  • Gears of War Creator Defends Free-to-Play for LawBreakers

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski’s next game, LawBreakers, will use a free-to-play business model. But Bleszinski says in a new interview that Boss Key and publisher Nexon are still determining exactly how this will work. He admits that free-to-play doesn’t have the best reputation, but stresses that every game is different, and LawBreakers hopes to use free-to-play “in a good way that makes gamers happy.”

“We’re still playing around with the monetization model,” he told Game Informer. “We want it to be positive. A lot of core gamers hear free-to-play and it’s like feeding a child asparagus. There is a bad reputation to it and I get it.”

Bleszinski added: “And we’re not ready to rule out the idea that maybe if you give us $20 bucks and you can have early access and then when the game launches you get a special pack that other people pay $20 bucks for. How you do free-to-play is unique for each product, and we want do to do it in a good way that makes gamers happy. We’re open to unique ideas for how we get this game to market.”

At PAX Prime last weekend, Boss Key released the first gameplay trailer for LawBreakers–and it looked great. We also spoke with Bleszinski on our stage show; check out the interview in the video above.

Bleszinski revealed there that Boss Key is considering bringing LawBreakers to console some day, though he stressed that the PC version is the studio’s focus at this time. If a console version were to happen, Boss Key would have to find a partner to port the game, as the studio is too small to develop it internally.

  • Official Fallout Monopoly Board Game Revealed

Official Fallout Monopoly Board Game Revealed

A special Fallout themed Monopoly set has been officially announced by Bethesda, and its release is expected to coincide with the Fallout 4 launch date in November.

Details of the board game first emerged when a Shacknews journalist published on Instagram a picture of its contents box. In the comments section of that Instagram photo, one user asked the board game’s designer–USAopoly–about when and where it would be released. “This November only at GameStop,” was the manufacturer’s response. It is not clear if the board game will ship outside of North America.

Following this, the official Fallout Twitter account announced the product, writing: “When Fallout 4 monopolizes family time, you can always bust this out.”

    — Fallout (@Fallout) September 3, 2015

This does not mark the first time a video game has cross-pollinated with Monopoly. Other special editions of the classic real-estate management board game includes themes based on Assassin’s Creed, Legend of Zelda, and World of Warcraft.

Fallout 4, the long-awaited next entry in Bethesda’s acclaimed series, is set to ship across Europe and North America from November 11.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight PC Patch Works Miracles, But Is Pulled

Batman: Arkham Knight PC Patch Works Miracles, But Is Pulled

Publisher Warner Bros on Wednesday deployed a patch for the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight, but has since removed it due to the update apparently going live prematurely.

The 626MB patch was delivered to a specific group of Steam customers who had all agreed to play beta builds of the game. Early reports from these users were overwhelmingly positive. However, Warner Bros quickly pulled the patch just hours after it first went live, apparently due to the new build being released ahead of schedule.

Warner Bros has previously stated that the Arkham Knight PC patch should go live at some point in September.

Some beta participants who played the patched version wrote on a Steam discussion board that Arkham Knight’s PC frame rate was stable and smooth, and early indications suggest that many of the game’s notorious launch problems have been resolved.

One beta user, going by the name ‘Saerydoth’, wrote: “Holy…wow. Just opted into the beta patch. EVERYTHING maxed, all gameworks settings on. 4GB used out of 6 (980ti). Constant 60fps. I think I might’ve dropped to 55 once when driving but it’s butter smooth.”

Another user, going by the name ‘Snot’, published a screengrab of the extensive new graphics options in the game, which also includes a gauge that shows how much V-ram is being used. That image can be found below.

Batman: Arkham Knight shipped on June 23 across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. However, upon release, a mass of reports from players had indicated that the PC edition was in an incomplete state.

That led to a punishing two weeks for the publisher, as fans continued to discover a whole litany of technical problems with the PC build. After apologising and announcing its intention to build a patch to fix the numerous problems, Warner Bros decided to pull the title from Steam. The game has been unavailable on PC since.

Developer Rocksteady recently released a statement saying it was working on remedying the port’s problems, while more significant ongoing work was being done. Posting on Twitter, studio co-founder and director of the Batman: Arkham series, Sefton Hill, said the studio has its “best engineers” helping to fix the issues.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros was accused of having known of Arkham Knight’s PC Problems “for months” prior to release, however these claims–purportedly from internal QA employees–are not proven.

  • New Mortal Kombat X Character DLC Pack Teased

New Mortal Kombat X Character DLC Pack Teased

Click to drag the slider and reveal the brighter image.

NetherRealm Studios has hinted at the next new characters coming to fighting game Mortal Kombat X as part of a downloadable content pack. The image above was shared by the studio’s creative director Ed Boon on Twitter with the accompanying text, “Tomorrow?”

It’s hard to make out which character shadows are being shown, so I’ve bumped up the brightness to help make the silhouettes clearer. NetherRealm Studios recently released four new characters as part of its Kombat Pack. The pack included Jason Voorhees, Tanya, Predator, and Tremor, who was the last confirmed DLC character. Each character can also be purchased individually.

Since then Boon has teased that more new characters are on their way, confirming that news would be shared this week. A livestream in July labeled Tremor as being the final character in “Kombat Pack 1.” Previously, this was only ever called the Kombat Pack, suggesting there will be at least one more.

  • Kojima's Emotional Tribute to Metal Gear Fans

Kojima's Emotional Tribute to Metal Gear Fans

Hideo Kojima and Konami have released a short documentary in which the acclaimed series designer discusses the hardship and challenges he faced creating Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The ten-minute “MGS 5 Debriefing” video was published on Konami’s official website late on Tuesday as the game launched worldwide, and it shows Kojima meeting with key people involved in the production of The Phantom Pain.

Later in the video, Kojima also pays a visit to the family of Sean Gillespie, a fan of the series who was suffering from cancer during the production of The Phantom Pain.

Gillespie died on February 8, but had written a letter to Kojima when the MGS V project had entered a brutal crunch period. The Metal Gear creator said the letter served as inspiration to the team to push on with development.

Problems between Kojima Productions and Konami have been extensively documented by the press. In March, GameSpot revealed that power struggles between the two parties had reached the stage where most senior staff were ready to leave the company after MGS V shipped. It is unclear if their working relationship has restored since.

Kojima embraces Troy Baker, a voice actor who plays Revolver Ocelot in MGS5

Some in the press have commented that Kojima’s debriefing video is, in fact, a farewell message. It is not clear if this is accurate.

In the video, Kojima says “my energy comes from the players. My mission is to exceed their expectations. It’s all that matters to me.”

Kojima’s final words in the video: “I’ve been working on making MGS V the best it can possibly be, balancing and tweaking right up until the very end. Players will not be disappointed. I’m sorry it took so long, but I feel we’ve created something very special and I hope everyone will enjoy it. Thank you all.”

Elsewhere in the short documentary, Kojima discusses the unique responsibility and challenges involved in working on the same game series for 28 years.

It also pays a tribute to Gillespie, describing him as “a Metal Gear fan and honorary member of the team whose messages of support and love for the series gave us strength during our toughest hour.”

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Sounds Likely

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the celebrated 2011 RPG from Square Enix and Eidos Montreal, could be added to the lineup of Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility.

A tweet from the official Deus Ex Twitter account teases: “We’re working to make it happen. 🙂 We’re hoping to have good news soon!” The tweet came in response to a fan who asked about it.

Human Revolution has amassed more than 12,000 votes on the Xbox One backwards compatibility website. Of course, this does not guarantee that it will come to Xbox One.

At Gamescom in August, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said Microsoft was in positive talks with “all publishers” about allowing their Xbox 360 games to play on Xbox One. Ultimately, publishers get to decide.

“We’re having great conversations with all the publishers about backward compatibility,” he said at the time. “It’s really been a good time for something like backwards compatibility to come around, because so many of the publishers have built more service-based games where they’re able to find a business opportunity in the longevity of games.”

Xbox One backwards compatibility is available now for Preview Program members. Access to this private, invite-only program just got tougher, too. But everyone will get to enjoy backwards compatibility in November, when the feature rolls out publicly. At that time, there will be more than 100 supported titles. The final list has not been announced, but click here to see all of the confirmed titles so far.
