“Something happened last night.” It was announced today that the eighth feature film by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, titled Everybody Knows, will be the opening night competition selection at the Cannes Film Festival this May. Following that announcement, this first trailer arrived for the film originally titled Todos lo saben in Spanish. Shot entirely in Spanish on the Iberian Peninsula, Everybody Knows is about a Spanish woman who returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open. Real-life lovers Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star, with a cast that includes Ricardo Darin, Carla Campra, Inma Cuesta, and Barbara Lennie. As expected from Farhadi, this looks very good. Will be catching it in Cannes. Enjoy. ›››
“You have the biggest heart of any man I know.” An international trailer has debuted for the indie comedy Ideal Home, the latest feature made by Hamlet 2 (remember that one?) director Andrew Fleming. Ideal Home is both written and directed by Fleming, and is about a wealthy, bickering gay couple whose life is turned inside out when a ten-year old boy shows up at their door claiming to be Erasmus’ grandson. This is a familiar story, but the twist is the two dads aspect. Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd star as Erasmus and Paul, and the cast also includes Jake McDorman, Jesse Luken, Jack Gore, and Alison Pill. This looks surprisingly warm-hearted, not as overtly comedic as I was expecting from that description. Give it a watch. ›››
“Blasphemy!” It’s finally, finally, finally, finally here!! Can you believe it?! The very first international trailer for Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has arrived out of nowhere, just a week before the Cannes Film Festival line-up announcement. Word is the film will play the festival, but until it’s official, this is our first look. Terry Gilliam has been trying to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote for decades, (in)famously starting production and then shutting down once before in 2000 with Johnny Depp. Now he’s finally finished it and it’s ready for release this year. Rejoice! The film is about an advertising executive who jumps back & forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. Starring Jonathan Pryce as Don Quixote, and Adam Driver as Toby, with a cast including Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgård, Rossy de Palma, Óscar Jaenada, Jordi Mollà, Jason Watkins, and Sergi López. This looks totally wild and crazy and fun, I’m so down for this. ›››
“We have an important task for you…” HBO has launched a full-length official trailer for Ramin Bahrani’s Fahrenheit 451, a new feature film adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s seminal work about a dystopian book-burning future America (which was made into a film in 1966). Oh my does this look good, and frighteningly accurate in relation to what’s currently happening in America. This version stars Michael B. Jordan as Guy Montag, a young fireman who struggles with his role as a law enforcer. The full cast includes Michael Shannon, Sofia Boutella, Keir Dullea, Chris Gleason, Martin Donovan, Lilly Singh, Grace Lynn Kung, Joe Pingue, and Sean Jones. I am so, so in for this and can’t wait to watch the entire film. Trust in Bahrani! He’s a great filmmaker, and I have a good feeling he’s made one of his strongest yet with this film. ›››
According to THR, the huge price tag is due to the fact that Amazon is required to make five seasons of the show. It is very unusual for a series of this scale and cost to have an upfront commitment of this size, but these were the terms of the deal with the Tolkien Estate and publishers HarperColllins. In addition, Amazon must have the first season in production within two years.
New Line Cinema, who produced Peter Jackson’s hugely successful Lord of the Rings movies, do do not own any of the TV rights to Tolkien’s work, so the show could technically stand apart from the films. However, New Line were included in the talks, and THR reveals that Jackson has already started “a dialogue” with Amazon, and that the studio “may use material from the films.” Another intriguing aspect of the deal is that it also includes the rights to make “a potential spinoff,” indicating that, if successful, we’ll be watching a lot of Tolkien on our screens for many years to come.
Jackson’s first Lord of the Rings trilogy collectively made more than $2.9 billion, with the final instalment, 2003’s The Return of the King, making more than $1 billion alone. It won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Jackson followed this with three Hobbit films, which also made $2.9 billion worldwide.
The critical and commercial success of 2016’s Star Wars: Rogue One proved that there is life beyond the main Saga movies. However, in advance of its release, there had been rumors that the Gareth Edwards-directed movie was in trouble and need of extensive reshoots. Now writer/director Tony Gilroy, who was brought on board to oversee the movie’s post-production process, has confirmed this.
Gilroy appeared on The Moment With Brian Koppelman podcast, and was asked about his experiences on Rogue One. The Gilroy explained that, unlike Edwards, he was not a Star Wars fan. “I’ve never been interested in Star Wars, ever,” he said, via The Hollywood Reporter. “So I had no reverence for it whatsoever. I was unafraid about that. And they were in such a swamp. They were in so much terrible, terrible trouble that all you could do was improve their position.”
Gilroy went on to suggest that his role in both rewriting the script and directing the reshoots was to help focus the story. “If you look at Rogue, all the difficulty with Rogue, all the confusion of it and all the mess… in the end when you get in there, it’s actually very, very simple to solve,” he said. “Because you sort of go, ‘This is a movie where, folks, just look. Everyone is going to die.’ So it’s a movie about sacrifice.”
Rumors about Rogue One‘s troubled production had been circulating as early as January 2016, eleven months before the film’s release. Initially it was reported Mission: Impossible director Chris McQuarrie had been hired to help “save” the screenplay. Then in May, the story broke that Edwards’ first cut had not tested well, and that weeks of expensive reshoots would be required.
In the recent interview, Gilroy confirmed that he was brought in at this stage. “I came in after the director’s cut,” he said. “I have a screenplay credit in the arbitration that was easily won.” Both Edwards and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy downplayed the reshoots at the time.
The second Star Wars spin-off, Solo: A Star Wars Story, has also had production problems, with Ron Howard replacing original directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord after they were fired. Solo hits theaters on May 27. Earlier this week, a new promo for Denny’s restaurant revealed some of the movie’s new aliens.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has very quietly added a new mode called War on PC. The new mode–which is essentially Team Deathmatch–adds respawns, a mechanic not seen in PUBG’s standard battle royale mode.
Players are condensed into a small, static area on Erangel, meaning lives don’t last long. The selection of weapons and gear depends on the settings picked by the game’s host, so you could spawn with any number of items. War mode is available now but only as a custom game, meaning only PUBG Partners can start and host matches–though anyone can join an already-created session.
The mode was not announced by developer PUBG Corp. or publisher Bluehole, with no mention of it anywhere on social media or on the game’s forums. It’s therefore unclear how long War will be available for. It could be a timed mode, similar to the game’s other new way of playing, Tequila Sunrise, which went live just recently and features close quarters, shotgun-based combat.
In other PUBG news, a new patch has just been released for the game, bringing with it bug fixes and the new Killer Spectate mode that allows you to watch the player who killed you during the rest of the match. If your killer dies too, you’ll be able to continue watching the player who killed them. Meanwhile, PUBG’s upcoming map, currently in the testing phase, now supports players who want to play as Squads on Codename: Savage. This is limited to PUBG’s experimental test server. You still need a beta key to access the map, and you can sign up to receive one the PUBG website.
Konami has announced a co-op event for Metal Gear Survive on PS4, Xbox One, and PC that draws inspiration from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The event, titled ‘The Encounter 1964,’ is set to launch on April 10 and will run for two weeks.
According to Konami, the event will feature “recognisable elements and fatigues from Snake Eater” as “items such as the iconic Crocodile Cap, camo fatigues worn by Naked Snake, and EVA’s jumpsuit can be added to the user’s avatar.” Additionally, “a new cassette detailing the Shagohod can also be found.” You can take a look at the new cosmetic items in the image below.
Metal Gear Survive takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. You play as a member of Snake’s army who gets sucked through a wormhole to find yourself in a harsh alternate reality filled with crazed zombie-like creatures. Here, health, hunger, and thirst become your immediate concerns as you venture out into the unknown in search of resources to stay alive.
In GameSpot’s Metal Gear Survive review it received a 5/10, saying that it is “oppressive, demanding, and obtuse, and needlessly so.” This is “a shame because there’s actually a good survival game in there, but the pressures it places on you make uncovering and enjoying that unappealing,” we said.
“Over time the ability to manage thirst and hunger becomes slightly more manageable, especially if you play the multiplayer, but the lead up to that is debilitating,” we continued. “There’s some satisfaction to be had if you persevere and savor the small victories, but you’ll quickly find yourself thinking about if your time would be better spent playing something else.”
The trailer is largely the same as last week’s red-band version, with some of the language and violence toned down. But there is a new joke, plus a recap of the events from the first movie–watch it below. The new poster meanwhile features Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) alongside Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz).
It has also been confirmed that Terry Crews is playing the character of Bedlam in the film. The former football star and Brooklyn 99 actor had never been formally announced as part of the Deadpool 2 cast, and it wasn’t initially exactly clear who he was playing. However a freezeframe in the trailer briefly shows a photo of Crews with the name “Bedlam” beneath it.
In a recent interview with Collider, Brolin spoke about the physical challenges of playing Cable. “I got beat to s*** on that movie,” he said. “I had stuntmen throwing me all over the place. I’ve got a shoulder issue, I’ve got a knee issue that I’ve got to deal with now, but we got through it. We got through it. I pushed hard and I suffered because of it.”
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ latest Event Mode has begun–and this one is going to get messy. Tequila Sunrise pits players against each other in close quarter combat with shotguns and melee weapons as the weapons of choice.
The mode pits four-man squads against each other on the Miramar map, and begins April 5 at 7 PM PT / 10 PM ET (3 AM BST on April 6). It will be active for 72 hours until the same time on April 8 (or April 9 in some regions). There are also some twists when it comes to safe zones that should keep things interesting. Here’s what PUBG Corp. has shared about it:
Loot Spawn Details

Melee Weapons (3x spawn rate)
No other weapons
