Limbo, Inside Dev's CEO Leaves to "Seek New Challenges"

Dino Patti, the CEO of Limbo and Inside developer Playdead, has left the company. Writing on Twitter, Patti said he’s exiting the Danish studio to “seek new challenges.”

“Following almost 10 incredible years building Playdead from an idea to two dents in the games industry, I’m leaving to seek new challenges,” he wrote.

Patti founded Playdead in 2006 with Arnt Jensen. The studio has released two games over the years: Limbo (2010) and Inside (2016).

There is no word on who will take over for Patti as Playdead’s CEO. We attempted to contact Patti via his work email, but it is no longer operational.

GI.biz reports that Patti sold his Playdead shares to Jensen, though the volume and value of the transaction was not specified. We’ll update this post when more details become available regarding the management structure of Playdead.

Playdead’s two games have been highly regarded, as Limbo sits at a 90 on GameSpot sister site Metacritic, while the recently released Inside has a 92 rating. GameSpot’s reviews for the games scored them a 9 and 8 respectively.

The developer enjoyed critical success and did so with a relatively small team. Playdead’s headcount stands at around 25 people, according to GI.biz.

Playdead has not announced any new games.

Live Content for Summer Bonus Episode

    • New Escalation Contracts
    • Elusive Targets
    • New Featured Contracts (Contracts Mode)

After a maintenance period, all Hitman players will be prompted to download a game update on July 19th. We expect the update to be available to download between 11am and 1pm UTC for players on PS4 and Xbox One. For PC players, we expect the update to be available to download between 1pm and 3pm UTC. All players will receive the update with the following improvements and changes to the game.

    New Additions

    • Leaderboards now display the Contract completion time of all players, when viewing their detailed score.
    • Added a detailed pop-up of the required Target Kill/Objective conditions on the Briefing Page and Notebook.
    • Added a tile to the ‘Destination’ page that shows the next upcoming destination.
    • Added Tips and Hints to the Loading Screen.
    • Added a filter on the Challenges menu that allows you to toggle which challenges are displayed. There are three options: ‘Show all’, ‘Show achieved’ or ‘Show unachieved’.
    • Added an option under Options:Gameplay to toggle the Challenge Completion pop-up. This is shown in the top-right hand corner when you complete a challenge. There are two options: ‘Show Challenge notifications’ or ‘Hide Challenge notifications’.
    • Added an option under Options:Gameplay to toggle ‘Target Indicators’ on the Mini Map. There are two options: ‘On’ or ‘Off’.
    • Challenges for Elusive Targets have been moved to their own category, allowing players to have a better overview of the challenges that have been completed on each mission.

When selecting a contract in the Contracts menu, the location and mission name will be shown.

    • Example: Marrakesh / A Gilded Cage.
    • The Featured Hub will now display the newest episodic content.
    • In the case of a disconnection from the servers whilst browsing the game menu, a ‘Reconnect’ option has been added.
    • The mission briefing videos for the first three Sarajevo Six missions have been added to the briefing page for each respective mission. (PS4 only)

    Changes to Existing Features

    • Unconscious targets can now be dumped into body containers that allow the player to then kill them. For example, unconscious targets can now be dumped in the shredder and acid containers in the World of Tomorrow mission. Sorry, Silvio.
    • Adjusted the design of the surveillance system so that all cameras are linked on a “global” system within the mission. All cameras are now connected to all recorders in a mission and if a player disables one recorder, all cameras no longer record 47.
    • Changes to how the ICA Remote Audio Distraction item functions. This item now attracts the attention of other characters only if is remotely activated, as intended. Previously, it would attract attention as soon as it was equipped. NPCs become suspicious of the device if 47 is carrying it or they discover it.
    • Changes to how the Remote Breaching Charge item functions. This item now has a small, lethal explosive radius.
    • The ‘Featured Contracts’ order has been ‘reversed’, so that the newest Contracts are shown first when viewing the list.
    • Elusive Target status is now only shown on the Featured Hub for the duration of the contract. The game will no longer permanently remind you that you failed an Elusive Target.
    • Updated the Escalation Contract Briefing page to show the newest objective/complication first, on the left side. You no longer need to scroll to the right to see the newly added complication.
    • Updated some of the Challenge descriptions to reflect that you can still erase evidence after being recorded.

    Fixes for Existing Issues

    • General stability improvements across all platforms
    • Fixed a handful of issues that could lead to dips in performance in Marrakesh.
    • Fixed an issue that could result in 47 being spotted through the walls in a closed room in the markets during the A Gilded Cage mission.
    • Fixed an issue where guards in the ‘hunting’ state would know exactly where 47 was located after a crime had been reported to them by a civilian. Now, guards will investigate the area where the civilian witnessed the crime, and not where 47 is currently located.
    • Fixed an issue where using a syringe with the ‘Silent Attack’ prompt would result in other characters reacting to the action. This action is now silent, as intended.
    • Fixed an issue that could cause some decals to not appear in the Final Test mission
    • Fixed rare issues that could cause opportunities in Paris to not update.
    • Fixed an issue where dragging bodies could result in 47 hands shaking unnaturally.
    • Fixed an issue where the complication timer during Escalation Contracts could skip a second, i.e going from 17 seconds remaining to 15 seconds remaining.

The next Illusive Target for Hitman is Gary Busey. Yep. Read all about it here.

  • Overwatch PS4 Players Have Lost Levels and Skins Because of a Bug, They're Not Happy

PS4 Overwatch players that lost level progress, unlocked skins, and competitive ranks due to a bug are unhappy that developer Blizzard hasn’t addressed the issue.

As reported by Polygon, threads reporting the bug and its resulting issues appeared online on July 11. Players on the PlayStation 4 version of the team-based shooter stated they were losing levels, while some claimed their progress had been reset entirely.

Others, meanwhile, reported that skins that they unlocked from loot boxes–some of which were acquired using real money–had also vanished.

On July 11, Blizzard’s official Overwatch Twitter account provided an update on the issue.

“We’re currently looking into reports of lost progression on PlayStation 4,” it read. “Thank you for your patience! We’ll share updates as we know more.”

On July 12, a Blizzard representative said the “root cause for this was fixed, so it shouldn’t happen to anyone else,” but it was continuing its investigation into the progress was lost.

However, complaints have persisted on the Battle.net forums, with players asking for Blizzard to fix the problem, restore their lost items, or reimburse them for the in-game currency/real money spent on the game.

Overwatch’s first new character, Ana, was revealed on July 12. She is a support class that uses a sniper rifle. She also happens to be the mother of Pharah. She’s capable of healing and buffing teammates, as well as dealing damage and putting enemies to sleep.

Ana does not yet have a release date, but those on PC can try her now on Overwatch’s public test servers. You can read more about the big patch that adds her here and see all of her skins here.

  • Pokemon Go Takes Up Nearly Half of All Mobile Gaming Purchases in a Single Day

Pokemon Go Takes Up Nearly Half of All Mobile Gaming Purchases in a Single Day

It’s no secret that mobile game Pokemon Go has been vastly popular, but how does the money the game makes compare to other successful mobile apps? According to a report from research company Slice Intelligence, Pokemon Go’s in-game purchases made up 47 percent of total of the entire mobile gaming market in a single day, on July 10.

    Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3

In other words, Pokemon Go almost made more revenue in a single day than every other mobile app combined. In addition, the report suggests that the app may be bringing in first-time mobile gaming spenders. Less than 53 percent of users who spent money in Pokemon Go had made one or zero mobile game purchases in the last six months.

The report alleges that the most popular in-game purchase is the 100 Poke Coin bundle, making up approximately 37 percent of all purchases. However, the app has made the most money from the 1,200 Poke Coin bundles, which cost five dollars.

It’s been estimated that Pokemon Go has already made $14 million. The game was developed by Niantic, and has already outperformed the developer’s previous mobile game, Ingress.

Pokemon Go’s release has also made a big impact on Nintendo’s business outlook, with company shares rising a whopping 86 percent in Tokyo. This translates to a $17 billion increase worth of market capitalization.

  • WoW's Huge Pre-Expansion Update Coming Tuesday; Full Patch Notes Revealed

With its next expansion due out soon, World of Warcraft is set to receive a major update that introduces new mechanics and changes numerous areas of the MMO.

Legion’s pre-expansion update goes live tomorrow, July 19, and Blizzard has now fully detailed everything you can expect. The developer has released patch notes, various previews, and the overview video below, which does a good job of getting you up to speed with many of the biggest adjustments.

The patch adds a new transmogrification system that unlocks the look of an item account-wide once it’s bound to you. There are also a lot of class-specific changes, including adjustments to specializations. Blizzard is trying to make it easier to switch between specs; in addition to making the change itself easier, you’ll also need to worry about swapping gear less. That’s because it’s changing certain item types so that their stats aren’t tied to a particular spec.

WoW’s graphics get some improvements, too. The maximum draw distance has been “extended greatly for all world content,” and you’ll find three higher settings beyond what used to be the Ultra preset. Fog should also look better, and Blizzard says it has incorporated “modern techniques for rendering colors and other post-effects.”

One important thing to be aware of is that, after this update, you can no longer begin the quest for the Legendary Ring. If you’ve already started it, you can still complete it, but you’ll need to do so before Legion launches.

The full changes are too numerous to list here; you can explore everything through Blizzard’s patch notes and check out its many preview pieces here.

Legion, the sixth expansion pack for WoW, releases on August 30. It increases the level cap to 110, sees the return of Illidan, and adds a new area, hero, raids, and more.

  • Xbox One Getting Background Music Soon, But Not From Spotify

Xbox One Getting Background Music Soon, But Not From Spotify

The Xbox One’s major summer update will introduce, among other things, support for background music. This feature has been available on PlayStation 4 for more than a year now through a partnership with music-streaming giant Spotify. While it remains to be seen how background music will work on Xbox One, it looks like it won’t be via Spotify.

Someone on Twitter recently asked the Spotify customer support channel if the service might come to Xbox One. The channel replied (via VideoGamer), “Right now we’re focused on our exclusive partnership with PlayStation; we don’t have any info regarding other consoles.”

    3096213-groove.jpg

Sony partnered with Spotify in a big way, as the service officially replaced Music Unlimited when it launched for PS4 and PlayStation 3 in March 2015. Asked how long the PlayStation-Spotify exclusivity period might last, and if the service could come to other consoles, a Sony marketing director said in 2015, “That’s to be decided exactly.”

The app is having a lot of success, it seems. “Thanks to you, Spotify has become one of the most downloaded apps in PlayStation history,” Sony said earlier this year. People have already streamed more than 5 billion tracks, and PlayStation users really like Drake.

Background music support comes to Xbox One on August 2. Microsoft has not yet detailed how it will work, though one possibility is it will support the company’s Groove Music service. Micosoft’s music service used to be called Xbox Music, but changed to Groove Music last summer.

Also coming to Xbox One through the summer update is the Siri-like Cortana digital assistant, as well as changes to the Game Collection interface to make it “faster and easier.” The update will also add a Facebook friend finder tool, while sharing screenshots and gameplay clips will soon be doable in fewer steps than before. Check out this post for a full rundown of what to expect.

  • Windows 10 Won't Reach 1 Billion Downloads as Fast as Expected, Microsoft Admits

Windows 10 Won't Reach 1 Billion Downloads as Fast as Expected, Microsoft Admits

In Apil 2015, Microsoft said it was aiming to have 1 billion devices running Windows 10 by 2018. Now, the company is walking back that projection, saying that it needs more time to reach that major milestone.

In a statement to GameSpot sister site ZDNet, Microsoft reiterated that Windows 10 is “off to the hottest start in history,” but 1 billion devices by mid-2018 is no longer a realistic target.

“We’re pleased with our progress to date, but due to the focusing of our phone hardware business, it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of 1 billion monthly active devices,” Microsoft said. “In the year ahead, we are excited about usage growth coming from commercial deployments and new devices–and increasing customer delight with Windows.”

By Microsoft’s latest count, which came at the end of June 2016, Windows 10 had been installed on 350 million devices.

    3096207-win10.jpg

Microsoft Windows and Devices executive Terry Myerson offered up the 1 billion claim at the company’s Build conference in 2015. The figure encompasses downloads across PC, tablets, Xbox One, HoloLens, and more. Though the majority of downloads were expected across PC and tablets, Windows Phones were also expected to contribute to the 1 billion goal.

    However…

“Since April 2015, the bottom has fallen out of the Windows Phone market, with Microsoft officials conceding that Windows Phone isn’t much of a focus for Microsoft in calendar 2016,” ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley wrote.

The Xbox One is considered a Windows 10 device as of November 2015, as that’s when the New Xbox One Experience update introduced it as the console’s underlying OS

Go to ZDNet to get the full story and all the context.

In other news about Windows 10, you have until July 29 to take advantage of Microsoft’s free upgrade offer

  • Star Wars MMO's Next Expansion Coming This Fall

The next expansion for BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO has been announced.

Due out this fall is Knights of the Eternal Throne. Players can expect “more of BioWare’s cinematic storytelling,” as well as some “exciting new game features,” according to Eurogamer.

The Old Republic launched in December 2011, meaning it’s approaching its five-year anniversary. BioWare put out a video to celebrate the milestone, and in it, BioWare reveals players have created 87 million characters.

Fifty-three percent play on the Light side, while 47 percent have aligned with the Dark side, according to BioWare. Together, players have spent 1.5 billion hours in the game.

Previous expansions for The Old Republic included Rise of the Hutt Cartel, Galactic Starfighter, Galactic Strongholds, Shadow of Revan, and the multi-part Knights of the Fallen Empire.

To celebrate the forthcoming release of Knights of the Eternal Throne, BioWare made Knights of the Fallen Empire’s first chapter free.

The Old Republic debuted as a subscription-based MMO, but switched to a free-to-play model in November 2012, less than a year after launch.
