Star Wars Episode 8 Director Reveals New Image, Says Shooting is Nearly Finished

With The Force Awakens having now finished its theatrical run and Rogue One entering reshoots ahead of a December release, the next part of the Star Wars saga, Episode VIII, is nearing the ending of principal photography. Director Rian Johnson has posted a new picture on Tumblr, featuring some Jedi robes and the words “In the home stretch.” Check it out below:

Episode VIII has been shooting since February, predominately in the UK, but with some location work in Croatia. Last month, on-set images of the Millennium Falcon were leaked.

Unsurprisingly, very few details about the movie’s plot are known at this stage. However several of the cast have suggested that fans should expect something different from previous Star Wars films.

In April, Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron, likened it to working on an independent film. “Rian is definitely going to places and investigating things that haven’t really been done in the Star Wars universe,” he told the LA Times. “For me, it’s so fun getting to explore different things that I wouldn’t have expected in this universe.”

Co-stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega have also spoken about the film’s darker tone. “It’s a different take–darker, bigger,” Boyega told Variety. “Someone will say: ‘How do you get bigger than Force Awakens?’ But it’s crazy.”

Star Wars Episode VIII arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017. It also stars Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Domhnall Gleeson, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis.

  • Latest Suicide Squad TV Spot Delivers Maximum Mayhem

Supervillains have always been an important part of comic book movies, and the upcoming Suicide Squad will be one of the first times that they have headed up their own film. The DC movie sees a gang of the most dangerous bad guys sent on a mission by the US government in return for reduced prison sentences. The latest TV spot has landed–check it out below:

Suicide Squad is directed by Fury‘s David Ayer, and stars Jared Leto as the Joker, alongside Will Smith as Deadshot, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ben Affleck will also make a cameo as Batman.

This week it was confirmed that the movie has received a PG-13 rating. Although the darker aspects of the comic books it is based on suggested that it might suit a stronger R rating, the lower PG-13 keeps it in line with the other films in the DC universe so far.

Last year, producer Charles Roven explained that it was important to maintain consistency, and this included ratings. “We really want to make these films tonally consistent, because this is a shared universe,” he told Collider. “We’re not dealing in absolutes, because while this is business, it’s also a creative endeavor. [But] our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13.”

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.

  • Vivendi to Buy Remaining Control of Gameloft as Guillemots Agree to Sell

Vivendi gained majority control of mobile publisher Gameloft last week, and now the Guillemot family has said it will sell its remaining control to the mass media company. Some analysts believe that the acquisition of Gameloft is part of a larger plan to buy Ubisoft, another Guillemot family-founded company.

In a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Guillemot family said that it “maintains that Vivendi’s hostile approach goes against the best interest of Gameloft, both for its activity and for its teams.” The Guillemots control amounts to 21.7 percent, which will go to Vivendi when the sell-off goes through.

Gameloft’s former CEO Michel Guillemot resigned last week, as he addressed the publisher’s future. He will remain in power until a shareholder meeting on June 29, at which point “a new management with a new strategy will have taken over.”

Michel also mentioned the changes that could come with Vivendi’s forthcoming takeover.

“There will be from June 29 onwards a new strategy with a possible integration of Gameloft’s existing activities into Vivendi’s,” he explained. “The information published so far by the new owners show that the changes may be profound, for the creators: “convergence between creative industries,” and for everyone else: “pooling of distribution networks.” It is not my role to say if these changes will be positive or negative for you as it will happen after my watch.”

Michel also sits on the board of Ubisoft, where his brother Yves is the CEO. Vivendi acquired a minority stake in the Assassin’s Creed publisher in October 2015 and has periodically increased its stake since. Yves has stated in the past that Ubisoft will “fight to preserve [its] independence” and said that Vivendi’s investment is unwanted.

“Our intention is and has always been to remain independent, a value which, for 30 years, has allowed us to innovate, take risks, create beloved franchises for players around the world, and which has helped the company grow into the leader it is today,” he said.

Ubisoft has prepared for a possible hostile takeover by Vivendi by meeting with “a dozen potential investors” in Canada as part of an effort to “build support for the company’s founders and current management.” Ubisoft is based in France, but it’s largest studio is in Montreal.

Vivendi used to own part of Activision Blizzard. The Call of Duty publisher completed its buyback in 2013, and Vivendi sold its remaining shares in the company this past January.

  • All of the PS4 Neo, New Xbox One, and Nintendo NX Rumors Heading Into E3 2016

With E3 less than a week away, there are plenty of rumors surrounding the console manufacturers–Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo–and their next pieces of hardware. We’ve collected our three articles that delve into what we’ve heard so far, and you can check them out below.

    Every PS4.5/Neo Rumor

“According to the initial details, the ‘PS4.5’ would come equipped with an upgraded GPU that would allow it to output a 4K video signal, and also enhance the graphics of PS VR games. This news seemed to strengthen rumors of a more powerful PS4 from October of last year, when Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Masayasu Ito said the company might consider offering a ‘high-power’ model of its console.”

Every New Xbox One Hardware Rumor

“According to reports from May, one of the consoles Microsoft may announce at E3 will be a version of the Xbox One that is 40 percent smaller than the current model. This system is said to include a 2 TB hard drive (existing models have 500 GB and 1 TB hard drives) and may go on sale this year. It could also have a slightly redesigned controller.

Looking further out, Microsoft is also rumored to be working on a more powerful version of the Xbox One to launch in 2017. This system is said to be four times as beefy as the existing model and might be VR-ready. If the leaked PlayStation 4 Neo specs prove to be accurate, the new Xbox One would be even more powerful than that console, too. Whether or not this system is announced at E3, however, remains to be seen.”

    Every Nintendo NX Rumor

“Before his passing, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata described the NX as a ‘brand new concept.’ His successor, Tatsumi Kimishima, added it was not the ‘next version of Wii or Wii U,’ but something ‘unique and different.’ Kimishima also acknowledged that Nintendo needed to ‘move away from [Wii and Wii U]’ to make something new.

Details of this new hardware platform remain a mystery, but plenty of rumours have circulated. Leading speculation is that Nintendo plans to unite its handheld and console efforts. Reports have suggested NX will include a traditional living room console and ‘at least one mobile unit.’ The two units will supposedly work in conjunction with each other, allowing players to take their living room gaming on the road. It has also been speculated the console could be used to boost the power of the handheld.”

  • Overwatch Badminton Looks Too Cool to Not Try

Overwatch has a lot of potential for crazy hijinks, as evidenced by the Overwatch myth videos, and now, players have found a way to play badminton on the game’s Volskaya Industries map.

YouTube user Artisan & Quix has posted a video that demonstrates the racquet sport, which is played with four Genjis, two Mercys, and one Junkrat. The four Genji players serve as the sport’s participants (two on each side), while Junkrat shoots a grenade that is then used as the shuttlecock. Genji’s Deflect is used to send the grenade flying to the other side, and the two Mercy players form the net by shooting a stream of health and attack boost at each other. You can see it for yourself in the video below.

If the grenade blows up on your side of the net, the opposing team gets a point. In the video, the Junkrat player keeps score, but he unfortunately has to be on one of the two teams. The reason this is disappointing is because if the grenade blows up near a player, it’ll only hurt them if they’re on Junkrat’s enemy team. Regardless, it’s an impressive setup, and it makes us want to try it out for ourselves.

For more hilarious Overwatch videos, you can check out the links below.

Overwatch has already reached 7 million players, while its beta had over 9.7 million. Developer Blizzard has been tough on cheaters, making it difficult for those banned to play, even when they’re on a new account with a new copy. Blizzard’s no-nonsense approach was seen in an email sent to a banned player.

“We don’t take this decision lightly,” the email reads. “Our team issued this closure after a careful review of relevant evidence. Our support staff will not overturn these closures and may not respond to appeals.”

  • DC's Justice League Dark to Become Animated Feature–Report

DC's Justice League Dark to Become Animated Feature–Report

With all the reshuffling that has taken place at Warner following the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the status of some of the projects that don’t slot into DC’s cinematic universe has become unclear. One such film is Justice League Dark, which looked to be moving ahead late last year. However, it now seems that it might be coming our way as an animated feature.

As reported by Comicbook.com, the British Board of Film Classification recently certified the contents of the upcoming home entertainment release for the animated Batman: The Killing Joke. One the bonus features is titled A Sneak Peak at Justice League Dark, strongly suggesting that an animated version of the property is in development.

Following the criticism that Dawn of Justice received for its dark tone, it would certainly seem logical that Warner would seek to adapt this supernatural spin on the superhero team into an animated feature instead of a live action movie. It was recently reported that the studio was very supportive of the decision to release The Killing Joke with an R certificate.

A movie version of Justice League Dark has been in development for some time. Last year both Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor were rumoured to be in consideration for the lead role of John Constantine. Guillermo del Toro was at one point in line to direct, and submitted a potential script to Warner in 2014.

All will be revealed when The Killing Joke arrives on August 2. The much-anticipated adaptation of the classic graphic novel stars Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill–check the trailer out here.

  • Rainbow Six Siege Is Banning Cheaters on Their First Offense

Rainbow Six Siege Is Banning Cheaters on Their First Offense

Ubisoft today announced that it’s taking serious measures against Rainbow Six Siege cheaters. As of today, June 7, Ubisoft will permanently ban people on their first offense for cheating or hacking.

“The presence of cheating in the game is something we take very seriously, and is a priority on the development team,” Ubisoft said on the Siege website. “This update is one step among many that we are working on to better engage with the community on this issue.”

The Siege code of conduct has been updated as well. Here is the pertinent section regarding cheating/modding/hacking:

“Player is running a modified or otherwise unauthorized version of the game client or a third-party software which provides any sort of unfair advantage (wallhacks, aimhacks…) or causing detriment to other players’ experience: Maximum penalty is permanent ban on first offense.”

You can check out this FAQ to learn more on the new permanent ban and Code of Conduct updates.

Ubisoft also shared new details on additional anti-cheat measures it’s taking. The developer is currently “accessing and testing” a number of client-side and anti-cheat options, in addition to implementing new measures for its FairFight efforts. More details on this front will be announced “as soon as we are ready,” Ubisoft said.

“We will be continuing to support the community on this issue, and we want to assure you that if a player is using cheating software, they are not welcome in Rainbow Six Siege.”

Siege isn’t the only gaming taking serious measures against cheaters. Blizzard’s Overwatch also permanently bans people for cheating.

  • This Overwatch Mythbusters Video Tests Potentially Devastating Strategies

The latest Overwatch Myths video from YouTube user DefendTheHouse is out now, and the series continues to shock and awe us with some of the things you can do in Blizzard’s first-person shooter. Check it out for yourself in the embed above.

Some of these myths give us new ideas to try out on our teammates and enemies. The video tests Tracer’s Recall ability to see if she can get rid of a pulse bomb, Reaper’s Death Blossom to see if it can be speed boosted by Lucio, and Junkrat’s Rip-Tire to see if it can be frozen by Mei.

Other myths that get confirmed or busted include whether Genji can deflect Soldier 76’s Biotic Field, if Reaper can prevent Mercy’s Resurrect by collecting souls, and if Mei can block victory poses with her Ice Wall. As always, the video’s results are pretty funny.

You can check out the first Overwatch Myth video here–it tests whether you can heal turrets with packs and the crushing ability of Mei’s Cryo-Freeze ability. The second video tests Bastion’s crushing ability in Tank form and whether Junkrat’s Steel Trap can stop a charging Reinhardt. You can watch that one here.

DefendTheHouse has produced these types of videos for other video games as well, including The Division and Halo 5: Guardians. You can check them out through the links below.
