Dark Souls 3 Enjoys "Favorable Sales," Helps Bandai Namco Post Profit

A specific sales figure was not disclosed, but in an earnings report this week, Bandai Namco said Dark Souls III enjoyed “favorable” sales, leading the company to boost its earnings projections.

“For home video game software in the Network Entertainment Business, in North America and Europe, sales were favorable for the new title Dark Souls III, repeat titles, and titles owned by other companies sold utilizing the Company’s sales network,” Bandai Namco said in a news release [PDF].

In May, Bandai Namco announced that Dark Souls III had shipped 3 million copies, though it is not clear where that figure stands today.

As a result of dark Souls III’s performance, among other things, Bandai Namco is increasing its earnings guidance, as outlined in the table posted below.

  • Xbox Boss Reveals Next Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Game in Funny Fashion

2006’s Xbox 360 role-playing game Blue Dragon is coming to Xbox One by way of backwards compatibility, Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has revealed in a funny way.

Asked straight up if the game was coming to Xbox One, Spencer said, “I’m not allowed to say but yes.”

@Jfranklin4160 I’m not allowed to say but yes.

    — Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) August 4, 2016

Spencer didn’t say when Blue Dragon will land on Xbox One, however.

Blue Dragon, which was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker (read our review here), shipped on Xbox 360 across three discs. In May, Microsoft introduced support for multi-disc backwards compatibility titles, beginning with Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut.

There are now more than 200 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. You can see a list of all of them right here.

  • Steven Spielberg's Halo TV Show Is Still Alive

Microsoft has not talked about it in a very long time, but Steven Spielberg’s Halo TV show for Showtime is still on the way, it seems. Asked on Twitter what was up with the project or if it was dead, Spencer stated, “Alive.”

That’s not much, but confirmation that it’s not cancelled is something. This follows news from August 2015, when Showtime boss David Nevins confirmed the TV show was in “very active development.”

The Halo TV show was at one time expected to debut in fall 2015 alongside Halo 5: Guardians, but of course that didn’t happen. It’s unclear exactly what’s holding the project up, but it’s not uncommon for Hollywood productions to take a long time to come to fruition.

The Halo show was announced in May 2013 as part of the Xbox One reveal event. We still don’t know much about it, but Spencer has said before that the show won’t just be “filler.”

After production house Xbox Entertainment Studios shut down in 2014, the fate of the project was called into question. But Microsoft quickly stepped in to say the show would not be affected.

Before that, reports suggested that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp may direct the pilot.

One of Spielberg’s next projects is 2018’s gamer movie Ready Player One, which he’s directing. He’s also going to be behind the camera for 2019’s Indiana Jones 5.

Disclosure: GameSpot and Showtime are both owned by CBS.

  • Alien: Covenant is Now One Year Away, New Video Released to Celebrate

The upcoming sci-fi sequel Alien: Covenant is now one year from release, and a new video has been released from the production to celebrate. It shows star Katherine Waterston in hypersleep, and was posted on the Alien franchise’s official Facebook page. Check it out below:

Alien: Covenant is directed by Ridley Scott, who helmed the original Alien, plus 2012’s sort-of prequel Prometheus. It was originally announced as a direct sequel to Prometheus, but has subsequently gone through a couple of name changes to align it closer to the Alien series. The cast also includes Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, and Demian Bichir.

In a recent interview with Collider, Fassbender was asked how Covenant would compare Prometheus, in which he also starred. “It’s much scarier than Prometheus,” he said. “It’s kind of got more of the sort of thriller, imminent disaster feel that Alien had, so it’s kind of a beautiful meeting of both of those films. I’m really excited to see it, I think it’s gonna be super scary number one, [but] with the massive scope of Prometheus.

“Once it starts and the ball starts rolling, it doesn’t let up. It’s really gonna bring chills to the cinema.”

A number of images and videos have been released from the production over the past few months. Last week, McBride revealed the interior of a spaceship cockpit, while another pictured Waterston on-set, alongside Scott. An earlier clip showed prosthetic work on a familiar appendage, and previous images have included Waterston in character and the insignia for the ship referenced in the title.

Alien: Covenant hits theaters on August 4, 2017.

  • Divergent Star Doesn't Know if He'll Be Back After Next Film Heads to TV

Divergent Star Doesn't Know if He'll Be Back After Next Film Heads to TV

Last month it was reported that the next film in the Divergent film series would be heading to TV, following the disappointing box office take for this year’s Allegiant. Actor Miles Teller, who has appeared in all the movies so far, has now revealed that he doesn’t know if he’ll be returning for the next one.

    3105075-teller.jpg

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Teller admitted he had no idea if the future plans for the series of Young Adult adaptations included him. “We’ll see. I honestly haven’t talked to anybody,” he said. “It caught us all by surprise.”

“Things do change anytime they’re messing with something that was not the original intention. We all signed on for it in hopes that it’d be released in theaters, and we all had every intention of finishing [the franchise].”

Teller isn’t the only cast member who was not told in advance about the decision to switch the franchise to TV. Lead actress Shailene Woodley also expressed surprise when the news was first announced. “Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened and I landed, and I’m like ‘Whoa, what’s going on?!’ I need to talk and find out what the details are,” she said, via Screenrant.

Allegiant’s box office debut brought in $29.1 million, which was a more than 40 percent drop from both Divergent and first sequel Insurgent’s opening weekend earnings. Allegiant went on to make $179.2 million with a budget of $110 million, not including marketing.

The series also stars Theo James (Underworld: Awakening), Ansel Elgort (Carrie), and Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road), and is is based on a post-apocalyptic book series by author Veronica Roth.

  • Here's Why Pokemon Go Developer Shut Down PokeVision and Other Tracking Sites

Here's Why Pokemon Go Developer Shut Down PokeVision and Other Tracking Sites

Developer Niantic Labs has published a blog post explaining why it shut down various Pokemon Go tracking sites. The post comes less than week after third-party tracking apps including the popular PokeVision were shut down. As detailed on Niantic’s official Pokemon Go website, blocking the third parties who were accessing Niantic’s servers freed up a significant amount of resources, some of which helped the developer to proceed with its recent launch of the game in Latin America.

    Credit: Niantic Labs.

The post read, “We wanted to shed some more light on why we did this and why these seemingly innocuous sites and apps actually hurt our ability to deliver the game to new and existing players.” In addition, the developer shared a chart (shown above) which displayed the drop in server resources consumed after the third-party “scrapers” were blocked.

Niantic also explained that developers who spend time dealing with issue have their time taken away from building new features for the game. The post acknowledges other issues, including users cheating and attempts to break into the system, but states that the developer “will continue to take steps to maintain the stability and integrity of the game… We look forward to getting the game on stable footing so we can begin to work on new features.”

In recent related Pokemon Go news, Niantic removed a few players’ legendary Pokemon after they had mistakenly found their way into the game. The latest game update removed a broken tracking feature, instead of fixing it. This caused an outrage in the community, to which Niantic responded and said it was taken out “in order to improve the underlying design.”

The removal of the tracking feature has angered several Pokemon Go players–GameSpot editor Alexa Ray Corriera explains why in this write-up.

  • Brand-New Final Fantasy Game Out Now for Free on Mobile

Mobius Final Fantasy is out now on iOS and Android devices. Mobius isn’t like other mobile Final Fantasy games, in that it features a brand new story penned by Kazushige Nojima, the writer behind Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X.

Mobius Final Fantasy’s story synopsis makes it sound like a pretty standard JRPG adventure full of prophecies and chosen ones. I’m guessing you’ll end up saving the world at some point.

“Despair has cast a long, dark shadow across this land,” the synopsis reads. “The winds have stopped, the seas churn, and the earth rots. The people await for a hero to appear–the hero foretold in an ancient prophecy: ‘When darkness shrouds the land, the Warrior of Light will come. Hope rides in his wake.’ After a long journey across the Ether, castaways without pasts appear on the shores of Palamecia. One of them is destined to become the warrior of legend. You stand among them. Are you the hero whom the prophecy foretells?”

GameSpot’s Alexa Ray Corriea took a look at Mobius Final Fantasy and found that even though the graphics were impressive, the rest of the game was “lacking.”

“After spending several hours with Mobius Final Fantasy, the incentive to return to its world is moderately low,” she said. You can read her full preview here.

Brave Exvius is another mobile Final Fantasy game that released recently. It features dungeon crawling, teaming up with Final Fantasy heroes, and tap-based combat.

  • Listen to No Man's Sky Atmospheric Soundtrack Here

Hello Games’ No Man Sky is just a few days away from release, but if the wait is proving difficult you may be interested in listening to the soundtrack, which has been made available in its entirety online.

The game’s soundtrack was created by experimental rock band 65daysofstatic which signed on to make the music after they were approached to license one of their tracks for a trailer.

“Way back in 2013 we received a request to license the track ‘Debutante’ from our album We Were Exploding Anyway for a promotional trailer for No Man’s Sky,” explained band member Joe Shrewsbury, in an interview with The Independent. “We were intrigued by the game, and asked to learn more, and the more we learnt the more we wanted to be involved.

“We made it abundantly clear that if they didn’t have someone lined up to do the soundtrack, we’d be interested. Fortunately for us, they were fans of our music already, and we met up with Sean not long after that, and were subsequently offered the project.”

The soundtrack features 10 songs, each titled with an appropriately sci-fi bent, such as Asimov, Heliosphere, Hypersleep, and of course, End of the World Sun. You can listen to it in full through the video above. The soundtrack will be available to purchase from August 5.

No Man’s Sky launches on August 9 for PS4 and PC, but someone managed to get a leaked copy of it and claims to have “beaten” the game in about 35 hours. Developer Hello Games has confirmed it is already working on a rather large update.

“5am at Hello Games. Wrapping up a month of work on our first update,” said Sean Murray on Twitter. “Lots of new features, balancing and content.”
