Red Dead Redemption 2: Guides, Tips, And Cheats

The release of Red Dead Redemption 2 is upon us. Rockstar’s new game officially launches tomorrow, October 26, on both PS4 and Xbox One, and it presents players with a massive, deep open world to explore. The main story alone will take you in the neighborhood of 50 hours to complete, and that’s before engaging in much of its side content–and all of this is to be followed by Red Dead Online in November.

To help you make the most of the experience, we’ve put together numerous guides and tips, tackling both specific aspects of the game and a broader array of things you should be aware of before starting. Rockstar has opted not to hold your hand with many features in the game, leaving it to you to either discover them or find them hidden away in menus. We’ll also be taking a look at some of these examples to ensure you’re aware of everything the game has to offer.

We’ve got plenty of other guides and tips on the way, and we’ll continue to update the list below with all of them. While you wait to actually get your hands on the game, be sure to check out our RDR 2 review.

    Cheats

    No Caption Provided

One potentially big aspect of the new game is cheat codes. Like GTA V before it, RDR 2 allows you to use cheats and even has an entire menu available for the feature. However, at this early stage, we don’t actually know what all of them are; at least some are cleverly hidden in newspapers in-game. We’ll be doing our best to hunt these down and will report back as they are uncovered–you can see those we’ve been able to confirm in our list of all the Red Dead 2 cheats. If GTA V is anything to go by, you may have the opportunity to get unlimited money, raise/lower your wanted level, and spawn horses at any time, though there’s no guarantee Rockstar’s approach to cheats hasn’t changed in the intervening years. In the meantime, we’ve also got a rundown on the best RDR2 cheats that are worth a try.

Do You Need To Play Red Dead Redemption First?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the third game in the Red Dead series, though it’s only closely connected to its direct predecessor. However, RDR 2 is a prequel, taking place years before the events of the first RDR. If you’ve played the previous game, you’ll recognize the names and faces of many of its characters, including RDR protagonist John Marston. We dive into whether you should play RDR first in our feature, but whatever choice you make, you should give our Red Dead Redemption story recap a look to refresh your memory–or fill in the holes for the first time.

    Tips To Know Before Starting

As with any game, it can be useful to start with certain knowledge in hand. That’s certainly true of RDR 2, which is a dense game full of various systems that interact with each other. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of key tips you should know before booting up the game for the first time. We’ve kept spoilers to a minimum, but you’ll want to be aware, for instance, that side missions can expire if you don’t get to them quickly enough.

    How To Make Money Fast

As an outlaw, you’re after money, but not necessarily out of sheer greed. Whether your motivation is the betterment of your gang and its members or because you simply want a new gun and horse, you’re going to want to get your hands on as much money as possible. With that in mind, we’ve put together a guide on how to make money quickly.

    Outfits And Climates

Among the ways Red Dead 2 tries to immerse you in its world is with its climates. You’ll have to account for temperatures if you want to maximize your performance, wearing appropriate clothing depending on where in the world you are. We’ve rounded up all of the outfits we’ve come across so far to give you an idea of what you can find.

Things The Game Doesn’t Tell You

As you play and share stories with friends, you may come to realize there are any number of things the game doesn’t tell you. There are various interesting details and tidbits you could miss because Rockstar isn’t throwing them in your face, so we’ve done our best to round up a number of these so you don’t miss out on some opportunities during the course of your adventures.

How Do Morality And Honor Work?

Among the many systems you’ll find in Red Dead 2 is honor. Arthur Morgan may be a criminal no matter what choices you make, but there are degrees to which he is a bad guy. That comes into play with morality and honor, as your actions will either boost or lower your honor. Pressing down on the D-pad allows you to see this at any time, and something as simple as greeting a passerby will allow you to build it up. Aside from how people react to you, it’s worth being aware of the implications of your honor–Good Guy Arthur will get discounts at stores, which is one way to save some cash.

    Some Side Missions Can Expire

If you’re a completionist, the thought of optional missions disappearing is downright awful. But whatever your approach to playing games like Red Dead 2, you should absolutely engage with some of the optional content involving your gang. These sequences feature some of the best character moment in the game, but if you advance far enough in the story, some of these missions will go away whether or not you’ve done them. You can find out more about how this works in our PSA on side missions expiring.

    How Do I Fast Travel?

Fast travel does exist in RDR2, although it’s not something you’ll do by selecting a point on your map and warping there. The means for quickly moving around involve using actual modes of transportation, such as stagecoaches. Provided you have the patience, you’re much better off running or taking your horse, because you’ll encounter some of the game’s most interesting content that way. But if speed is of the essence, consult our explanation of how fast travel works.

    All The Guns

As noted above, money is at a premium, so you don’t necessarily want to buy every weapon you lay your eyes on. You may want to plan ahead, so we’ve rounded up all of the guns we’ve discovered so far in order to give you a sense of what awaits.

Health, Stamina, Dead Eye, And Horse Cores And Bars Explained

One of the many new wrinkles in Red Dead 2 is the Core system, which dictates a variety of aspects of your character. It can be a bit complex to wrap your head around, with Cores influencing bars but bars being used before Cores, among other thing. Do yourself a favor and get a good grasp on this key system by checking out our guide to how Cores work.

  • Overwatch PTR's New Update Makes Major Changes To Four Heroes; Here Are The Patch Notes

Blizzard has announced a new update is available for testing on the Overwatch Public Test Region (PTR). The PTR is PC only, but the changes that end up working are also made available on Xbox One and PS4 when they go live in the main game.

The new update makes several major changes to Mercy, Reaper, Symmetra, and Roadhog. The cost of Mercy’s Ultimate is lowered by 15% and her healing per second is increased from 50 to 60, making her a more valuable healer. The spread pattern of Reaper’s shotguns has been made more consistent and the amount of health he gains from The Reaping ability has been raised, which increases his offensive potential in head-on fights. Symmetra’s primary fire beam charges 20% faster, raising her damage output significantly.

Roadhog has the largest changes in the new update. His Chain Hook starts cooling down as soon as it’s used and greatly reduces his victim’s speed. The spread pattern on Roadhog’s Scrap Gun has also been adjusted so both his primary and secondary fire deal more consistent damage. The knockback velocity of Whole Hog has also been increased so that Roadhog now sends enemies flying. All in all, Roadhog will be able to more consistently trap other players, deal massive damage, and clear them out so that he can do it again.

The full patch notes for the PTR update can be found on Blizzard’s website. We’ve outlined the major points below. Overwatch is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

  • Spooky New Update, Called The Abyss, Is Coming To No Man's Sky

Hello Games has announced the next titled update to come out for No Man’s Sky. It’s called The Abyss, and, according to Hello Games founder Sean Murray, it “focuses on some of the eerier elements of No Man’s Sky.”

In a blog post, Murray revealed that while “most of the team have been busy on weekly updates, a handful have been working on [The Abyss].” Like Next, the major titled update that released before it, The Abyss will be free for all No Man’s Sky players. Murray reveals the update is releasing “next week” but didn’t confirm a specific day or time. Considering the expansion’s name and spooky theme, it’s probable The Abyss will release prior to Halloween, or the day of.

Hello Games hasn’t yet revealed the contents of The Abyss either, although it sounds as if the update won’t be as large as Next. Next was No Man’s Sky’s largest update to date, implementing several huge changes, such as dangerous Xenomorph-like aliens, space pirates, fleet building, a true multiplayer experience, and more. Next also changed No Man’s Sky economy, transforming how you use certain materials and changing the value of certain elements. Building a reliable income in No Man’s Sky has been a bit harder since the launch of Next, but there are plenty of strategies for making money fast.

In our No Man’s Sky Next review, Justin Clark gave the update an 8/10, writing, “At its absolute best, No Man’s Sky is a measured, gentle experience where you are rarely the agent of change, but a perpetual visitor who’s constantly dwarfed by the magnitude of a universe neutral to your presence. It is not your job in these stories to colonize the universe. Your job is to comprehend it. Your job is to recognize the spirituality in it. The primary gimmick of No Man’s Sky, since day one, has been awe. The best things about the Next update feed that gimmick. While features like multiplayer and base-building certainly put more proverbial asses in seats, they’re also the least memorable additions to an otherwise thoughtful experience.”

No Man’s Sky is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

  • New Mid-Season Rainbow Six Siege Update Changes Operators; Full Patch Notes Listed

New Mid-Season Rainbow Six Siege Update Changes Operators; Full Patch Notes Listed

Ubisoft has announced a new update for Rainbow Six Siege that changes a few of the game’s Operators. The update comes halfway through Siege’s Year 3, Season 3–referred to as Operation Grim Sky–and makes adjustments based on the influence of the two newest Operators, Clash and Maverick.

The two Operators getting patched in the update are Maestro and Clash. Ubisoft outlined the changes the two would undergo in a blog post on Siege’s main website. Both Operators are Defenders. Ubisoft wants to make Maestro less confusing to use, and change Clash so that she performs more in line with the developer’s original plans for the Operator.

The update changes Maestro’s ALDA 5.56 so that its recoil matches that of other LMGs in the game. Currently, the ALDA 5.56 reduces recoil the longer it fires without aiming down the sights, but this has “led to confusion” where players try to aim as if recoil would increase with sustained fire.

    No Caption Provided

Clash is getting reduced weapon swapping speed between her shield and sidearm, and the delay before her shield’s charge refills will be doubled. Also, Attackers that Clash shocks will regain full mobility after only 0.5 seconds, instead of the existing 1.5 seconds. “Ultimately, we believe that this will further drive the idea that Clash is reliant on teammates, as opposed to an Operator that can exist completely independently,” Ubisoft wrote. “She is not intended to be able to hold half of the map by herself, and will now require the proper support from teammates to do so.”

    No Caption Provided

These changes were calculated as a part of both Operators’ Win Delta and Pick Rate. An Operator’s Win Delta is the percentage of how often said Operator is a part of a winning team. The Pick Rate is the percentage for how often an Operator is picked, regardless if they’re on a team that wins or loses. When graphed on a chart, Ubisoft is able to determine which Operators are over picked and too strong, over picked and too weak, under picked and too strong, or under picked and too weak.

Although there are no scheduled changes for any other Operators in this update, Ubisoft wants to patch both Lion and Glaz in the near future. The developer has two possible solutions for Lion, which should fix how “problematic” he is at higher level play. “One adjustment would remove the intel gathering aspect of his gadget, or we may go with the other, which will trigger more of a Jackal style ping,” Ubisoft wrote. For Glaz, Ubisoft wants to bring the Operator back to his original role as a sniper in the rear. Currently, Glaz is one of the best “site pushing” Operators who can lead the charge with a high-powered weapon.

Ubisoft held a Reddit AMA to address further details about the new update. The full patch notes for the update can be read below.

  • How Long Is Spider-Man's The Heist DLC?

The story in Marvel’s Spider-Man continues in The Heist, the first piece of a three-part DLC expansion called The City That Never Sleeps. The Heist includes several old characters and a few new ones, but primarily focuses on Peter’s ex-girlfriend Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat.

The Heist is about three hours long in total, including all story missions and optional side quests and activities. An hour of that time is devoted to the story of Black Cat’s return to New York. She’s stealing flash drives from members of the prominent crime families in the city, and Peter and Mary Jane work together to both figure out why and discover a way to stop her before she starts a gang war. The first half of the story involves a new type of stealth mission and plenty of chase sequences, while the latter half includes a Mary Jane stealth mission and a powerful new enemy type that utilizes a minigun. Standard combat missions are sprinkled throughout, and enemy base missions are dropped entirely.

The remaining two hours of the DLC consist of the The Heist’s new side quests, which are mostly variations of what can be found in the base game. Instead of hunting backpacks, for example, you’ll be looking for the art that Felicia’s father has left hidden around the city. The only new side activity involves using the Spider-Bot to look for bombs under cars. The new Screwball Challenges–which replace the Taskmaster Challenges–will probably take up most of your time. They’re similar to what you had to do in the main game’s challenges, but you’ll also be tasked with capturing your web-slinging or combat moves on camera at the perfect moment to rack up a higher score.

Minor spoilers for a new Spider-Man villain introduced in the first 20 minutes of The Heist follow.

The Heist truly feels like a first part, ending in a way that implies its story isn’t finished, and will continue in later DLC. Although it seems as if Black Cat’s piece of the tale is complete at the end of The Heist, her actions bring the Spider-Man villain Hammerhead back into the wall-crawler’s life. Insomniac has not confirmed which character will be the focus of Turf Wars, the second part of The City That Never Sleeps, but The Heist makes a good case that we can expect to see Spidey go up against the gangster with a steel skull fairly soon.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is exclusive to PS4. The City That Never Sleeps continues with Turf Wars in November and Silver Lining in December.

  • Two Really Hard Indie Ports Are Coming To Switch–One Acclaimed, The Other Forgotten

Two Really Hard Indie Ports Are Coming To Switch–One Acclaimed, The Other Forgotten

Cellar Door Games has announced that both Rogue Legacy and Full Metal Furies are getting Switch ports. Both games will release on Nintendo’s console on November 6.

Both of Cellar Door Games’ titles are very difficult, but not unfair for players with the right amount of patience. Rogue Legacy is a single-player roguelike that first released in 2013 to critical acclaim. Despite being a multiplayer co-op game, Full Metal Furies is no less challenging, and the 2018 game features a meta narrative that is reminiscent of what’s found in games like Doki Doki Literature Club and Nier: Automata.

In our Rogue Legacy review, Britton Peele gave the game an 8/10, writing, “It’s almost unfair to compare Rogue Legacy to other games that emphasize permanent death. It doesn’t have the secrets of Spelunky and it’s more predictable than The Binding of Isaac, yet at the end of every game comes a desire to hop right back in, spend your gold on some upgrades and rack up more monster kills, something the game encourages with a challenging new-game-plus option that appears after the credits roll. Whether you play it on your home console or on the go, it’s worth exploring Rogue Legacy’s castle again and again and again.”

    No Caption Provided

Full Metal Furies is a four-person co-op game that presents itself as a simple arcade title, but hides a difficult puzzle mechanic. You and up to three friends play as four girls who are on a mission to destroy the massive Titans that have taken over their world. Each girl has unique attacks and abilities, allowing them to take on the roles of a tank, brawler, short-range support, and long-range support. Teamwork is key if you want to discover the game’s secrets and hidden ending. Full Metal Furies’ story is heart-warming, with both humorous banter and eye-rolling puns.

Rogue Legacy is already available on Xbox One, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and PC. Full Metal Furies is currently available on Xbox One and PC.

  • Drake Now Co-Owns A Gaming Brand

Canadian rapper Drake, who made headlines earlier this year when he streamed Fortnite with Ninja, is now investing in gaming in a much bigger way.

Drake, along with entertainment business mogul Scooter Braun, have invested an undisclosed amount of money into the ESports brand “100 Thieves.” The company was founded by former professional gamer Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag and Cleveland Cavaliers chairman Dan Gilbert.

    — 100 Thieves (@100Thieves) October 23, 2018

“With Drake and Scooter’s support, we’re going to build a lasting brand on the back of the content and apparel that our fans have come to love, aggressively expand into more games, scale our apparel business, and build a world-class management team,” Nadeshot said in a statement.

Drake and Braun will become “strategic advisors” for 100 Thieves. In addition to Drake and Braun, 100 Thieves recently received investment money from Sequoia Capital, WndrCo, Tao Capital, Green Bay Ventures, and Advancit Capital, as well as Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

100 Thieves bills itself as a “lifestyle, apparel, and esports organisation” that owns teams competing in professional tournaments for games like Call of Duty, League of Legends, Fortnite, and Clash Royale.

Red Dead Redemption 2's Most Intriguing New Details And Features (So Far)

As is to be expected from a new project that Rockstar has been working on for years, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an incredibly dense open-world game that’s jam-packed full of details. We recently got to go hands-on with the high-anticipated sequel, and while playing we discovered numerous mechanics and details that go above and beyond those from the original Red Dead Redemption. While the game features improvements to pre-existing mechanics, there are light survival systems this time around. These require you to pay attention to things like your body temperature, gun maintenance, and meat expiration. As fans of the original, all of these new details are surprising and unexpected. But what has us the most enthused about it all is how these mechanics are likely to foster tons of ridiculous shenanigans in the game’s world–especially once Red Dead Online releases.

We got to experience many of the new systems at work–most of which you can read about in our comprehensive feature compiling them all. But there were some fascinating standouts we wanted to highlight that we feel will contribute to some of the game’s most memorable and entertaining moment-to-moment experiences. Included in this feature are nine of the most unexpected mechanics and details in Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you haven’t already seen our Red Dead Redemption 2 preview covering the story missions we saw, make sure to read it for our in-depth impressions on the game. Though, if you want to get caught up with everything there is to know about Red Dead Redemption 2, check out our roundup of everything we’ve learned about RDR2. In the meantime, what details are you most excited to experience in Red Dead Redemption 2? Let us know in the comments below.

    Clothes Make The Outlaw

The game’s clothing customization options are comprehensive–each character will have different sets to coincide with hot and cold weather conditions. The type of clothes you wear will affect Arthur’s performance. For example, if you wear a weighty jacket during a hot summer day, your running stamina will take a big hit.

Other customizations will allow layering and minor adjustments, like the option to roll up your sleeves or tuck your pants into your boots. Whatever you end up choosing, you’re free to craft Arthur into the high plains drifter you want him to be.

You Can Fire Warning Shots And Whistle For Fun

By having your gun unholstered and holding Up on the d-pad, you can fire warning shots into the air. This is handy for intimidating people, scaring off animals, or generally being a rowdy buffoon while you’re riding around.

Speaking of possible buffoonery, you can even whistle at people to get their attention or call your horse. And if you keep holding down the button, you can keep whistling until Arthur runs out of breath. Imagine combining both warning shots and whistling; you’ll become the countryside menace you’ve always dreamed of being.

Your Guns Can Degrade And Jam

    No Caption Provided

You need to take care of your weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2. You have the option to clean them, which is incredibly important to do regularly because guns can jam mid-fire due to disrepair and environmental conditions. You don’t want to be caught with a rusted gun–lest you seek to dig yourself an early grave.

Hunted Materials Can Rot And Be Damaged

The components you acquire from hunting all have an expiration date. If you’re not careful, time will eventually take its toll and both the fresh pelt and carcass you’ve acquired will start to rot and attract vermin, reducing its value and making you generally unpleasant to be around. Not only that, but if you use a firearm to kill an animal as opposed to an arrow or knife, its pelt will be damaged and will sell for less at local stores.

    Cleaning, Grooming, And Feeding Yourself

Speaking of unpleasantness, NPCs will react not just to the stink of your rotting deer corpse, but also if you haven’t taken a bath in a while. Arthur needs to get clean and change his clothes every once in a while, since townsfolk may refuse to talk or serve him based on his appearance–having blood on your jacket doesn’t attract the best reactions.

Time also has an effect on Arthur’s hair, which actually grow longer. Customizing Arthur’s haircut and facial hair styling is also dependent on length since you’re allowed to cut things shorter, but won’t have access to options that require more hair–a more realistic take on customization compared to GTA V. Of course, you’re welcome to not pay attention to grooming. In fact, you can totally rock the mountain man look by just letting Arthur’s hair and facial hair grow to its max.

Arthur will need to eat to keep his health and stamina meters up, but will also lose and gain weight depending on his food intake. He’ll have to stay active in order to keep in top shape.

    You Will Get A Camera

    No Caption Provided

We started a side quest during our time with Red Dead Redemption 2, and the mission giver handed Arthur a camera. This camera could be used at any time via your inventory, and yes, the first thing we did was take a selfie.

These aren’t arm-out handheld selfies, though. The mode is titled “self-portrait” and will frame Arthur’s whole body as if the camera were set up on a tripod. You’ll be able to adjust expressions and poses, too–expect to see a whole bunch of self-portraits depicting Arthur squatting in front of various things on Twitter once the game releases.

    You Can Lose Your Hat

If you’re not careful, you can easily lose your hat in the midst of a shootout. If you drop your hat, you need to physically pick it back up to get back to looking like a proper outlaw. Though, if you ride away from your hat, it’ll appear as an icon on the map. However, it will reappear back on your horse if you go too far away. Alternatively, Arthur can swap his hat for any other one that just happens to fall off someone else’s head. Sometimes you just have to adjust your style on the go.

There’s A Killcam That Changes Depending On Your Honor

When you take out the final opponent during a gunfight, a killcam will frame that final blow a la Max Payne 3. This will change depending on Arthur’s moral standing: If you’ve been a naughty cowboy, these kill cams will be gorier. If you’ve been upstanding and honorable, they’ll be framed in a more heroic fashion like those from the classic film Westerns of old.

    You Can Break Enemy’s Weapons

Speaking of heroic behavior: if you want to go the more non-lethal route, it’s possible to shoot weapons out of enemy hands. Not only that, but you can even shoot at their weapons and break them. This seems like a handy technique if you’re looking to be an outlaw with a heart of gold as opposed to a straight-up cold-blooded killer.

    Catch A Stage Show

    No Caption Provided

Assuming he isn’t too stinky to make it past the ushers, Arthur can kick back and catch a show at the local theater. We’re curious the sorts of genre of theater you’ll be able to see or what Arthur like watching.

You Can Dance (If You Want To!)

If you find yourself at camp and the mood strikes you, you can break a leg and dance with your gang. The simple moves in the trailer seems fairly traditional, but we’ll put good money on there being sillier options whenever Red Dead Online launches.

    Horse Dressage And Drifting Techniques

Horses are an important part of Red Dead Redemption 2, but it seems like they’re far more capable creatures than they’ve ever been in previous games. During our hands-on, we were able to rear our horse on its hind legs, perform drifts to change direction quickly (apologies to equestrian enthusiasts), and move our horse precisely by performing dressage techniques.

How To Unlock Black Ops 4 Characters In Blackout Mode

You’ll notice that there are a lot of characters to unlock in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode. With a total of 29 characters, the battle royale mode features a variety of characters from past Blacks Ops multiplayer, zombies, and story campaigns. If you’re vying to get them all, you’ll need to do a little legwork.

To unlock most of these characters, you’ll often need to complete a specific set of challenges associated to them. After finding a special item for the character on the map, you’ll activate this special challenge, which often includes getting kills with a specific weapon, taking out zombies, or using specific support items.

Below you can find a list of all the characters you can unlock. It’s worth noting that not every character in the character select menu is unlockable yet; we assume they’ll be made available at a later date. We’ll be sure to update this feature as that information becomes available, as well as provide more detail on the characters we’re currently missing.

If you’re new to Blackout mode, be sure to check out guide highlighting tips you should know before starting. You can also read our informative feature that details Black Ops 4 as a whole in all of its modes. For folks more curious about how Blackout compares to Fortnite and PUBG, check out our in-depth comparison feature. Otherwise, be on the lookout for more Black Ops 4 guides in the coming days.
