  • Newegg Expands to Ebay Australia

    Newegg Expands to Ebay Australia

Technology-focused retailer Newegg has announced its expansion with a store opening on Ebay Australia. The launch comes as part of the retailer’s celebrations commemorating its second anniversary of serving Australian customers.

    3102866-newegglogo.jpg

All products on Newegg’s Ebay Australia store will ship from within the country. In addition, the Newegg Premier service has been discounted for Australian customers to A$59 (usually A$79). The service offers free domestic shipping within Australia (excluding cross-border deliveries), no re-stocking fees, and 20 percent off select items.

Newegg first launched local order fulfilment in Australia in November 2015. The company is based in North America, and while Aussies have been able to purchase from the North American store, the shipping rates to Australia have meant that most hardware purchases become more expensive than purchasing locally. Australian users now have access to localised customer support, returns, product compatibility, and parts that align with country-specific regulations.

  • Pokemon Go Dev Responds to Update Criticisms

Pokemon Go developer Niantic Labs has responded to criticism of an update for the game that removed the 3-Step tracking feature and support for third-party Pokemon locating services.

In a post on the official Pokemon Go Facebook page, Niantic said the 3-Step display, which was designed to give players a vague indication of how close a specific Pokemon was, had to be removed “in order to improve the underlying design.”

“The original feature, although enjoyed by many, was also confusing and did not meet our underlying product goals,” it continued. “We will keep you posted as we strive to improve this feature.”

The update also restricted access to the Pokemon Go API, which in turn meant third-party services such as PokeVision ceased to function. This proved to be incredibly controversial as they offered an easy way to track Pokemon in real-time.

“We have limited access by third-party services which were interfering with our ability to maintain quality of service for our users and to bring Pokémon Go to users around the world,” Niantic said.

Discussing its ongoing effort to launch the game in more territories, Niantic said it is “working crazy hours to keep the game running as we continue to launch globally.”

“The large number of users has made the roll-out of Pokémon Go around the world an… interesting… challenge. And we aren’t done yet! Yes, Brazil, we want to bring the game to you (and many other countries where it is not yet available).”

It added: “If you haven’t heard us Tweeting much it’s because we’ve been heads down working on the game. But we’ll do our best going forward to keep you posted on what’s going on.”

Despite Niantic’s efforts to crackdown on third-party Pokemon tracking services, a new one has already been released. SmartPoke 2 shows Pokemon overlaid on a map, how far away they are from you, and how long they’ll be in that location. You can download it for Android phones and Android Wear watches here.

  • Harry Potter Author JK Rowling Discusses Ending The Story

Harry Potter Author JK Rowling Discusses Ending The Story

Harry Potter made his final movie appearance in 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Part 2, but has returned as an adult in the two-part play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The production opened last weekend in London, with the scripts also available as a book. But now author JK Rowling has confirmed that this is truly the end of Potter’s story.

    3103385-so-just-how-much-did-daniel-radcliffe-make-from-harry-potter-daniel-radcliffe-in-harry-1049571.jpg

Speaking to Reuters, Rowling was asked if Cursed Child would mark the beginning of a new series of adventures for the more mature Harry. “He goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we’re done” she said. “This is the next generation, you know. So, I’m thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after Deathly Hallows. Harry is now 37, with three children, and working in the Ministry of Magic.

But although this might be the end of the line for Harry, Rowling’s wider magical universe is to continue. The prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters in November, directed by David Yates, who made the last four Potter movies.

Fantastic Beasts stars Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a “magizoologist” that embarks upon an adventure to find and document magical creatures in 1920s New York. Check out the latest trailer here.

  • Suicide Squad Set for Massive Opening Weekend at Box Office

Suicide Squad Set for Massive Opening Weekend at Box Office

Suicide Squad finally hits theaters this weekend, and it is on course to break box office records. The latest film in DC’s cinematic superhero universe was already predicted to be the highest grossing film ever released in August, but new estimates suggest it could become one of the biggest films of the entire summer.

    3103368-will.jpg

As The Wrap reports, tracking figures estimate that the movie could make between $130 million and $140 million in its first three days. While Warner’s own predictions put it at a slightly more conservative $125 million, all figures are way ahead of the current record holder for an August release. In 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy made $94.3 million in its opening weekend.

If Suicide Squad achieves the upper reach of its current estimate, it will emerge as the third biggest opener of the year, beating Finding Dory‘s $135 million. Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War had the most successful opening weekend, with a $180 million debut, followed by DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The movie is directed by David Ayer, and tells the story of a group of death row supervillains who are employed covertly by the US government to perform dangerous missions, in return for reduced prison sentences.

It stars Jared Leto as Joker, alongside Will Smith as Deadshot, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Jay Hernandez co-star, with Ben Affleck making a cameo appearance as Batman.

    Sega's Sales Show Improvement

Sega has reported its sales for the three month period spanning April 1 to June 30, showing improvements in both sales and profit over the same period in 2015.

In its accompanying statement, Sega highlighted Phantasy Star Online 2‘s launch on PS4 as a particular highlight. Player numbers for the game reached 130,000, which it says is breaking the record for the game.

Sales for major mobile titles such as Chain Chronicle – Kizuna no Shintairiku, Puyopuyo!! Quest, and Hortensia Saga were described as “robust.”

For disc-based video games, Total War: Warhammer was noted as “highly popular, mainly in Europe.” Although sales figures for the game were not provided, the series overall has reached 20 million copies over 17 years.

Looking ahead, Sega plans to host regular in-game events for its mobile titles, and in console games, Atlus’ Persona 5 will be a key release. Sega added that it “plans to launch titles focusing on mainstay IP titles,” but didn’t provide any specifics.

Outside its home country of Japan, Sega expects growth mainly in Asia, “due to the penetration of next generation hardware of home video game console.” In Europe, the US, and Asia, it will leverage the “large markets” that have been developed for PC games.

  • HTC Vive Price Rises to Over £800 in UK Following Brexit

In the UK, the price of the HTC Vive virtual reality headset is increasing from £689 to £759. As of August 1, it will cost around £820, with postage and packaging factored in.

“HTC continuously monitors and adjusts pricing to ensure we are providing our customers with the best value possible,” the company said on its blog.

“Due to recent currency valuation changes and the current value of the GBP we are adjusting the price of the HTC Vive in the UK.”

Although HTC doesn’t outright cite Brexit as the cause of the change, the value of the pound immediately decreased following the announcement that Britain has voted to leave the European Union.

The headset launched in April and, in GameSpot’s HTC Vive review, Peter Brown described it as “the only way to experience today’s most advanced VR technology from the comfort of home.”

“Before you take the plunge with Vive, you have to prepare yourself accordingly. Unlike Rift, Vive comes with strict spatial requirements if you plan to utilize its hardware’s full potential. It’s not the easiest suite of hardware to set up, nor is it as refined as Rift, but Vive delivers the most advanced VR experience to date, a luxury that comes at a cost and with compromises.”

  • Inside Releases on PS4 at "End of August" – Report

Inside Releases on PS4 at "End of August" – Report

Inside, the atmospheric puzzle platformer from Limbo developer Playdead, will be available on PlayStation 4 “at the end of August,” according to VG247, which cites a “trusted source.”

The game was released on Xbox One and PC in late June and received critical acclaim. A PS4 version hasn’t officially been announced by Playdead, but Trophies for the game have also appeared on Exophase.

On July 5 , Playdead suggested that the game would be available on more platforms at some point.

“Our goal is of course to get Inside into the hands of as many gamers as possible,” it told Push Square. “But we can’t say anything about other potential platforms at this point.”

Limbo, the studio’s last game, launched initially as an Xbox 360 exclusive for Xbox Live Arcade. However, it was later released for PC and PS3, and has since become available for PS4, Xbox One, and PlayStation Vita.

In GameSpot’s Inside review, Alex Newhouse awarded it an 8/10.

“This is a beautiful, haunting, and memorable game, a worthy follow-up to Limbo,” he said.

“The real achievement of this game is the way that it crafts its narrative: detailed environments convey the bizarre world that you travel through; introspective moments are filled with minimalist sound design and just the barest touches of music; and the things you must do to complete your journey force you to confront the realities of humanity, freedom, and existence.”

Following the launch of Inside, Playdead’s chief executive, Dino Patti, left the company to “seek new challenges.”

“Following almost 10 incredible years building Playdead from an idea to two dents in the games industry, I’m leaving to seek new challenges,” he said.
