  • Everything You Need to Know About Destiny's Major Patch

To call Destiny‘s upcoming expansion huge would be an understatement.

The Taken King is retooling so many of the shooter’s systems, and changing so many things about the game we’ve come to know, that we can safely call it massive. Destiny is becoming a different beast entirely.

Next week, to lay the foundation for the expansion, Bungie is releasing Destiny’s biggest patch. And there’s a lot to take in, from minor changes to sweeping transformations. Some of them are tweaks to the user interface. Others alter the way we track objectives. A much-maligned character stat is getting axed in favor of a more user-friendly approach.

So in preparation for The Taken King expansion releasing Sept. 15, we’ve outlined some of the major differences between Destiny’s first year, and Destiny as it will exist after Patch 2.0 on September 8. In the video below, we’ve also outlined a few things you can do to get ready for the expansion’s launch.

    New Experience System

Destiny’s Light rating was one of the main barriers to many players. In the game’s first year, the stat was an intrinsic property for certain pieces of armor, and finding specific items was the only way to reach higher character levels. Because of this, jumping from one level to the next could be a slog if you didn’t know exactly what to be working toward.

But with the new patch, Bungie is completely retooling how Light works. Instead of dictating which pieces of armor you pursue, Light is now an average of your overall attack power and defense rating. It’s nowjust an indicator of how good your inventory is, and doesn’t create any barriers on your search for gear. Your character level, on the other hand, is now dictated by experience. This means you can play however you want, and still rank up to the 34 level cap (or 40, when The Taken King goes live).

For a more in-depth look at this new mechanic, watch the video below.

    Armsday Events

Much like weekly cooperative strikes, or the mysterious merchant Xur who appears every weekend, Armsday quests are scheduled events aimed at keeping dedicated Destiny players coming back every Wednesday. Essentially, the gunsmith Banshee-44 will lend weapons to you. By completing specific challenges attached to each weapon, you’ll increase your reputation rating with the gunsmith, thereby unlocking better weapons, and granting access to Foundry Orders. These ensure you’ll have a decent weapon waiting for you during the subsequent week’s Armsday event.

Bungie is kicking this mechanic off early, so as of September. 9, players can beginstart increasing their reputation, and get a head start on progress through The Taken King’s new content.

    Questification

One of the biggest changes coming to Destiny with The Taken King is what Bungie calls “questification.” MMO players should feel more at home after the expansion, as more characters will grant quests, and they’ll be easier to track. In Destiny’s first year, story missions and strikes were only outlined in the Director view, when looking at planetary maps from orbit. But now, simply bringing up your Ghost’s scanner will show which quests you have active, and where they can be completed.

Next week’s patch will begin this process. New quests will pop up once The Taken King launches, but Patch 2.0 will give players a preview of this update to mission structure. The Quest Log tab shows which quest chains are active, what faction or character they were granted by, and what rewards to expect upon completion.

    Bounties

As of now, we have room for 10 active bounties at once. Following Patch 2.0, however, we’ll have space for 16. This means those frequent visits to the Tower won’t be necessary, and you can stay out in the solar system longer, content with the promise of 16 bounties’ worth of experience upon return.

In our video on how to prepare for The Taken King, we strongly encourage you to have completed bounties ready when the expansion launches. This guarantees huge amounts of experience right off the bat, granting access to higher-level gear from the outset.

New Modes and Maps in PvP

Beginning with patch 2.0 and continuing until The Taken King’s launch one week later, every Destiny player will have free access to the expansion’s new modes and maps.

The modes include Rift and Mayhem. Rift functions like a neutral capture-the-flag match, in which you have to charge your character in the center of the map, before destroying the enemy team’s rift on the opposite side. Mayhem, on the other hand, is more lighthearted–Super abilities recharge at a much faster rate. You’ll see a plethora of Golden Gun kills, Titans smashing into the ground left and right, and Warlocks hurling explosive bolts of Void energy through the air.

One note: these modes, as well as the eight new PvP maps, are only free for one week. Once The Taken King launches, you’ll have to pay for them.

So there you have it: Destiny is undergoing some major changes, and veteran players will have a lot to get used to when Patch 2.0 launches. We’ve had hands-on time with the new patch, so come back to GameSpotfor our impressions on Sept. 8.

  • Game of the Month August 2015

Game of the Month August 2015

You’d think August would be a slow month for video games as we march inexorably towards the busy fall season. But in 2015, this was not the case. There was more than enough to tide us over until the highly-anticipated launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on the first day of September. Whether it was action you were looking for, something a little more mellow and retrospective, or an adventure packed with jump scares and gore, the end of summer had something for nearly everyone.

August, you could say, was the month of choice for some of the more sought-after indie games. The month kicked off with Galak-Z, an anime-inspired shooter from developer 17-bit that captured our hearts and inspired us to best our own runs over and over again. Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell launched his next game, Volume. Volume hit the sweet spot for those of us craving something stealth-based; a story reminiscent of Robin Hood guided us through Bithell’s Metal Gear-inspired world, which seemed to take the best of Kojima’s tactical espionage adventures and distilled them into bite-sized puzzles. And mid-month, developer The Chinese Room launched its PlayStation 4 exclusive Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, a heartbreaking tale about love, loss, and the end of the world.

This month also saw the return of an old classic with new polish. Gears of War Ultimate Edition brought us back to where it all started, helping us relive our nostalgia with a fresh coat of paint. While the remastered edition wasn’t quite the same masterpiece as the original, we still found much to love. Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn–another PS4 exclusive–topped off the month, delivering us a brilliant survival horror game wrapped in slasher flick tropes.

When thinking back on August, it’s Until Dawn that we remember we think on most fondly. We here at GameSpot were captivated by it, dedicating ourselves to an overnight stream of the game and a horrifically entertaining death compilation. The game almost has no right being as good as it is; it surprised us, delighted us, and in the end we decided that there’s now way we can’t not applaud this engaging little gem.

  • Xbox One Getting 60fps Remastered Version of Castle Crashers Very Soon

The Behemoth announced today that Castle Crashers Remastered, a new version of the 2008 Xbox 360 game, will launch on September 9 for Xbox One. That’s just days away.

Remastered includes the expected technical improvements, including a 60fps frame rate (compared to 30fps for the original), as well as textures that are five times larger than those in the first game. In addition, players can look forward to various “performance updates” and gameplay tweaks, while you should also be able to find online games “easier and quicker,” developer The Behemoth claims.

What’s more, Remastered comes with a new minigame called Back Off Barbarian. See it in the video above.

Remastered will cost $15, but people who already bought the game on Xbox 360 will get the new version for free through September 20. On September 21, the price for returning players will go up to $5.

In addition, The Behemoth has announced that the original Castle Crashers (without the updates) will be playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. However, there is no word yet on when the game will arrive, either through the Preview Program or for everyone.

Castle Crashers (read GameSpot’s 8/10 review here) was originally released first on Xbox 360 before coming to PC and PlayStation 3 later. The Remastered version has been announced only for Xbox One.

The next game from The Behemoth is called Pit People, which is unlike anything the developer has made before.

  • Not Even a Tunnel Full of Cars Can Stop GTA 5's Train

Grand Theft Auto V players refuse to accept that there’s no way to bring the game’s train to a halt intact. If there is, jamming a tunnel full of vehicles is not the answer.

The video below surfaced this week on YouTube courtesy of user Redmar Belle. In it, a group of players join together in GTA Online to crowd the train tracks inside of a tunnel. A mix of land vehicles stand in the train’s way in an attempt to stop it, but–spoiler alert–they didn’t succeed.

In fact, things go so poorly that the player whose perspective we’re watching from ends up dead, though surprisingly the ensuing carnage doesn’t result in every vehicle being completely torn to shreds.

Technically, the train can be stopped, but only by destroying it with explosives laid along the track. That isn’t necessarily what players want; ideally, the train could be stopped and then hijacked, as you was possible in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In that game, you could drive the train around and make deliveries or–if you went fast enough–derail it. GTA V, however, only lets you drive the train during a specific mission; killing the conductor has no effect on its movement, and you can only get inside through the use of glitches.

If you’re looking for something more productive to do in GTA Online, a Labor Day weekend event is currently underway that offers bonus experience and in-game cash.

  • Metal Gear Solid 5 Recovers From Server Meltdown [Update 4]

[UPDATE 1: Online services have been restored on Xbox One.]

[UPDATE 2: Online services have been restored to PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Currently the only system not allowing access is PlayStation 4.]

[UPDATE 3: Online services have been restored across all systems. Konami says “measures have been taken to reduce burden on database, meaning that FOB multiplayer service may still take some to be fully restored.” The publisher remains cautious about potential future connectivity issues, not ruling out further server downtime.]

[UPDATE 4: Online services are patchy on PlayStation 4. As of 3:15 PM EDT, Konami could not guarantee stable service for the PS4 edition.]

    Original article follows

Konami is facing a fourth day of server connectivity woes with its latest triple-A release, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Since the game was released on Tuesday, Konami has continually communicated on social media with fans who have struggled to access MGS5’s multiplayer FOB mode. On Thursday, Konami took the game’s servers offline in order to perform technical maintenance. It has also established an alert page on its official website, giving players the most up-to-date information on the status of its servers.

While The Phantom Pain is predominantly a single-player game, and one that has been eulogised by critics, online problems have spread into some portions of the campaign mode too.

Specifically, The Phantom Pain allows players to transfer save data from its prequel, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. If players do so, they will be given various perks, such as valuable new recruits to their Mother Base. However, due to The Phantom Pain’s servers timing out so frequently, many players have been unable to transfer over their save data.

Other players report that, if they manage to connect online, some functions of the single-player mode–such as menu navigation–noticeably slows down.

Konami has “deeply apologised” for the downtime on several occasions.

  • Metal Gear Solid 5 Server Meltdown Enters Fourth Day

Konami is facing a fourth day of server connectivity woes with its latest triple-A release, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, with little sign of the issue being fully resolved before the end of the weekend.

Since the game was released on Tuesday, Konami has continually communicated on social media with fans who have faced problems with accessing MGS5’s multiplayer FOB mode.

On Thursday, Konami took the game’s servers offline in order to perform technical maintenance. It has also established an alert page on its official website, giving players the most up-to-date information on the status of its servers.

According to a translation of notes published on the alert page, resolving connectivity issues on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in particular may require “several days” to overcome.

“Early resolution has been considered difficult,” the publisher has said.

No timeline has been given for a server fix for the PlayStation 4, PC, or PlayStation 3 editions.

While The Phantom Pain is predominantly a single-player game, and one that has been eulogised by critics, online problems have spread into some portions of the campaign mode too.

  • New 007 Spectre Poster Is a Throwback

New 007 Spectre Poster Is a Throwback

A new poster for upcoming James Bond movie Spectre is a throwback of sorts. The new image shows the iconic British super-spy dressed in a white dinner jacket, reminiscent of past entries in the series like Octopussy, The Man With the Golden Gun, and Diamonds Are Forever, among others.

Seen behind Bond is a masked figure from Spectre‘s Day of the Dead scene.

Spectre is due out on October 26 in the UK, and will be followed by a worldwide release on November 6. It’s a direct sequel to the last three Daniel Craig-starring films, and features Christoph Waltz and the apparent return of SPECTRE, the villainous group from the Bond novels and early films.

The movie was directed by Sam Mendes, who says he may not return for the inevitable follow-up.

In other recent Bond news, Craig recently talked about how his Bond is “not as sexist and misogynistic” as previous incarnations. He also explained why there is a “great sadness” to the Bond character.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight PC Patch Goes Live

A long-awaited update patch, expected to fix a litany of problems with the PC edition of Batman: Arkham Knight, is now live on Steam.

Rocksteady’s latest action game has been delisted from the Steam store since June, when customers discovered an extraordinary number of graphical and performance bugs and glitches.

Fans expect this PC patch to remedy the vast majority of the game’s technical problems. The update was accidentally deployed to a small number of users on Wednesday, whose early impressions were thoroughly positive.

Details of Warner Bros’ latest patch can be found below.

Batman: Arkham Knight PC Patch Notes

    • Reduced frame rate hitches
    • Optimizations for system memory and VRAM usage
    • Improved performance on all GPUs (requires the latest drivers)
    • More Comprehensive In-Game Settings
    • Fixed low resolution texture bugs
    • Fixed hitches when running on mechanical hard drives (HDD)

Warner Bros has also listed issues that it wants to tackle in future updates. They are:

    • Adding support for SLI and Crossfire
    • Adding support for the latest DLC & Season Pass content
    • Adding support for additional updates such as Photo Mode
    • Continued improvements and bug fixing for a Windows 7 specific memory issue that occurs on configurations with 8GB of system RAM and some NVIDIA GPUs during extended game play
    • Continued improvements for Windows 10 specific issues on systems with some AMD GPUs

A spokesperson for Warner Bros wrote on Steam: “We would like to thank everyone for their patience and invaluable feedback. We’ll provide ongoing updates here as they are made available. In the meantime, please enjoy the game with the latest patch.”

Batman: Arkham Knight shipped on June 23 across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. However, upon release, a mass of reports from players had indicated that the PC edition was in an incomplete state.

That led to a punishing two weeks for the publisher, as fans continued to discover a whole range of technical problems with the PC build. After apologising and announcing its intention to build a patch to fix the numerous problems, Warner Bros decided to pull the title from Steam. The game had been unavailable on PC since.

Developer Rocksteady recently released a statement saying it was working on remedying the port’s problems, while more significant ongoing work was being done.

Posting on Twitter, studio co-founder and director of the Batman: Arkham series, Sefton Hill, said the studio has its “best engineers” helping to fix the issues.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros was accused of having known of Arkham Knight’s PC Problems “for months” prior to release, however these claims–purportedly from internal QA employees–are not proven.

At the time of going to press, Batman: Arkham Knight appears to still be unavailable on the Steam store.

  • Destiny's Taken King Crucible Content is Free for a Week Before Release

As part of the Destiny patch releasing next week, Bungie is making The Taken King expansion’s PvP content available for free–for one week, according to the developer’s weekly update.

The two game modes include Rift–essentially a neutral capture-the-flag mode–and Mayhem, in which every character’s super ability charges extremely fast.

The Destiny 2.0 patch releases Sept. 8, bringing several changes to Bungie’s multiplayer shooter. Voice actor Nolan North is replacing the work of actor Peter Dinklage throughout the game. Destiny’s bounty system, light levels, and bounties are also getting overhauled.

The Taken King expansion releases exactly a week after the patch, on Sept. 15, along with story content and a new level cap of 40. Bungie shared details about the upcoming King’s Fall raid, which releases three days after the expansion, tasking teams of Guardians with descending into the Hive dreadnaught in pursuit of Oryx.

In the same update today, Bungie also announced it’s extending the Moments of Triumph until Sept. 14, giving players the chance to pursue their last few–or one–before The Taken launches.

GameSpot has a plethora of Destiny news and previews on the horizon, so stay tuned as the patch and expansion release.
