  • Pokemon Sun And Moon Players Can Get A Free Rare Pokemon

Nintendo is giving away another free Pokemon for Sun and Moon. This time, players in the US, Europe, and Australia can snag a rare shiny variant of the guardian Pokemon Tapu Koko.

What makes this particular Pokemon special is its appearance; unlike most other pocket monsters, Tapu Koko cannot be found in the wild in its shiny form, making this the only legitimate way players can obtain one. The Pokemon is level 60 and comes equipped with an Electric Seed, which synergizes nicely with its ability Electric Surge. Electric Seed boosts Tapu Koko’s defense in Electric Terrain, which the Pokemon creates when it enters the battlefield. Tapu Koko also knows the following moves:

    • Nature’s Madness
    • Discharge
    • Agility
    • Electro Ball

To obtain the Pokemon, select the Mystery Gift option from the game’s menu screen and choose to receive your gift via the Internet. You can then pick up your Tapu Koko from the deliveryman inside any of the game’s Pokemon Centers.

Nintendo has been offering Pokemon Sun and Moon players a steady stream of free items and monsters since the games’ release. Recently, players could snag five rare Mega Stones by inputting a special code. There are more adventures still in store for the Alola region; this November, Nintendo will be releasing Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, another pair of titles set in the same world but with an “alternate story.” Players can pre-order a special Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon steelbook dual pack right now from Amazon. Nintendo is also releasing the classic Gold and Silver versions on the 3DS Eshop this September, and any Pokemon captured in those titles can be transferred to Sun and Moon via Pokemon Bank.

  • Doctor Who's Thirteenth Doctor Will Be Revealed Sunday, Watch The Teaser

Doctor Who's Thirteenth Doctor Will Be Revealed Sunday, Watch The Teaser

After three years, Peter Capaldi will end his run as the title character on the television series Doctor Who this holiday during the annual Christmas special. But, of course, the end of one Doctor just means that another is going to take his place. That new actor’s identity has been a well-guarded secret, but we’ve learned when the reveal will happen: July 16.

    No Caption Provided

The official Doctor Who Twitter account stated in a video teaser today that the 14th Doctor’s identity will be shown following the Wimbeldon Men’s Final. Whether that’s a clue in some way to the next Time Lord’s identity remains to be seen.

    Exclusive News: It’s Almost Time. #DoctorWho pic.twitter.com/rB4t1RH8Dx

    — Doctor Who Official (@bbcdoctorwho) July 14, 2017

Capaldi announced his departure from the show back in January, but the season which ended on July 2 also marked the final for long-time showrunner Steven Moffat. The BBC announced in 2016 that the new showrunner will be Broadchurch writer and producer Chris Chibnall.

Speculation around who could play the next iteration of the Doctor has spanned actors ranging from Ben Winshaw (from the recent Bond films) to Harry Potter star Rupert Grint. But as we saw with the reincarnation of the Master a few seasons back, the Doctor’s identity is gender fluid.

Who do you think will take on the new Time Lord’s mantle? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Just Cause 3 Multiplayer Mod Launching Very Soon

Just Cause 3 is finally getting a multiplayer mode next week. The online portion arrives on PC as part of a mod by a fan group called Nanos GBR, and it launches on July 20.

According to the mod’s Steam listing, it will bring “hilarious brawls, stunts, and races” and allow you to play with “hundreds of other players.” Modes will include races, deathmatch, skydiving, freeroam, and more.

The mod had previously been available as part of an open beta, but July 20 sees it launch in full for the first time.

A separate Just Cause 3 multiplayer mod appeared to be dead in 2016 when its lead designer, Cameron Foote, abandoned the project after he was offered a job at Avalanche Studios, the base game’s developer.

“Several months ago, I was approached with an offer I couldn’t refuse: to join Avalanche Studios Sweden as a developer so that I could work on projects present and future,” he explained at the time. “Unfortunately, due to time constraints, neither I or the rest of the team can actively pursue development on JC3-MP; our lives are just too busy to allow for it right now.”

Foote was part of a team separate from Nanos called JC-MP, which developed the successful multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2. After the success of that add-on, many hoped there would be official online support for the third entry in the series. Just Cause 3 launched without any multiplayer, however, leaving community groups to take up the project.

Right now, Nanos’s mod is only playable on PC, though Avalanche Studios has said it is thinking about bringing mods to consoles.

We enjoyed Just Cause 3 here at GameSpot–critic Mike Mahardy awarded it an 8 in our verdict. For more, check out our full Just Cause 3 review.

  • Official Pokemon Go Ring Accessory Launching Soon In Japan

Official Pokemon Go Ring Accessory Launching Soon In Japan

Pokemon Go will soon have an official ring accessory. The handheld trinket is designed as a different way of holding the Pokemon Go Plus device, and it launches tomorrow, July 15, in Japan.

The ring lets you control Pokemon Go from the palm of your hand rather than just your wrist. In addition, a number of new decals–in the style of Great, Ultra, and Master Balls–have been revealed. Take a look at the accessory and the new skins below (via Serebii).

The ring–which doesn’t include the Pokemon Go Plus device itself–costs ¥400 (around $3.50), though it’s unclear if it will ever make its way to the west. The original $35 Pokemon Go Plus did launch in the US, Europe, and Australia, following a delay, though it sold out in its pre-sale phase and was subsequently difficult to obtain for many months after launch.

The Plus is a wearable device that alerts you of nearby PokeStops and allows you to catch Pokemon without reaching for your phone. However, its functionality is limited compared to the fully-fledged game: you can’t catch any Pokemon you haven’t previously obtained, for example.

In other news about the hit game, a number of Pokemon Go live events begin this month. There are a bunch of sites hosting Pokemon parties, from Chicago in the US to Chester in the UK to Paris in France. Take a look at the full list here.

Developer Niantic is already hosting a special in-game event to commemorate Pokemon Go’s first anniversary. For a limited time, players can have a chance to capture a special Pikachu wearing Ash’s iconic hat from the animated series. The event is going on now and runs until July 24. The developer has also teased that this may be the summer that Legendary Pokemon finally come to the game, though no specific details have been announced.

  • PS4's Gran Turismo Sport Release Date Revealed In New Trailer

PS4's Gran Turismo Sport Release Date Revealed In New Trailer

Sony has revealed the release date for Gran Turismo Sport, the first game in the series to come to PS4. The racer will launch in the US on October 17 before a European/Australian release on October 18. The publisher announced the news in a new European trailer, which you can watch above.

Sony said recently that the racing title would launch this fall, but this is the first time we’ve had a concrete date since its delay from 2016. Today’s announcement follows the completion of the long-running closed beta, which finished earlier this week. That’s not the last you’ll see of it before launch, however; Sony says a full reveal of the cars and tracks included is coming soon. In the meantime, check out the game’s box art–including images of the Day One, Steelbook, and Collector’s Editions–below.

We played the latest iteration of Gran Turismo Sport at E3 2017, and you can check out our early impressions here. Elsewhere at the event, Sony confirmed GT Sport will run at 4K and 60 FPS on PS4 Pro, which will also get HDR support.

The racer is exclusive to PS4 and is being developed to support PlayStation VR, though it will not feature dynamic time or weather. The decision to drop these two features, which were key to the series, was made “in order to raise the frame rate and the quality of the image.” Players will still be able to set time and weather before the start of a race.

Gran Turismo Sport is the first in the popular series since 2013’s Gran Turismo 6, which was a PlayStation 3 exclusive. In our review, critic Joseph Barron said the racer possessed a “lack of vision” but that it “remains a fantastic simulation.” For more, check out our full Gran Turismo 6 review.

  • Serious On-Set Injury Halts Walking Dead Season 8 Production

AMC has suspended production of its hit show The Walking Dead after stuntman John Bernecker was injured seriously during a rehearsal this week. According to Deadline, Bernecker suffered a “serious head injury” after he fell 30 feet onto a concrete floor.

He was transported to a local medical center in Atlanta and is in the intensive care unit. A source told Deadline that the stuntman is “brain dead and on life-support while his family makes arrangements.”

We are all praying for him, his family, friends and colleagues. https://t.co/03Kj5JLwun

    — Gale Anne Hurd (@GunnerGale) July 13, 2017

From Deadline’s report: “Sources say Bernecker and an actor were rehearsing a fight scene that was supposed to end with a routine fall from a balcony, but he lost his footing and fell 30 feet to a concrete floor.”

Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd posted a message of support for Bernecker on Twitter, saying, “We are all praying for him, his family, friends, and colleagues.”

Bernecker also did stuntwork for The Fate of the Furious, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and Looper, among other movies.

  • Nintendo DS-Style Download Play Is Possible On One Switch Game, Here's How

One of the Nintendo DS and 3DS‘s most popular features was Download Play, the ability to play locally with your friends using just one copy of a select number of games. Titles such as New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, and Luigi’s Mansion all allowed you to play multiplayer by transferring data directly from one console to another. Right now, Download Play is not supported on Nintendo Switch, but Bandai Namco has got around that in a rather unique way.

In the upcoming game compilation Namco Museum, up to four players (two on each Switch console) can play Pac-Man Vs. using just one copy of the game. According to Bandai Namco, the Switch owner who doesn’t own Namco Museum simply downloads a free Eshop app called Pac-Man Vs. (Free Multiplayer-only Version). The publisher confirmed to GameSpot that this allows the two Switch consoles to play together locally, without internet connection.

While this isn’t quite as elegant as the system-level implementation seen on the DS and 3DS, it shows at least that a solution is possible. Hopefully, this will lead to more Switch games incorporating features that allow local play on multiple consoles using just one copy of a game. Of course, the Switch’s two Joy-Cons allow another form of local multiplayer on the same Switch console in some games, and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe uses this to great effect. However, fewer buttons being available on one Joy-Con than two means some other titles might be limited in functionality, as is seen in FIFA 18 on Switch.

Namco Museum launches on July 28 in Europe and North America, priced at $30. It also includes a number of other games, complete with online leaderboards (which Pac-Man Vs. does not support). You can see a trailer above and a full list of announced games below:

  • New Nintendo 3DS Production Ended In Japan

Nintendo has announced that production of the New 3DS has ended in Japan. An update on the official Nintendo Japan website indicates that white, black, and limited edition models of the base New 3DS are no longer being manufactured. The 2DS, New 2DS XL, and New 3DS XL pages do not display the same message.

It is unclear what this means for the western 3DS lineup. The Nintendo US Store currently has no standard New 3DS systems listed, while the UK Store only shows remaining stock of limited edition bundles. GameSpot has contacted Nintendo for comment.

The news comes on the same day Nintendo launched another addition to the 3DS family of systems in Japan. The New 2DS XL came out today, July 13, over there and is already available in Australia and New Zealand. It’s coming to the US and Europe on July 28, priced at US $150 / £130 / AU $200.

It’s possible that Nintendo is beginning to phase out the standard New 3DS model in favor of a three-option system incorporating the 2DS, New 2DS XL, and New 3DS XL. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently explained the New 2DS XL is designed to exist “between” the New 3DS XL and the standard 2DS.

“The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer,” he said. “The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokemon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it’s a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, ‘Boy, I wish there was something in between.’”

The platform holder already ended production of the standard, non-New 3DS XL in Japan in 2014.

Of course, Nintendo also launched the Switch in March this year. Over 900,000 units were sold in its first month in the US, contributing to around 2.74 million units shipped worldwide in the same month. Supply shortages continue to be an issue for the Switch, and it seems likely that sales would be even higher were it not for that. Retailer GameStop has suggested that could be a problem for the entire year, and Nintendo of Japan recently apologized for the situation.

  • Overwatch's New PTR Update Has A Big Zarya Change

Blizzard has released a new update for Overwatch on the PC-only Public Test Realm, introducing a variety of tweaks to McCree, Reaper, Reinhardt, Zarya, and Doomfist, the newest character to join the game.

Arguably the most significant change is for Zarya’s ultimate ability, the Graviton Surge. When launched it now disables “all movement abilities” of the enemy characters caught within it, much like Junkrat’s trap. This means that characters like Tracer will no longer be able to teleport out of the gravitational pull, which in turn makes Graviton Surge significantly more effective.

McCree, meanwhile, will now slow targets hit with his Flashbang, making it harder for them to escape around a corner or behind cover and leaving them open to his gunfire for a little longer. Take a look at the full list of new PTR changes below.

It’s important to note that these changes are currently in testing on the PTR and may not necessarily be transferred over to the proper game. Since they’re experimental, the changes could be tweaked or even removed completely.

    Doomfist

    • Rocket Punch: Total distance traveled reduced by about 20% (This change has been on the PTR for a little while now)
    • Seismic Slam: Added a new UI indicator to show how much damage it will deal, and how much it dealt. Previously this was only indicated by the default crosshair filling in, but this is only visible when using the default crosshair. The new indicator should always be visible, regardless of any crosshair changes. Also, targeting this ability while in the air is now restricted to locations lower than your current height

    McCree

    • Flashbang: Now slows targets significantly when they are stunned. This makes them less likely to slide away around a corner or something similar once they are stunned

    Reaper

    • Shadow Step: VO and SFX distance dramatically reduced

    Reinhardt

    • Hammer: Swing speed increased by ~10%. On top of the swing speed increase, we’ve gone through and tweaked many timings and other things about the Hammer to make it more responsive. Overall it should feel a lot better to swing and make contact with enemies.
    • Charge: Impacting another charging hero (Doomfist or Reinhardt) no longer deals damage to both characters, but still causes a knockdown on both

    Zarya

    • Graviton Surge: Now disables all movement abilities of affect targets. This is similar to how Junkrat’s trap affects abilities

On July 12 Blizzard made progression for Doomfist available on the PTR, allowing players to unlock new skin and poses. You can see all the Doomfist skins here. The owners of the first seven Overwatch League teams were also recently revealed, and included among them are some very big games in traditional sports, gaming, and other industries.
