten years ago, in October 2005, and was lauded by critics upon release. GameSpot’s Ace attorney review explained that the game was “unique and wonderfully capitalizes on the DS touch screen and microphone functionality.”
