  • EA Exec Teases "Much Bigger" Battlefront Sequel, Says No New Battlefield Soon

Speaking today at an investor briefing in Europe, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen discussed a number of interesting topics, two of which were the future of the Battlefield and Battlefront franchises.

Starting with Battlefield, Jorgensen confirmed that there won’t be another game in the series anytime soon. “We won’t have another Battlefield for a couple of years,” he said during a Nasdaq speaking event, suggesting the next one might not come until 2018 or later.

Though he didn’t give anything away about what this game will be, Jorgensen was asked how EA is thinking about further engaging players in the product. He was asked if the EA Sports Ultimate Team model could be applied to Battlefield–and it sounds like EA is cooking something up.

“We’re looking at all of our games and asking, ‘How might we provided additional opportunities for the player to engage?’ The players want to engage deeply in the game,” the executive said.

Jorgensen said you can poll EA executives and developers and they’ll tell you that driving engagement is the company’s principal focus for all of its games, ahead of financial considerations. At the same time, he pointed out that if people engage with a game more, “they may monetize more over time.”

Another key consideration is to keep the core gameplay intact. EA is “looking for ways to [deepen engagement] without disturbing the gameplay,” Jorgensen said, pointing out that FIFA’s Ultimate Team mode doesn’t take away from the bread and butter of the franchise.

Finding a way to add an Ultimate Team-style mode to Battlefield is overall a “great challenge” and an “exciting” one,” Jorgensen said.

“It’s not just about building another game. If we can build another stream of revenue that’s high-profit, it’s highly accretive to the overall company,” he explained.

Also during the event, Jorgensen discussed the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront sequel. Some criticized the game for not going deep enough, something that Jorgensen acknowledged in the past and again today.

“If there was criticism, they just wanted more,” he said. “So we’re taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had.”

The first Battlefront, which shipped 14 million copies to become one of the best-selling Star Wars games in history, focused on characters and locations from the original trilogly. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, Darth Vader, etc. The sequel, however, will leverage “the new movies,” Jorgensen said (repeating what he said earlier), which should give the game an opportunity to reach a wider audience.

Overall, Jorgensen described Battlefront 2 as a “much bigger, much more exciting Battlefront.”

The game, which has not yet been formally announced, is reportedly due out in fall 2017. It’s being made by EA-owned studios DICE and Motive Studios.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is not the only Star Wars project currently in the works at EA. Titanfall developer Respawn is making a third-person action adventure game, while Dead Space studio is making a Star Wars game, too, under the leadership of Uncharted director Amy Hennig.

  • Watch Dogs 2 Is Out Now on PC

Two weeks after Watch Dogs 2‘s console launch, the hack-’em-up is now out on PC.

You can grab it from Steam or Uplay or anywhere else–though bear in mind the game is not available for Mac.

It’s also available for free on PC–when you buy a select Nvidia graphics card.

Watch Dogs 2 was originally intended to launch on all platforms simultaneously, but the PC version suffered a two-week delay. Publisher Ubisoft explained that the extra time allowed the development team to “ensure that Watch Dogs 2 runs smoothly across a broad range of hardware.”

Ubisoft stated before release that it thinks Watch Dogs 2 can make up for the the lack of an Assassin’s Creed in 2016, but the game launched to disappointing initial sales, with its opening week down 80 percent compared to the original Watch Dogs in the UK. Ubisoft responded by saying, “We’re incredibly happy with critics’ and players’ very positive reception of Watch Dogs 2, which should bolster support for the long-term success of the game.”

If you’re yet to pick up Ubisoft’s latest open-worlder, check out its minimum system requirements here, or take a look at our Watch Dogs 2 review. You might also like our look at Watch Dogs 2 at its highest PC settings.

  • Xbox One Outperforms PS4 for Black Friday Online Sales – Report

Xbox One Outperforms PS4 for Black Friday Online Sales – Report

According to a new report, Microsoft’s Xbox One was more popular than Sony’s PlayStation 4 on Black Friday when it came to online sales in the United States. A report released by Adobe claims that the top five best-selling electronics products for Black Friday were iPads, Samsung 4K TVs, Macbook Air, LG TVs, and Xbox consoles.

    No Caption Provided

It wasn’t mentioned where the PS4 ranked, though it wasn’t in the Top 5. Importantly, Adobe’s report is for online sales only.

The Xbox One S and PS4 Slim, which came with at least one bundled game, were offered for only $250 on Black Friday, representing possibly the best official price on either console ever. If you missed out on the Xbox offer, Amazon is still selling the Battlefield 1 bundle for that price.

Adobe also listed off some hard-to-find products for Black Friday. Some of the products that were mostly likely to run out of stock included the NES Classic Edition and PlayStation VR.

Adobe reports that overall Black Friday online sales (which includes the evening of Thanksgiving Day), amounted to $5.27 billion, which is up 17.7 percent year-over-year. According to the report, $1.93 billion was spent on Thanksgiving Day, with the remaining $3.34 billion posted on Black Friday.

Looking at the entire season (November 1-24), the PS4 remains the best-selling console, with Xbox One coming in second, according to the report. In terms of games, Pokemon Sun and Moon were on top, followed by “Call of Duty,” which is presumably a reference to Infinite Warfare.

The report is based on aggregated and anonymous data from 22.6 billion visits to retail sites. Adobe claims to measure 80 percent of all online transactions from the leading 100 US retailers.

The Xbox One has been the best-selling console in the US since July. Numbers for November aren’t out yet, but if Adobe’s estimates are accurate, it sounds like the PS4 will be No. 1 in November. The NPD Group is expected to officially announce the figures in the beginning of December.

  • Watch Final Fantasy 15's Impressive Live-Action Launch Trailer

Square Enix’s long-awaited Final Fantasy XV is out today, and to mark the release, the publisher put out an impressive-looking live-action trailer. Titled “Stand Together,” the video shows a group of boys about to be smashed to pieces by a hulking beast before Noctis and crew save the day. It’s a cool video, and the use of Florence Welch’s “Stand by Me” cover is a nice touch. Take a look:

In development for almost a decade, Final Fantasy XV is out now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. GameSpot’s review scored it an 8/10.

“While it’s safe to assume fans and outsiders will find some aspect of Final Fantasy XV disappointing–be it the shallow story or finnicky Astrals–it would be hard for anyone to deny that Final Fantasy XV is a fascinating game after giving it a chance,” reviewer Peter Brown said. “Where its characters fail to impress, Final Fantasy XV’s beautiful world and exciting challenges save the day.”

  • The Last Guardian Director's Note to Fans Acknowledges "Twists and Turns" of Game's Development

The Last Guardian Director's Note to Fans Acknowledges "Twists and Turns" of Game's Development

After years of development and multiple delays, The Last Guardian finally comes out next week on PlayStation 4. It’s now been revealed that the game comes with a note written by director Fumito Ueda, in which he acknowledges the “twists and turns” of the game’s development.

    No Caption Provided

Ueda goes on to call The Last Guardian an “experience unlike any other,” adding that he hopes people take their time playing the game to take in the scenery. Ueda also said he hopes fans finish the game, as it has an ending he said players won’t want to miss.

The full note (via Eurogamer) reads: “Dear Adventurers, It’s been a long time coming, but I take great pleasure (and relief!) in knowing that The Last Guardian is in your hands. When we first began work on The Last Guardian, I intended it to take from and build on our experience working in Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, making it something akin to a greatest hits album. Unfortunately, as you know, we ran into a few twists and turns along the way, and the title took longer than anyone expected.

Still, just as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are truly unique games, so too is The Last Guardian an experience unlike any other. As you play, take the time to stop and enjoy the scenery as you follow these unlikely companions on their journey. And you definitely won’t want to miss the ending! The development team and I hope you all have a wonderful time with The Last Guardian. Nothing would make us happier. Fumito Ueda.”

The Last Guardian was announced at E3 2009, when it was a PlayStation 3 game. After that, on multiple occasions, it had been thought that the project was abandoned. Ueda left Sony is 2011, though he continued to work on the game on a freelance basis. At E3 2015, Sony announced that the game shifted to PS4, going on to schedule it for an October release. That didn’t happen, as the project was pushed back to its current December 6 release date.

  • New Logan Image Shows Wolverine Looking Very Intense

New Logan Image Shows Wolverine Looking Very Intense

The promotion for the final Wolverine movie Logan has emphasised that it won’t just be another superhero movie. The movie’s official Instagram account has been releasing a series of moody black-and-white imagery from the film, and the latest pair are no different. Check the first out below and the second at the end of this story:

    No Caption Provided

Logan stars Hugh Jackman, who will be making his final appearance as Wolverine, alongside his X-Men co-star Patrick Stewart. They’ll be joined by Stephen Merchant (Portal 2), Doris Morgado (2 Guns), Elizabeth Rodriguez (The Drop), Boyd Holbrook (Narcos), and Richard E. Grant (Dracula). It’s directed by James Mangold, who previously helmed 2013’s The Wolverine.

The movie is rated R, and a brutal scene from its international trailer shows it’s sitting comfortably within that rating. You can watch the full trailer here. Earlier this month, a stylish new iternational poster from the movie was released.

As for the film’s villain, we know it’s Mister Sinister, but it is currently unclear who is playing the character.

The notes contained in a page of script that Mangold tweeted last month suggest something more hard-hitting than the previous Wolverine movies. “If you’re on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying, CG f**kathon, this ain’t your movie,” they state. “In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when s**t falls on them.”

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.

  • HDR Support Coming to Recore in 2017

Another Microsoft-published Xbox One game will be patched to support high-dynamic range, the company has confirmed. Xbox Studios GM Shannon Loftis dropped the news on Twitter last night. She also confirmed that the patch that adds HDR support for Xbox One S consoles will come out in 2017.

BTW – if you didn’t already guess: @ReCoreGame is getting the HDR treatment, too! It will look awesome on your new Christmas TV. #XboxOneS

    — Shannon Loftis (@shannonloftis) November 28, 2016

Xbox technical director Mike Ybarra backed this up with a tweet of his own, writing, “Recore with HDR? Yes, it’s coming.”

Recore won’t be the first Microsoft-published game with HDR support, as Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4 already have it. You need an Xbox One S and a 4K-enabled TV to see the benefits of HDR, which include things like more vibrant and luminous colors.

Designed by Mega Man‘s Keiji Inafune, Recore launched in September at a budget price of $40. The game, which was the first in Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program, saw middle-of-the-road reviews. It is currently discounted to $20 at places like Amazon and other stores.

For more on Recore, check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying.
