  • Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Review, Blackout, Guides, And Everything We Know

    Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out now, and it continues the franchise’s history of explosive multiplayer, first-person shooter combat. Old mechanics and features return, such as the fan favorite Zombie mode, but the game implements several changes to the Black Ops formula. We’ve compiled everything we know about Black Ops 4 below.

    Black Ops has a pretty lengthy history. The first Black Ops, releasing in 2010, takes place during the Cold War in the 1960s, switching between CIA operatives Alex Mason and Frank Woods. 2012’s Black Ops 2 moved the story to 2025 and follows Alex’s son, David Mason. 2015’s Black Ops 3 continues the previous game’s journey into the future and focuses on operatives in 2065.

    The first Black Ops featured the first playable protagonists in a Call of Duty game to speak during gameplay, and not just cutscenes. Its sequel introduced the Grief and Turned variations to Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. The third game was the first Call of Duty title where Activision and Sony’s partnership created limited-time exclusive DLC content for PlayStation consoles.

    What Is Black Ops 4?

    Black Ops 4 is the seventh Call of Duty game developed by Treyarch, one of the many video game companies under the Activision umbrella. The game is the first Call of Duty title to lack a traditional single-player campaign, instead including individual missions that each focus on the backstory of one of Black Ops 4’s multiplayer Specialists. The feature is similar to the Operator missions from Rainbow Six Siege, but are more story-driven and tie together in an overarching plot. The missions take place between 2025 and 2065, making Black Ops 4 a sequel story to Black Ops 2 and a prequel to Black Ops 3.

    Release Date/Day One Update/Preloading

    Call of Duty Black Ops 4 launched on October 12 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game has a fairly large Day One update, so be sure your system of choice has enough hard drive space. The game comes with special Deluxe, Digital Deluxe, Pro, and Mystery Box Editions, all of which are detailed in our buying guide.

    Review

    After spending time with the game following its launch, we’ve published our full Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 review. In it, GameSpot reviews editor Kallie Plagge offers a look at each of the three main modes, writing, “Black Ops 4 isn’t short on content, and its three main modes are substantial. Multiplayer introduces more tactical mechanics without forcing you into them, and it largely strikes a good balance. Zombies has multiple deep, secret-filled maps to explore, though its returning characters don’t hold up and prove distracting. Finally, Blackout pushes Call of Duty in an entirely new direction, making use of aspects from both multiplayer and Zombies for a take on the battle royale genre that stands on its own. Sure, there isn’t a traditional single-player campaign, but with the depth and breadth of what is there, Black Ops 4 doesn’t need it.”

    Getting Started

    Black Ops 4 includes a lot of features and mechanics that might be familiar to an experience Call of Duty player, but completely foreign to franchise newcomers. If you need any assistance, turn to one of our Black Ops 4 guides, which should provide you with all the help you need to get started with multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout.

    Multiplayer, Maps, And Specialists

    For the first time in a Call of Duty game, Black Ops 4 ditches health regeneration. Firearms employ both hitscan and projectile damage, instead of just the former in the game’s new ballistics system. Predictive recoil patterns and weapon customization return. Together, it makes for a more tactical experience that promotes teammates working together instead of playing as a lone wolf. Several classic Call of Duty modes–including Zombies–return in Black Ops 4, but the game also features the series’ first battle royale mode, called Blackout.

    Black Ops 4 launches with 14 multiplayer maps–Frequency, Contraband, Seaside, Payload, Hacienda, Gridlock, Arsenal, Icebreaker, Morocco, Militia, Jungle, Slums, Firing Range, and Summit. In November, the Call of Duty classic map Nuketown will launch for free, making a total of 15 maps in the Black Ops 4 base game. More maps will launch later as paid post-launch DLC.

    Just like its predecessor, Black Ops 4 will feature Specialists in multiplayer. Each Specialist has their own unique loadout and is designed to handle specific tasks. There are 10 in Black Ops 4, six of which–Ruin, Prophet, Battery, Seraph, Nomad, and Firebreak–return from Black Ops 3. The other four–Recon, Ajax, Torque, and Crash–are completely new to the series.

    Blackout

    Blackout incorporates all the hallmarks of previous battle royale games. Up to 100 players drop onto a map and have to battle it out until only one player or team remains. Weapons and equipment can be scavenged from buildings, and vehicles can be found on the road and used to cross the map more quickly. The safe areas where players can survive gradually shrinks over time, forcing the survivors closer together into more hectic firefights. The mode can be played solo, or in squads.

    Blackout is a little different from games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. For one, the map in Blackout is fairly large and encompasses a wide variety of different terrains and landscapes instead of focusing on a single theme, like a forest or desert. Blackout is the largest battlefield seen in any of the Call of Duty games, incorporating numerous landmarks and Easter eggs from past titles. There’s also a slight PvE element to Blackout, as computer-controlled zombies wander around certain areas of the map. Killing them lets you earn special loot items from Call of Duty’s Zombie mode, like the Ray Gun and Cymbal Monkey.

    Zombies

    The cooperative Zombies mode returns in Black Ops 4, but this time it features two separate storylines for you to play. The first, titled Aether, follows the reestablished Zombies storyline from the first three Black Ops games. The second, called Chaos, features new characters–Scarlett, Stanton, Diego and Bruno.

    Exclusive PS4 Content

    Like the Call of Duty titles in recent years, Black Ops 4 will have content that’s exclusive to the PS4 for a limited time. This exclusivity period includes all seasonal events, new Specialists, and post-launch multiplayer maps. However, instead of the PS4 having a two-to-four week head start on the other system, the console will only have exclusive access to post-launch content a week early.

When you make your kills, the game slows down and zooms in to display a close-up view of the splattering gore. If you turn up the difficulty level, you’ll also have to take into consideration real-life sniper considerations like wind speed and direction, your breath and heartbeat, and gravity’s pull on the bullet.

    The first game in the trilogy, Sniper: Art of Victory, is a World War II shooter that didn’t fare so well in reviews, getting a 36 from our sister site Metacritic. The next installment, Sniper: Ghost Warrior got dinged for having odd bullet physics and bad enemy AI, though the online multiplayer mode fared better than the campaign. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 improved upon the others in nearly every way, with only a handful of minor problems keeping it from a wholehearted recommendation.

  • Prior To The Fallout 76 Beta Launch, Bethesda Has A Message For Fans

    Bethesda has released a statement to address the developer’s community just prior to the launch of the first Fallout 76 beta. This first beta comes to Xbox One on October 23 at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET and ends four hours later.

    In the statement, Bethesda highlights just how different Fallout 76 is from the previous games in the franchise. The developer cites the inspiration for Fallout 76 comes from wanting to try something new after feeling as if every previous Bethesda games had “similar DNA.” That said, Bethesda doesn’t want to alienate the fanbase its spent building over the years. “Our worlds, whether it be Fallout, Elder Scrolls, or the coming Starfield, are important places to us,” Bethesda wrote. “We do everything we can to treat them with care. We know they mean just as much to you.”

    Bethesda also acknowledged that it’s treating Fallout 76 a little bit differently from past Fallout titles. Before, the company said that its employees take a small break after the release of a game. With Fallout 76, Bethesda is looking at the game’s launch as if it were the starting line. “Given what we’re doing with 76, we know we’re opening everyone up to all new spectacular issues none of us have encountered,” Bethesda wrote. “Some we’re aware of, such as areas where performance needs to improve with lots of players.”

    Even though the first beta is exclusive to Xbox One, Bethesda is following up with another beta for PS4 and PC on October 30. Although the beta periods are only for a few hours, each one will offer the full Fallout 76 experience. You can only participate in the beta by pre-ordering Fallout 76.

  • Pokemon Go: Last Chance To Catch A Mewtwo

    The Legendary Psychic Pokemon Mewtwo made its debut in standard Raid Battles last month after initially being limited to EX Raids, giving many Pokemon Go players their first opportunity to capture one. If you haven’t yet done so, your time is running out, as Mewtwo is set to leave Raids very soon.

    The Legendary Psychic Pokemon is scheduled to depart from the game at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET on October 23, so you have until then to encounter one at Gyms. As is the case with all other Raid Bosses, you’ll first need to team up with other players in-person and battle it. If you manage to defeat the Legendary, you’ll earn a handful of Premier Balls and the chance to capture it.

    Mewtwo remains one of the most popular–and powerful–Legendary Pokemon in the entire series, making it a formidable challenge. On top of that, one of the possible Charged Attacks it can know is Focus Blast, which is super-effective against many Pokemon that would typically have an advantage over it. Your best bet is to challenge Mewtwo using Bug, Dark, and Ghost Pokemon such as Scizor, Tyranitar, and Gengar.

    A lot has been happening in Pokemon Go as of late. Earlier this week, Niantic rolled out the first wave of Gen 4 Pokemon, including the Sinnoh starters Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. There are also a handful of region-exclusive Gen 4 monsters, which have only been appearing in certain parts of the world. No Gen 4 Legendaries have debuted in Pokemon Go just yet, but one–Giratina–was teased at the end of the game’s latest trailer, suggesting it could be on its way fairly soon.

    Pokemon Go’s latest Community Day event took place on Sunday, October 21. During it, players had a much easier time of finding Beldum and hatching Pokemon.     My Hero Academia Game, One's Justice, DLC Characters Announced

    Bandai Namco’s latest anime brawler, My Hero One’s Justice, is set to arrive on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC later this week. Ahead of its release, the publisher has revealed a couple of DLC characters players will be able to get in the game, one of which will be free to everyone.

    Right from launch, Bandai Namco will offer Shoot Style Izuku Midoriya to all players as a free download. This version of My Hero Academia‘s main protagonist fights primarily using kicks. Once players have downloaded him, Bandai Namco says they’ll be able to purchase missions for Shoot Style Deku through the game’s store.

    Those who pre-order My Hero One’s Justice ahead of its release will get an additional bonus character: Endeavor, the No. 2 ranked hero in Japan and the father of Shoto Todoroki. If you don’t pre-order the game, you’ll still have the option to purchase Endeavor separately as paid DLC. Just as with Shoot Style Deku, everyone will also be able to buy missions for him through the game’s store once he’s been downloaded, although no pricing details have been announced yet.

    In addition to the aforementioned characters, Bandai Namco is releasing a day-one patch for My Hero One’s Justice when the game launches this week. The update will add Arcade mode, a ladder-style tournament that pits players against CPU opponents. Bandai Namco says that completing this mode with different characters will unlock an “exclusive item.”

    My Hero One’s Justice launches for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam on October 26. It’s the first game based on My Hero Academia to release in the West and features many of the series’ most recognizable characters, including Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, Tomura Shigaraki, All Might, and more.   • All The Games Xbox Is Bringing To PAX Aus

    PAX Aus takes place this week in Melbourne, and now Microsoft has joined PlayStation and Ubisoft in announcing all of the games it will bring to the mega-show.

    Microsoft’s booth on the show floor will include more than 80 Xbox One X consoles, with unreleased games like Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Battlefield V available to play. For Battlefield V, this will be 32-player multiplayer on the Rotterdam map for Conquest mode.

    PUBG will also be playable, featuring the War mode on the new map Sanhok. What’s more, Microsoft will have Forza Horizon 4 available to play, while the company is also bringing an actual McLaren 720S to its booth to show off.

    A number of indie games will also be playable in Microsoft’s booth, including Tunic, Bendy and the Ink Machine, Supermarket Shriek, and Ashen.

    Outside of the playable games, Microsoft is hosting an briefing called “Xbox Presents: Gaming for Everyone” at the EB Live Stage on Friday, October 26 at 1 PM. What’s more, ID@Xbox boss Chris Charla will be on panel called Indie Dev Support: THE CSR of the Industry at 6 PM that day.

    Additionally, Xbox is partnering with the NEXT Exhibit to show off its new Adaptive Controller. The controller will also be available at the Diversity Lounge, where streamer Hand Solo will give a presentation.

    PAX Aus kicks off on October 26 with a keynote address by Rhianna Pratchett, who worked on the Tomb Raider reboot and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. She also wrote Mirror’s Edge, Heavenly Sword, and the Overlord series. During her PAX Aus keynote, she’ll be engaging directly with fans, answering questions about any number of topics.

    GameSpot’s theatre, the GameSpot Dropbear Theatre, will have programming running Friday through Sunday. We’ll be hosting panels on Fortnite’s coverage in the mainstream media, voice acting featuring actors from Telltale’s The Walking Dead and Fallout 4, and hacking a video game, among other topics.     Also new for this year is that PAX Aus and another big-time Australian gaming show, the EB Expo, are joining forces. PAX Aus three-day tickets are sold out, but you can still buy single-day tickets for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday here on the event’s website.

    Forza Horizon 4: All Barn Find Locations And Vehicles (Spring Update)

    Forza Horizon is back for another year, and that means Barn Finds are back too. If you’re new to series, all you need to know is that as you play through Forza Horizon 4, you’ll periodically get a call telling you that there’s a beat-up old car somewhere for you to find on the map. This will unlock a particular Barn Find, and you’ll be given a rough area to search. But, it’s up to you to explore the zone and pinpoint the location of the barn yourself.

    Sometimes this is easy, and sometimes it can really tricky–barns can be in plain sight or hidden within a dense forest. But finding them is worth it–the rare and iconic cars will be restored over time and gifted to you for free, adding a nice boost to your Car Collection level. If you’re having trouble locating some of these Barn Finds, or just want to save yourself some time, this guide will help you find the exact location of the barns for particular cars.

    How To Use This Guide: We’ve provided screenshots of the barn locations on the world map, a photo of what it looks like in-game, and a shot of the restored car you’ll get. We suggest using these images along with Horizon’s Drone Mode (use RB to boost!) to quickly track these down.

    A Quick Note: Forza Horizon 4 features a version of Great Britain that has rolling seasons, which change every 7 real-world days. As such, there are a small handful of Barn Finds that are exclusive to Autumn, Winter, Summer, and Spring. At the time of writing, we’ve only experienced Autumn, Summer, and Winter, but we’ll update this guide with information about the other Barn Finds as the seasons change, so come back then!

    Additionally, there is one Barn Find that is exclusive to one of the game’s Properties, Bamburgh Castle, so you’ll have to cough up a cool 10 million Credits to buy and unlock that one. You may also encounter Barn Finds in a slightly different order to our list, but a quick reference of the World Map should let you know what you’re looking for.

    1986 Ford Escort RS Turbo

    This Ford Escort is was limited to just 5000 models when it was released back in the 80’s. It’s a C-Class vehicle in Horizon 4, and you can find its barn at the peak of a mountain in the Scottish Highlands, west of Glen Rannoch. Make sure you bring an AWD to climb those inclines!

    1993 Jaguar XJ220

    The XJ220 is built for racing and was the fastest production car from 1992-1993. It’s ranked S1, and you’ll find its barn tucked away on a private country road east of Ambleside.

    This rare Series 1 version of the E-Type roadster is a C-class in Horizon 4. You’ll find the barn just off a dirt road in the south of Tarn Hows.

    Who left this one to rust? The Lotus GT1 touring car is an S1 vehicle and hidden just west of Horizon 4’s slate quarry.

    A real British classic, the MGB is a D-Class car in a fetching gumboot green that will make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. This one’s hidden on a small hill on the edge of a strip of trees in Astmoor.

    1965 Mini Cooper S

    Who doesn’t love a Mini? Well, anyone who needs luggage space, I guess. Regardless, this D-class version of the classic little car is hidden in a small valley on the far west of the map, on the southern end of Derwent Water.

    1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STI

    Another classic rally staple, this 90’s WRX STI is only a B-class initially but is screaming for an upgrade. It’s hidden in a creepy part of Lakehurst Forest, by the side of a dirt road.

    1962 Triumph Spitfire

    Yet another British classic, the Spitfire convertible doesn’t have a lot of grunt, but is perfect for relaxing country drives. This one is hidden very sneakily within a thick patch of bushes and trees just outside the Express Railyard, which we spent far too much time in during our hunt.

    1998 TVR Cerbera Speed 12

    This high-performance concept car never went into production, but thanks to the magic of video games, you can own and drive one for free! It’s an S1 class vehicle, and its barn is located just east of the Greendale Airstrip.

    Spring Season Exclusive – Ford GT40 MKI

    This monstrous Ford GT can only be found in spring. You’ll find the barn near the Moorhead Wind farm.

    Summer Season Exclusive – 1962 Peel P50

    The adorable little D-class Peel micro-car is only available during summer. It’s hidden in a forest between Ashbrook and Broadway, and perfect for those quick trips down to the shops.

    Like the name suggests, this Aston Martin is only available during the autumn season. Another 60’s classic, only around 25 of these things were produced. You can pick it up very easily just south of the Horizon Festival Site, in a nice open field.

    Winter Season Exclusive – 1973 Land Rover Range Rover

    This hardy Range Rover is a great vehicle to tackle the ice and snow of Horizon’s Winter. You’ll find the barn on a small island in the middle of the Derwent Water lake, which is completely frozen over during winter.

    Pokemon Go‘s next Community Day is almost here. Niantic’s monthly event returns this Sunday, October 21, giving players around the world another opportunity to capture rare Pokemon, take advantage of in-game bonuses, and even add a special move to their repertoire.

    While every Community Day lasts three hours, the particulars of each event vary by month. To help you get prepared, we’ve rounded up all the information you need to know about October’s Community Day below, from its start time in each region to the bonuses that are available and featured Pokemon you’ll be able to catch.

    What Is The Featured Pokemon?

    During each Community Day, one particular species of Pokemon will appear in the wild much more frequently than usual, giving you a chance to further fill out your Pokedex. While the newly added Gen 4 Pokemon may be on all players’ minds right now, the featured Pokemon this month is Beldum, a Steel/Psychic-type first introduced in the series’ Gen 3 games, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire.

    Beldum is a highly sought after Pokemon, so you won’t want to miss your chance to catch as many as you can; not only is it fairly rare, it’s capable of evolving into Metagross, an especially powerful monster that would make a great addition to anyone’s team. You’ll also have a chance of finding a Shiny Beldum during the event.

    There’s an added benefit to capturing as many featured Pokemon as you can. Typically, if you manage to evolve the monster into its final form before the event ends, it will learn a move it normally isn’t able to. Such is the case with this month’s Community Day; if you evolve Beldum into Metang and then Metagross during the event hours, it’ll learn the powerful attack Meteor Mash.

    Any Metang that evolves during the event will learn the move, even if you’ve obtained it before the Community Day began. However, it will only be able to learn the move if it evolves during the event, which means you’ll have a fairly brief window of opportunity to get the attack. Fortunately, this time Niantic is giving players one extra hour after the Community Day ends to evolve Metang and learn Meteor Mash, so you’ll have a little more time than usual to get it.

    What Time Does It Start?

    Unlike most of Pokemon Go’s other real-world events, which are typically hosted at a particular location, each month’s Community Day takes place during a specific window of time, meaning you can participate from anywhere. The event is also available around the world, although its hours will vary depending on your region.

    Regardless of where you live, the Community Day runs for three hours, during which time you’ll find increased spawns of the featured Pokemon and be able to take advantage of the featured bonuses. These hours are typically consistent each month, so if you’ve participated in previous events, you’ll already know when it’ll be available. If you’re new to the game or simply need a refresher on its schedule, you can see the event hours for each region below.

    North America

    • 11 AM – 2 PM PT
    • 2 PM – 5 PM ET

    Europe, Middle East, and Africa

    • 11 AM – 2 PM BST
    • 10 AM – 1 PM UTC

    What Other Bonuses Are There?

    On top of increased spawns of a particular Pokemon, Niantic always offers players a helpful bonus to take advantage of during the Community Day. This time, Pokemon Eggs will hatch at a quarter of the distance they typically require, meaning you’ll be able to hatch Pokemon four times as fast while the event is running. There’s also one recurring bonus in each Community Day: any Lure modules that are used during the event will remain active for three hours, rather than their typical 30-minute duration.
