  • Pokemon Go Finally Launches in Japan, PlayStation Exec Already Playing

Pokemon Go, the wildly popular mobile game where you catch creatures in the real world, has finally launched in Japan. It’s one of the last major markets where the game was not available.

It’s also particularly notable because Japan is The Pokemon Company’s home country. In a tweet announcing the release, developer Niantic Labs thanked fans for their patience.

Trainers in Japan, thank you for being patient. Pokémon GO is now available to download in Japan!

    — Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) July 22, 2016

According to a previous report, Niantic Labs was holding back Pokemon Go’s Japanese release until it was confident the servers would hold up.

Ahead of the game’s release, the Japanese government released a flier that outlined nine warnings and pieces of advice that players should be aware of. The government warmed people to be careful of heat stroke and advised against entering dangerous areas in search of Pokemon. The country also said people should not walk while using their phone, maybe to help prevent a situation like the one in California where two men walked off a cliff while playing the game.

Niantic Labs has partnered with fast food giant McDonald’s for Pokemon Go. As part of the partnership, reportedly more than 3,000 restaurants will become PokeStops and Gyms.

PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, who is based in Japan, downloaded Pokemon Go already and even located some PokeStops.

Poke stops look pretty different in Japan 😀 pic.twitter.com/KNejzRJrIy

In other news about Pokemon Go, the stars of this week’s Star Trek Beyond recently spoke out against the game, calling it “upsetting” and “bizarre.” Additionally, people in Bosnia and Herzegovina are walking way too close to minefields in search of Pokemon.

  • Marvel's Iron Fist Show Gets Moody First Teaser

While Netflix’s Marvel heroes Daredevil and Jessica Jones already have successful shows, with Luke Cage playing a major part in the latter, until now fellow Defender Iron Fist had yet to be seen on screen. Iron Fist is expected to hit the streaming service next year, and the first teaser was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con. Check it out below:

This is one of several promos for upcoming Marvel Netflix shows that premiered at SDCC. The full trailer for the upcoming Luke Cage was revealed, alongside a brief teaser for The Defenders, which will see all four heroes team up.

Iron Fist features Game of Thrones star Finn Jones as the highly-skilled Daniel Rand, a martial arts master with supernatural abilities. He first appeared in 1974 in Marvel Premiere #15, and is also known for being a member of the team Heroes for Hire alongside Luke Cage.

Although a premiere date for the show is yet to be announced, it will almost certainly debut in 2017. If it follows Netflix’s previous schedule for its Marvel shows, a spring release looks likely.

  • GTA Online Update Includes Biker DLC References

GTA Online Update Includes Biker DLC References

The Cunning Stunts update for Grand Theft Auto Online includes scripts for what looks to be biker DLC. As posted on GTA Forums, the scripts make references to biker “bad deal, initiation, joust, rescue contact, and export.”

As noted by TezFunz, who discovered the scripts, some of these start with the “gb” prefix, which has traditionally been used for CEO or VIP missions. These involve commanding other players and running jobs, so it may be that players get to put together their own gang and manage it.

    3098499-screen shot 2016-07-22 at 11.04.26.png

Another script called “personal mod garage,” has the “am_mp” prefix, and this is usually related to owning property. This suggests that players may get some bike customisation garage.

The Cunning Stunts update introduced a multiplayer mode that lets players jump in cars and race through loops and tubes, or zip off ramps with superspeed thanks to boosts. Players can also drive through massive rings of fire on the courses, which are set in the Los Santos skyline, high above the ground.

“The jumps, gaps, terrain, and obstacles in each Race are tailored to match the attributes of specific vehicle classes, including new Super cars, Sports cars and Motorbikes,” Rockstar explained.

“And of course, racing livery-clad vehicles deserve appropriately tatted and dressed drivers, sporting new motocross gear, racing suits, helmets and a host of other additions.”

Single-player DLC for GTA 5 is still under consideration, but the big numbers for GTA Online may explain why Rockstar appears to be prioritizing multiplayer content at this time.

  • More Tomb Raider Movie Details Emerge

More Tomb Raider Movie Details Emerge

Lara Croft movie actress Alicia Vikander has shared some new details on the upcoming Tomb Raider movie. She tells HitFix that, as suspected, the film is indeed based on Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 Tomb Raider reboot. Vikander hopes the film can touch on the “emotional aspect” of getting to know the Lara Croft character, starting at the beginning.

“They told me they were doing the film based on the reboot of the game from 2013,” the Oscar-winner said. “That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.”

    3097831-croft.jpg

In March this year, director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) lauded the 2013 game and said his movie will try to do something similar, presenting Croft as a “real human being.”

“I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well,” he said. “I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”

Vikander, who won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her part in The Danish Girl, also talked about playing the game in her youth. “I, with the rest of the world, was excited to see a female protagonist in a video game,” the 27-year-old said.

This isn’t the first time Vikander has talked about playing Tomb Raider. In June, she remarked that not many of her girlfriends shared her interesting in games.

“But I really loved it,” she explained at the time. “I did play Tomb Raider back then, even though my parents said I wasn’t allowed to.”

Specific story points for the new Tomb Raider are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know it’s being written by Evan Daugherty (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent). The project is a collaboration between four companies–GK Films, Warner Bros, MGM, and Square Enix.

The previous two Tomb Raider films–2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life–starred Angelina Jolie as the iconic British archaeologist.

Vikander also revealed in the HitFix interview that she turned down a role in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, due in part to scheduling concerns for her part in Jason Bourne.

The new Tomb Raider movie hits theaters on March 16, 2018. So far, no other casting announcements have been made.

In Tomb Raider gaming news, Square Enix this week announced Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration edition, which is coming to PlayStation 4 in October; most of its content will also be released for Xbox One and PC.

  • Huge Star Wars Battlefront Patch Adds New Offline Mode and All of These Changes

Huge Star Wars Battlefront Patch Adds New Offline Mode and All of These Changes

A new patch for Star Wars Battlefront arrived today, adding the offline Skirmish mode and making a number of changes to the shooter’s UI, maps, modes, weapons, heroes, and more.

As announced previously, Skirmish lets you play the Walker Assault or Fighter Squadron modes against bots by yourself or with a friend online. You can also play split-screen, but only on console. GameSpot tried Skirmish recently and you can see what we thought in the video above.

Today’s Battlefront patch also tweaks the partner system so that spawning checks happen at a one-second interval instead of two. “This should make it less likely that players will be able to partner spawn when being close to an enemy before a fire fight has started,” DICE said in the official patch notes.

Additionally, spawning on your partner is now disabled if an enemy is within 10 meters; previously this was 2 meters. In terms of scoring changes, no longer will it be possible to gain trait rank when earning a kill assist. Now, kill assists will only yield score.

    3097204-starwarsbattlefront_hutt_contracts.jpg

This update also fixes a problem where Rebel items could be used on the new Bespin maps even if players hadn’t purchased them.

Other notable changes include the time between rounds increased from 60 seconds to 90 seconds, while if you stay close to objectives your star cards will refresh faster.

The Battlefront update also makes a number of weapon balance changes, including DT-12 fire rate rising from 220 to 250, while the DLT-44’s fire rate is boosted from 180 to 210.

In terms of hero/villain changes, Vader can now deflect Han Solo’s Lucky Shot or Leia’s Trooper Bane, but he will become stunned for a period. Additionally, when using Luke or Vader, enemies will now always die from lightsaber attacks, even if they’re using the Bacta Bomb star card.

Also, Boba Fett has been changed so that his flamethrower ability can be canceled; you can do this by pressing the activation button again. What’s more, his flamethrower damage distance has been boosted from 3.5 meters to 4.75 meters.

The complete July 21 Battlefront patch notes are below. The download is 12 GB on Xbox One (which is twice the size of the complete No Man’s Sky game) and is likely similar in size on PlayStation 4 and PC.

New Star Wars Rogue One Character Revealed

Last week at Star Wars Celebration we learned more about Rogue One‘s new droid, K-2SO, and now Lucasfilm has revealed a brand-new character for the upcoming spinoff movie. Say hello to “Edrio Two Tubes.”

Lucasfilm announced the character in a Facebook post showing off a life-size statue of him that will be on display at San Diego Comic-Con this week. Two Tubes is a mercenary pilot who flies alongside his “eggmate,” Benthic.

“The two share the nickname derived from the breathing apparatus that allows their Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres,” Lucasfilm explained. “Edrio’s home world Yar Togna was conquered and occupied by the Empire, forcing him to flee as a refugee. Desiring to strike back at the Empire, Edrio and Benthic have allied with Saw Gerrera.”

Saw Gerrera, a character from the animated Clone Wars series, is played by Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in Rogue One. There is no word yet on who will play Two Tubes, or if he’s a computer-generated character like K-2SO.

Rogue One, the first-ever Star Wars spinoff movie, comes to theaters on December 16. New footage from the film was recently released, while Lucasfilm also showed off a new a poster.

In addition to Whitaker, Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, and Diego Luna, while James Earl Jones returns to voice Darth Vader. It was directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

  • Dino Game Ark's Free PS4 Version "On Hold," But Regular Game Coming Sooner

Dino Game Ark's Free PS4 Version "On Hold," But Regular Game Coming Sooner

Dinosaur game Ark: Survival Evolved‘s free version, Survival of the Fittest, has been put “on hold” indefinitely for PlayStation 4, developer Studio Wildcard has announced. Previously, the studio expected to launch the game on July 19, but now there is no release date at all.

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, senior gameplay/technical designer Kayd Hendricks said, “While this means Ark: Survival of the Fittest won’t be releasing on PS4 in July 2016, we’re working towards an earlier release of Ark: Survival Evolved.”

    3097812-ark.jpg

Hendricks did not provide any estimation for when Survival Evolved will launch on PS4. The game is already out on PC through Early Access and Xbox One via Game Preview.

Survival of the Fittest, the free version, remains exclusive to PC for now. In addition to PS4, the game will also be released on Xbox One.

Survival of the Fittest retains many of the same elements of Survival Evolved, such as crafting, building bases, and taming dinosaurs. But it differs in that it pits up to 72 players against each other in a battle that takes place within an always-shrinking circle referred to as the “ring of death.”

In addition to the main online mode, there’s also split-screen and LAN support, as well as an offline training mode which could eventually get AI-controlled bots to compete against.

Originally released in summer 2015, Survival Evolved has been a big hit, selling more than 5 million copies across PC and Xbox One. It’s been one of the most-played games on Steam for a long time now; as of today, July 21, it sits in the No. 8 position with a peak player figure of more than 42,000.

  • Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Gets Bad in Latest Suicide Squad Trailer

With Suicide Squad due in a couple of weeks, the latest batch of promo clips focus on the individual members of the movie’s cast. So far we’ve had Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Will Smith’s Deadshot, and now a look at Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. Check it out below:

Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer, who wrote the Oscar-winning Training Day and directed the likes of Fury and End of Watch. It also stars Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Jay Hernandez, and Ben Affleck will make a cameo appearance as Batman.

In a recent interview with Slashfilm, Ayer confirmed that Batman was always going to be in the movie, and how exciting it was to have Affleck on board. “If you are going to do a DC comic book movie, you want Batman, I’m a little bit of a fanboy,” he said. “It’s something important to me. I think it’s every filmmaker’s dream to be able to be given such an iconic asset like that and really see when the suit shows up on set–you have Ben in the suit–it’s really like, “F**k!” It’s really cool.”

According to a recent report, Suicide Squad–which arrives on August 5–could pull in as much as $140 in the US for its opening, which would set a new August record. It could also become the biggest opening for a Will Smith movie. His current best-performer is 2007’s I Am Legend, which made $77.2 million in the US for its debut weekend.

  • Rocket League Dev Can Activate PS4/Xbox One Cross-Play in "Few Hours," Is Waiting for Sony Approval

Psyonix has said the cross-network functionality that would allow Xbox One and PS4 owners to to play Rocket League together is complete and could be implemented in “a few hours” if Sony approved.

Speaking to IGN, studio vice president Jeremy Dunham said it is “at the point where all we need is the go-ahead on the Sony side.”

“We can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem,” he added. “It’d literally take a few hours to propagate throughout the whole world, so really we’re just waiting on the permission to do so.”

Although Microsoft has said it is ready to connect Xbox One and PS4 players, Dunham said he isn’t sure when Sony will agree. He noted that he is “confident” it will happen, however.

“It could be tomorrow, it could be longer than that. We just don’t know–we’re anxiously awaiting that, just like the rest of our fans,” he said.

“Sony’s such a big company that I’m sure it takes a while for them to figure out what it is that the roadblocks are, what sort of issues they might run into with other titles, any number of things that I can’t even begin to speculate on.”

He continued: “We definitely ask them for updates often, and we’re still very confident that they’re eventually going to open those doors and welcome us in, but we also are really understanding that it’s going to take a while especially given all the ramifications of everything. It was just as much of a surprise to them as I think the rest of the world when Microsoft said that they would do it.”

In March, Microsoft announced it would natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other “online multiplayer networks.” This effectively opened the Xbox Live platform to also accommodate players from Sony’s PlayStation Network.

Sony has not yet committed to opening up the PlayStation Network to Xbox players.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play,” Sony said when asked for a statement on cross-network support.

“PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy XI on PS2 and PC back in 2002.”

Square Enix has also released a new trailer for Final Fantasy 15 for a promotion called Carbuncle Surprise. Anyone who pre-orders any version of the game from the Square Enix online store can come back every Friday for a chance to receive a gift.

According to the trailer prizes include action figures, Final Fantasy accessories, wireless speakers, an Xbox One custom console, a home entertainment system, exclusive Cindymobile DLC, or even an actual car.

Those that don’t win these big prizes will still receive member points for the Square Enix online store. Watch the trailer below to see how it all works.

The Final Fantasy XV release date has been confirmed as September 30, 2016. It will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while Square Enix is “thinking about a PC version.” If the RPG does come to PC, fans should not expect this version to launch alongside the console editions in September, if it happens at all.
