  • PES 2018 Demo Available Now On PS4 And Xbox One

PES 2018‘s release date isn’t far away, but if you’re eager to play the game ahead of its launch, its demo is available right now on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. It appears that unlike the full game, the demo–which weighs in at between 4 and 5 GB, depending on platform–is not available on PC.

Eleven teams are playable–including Barcelona, Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Brazil, Argentina, and Germany–across two stadiums: Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park and Barcelona’s Camp Nou. Curiously, however, you cannot change your team’s formation in the demo version.

The trial follows an open beta which was held in July. That only let you play online multiplayer matches however, while this demo version allows offline play for the first time.

In other PES 2018 news, publisher Konami announced recently that retired English football star David Beckham will be a playable Legend in myClub, the game’s FIFA Ultimate Team rival. He joins a list of playable Legends that also includes Diego Maradona, who previously threatened to sue Konami. The two parties later settled their dispute and Maradona will now act as a PES ambassador for the next three years.

PES 2018 launches for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC on September 12, around two weeks ahead of its main rival, FIFA 18, comes out worldwide. We played both titles at Gamescom last week, and you can see what we thought here.

  • Major UK Retailer Suffers Security Breach, 2 Million Customers “Potentially” Affected

European retailer CEX has suffered a security breach, with up to 2 million customers’ details at risk. The company says the data includes “some personal information such as first name, surname, addresses, email address, and phone number,” as well as “encrypted data from expired credit and debit cards up to 2009.”

CEX says it is liaising with “the relevant authorities, including the police,” regarding the hack, which was carried out by an “unauthorised third party.” It’s currently unclear precisely what data has been shared about specific customers, but the company is contacting up to 2 million people “as a precaution.” It also notes that no valid financial information has been lost as it stopped storing customers’ credit and debit card details in 2009.

The retailer claims no in-store customers should be affected, only online ones–and although passwords are not stored in plain text, customers are advised to create a new one as “a third party could still determine your original password and could attempt to use it across other, unrelated services.” Finally, the company states that if you do not receive an email containing recommended next steps, then your account is safe.

CEX specializes in second-hand video games, entertainment, and technology products, and is now one of the biggest entertainment retailers in the UK and Europe. It also owns a limited number of stores in the US. For more, check out CEX’s advice on the hack.

  • Destiny 2 Director Confirms There Will Be Rewards For Returning Players

As part of a new Destiny 2 Q&A video, game director Luke Smith spent 20 minutes answering lots and lots of questions about the game that he received on Twitter.

Among other things, he confirms in the Wired video that there will be rewards for returning players; that is, people who played Destiny 1 and come back for Destiny 2. He also jokes about Destiny 1’s infamous loot cave, talks about if the wizard actually came from the moon, and reveals the weapon from Destiny 1 that he’ll miss the most for Destiny 2. Smith also touches on how Bungie designs characters that can be cosplayed and reveals if Cayde-6 can eat ramen. Further still, Smith talks about if Ghaul would be more likely to listen to prog rock band Rush or songs from Disney’s Moana.

Additionally, he answers really, really specific gameplay questions, and if you’re a hardcore Destiny fan, this is the video for you.

What’s more, Smith talks about how the story in Destiny 2 will point at what’s coming next, either through the game’s expansions or potentially Destiny 3.

“The Vex don’t play specifically a role in the conflict between the Red Legion but while you’re playing through Destiny 2 and while you’re playing a bunch of the different content, we are pointing at places we are going to go next,” he said. “Part of the fun of making and playing games is seeing that intention and knowing that it’s all going somewhere.”

Destiny 2 launches on September 6 for PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC release to follow in October. An open beta for the PC edition is happening now–here’s how to get in.

  • New Robin Hood Movie's Release Date Delayed

The new Robin Hood origin movie from Hunger Games studio Lionsgate won’t be out on time. The company has announced that the origin film, which stars Kingsman‘s Taron Egerton as Robin Hood, is now opening on September 21, 2018, according to THR. Previously, it was scheduled to hit theaters on March 23. In moving to September 21, the Robin Hood movie now goes up against the the Jack Black-starring Goosebumps 2.

The Robin Hood origin movie also stars Jamie Foxx as Little John and Jamie Dornan as Will Scarlett. Eve Hewson plays Maid Marian.

Peaky Blinders director Otto Bathurst is behind the camera for the new Robin Hood movie, which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Being an origin story, the movie will apparently trace Robin Hood’s life from his time in the Crusades and continuing on to when he returns to Nottingham Forest to find it taken over by greed and corruption.

The story of Robin Hood has been told numerous times in film. Most recently, Russell Crowe played the character for 2010’s Ridley Scott-directed Robin Hood. Kevin Costner also played the character, for 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Cary Elwes played the character in Mel Brooks’ 1993 comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

In related news, it has been reported that a Maid Marian spinoff is on the way, with Suicide Squad actress Margot Robbie lined up for the lead role.

  • Watch Luigi Dab In The New Mario And Rabbids Trailer

Just a day before Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle launches for Nintendo Switch, Ubisoft has released a trailer for it that confirms a very important detail. Luigi can dab, I guess.

Just look for yourself. At around 25 seconds in the video below (via Twinfinite) Luigi does what Donkey Kong did before him in a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe trailer.

Dabbing is nothing new in video games. Nathan Drake does it. So do characters in Destiny.

Mario’s scaredy-cat little brother, Luigi is a long-range attacker in Kingdom Battle. He has a Precision gun that has the longest range of any other in the game, and when you upgrade it, the weapon becomes even more powerful. One of the downsides to Luigi in Kingdom Battle is that he has the smallest health pool of any character.

Kingdom Battle , a turn-based game, launches exclusively for Switch on August 29. GameSpot’s review scored the game a 9/10, while other outlets rated it highly as well.

“Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle exudes off-beat optimism that never dissolves,” reviewer Edmond Tran said. “It’s a consistent delight, no matter how challenging the road becomes, because Kingdom Battle’s unique turn-based tactics system is in every way a pleasure to engage with.

“Coupled with the annoyingly infectious allure of Rabbids, and the always delightful, colorful world of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is an implausibly engrossing formula that is positively challenging and endlessly charming.”

  • Knack 2's PS4 Demo Is Available In Europe And Australia

PlayStation 4 exclusive Knack 2 has a free demo that’s live now on the PlayStation Store–but only in Europe and Australia. No such trial is available on US PSN, and it’s unclear if one will arrive in the region before the game’s release date next week. The demo comes in at 2.6 GB, and you can download it for yourself here.

Knack 2 is, obviously, the follow-up to the PS4 family-friendly launch title Knack. After a leak, the sequel was eventually revealed at Sony’s own PSX event last year, and it’s coming to PS4 on September 5 (September 6 in Europe and Australia).

The original Knack wasn’t critically acclaimed, but designer Mark Cerny said in 2014 that he believes there was still a lot of room to work in the Knack world. When asked if there would ever be a sequel, he responded, “I would love to keep working with the [Knack] brand, definitely. There’s a lot unexplored there, I think anybody who played the game would tell you that.” Knack was still in the top 20 games sold on US PSN as recently as this year.

We didn’t hugely enjoy the original here at GameSpot. Critic Tom McShea said “there’s not one element of Knack … to excite you,” and he awarded it a 4/10. You can read more in our full Knack review.

  • Nintendo's Miiverse Is Shutting Down Soon For Wii U and 3DS In Japan

One of Nintendo’s ageing Wii U and 3DS online services, Miiverse, is going offline soon. Nintendo has announced that the service will be taken offline on November 8 in Japan at 3 PM in Japan. There is no word on if the shutdown also applies to other regions.

Nintendo announced the shutdown on its website today (via Daniel Feit on Twitter). A lot of games are affected, including Super Smash Bros., Mario Party 10, and Mario Kart 8. You can see a full list of affected titles here.

Additionally, Nintendo’s Wii U TV streaming functionality, Tvii, is also closing on November 8, along with Wii U Chat.

Nintendo made efforts to improve and expand the Miiverse’s functionality and accessibility since the Wii U debuted in 2012. Examples including adding support for mobile devices and browsers and a bigger overhaul in summer 2015.

With Nintendo’s next major online service set to premiere in 2018, it was always likely to be the case that Miiverse wouldn’t be supported forever. The Nintendo Switch online service will cost $4 per month or $30 per year. Currently, it is free.

In July, dataminers found references to a forthcoming Miiverse shutdown, so today’s announcement, though unfortunate for those enjoying it, is not a total surprise.

This story has been updated and corrected to say we don’t know yet if Miiverse is closing outside of Japan.

  • Rick And Morty's Savage Game Of Thrones Burn Was A Surprise To Show Creators

One of Adult Swim’s signatures are the bumpers that are scattered between shows and commercials–the black screens with text that feature jokes and remarks on a wide variety of subjects. Last night’s episode of Rick and Morty was punctuated by one that took a shot at Game of Thrones–and those behind the animated show have already clarified that they weren’t responsible.

As pictured below, the bumper doesn’t beat around the bush. “The Writing Game of Thrones [2011-2016],” it reads. It’s a harmless enough joke, if one that feels like it’s a bit out of nowhere. But it apparently doesn’t reflect the feelings of the team behind Rick and Morty, despite being displayed immediately after the show.

THIS FADED IN AT THE END OF RICK AND MORTY AND I AM LOSING MY GD MIND. BEYOND SAVAGE. #GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/DQ4SyvH3MD

    — Nik (@nhimak) August 28, 2017

“We had nothing to do with that game of thrones bumper after last night’s ep,” a tweet today from the official Rick and Morty account reads. “We hadn’t seen it, that was all @adultswim. We [heart] Thrones.”

The writing on Game of Thrones has faced some serious criticism this season especially, particularly in regards to how it handled time. But the Adult Swim joke arguably feels misguided after last night’s Season 7 finale, which made up for many of the show’s earlier issues.

  • Hellboy Whitewashing Concerns Results In Actor Dropping Out

Following concerns about whitewashing in this year’s Ghost in the Shell film adaptation, a similar situation recently arose with regard to the upcoming Hellboy reboot. Actor Ed Skrein has now announced his resignation from the film in light of concerns over his casting.

Skrein, the English actor best known for his role as Deadpool bad guy Ajax (as well as the original version of Daario on Game of Thrones) was recently revealed to be playing Hellboy‘s Major Ben Daimio. This caused some controversy, as the character is of mixed Asian heritage, which Skrein said he did not know. In light of this, he’s decided to step down from the role. Skrein shared the news in a message posted on Twitter, saying, “I must do what I feel is right.”

    pic.twitter.com/8WoSsHXDFO

    — Ed Skrein (@edskrein) August 28, 2017

“It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voices in the arts,” he wrote. “I feel it is important to honour and respect that.”

Among the other actors cast for Hellboy so far are Resident Evil‘s Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen and Deadwood star Ian McShane as Professor Broom. David Harbour will play the titular role, and he spoke recently about how the movie won’t focus significantly on Hellboy’s origins. A release date has not yet been set, but the film will be directed by Neil Marshall, who is best known for his work on Game of Thrones, Doomsday, and The Descent.

  • Nintendo Switch Production To “Ramp Up” For The Holidays

The Nintendo Switch has been a difficult console to find for some, with many retailers sold out of their stock and selling through new allocation almost right away. Just recently, GameStop said it sells through new shipments in a matter of days. Now, Nintendo has spoken up to say it will “ramp up” production for the hard-to-find hybrid console in preparation for the always-busy holiday shopping season.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure everyone who wants to buy a Nintendo Switch system can do so,” Nintendo said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “We will ramp up production for the holiday period, which has been factored into our forecast.”

Officially, Nintendo’s plan is to ship 10 million Switch consoles to retailers by the end of its latest fiscal year ending March 31, 2018. Sources in the console’s supply chain told WSJ that they should be thinking about preparing to produce 18 million units. “One executive in the supply chain said his company was ready to pick up the pace of production if asked,” WSJ reported.

As of June 30, Nintendo sold 4.7 million Switch units worldwide. Nintendo’s stock is up 50 percent since the console’s release in March, and with big games like Super Mario Odyssey and the holiday season coming up, Nintendo’s fortunes could improve.

The Switch is not everything it could be right now, as it’s still missing streaming services like Netflix and YouTube. You can check out GameSpot’s gallery here to see the 15 Things We Want To See From Nintendo Switch.
