  • FIFA 17 Out Now on EA/Origin Access, Four Days Before Launch

FIFA 17 Out Now on EA/Origin Access, Four Days Before Launch

EA’s FIFA 17 doesn’t officially come out until Tuesday, September 27, but some Xbox One and PC owners can play it right now. The professional soccer game was added to EA/Origin Access today.

Everyone with a subscription ($5/month or $30/year) can now play the full game, though only for 10 hours. The clock runs while the game is open, so be sure to close it when you’re not playing. Additionally, all progress from the EA/Origin Access version carries forward to the full game when it comes out. On top of that, EA/Origin Access members save 10 percent, so they can get the game for $54 instead of $60.

You don’t need an EA Access membership to play FIFA 17 right now, however, as a demo for the game is available too across all platforms.

Check back soon for GameSpot’s FIFA 17 review.

In other news about the game, Iceland’s men’s national team won’t be in the game in the wake of a reported pay dispute with EA Sports. You may recall that Iceland had an incredible run at the Euro 2016 event, making it all the way to the quarterfinals.

  • Star Wars Rogue One Won't Be As Successful As Force Awakens, Disney Boss Says

Star Wars Rogue One Won't Be As Successful As Force Awakens, Disney Boss Says

Star Wars: The Force Awakens stands as the third biggest movie of all time, with a total worldwide gross of nearly $2.1 billion. With the next movie in the blockbuster franchise, Rogue One, set to be released in December, the head of Disney has now revealed that he doesn’t expect it to do as well.

    3133235-rogueone.jpg

As reported by Variety, Disney CEO Bob Iger attempted to lower expectations for the upcoming spinoff. “We never felt it would do the level that Force Awakens did,” Iger said during an investor conference.

Nevertheless, he did stress that audience anticipation for the movie was just as strong. “The level of interest [in Rogue One] is as high as it was for Force Awakens,” he said.

Iger went on to state that he was very happy with what he had seen of Rogue One so far. “It’s really interesting in terms of Star Wars storytelling,” he said. “Star Wars has only been told as a saga, and this is a moment in time… we love what we’ve seen.”

The Disney boss added that he and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy had mapped out the plans for the franchise until 2020. This includes Episode VIII and IX, a Han Solo spinoff film, and a third spinoff for which a writer has been hired.

“We have movies in development for Star Wars ’til then, and we started talking about what we’re going to do in 2021 and beyond,” he said. “So, she’s not just making a Star Wars movie, she’s making a Star Wars universe.”

Two new trailers for Rogue One have appeared in the past couple of months. The first debuted during the Rio Olympics, while the second was an international teaser that contained footage not seen in the earlier trailer.

Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Mads Mikkelsen. It hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

  • Iceland Isn't in FIFA 17 Despite Incredible Euro 2016 Run and Here's Why

Iceland had an incredible run at this summer’s Euro tournament. The tiny nation made it all the way to the quaterfinals, knocking out England on its way, before eventually losing to France.

In the wake of the increased interest in the country’s soccer team, EA offered Iceland’s soccer association, KSI, $15,000 for the rights to their side for FIFA 17, according to a report from the BBC (via Kotaku). Iceland thought this figure was too low and made a counter offer. EA did not accept the unspecified figure and now KSI president Geir Thorsteinsson is speaking out about it.

“They are the ones buying these rights and they almost want it for free,” Thorsteinsson said about EA’s offer. “The performance at the Euros show that we are quite a good team and many would like to play with our team. It’s sad for the players–but the criticism should be towards EA Sports.”

Thorsteinsson added: “I really feel if we are giving away rights, or offering rights, it has to be proper negotiations and fair fees.”

Iceland’s men’s national team has never been in a FIFA game before.

EA has not commented on the matter. We’ve reached out to the company and will update this story with anything we hear back.

Curiously, EA said in a tweet earlier this month that Iceland’s “Viking Clap” victory chant would be featured in the game, according the Iceland Monitor. However, the tweet has now been deleted.

FIFA 17 comes out on September 27 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Xbox One owners with an EA Access membership can start playing the full game right now.

  • The Dark Tower Also Getting TV Show, Alongside Movie

The Dark Tower Also Getting TV Show, Alongside Movie

Stephen King’s classic fantasy epic The Dark Tower isn’t just heading to the big screen, it is also to become a TV show. The movie is due out next year, and it has now been announced that a Dark Tower series is on the way too.

    3133220-tdt.jpg

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, producers Sony have committed to a full 10-13 episode run of a Dark Tower show. It will be an adaptation of 1997’s Wizard and Glass, the fourth book in King’s epic series.

Idris Elba, who is starring in the movie, has signed on to the show, alongside his 15-year-old co-star Tom Taylor. The pair will form part of a framing device for the central story, which is set many years before the events of the film. It is set to start shooting in 2017 for an intended 2018 broadcast, although EW states that a distributor is yet to be found.

The film is set for release on February 23, 2017. Elba stars as gunslinger Roland Deschain, while Matthew McConaughey is playing demonic sorcerer Walter Padick, aka The Man in Black. The movie is directed by Nikolaj Arcel, who previously helmed the Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair. The first official images were release in July, and a trailer is expected soon.

The Dark Tower encompasses eight novels, which King published between 1982 and 2012. The books blend classic western themes with horror, sci-fi, and fantasy.

  • Rez Infinite Will Support 4K on PS4 Pro

Rez Infinite, the upcoming remake of Dreamcast classic Rez, will be playable in 4K resolution and run at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 4 Pro, developer Enhance Games has revealed. As reported by Polygon, this functionality will be for the areas included in the original version of the game, but not the new content being added to the title.

Enhance Games has stated there will be other benefits to playing Rez Infinite’s new Area X level–both in the normal mode and with PlayStation VR–on the PlayStation 4 Pro, but didn’t specify what these would be.

During Tokyo Game Show, GameSpot’s Alexa Ray Corriea played the new Area X level and described it as a “spiritual experience.”

“It’s easy to describe what Area X is, but it’s difficult to explain what it does to you … In Area X, Rez removes the rails that confine your flying character to one area ahead of you. By moving your head and looking in the direction you want to go, Area X lets you free fly anywhere you want in any part of a level,” she said.

“You can swim through the air like a shimmering cyberspace fish, weaving in and out of enemies and using the controller to shoot them out of the sky. Or you can ignore them for a while and fly off into the stars, leaving the rhythm of battle behind you.

She added: “Area X feels both familiar and alien, a comforting dip back into Rez and an exhilarating thrill ride into a world you’ve never known before.”

You can read the full Rez Infinite Area X preview for more of her impressions.

Rez Infinite’s release date has been confirmed as October 13, the same day that PS VR arrives in stores for $400. Sony’s VR headset isn’t required to play the game, as a standard, 2D version will still be available for those who wish to play it that way.

  • Marvel's Jessica Jones Will Still Be "Messed Up" in Season 2

Marvel's Jessica Jones Will Still Be "Messed Up" in Season 2

Marvel’s Netflix shows are easily the darkest in the studio’s cinematic and TV universe, and Jessica Jones was as much a disturbing psychological drama as it was a superhero adventure. With Season 2 due in 2018, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has been speaking about what fans can expect from Jessica’s second outing.

    3132689-lead_960.jpg

In a new interview with Esquire, Rosenberg explained that her time on the acclaimed serial killer drama Dexter will influence her approach to Jessica Jones‘ second season. “I learned from working on Dexter that you can advance the character, but you never want to cure the character,” she said. “With Dexter, the moment he felt guilt or accepted that he was ‘bad,’ the show’s over. He’s no longer a sociopath.

“The equivalent for us would be if Jessica somehow recovered from the damage that had been done to her. People don’t just heal, you don’t go through that just to say, ‘Oh, he got arrested, he’s in jail, I’m OK now. That trauma is a huge part of who she is now.”

“She was kind of messed up even before [season one villain] Kilgrave came along, and so in Season 2 we can explore what’s possible for her moving forward.”

The character, played by Krysten Ritter, is also set to appear in Netflix’s The Defenders, which will team her up with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Rosenberg revealed that although she is not directly involved with The Defenders, the fact that it will be screened before Jessica Jones Season 2 was influencing what she writes for her show.

“I need to know what they’re doing in order to plan for Season 2 of Jessica, and they need to know what we’re planning on in turn,” she said. “Marvel is very smart and they enjoy collaboration, so there’s never one maniac trying to take ownership.”

The Defenders is set to hit the streaming service in 2017, with Jessica Jones season 2 due in 2018.

  • Gears of War 4 Dev Talks Pre-Loading, File Size

Gears of War 4 Dev Talks Pre-Loading, File Size

With the release of Gears of War 4 coming up soon, Microsoft has now started to talk about important release topics such as a pre-loading and its file size on console.

Gears of War community director Adam Fletcher wrote on Twitter that Microsoft will talk specifics on pre-loading “soon.” Though we’ll have to wait, he did assure fans that they will have “plenty of time to pre-load,” suggesting this may start days before the game’s official release on October 11.

Part of this may have to do with the fact that Gears of War 4 will unlock four days early, on October 7, for people who buy the $100 Ultimate Edition.

As for the Gears of War 4 file size, Microsoft already said you’ll need a whopping 80 GB of free space on PC. But as for Xbox One, Fletcher said the console size may be smaller. “While large .. the PC size shouldn’t be the indicator for Xbox,” he explained.

You can see the full minimum, recommended, and ideal system specs for Gears of War 4’s PC version here; it also requires the Windows 10 Anniversary update. You can get a free copy of Gears of War 4 with the purchase of a newer Nvidia GPU.

  • Gears of War 4 Dev Celebrated "Going Gold" in Most Gears-y Way Possible

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that Gears of War 4 had “gone gold,” meaning initial development on the Xbox One and PC shooter was finished. Developer The Coalition celebrated the important milestone with a big party that involved cake and champagne–and also a Lancer replica.

As you can see in the images shared by Microsoft on Twitter, The Coalition boss Rod Fergusson cut into the celebratory cake with a replica of the franchise’s trademark chainsaw-equipped weapon. Another picture shows the team raising a toast, with Fergusson in the middle, holding what looks like the first copy of Gears of War 4.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer and even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella celebrated the going gold milestone. Gears of War 4 is the first brand-new entry in the shooter series made by Microsoft following its acquisition of the franchise from Epic Games in 2014 for an undisclosed sum.

Microsoft is going all-out for Gears of War 4, it seems, as it paid to air the game’s launch trailer on Monday Night Football this week, while the company will release a 2 TB special-edition Gears of War 4 console. There is even talk about a Gears of War movie.

Gears of War 4 launches on October 11 for Xbox One and PC, though you can pay extra to play early. The title is part of the Xbox Play Anywhere program, so you can buy it digitally on Xbox One and get a free copy of the PC edition or vice versa.

  • New Sea of Thieves Video Shows Off Stunning Sunsets

Rare has released its newest behind-the-scenes video for Sea of Thieves, this one focusing on the game’s lighting and how it’s used to create gorgeous-looking sunrises and sunsets.

The video is appropriately enough titled “Let There Be Light.” In it, art director Ryan Stevenson and principal environment artist Andrew Finch discuss the “tricks and techniques” behind the game’s lighting system. As you’ll see, Rare has gone to great lengths to ensure the lighting looks realistic–and for a pirate-themed game where you’re outdoors and on the sea a lot, this will surely be important.

Finch explains that there are lighting systems specific to morning, midday, afternoon, and night, as well as for the transitional times between those.

This video is part of the Sea of Thieves “Tavern Talk” series in which developers at Rare talk about specific game elements. Previous videos focused on the game’s clouds and water.

Sea of Thieves is an Xbox Play Anywhere game. That means if you buy it (digitally) on Xbox One, you will get the PC version for free and vice versa. The game comes out in 2017, though a release date has not been announced.

Microsoft has also stated that this game is the best game that Rare has ever made.
