  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered Update Introduces Microtransactions

The latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered update has introduced microtransactions, adding paid options not included in the original release.

Supply drops–random loot drops first introduced in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare–return, and are purchasable with Call of Duty Points or Depot Credits, which can be bought using real money or earned in-game. Supply drops only contain cosmetic items, like new weapon camos, different reticles, and new character skins. The same items can all be earned by completing in-game challenges, for those who don’t want to fork out more cash.

You can also craft the new items using Parts, Modern Warfare Remastered’s version of Salvage from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Lastly, a bunch of new melee weapons can be purchased, like a shovel or hammer. The existence of these melee weapons, as well as the potential for microtransactions, had previously been leaked.

This same update also introduced female fighters and six more maps–read more about them here.

  • Hitman's Christmas Mission Has a Brilliant Home Alone Reference

On December 13 Hitman developer IO Interactive released its holiday update, which introduced a new mission called Holiday Hoarders. It tasks Agent 47 with putting an end to the criminal activity of a couple of notorious thieves running around Paris.

It turns out, the thieves in question are none other than Harry and Marv, the bumbling criminal duo from the Home Alone movies. According to Agent 47’s briefing the Wet/Sticky Bandits fled America after “a series of botched break-ins.” It now falls on Agent 47 to finish what Kevin McCallister started.

THERE IS A XMAS HITMAN LEVEL AND THE TARGETS ARE THE 2 IDIOTS FROM HOME ALONE pic.twitter.com/X7xXYwv95W

    — Broken CountZio (@countzio) December 13, 2016

The in-game versions of Harry and Marv have different surnames, but look very similar and have the same wrap sheet. The characters are clearly an homage to the Home Alone series, though not an official tie-in.

The Holiday Hoarders mission is free, but developer IO Interactive is encouraging donations to the World Cancer Research Fund.

“Cancer is something that affects everyone in one way or another at some point in their lives. We’re giving away some fun, free holiday content to all Hitman players and we ask in return that if you want to donate to a great cause, please give whatever you can,” studio head Hannes Seifert said.

  • Star Wars Rogue One Set For Second Biggest December Release Ever

Star Wars Rogue One Set For Second Biggest December Release Ever

There has never been much doubt that the new Star Wars spinoff Rogue One would be a box office success–the question is how big? The latest projections estimate that the film could set the second highest December opening in history when it arrives this weekend.

    No Caption Provided

As reported by Variety, Rogue One is on course to make between $120 million and $150 million at the US box office in its opening three days. Combined with a projected $150 million from the international release, this would give it the second biggest December opening of all time, behind last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened with $248 million worldwide.

Other studios are steering clear of releasing against Rogue One–the only other films that are opening this weekend are low-key dramas that could play well with those with less interest in the Star Wars series, such as the Will Smith-starring Collateral Beauty and the Denzel Washington-directed Fences.

Earlier this week, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy admitted that making this first Star Wars spinoff was risky, given it is not a continuation of the classic saga movies. “If we’re going to keep Star Wars alive, and we’re going to make it interesting for the fans and for ourselves as well, we have to keep pushing ourselves,” she said. “And we have to keep pushing those stories and finding new adventures and finding new technology and great new characters.”

Early reviews for Rogue One have been very positive–check out our round-up here. The movie hits theaters on December 16.

  • Pokemon Sun and Moon Animations Ported to Unreal Engine 4

Talented modder and YouTuber CryZENx has ported animations for Incineroar and Salazzle from Pokemon Sun and Moon to Unreal Engine 4. This is a simple animation test, so while it looks like the two Pokemon are squaring off for a fight, you won’t see an actual battle in the video below.

This isn’t CryZENx’s first attempt at taking fan-favourite properties and making them look shiny modern. The modder has a YouTube channel full of videos, including such gems as a recreation of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Gerudo Valley, and an uncomfortably fast Sonic the Hedgehog.

According to a post on CryZENx’s Facebook page, the Nintendo Switch’s ability to run Unreal Engine 4 means it’s possible that a future Pokemon game could look as pretty or better that what you can see in the video above. But, given that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a modernized, but heavily stylized look, it seems unlikely Nintendo would opt to go for something quite as modern as all that.

It would be interesting to see these models—apparently lifted and modified from actual game files—paired with the unused walking animations found in Nintendo’s record-breaking Pokemon Sun and Moon last week.

Now, for an extra dose of nostalgia and longing, check out Hyrule Field from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine 4:

It ruled in favour of Hello Games and noted “no further action [is] required.” You can read more extensive coverage of the report here.

On November 27 Hello Games launched a major new update for No Man’s Sky called the “Foundation Update.” It introduces the first parts of the game’s base-building and also serves as a “foundation for things to come.” According to the developer, the Foundation Update is the first of “many” free patches for No Man’s Sky.

  • Assassin's Creed's "Leap of Faith" Is Front and Center in New Movie Clip

Fox has released another clip from the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film. This latest one shows Michael Fassbender’s 15th century Spain character, Aguilar, in a thrilling action sequence that culminates with one of the franchise’s trademark “Leap of Faith” jumps. Check out the clip below.

During a Q&A on Monday, Fassbender said he and co-star Ariane Labed performed about 95 percent of their own stunts. He did not perform this Leap of Faith, however, as that was handled by stuntman Damien Walters. He actually jumped from 120 feet in the air into a crashpad with no ropes or harnesses.

Fassbender has spoken about the importance of physical stunts and on-location shooting; Assassin’s Creed won’t lean on CGI as much as other films, he says.

Previously released Assassin’s Creed clips showed things like the film’s new-look Animus and an incredible carriage chase.

In other news, Assassin’s Creed brand director Azaizia Aymar recently made the bold prediction that Assassin’s Creed will buck the trend of video game movies being mediocre or worse.

“I really think it’s going to be a milestone movie,” he said. “It’s going to be the very first time that a video game studio creative works with movie creatives altogether to share a vision and give them the tool to express themselves; rather than have an adaptation. There’s going to be a ‘before and after Assassin’s Creed movie’ for sure.”

Assassin’s Creed opens on December 21. It also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Brendan Gleeson. The movie was directed by Macbeth‘s Justin Kurzel.
